AMC Greenlights Pilots For 'Low Winter Sun' And 'Untitled Lagravenese & Goldwyn Project'

AMC announced today pilot orders for “Low Winter Sun” and the “Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project” marking the first time the network has greenlit two scripted pilots at the same time. “Low Winter Sun” is a co-production between Endemol Studios and AMC Studios. “Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project” will be produced by AMC Studios. The pilot orders continue to build on the network’s programming strategy of creating original scripted series that serve passionate audiences with quality and distinction.

"Low Winter Sun” is a contemporary story of murder, deception, Revenge and corruption in a world where the line between cops and criminals is blurred. The story begins with the murder of a cop by a fellow Detroit detective. Seemingly the perfect crime, in reality the murder activates forces that will forever alter that detective’s life and pull him into the heart of the Detroit underworld. The pilot is based on the 2006 two-part British mini-series written by Simon Donald and starring Mark Strong.

“Untitled LaGravenese & Goldwyn Project” is a legal thriller with major political, personal and ethical stakes. It centers on a District Attorney who uncovers new evidence that prompts the reinvestigation of a sensational murder case. The series is an exploration of personal morality and how people struggle with the shades of grey found in the absence of a simple, ordered moral universe.

They both sound very Killing-esque...(Not that I thought The Killing would be renewed, but I think this sort of seals it's fate)

Cult was given the quiet order to start staffing a few days ago. Same with Revolution (go TJ!) and the Kimmel multi cam on NBC.

Besides what we're hearing on Deadline, it's still early. Some people have talked about a disappointing comedy crop for ABC - bodes well for LMS, Apt 23, and maybe even Cougar Town (if just for syndi purposes). ABC likes How to Live With Your Parents, but it's supposedly "safe" and "stupid" from people I know who have seen it. Regardless, it's probably good to go.

The Asset and Rogue (fmr. Karyn Usher) have lost their momentum and both might be dropped.

Still early though, these things can change. They're still in screenings and will be until today or this weekend. We'll start hearing more concretely today (NBC could pick up Save Me and New Normal). Most will start doing stuff next week and we'll pretty much know everything by then.

It looks like Sarah Silverman's pilot won't make it? The buzz for it seems to have died down. :/

Hopefully Super Fun Night gets ordered.

They have cold feet after Whitney and Chelsea. She's too divisive.

Super Fun Night was delivered late, so any (lack of) buzz is premature. I hope it goes, too. I definitely could see it post-Big Bang. And yes, it has a laugh track. And yes, it was a live audience. It was super silly, but I'm a fan. I also like female nerds.

Holy shit had no clue HBO passed on such an interesting pilot and so star studded! I suppose it would have been a somewhat difficult sell but I would've figured HBO to be the one network who would go for something like that. What could have been I guess.

Thanks, Ivy. We delivered the final to NBC at midnight and now we wait for the good news. Everyone has been extremely positive on the pilot and things are looking good for us.

I'm so happy for you guys. Loved the script. I would be shocked if Awesometown got picked up at this point. Our pilot is strong (if you like Happy Endings or New Girl, and I do), but I'm not sure. I have a friend at ABC that says it's more in the mix than Deadline has stated, but I still don't see it.

Modern, Middle, Suburgatory, Happy Endings, Apt 23, and maybe LMS are all getting renewed.

How to Live With Your Parents etc and Malibu are both getting picked up. Then you have Mandy Moore, Prairie Dogs, and Red Van Man. Throw Awesometown in the mix, too. But I'm not sure, the buzz just doesn't seem to be there at this stage.

Thankfully, I'm working on another show now. But I really like Awesometown - it's one of the better sitcom pilots I've seen and is exactly my type of humor. I also haven't really loved what I've heard about the other ABC sitcoms and some reactions people have towards them.

You poor man. I wouldn't wish employment under Kurt Sutter on my worst enemy.
If you ever lose your job in the future, please, for the love of god, tell me some stories.

I doubt I'll ever see Sutter except for once in a while. We'll see. I'm intrigued. Should be fun.

Me and my friend just entered an assistant competition on scheduling for next year. I think we did okay. We'll see. I'll post it here in a bit. (We actually ended up putting Awesometown on the schedule because it filled a very specific need that we had to get filled).

On second thought, I would switch Happy Endings with Apartment 23, if just because Apartment 23 has some leftover episodes in the can after this season is over. HE can go at midseason with 22. And by The Office at midseason, I mean it's held until mid-fall because of the Olympics.

You'd blow up the entire NBC Thursday comedy block? Bold move. (IMO, the Leno at 10 experiment shows that NBC could indeed do worse than their usual.)

I did so because they start in August and they can launch the other comedies later in mid-October when one or two of those four inevitably fail and finish their 13 episode run.

They also need to be blown up. It has the brand of Must-See-TV that people remember, but not the shows that draw eyeballs.

‘New Normal’ and ‘Revolution’ Picked Up To Series At NBC

The Ryan Murphy-Ali Adler’s single-camera comedy pilot The New Normal and the JJ Abrams-Eric Kripke action drama Revolution also have received a series order from NBC. Co-written by Murphy and Adler and directed by Murphy, The New Normal is described as a heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple, Bryan (Andrew Rannells) and David (Justin Bartha), and a cash-strapped waitress and mother of one Goldie (Georgia King), who becomes a surrogate to help them have a child. Co-starring in the 20th Century Fox TV-produced project is Ellen Barkin as Goldie’s glamorous/bigoted grandmother. Like the other newly picked up NBC comedy series, Save Me and Go On, The New Normal also has been eyed for an early launch after the Olympics in August,

No surprise there. (congrats TJ Bennett!)

Kudos and congrats man. :)

Though if Revolution does turn into some LOST sized hit I'd keep a low profile if I were you since everyone will be PM'ing you wanting storyline tips. :p

Seriously though man glad you all got picked up.......

TNT Pilot ‘Tin Star’ Not Going Forward

’1600 Penn’, ‘Animal Practice’ Picked Up To Series At NBC

Animal Practice, from writers Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka, Universal TV and American Work, centers on a “House”-like veterinarian (Justin Kirk), who loves animals but usually hates their owners (especially the new woman who runs the clinic). Tyler Labine, Bobby Lee and Amy Huberman co-star. 1600 Penn, from 20th TV, is a family comedy set in the White House. Josh Gad co-created the show with Jon Lovett and is starring. Bill Pullman, Jenna Elfman and Martha MacIsaac co-star. The pilot was directed by Jason Winer, who also directed the pilots for two comedy series on the air, ABC’s Modern Family and Don’t Trust The B. Ditto for Animal Practice helmers Anthony and Joe Russo who also directed the pilots for NBC’s Community and ABC’s Happy Endings and serve as executive producers on both.

These are two of the most ignorant posts I've read in the past day, and I've seen Canuck's arguments in the Orson-Scott-Card-is-a-homophobe thread.

It's a fucking publicity photo that was hastily photoshopped together for upfronts. Are you fucking kidding me.

In other news, to see the temperamental state of pilot season: I've heard that Friday Night Dinner is NOT dead. I was also told last night that Isobel is dead. Goes to show you that no one really knows the full story unless you're in the room.

If it's just a "fucking publicity photo" then why get so bent out of shape if people don't like it or not? And the hastily photoshopped photo made for upfronts looks like shit? Surprise!

No one is saying that the show will be shit. Or even that the show sounds shitty. We're just giving our opinions on a single hastily photoshopped together fucking publicity photo made for upfronts.

Because you and Replicant made an opinion, in haste, based on one publicity photo. Nothing within the context of either posts suggested that your comment was based on the quality of the photo alone. Come on now, let's not play those games.

You didn't say "what a bad photoshop" or "jesus that photo looks bad". You said, in a comment that it's an NBC show, not a soapy CW show that you initially thought it was, that it "looked horrible."

No comments were "made in haste". Are you kidding? Looking at a photo and giving an opinion of it is what people do. Maybe if you're close to the development process of TV shows then you can look at things in a different light, but not everyone has that lense to see through.

Revolution could turn out to be the greatest television series ever made, but it wouldn't change the fact that the first publicity photo looked like shit.

You are making an opinion based off of one photo that will probably not be viewed on a large scale beyond people within the industry.

You didn't make comments solely directed at the quality of one photo, your comments were broader and nothing within that post history suggests otherwise. Saying it "looks bad" doesn't target the quality of the photoshop, nor does what either of you posted indicate that as the sole target of your judgment. Come on. Fuck, Replicant even said that the show was a "shit-looking thing", obviously making judgments about the show's quality based on one photo.

If you want to backpedal on that, fine. But making any judgments about any facet of the show based on one photo is, and I'll say it again, one of the most ignorant things I've read all day on GAF. So, so, dumb.

Any buzz on whether Shawn Ryan's Last Resort is any good?

I've heard mixed things about the script (including some thoughts from our dear own ivysaur12) but I heard that Sony went all out on the pilot (directed by Casino Royale's Martin Campbell no less) sparing no expense.

I even heard that the pilot (and presumably the show if picked up) put the submarine (bridge?) set on a huge gimble. I have (IIRC) never heard of any weekly TV show, let alone a broadcast one, sticking sets on gimbles.

It seems, that just like Sony's Pan Am last season, this is Sony's attempt at launching an 'event series' on broadcast. Hopefully it will work for them, they could really do with a win given the development season they've had.

In other news, to see the temperamental state of pilot season: I've heard that Friday Night Dinner is NOT dead. I was also told last night that Isobel is dead. Goes to show you that no one really knows the full story unless you're in the room.

This. Every pilot season goes through this smoke and mirrors campaign of disinformation and rumour. For example I heard early on that CBS' sitcom Partners was widely reviled and disliked, and now? Now it's being talked about as one of CBS's hot comedy prospects.

Again I heard that NBC were going to pass on Revolution at the script stage but it was, apparently, Favreau's decision to helm the pilot that pushed it over the edge. And, lo and behold, NBC just picked it up.

As William Goldman famously said of the entertainment industry, "Nobody knows anything."

Yes, our publicity photo for upfronts is terrible. It's a really bad photoshop job and one of the characters is wearing an outfit that never even appears in the show. This was probably slapped together in an hour by some intern at NBC. It's not indicative of the quality of the show.

I'm sorry if I implied otherwise, but I really was only judging that single picture. No backpedaling, no covering of tracks, no games. I'll be the first to admit that my communication skills are pretty bad and need a lot of work, both online and in real life, but I'm being 100% sincere when I say that my comment was solely directed at that shitty picture.

Equating dislike of a picture (or TV show, or anything equally trivial) to deep set homophobia is disturbing and hyperbolic to say the least.
