You'd miss out on some of the best games on the 360 like Bioshock, Mass Effect 2, Forza Motorsport 2, Perfect Dark Zero and a few other titles.

I'd be fine missing that list. PGR2, Otogi 1-2, Ninja Gaiden/Black, RSC1-2, Panzer Dragon Orta, Silent Hill 2, Fatal Frame 1-2, Genma Onimusah, Chaos Theory + SC1/2/4, DOA 1-3, Morrowind, Max Payne 1-2, Psychonauts, KOTOR 1-2, JSRF

This is insanely bad... let me add some context.

1) They have the least expensive system available
2) They have spent around 90B+
3) They are giving away the 1st party games on a sub
4) They are giving away big AAA titles day 1 on a sub
4) Phil Spencer has been praised by the media and fanbase

And they're down 11% vs the worst announcement of a system of all time, that was generally viewed as joke and had the worst version of pretty much every game released.

PGR3 and 4 (the best arcade racers ever IMO), the darkness, Kameo, Alan Wake, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Viva Piñata.

That console was so fucking good. Both the OG and the 360 had dozens of compelling games worthy of owning the console for.

How they've gone from that to where they are now I'll never know.

PGR2 is the GOAT. As much as it was nice to have universal custom soundtracks on the 360, I much prefer the implementation in PGR2 that made your custom soundtracks its' own radio station instead of how the 360 just overrode the in game music. KGB Corner is also my favorite course.

Still pretty much nothing really impressive omg next gen only can do on either system which is so sad. I know alot of people still on thier ps4/xbox one still.
this gen has been really weird. on one hand, we're 3 years in and we've gotten barely any new IPs, most games are still cross-gen, it's remake city (re4, dead space, tlou1, etc), the hardware hasn't brought any "WOW" moments, and a big number of AAA games have been fizzles/busts (halo infinite, bf2042, starfield).

on the other hand, despite this 2023 has been an absolute fucking banger of a year for releases. but pretty much all of them were released (or would be possible on) last gen consoles save for maybe BG3.

i hope next gen one of them goes team green to really push the tech side of things. the amd hardware in xsx/ps5 kinda blows. RT performance is trash, FSR sucks compared to DLSS. 30fps really needs to get taken out behind the shed for whatever next-gen is.

I thought he would get canned if the ABK deal fell through (I guess technically it still could), but that probably bought him some time. 18-24 months maybe.

But is there anything on the horizon that will change his fortunes for the better in the next 18-24 months? You have the PS5 Pro and a potential Sony reaction to the ABK deal. And then you have Wolverine and TLOU Season 2 on HBO. You probably have the Ghost of Tsushima movie coming out next year or in 2025.

Avowed and Hellblade are not going to change his fortunes.
And all of that is BEFORE even considering how a Switch 2 might take more wind out of Xbox’s sails (Xone sales totally fell through the floor after the Switch launched, whatever little it had been getting till then, it no longer was)

Series X has been a disappointment for me personally .

When you as a leadership team are doing the majority of the talking rather than letting your products do the work for you, it’s a problem. And it has been like this for too long.

The sad thing is they should be doing much better but instead they have gone all in a subscription service that’s clearly having the content dictated by it.

There is a lot of talent out there that could have that platform, particularly the console, competing much better in terms of growth, games and features. Instead we have a team that clearly laps up the attention and their words more often than not don’t match the final outcome.

I’m at a point where I don’t understand the lauding of this leadership , in my decades of being a gamer I’ve seen other executives get criticism for much less.

It can be so much better then this , that’s the frustration.

Wait, this is for the U.S. Market (only)? I thought it was for worldwide (at first), which was expected as the PS5 has been doing very well lately.

I was surprised that the XBOX Series sold less than the XBOX One did within the same period.

Just something to pay attention to.

The Xbox One X saw some moderate success in the United States last generation and now they're not going to have a mid-gen refresh this time around.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is going to boost sales
Nintendo is going to release their next-gen console and we're likely going to see significant price cuts to the Nintendo Switch.

The only thing coming from Xbox is an all-digital Xbox Series X console. They do, however, have to look forward to putting all of ABK games on Game Pass, but how much will that increase the subscription numbers?

Doing worse than the Xbox One three years into the generation is a disaster.

Price cut + heavy bundling might be the best way out. Not to mention more aggressive deals for content.

Gap will only widen this Christmas after the Spiderman bundle starts doing the work.

As someone who had the Xbox One and has an Xbox Series X, this is extremely surprising to me. The actual Xbox Series X console itself is so much better than the Xbox One. I would have thought it would be tied with the Xbox One at the worst.

And all this against Sony, who I would say hasn't exactly knocked it out of the park. A strong Sony would have annihilated MS.

Sony is murdering right now. The landscape looks different these days, though. The PS5 is a super-PS4 and that shouldn't be terribly exciting, but the people have spoken. If one could readily buy a PS5 in the first two years, this would have been even more of a landslide.

How so? As far as we know they delayed multiple 2023 games internally into 2024, which was the reason for 2023 being so barren of first party releases (honestly, they chose the best year possible to have a shitty year as to avoid getting cannibalized by [and cannibalizing] third parties releases).

2024 is gearing to be one of the better years for PS exclusives in a while, we just don't know that's coming yet.
I think we would have seen these games by now.

Not saying they’re not coming out, even next year, but I doubt they have much they’re confident about.

Wrong. They’re trying to get out. The next console Gen in their perfect world is a streaming stick. Or a smart tv app. It’s been leaked that if they don’t hit a certain game pass subscriber threshold (which they very likely probably won’t) by like 2027 or whatever, they’ll fold out of the console business all together
That's what people said about the Series consoles!
1. What year is it? This sounds exactly like the narrative being pushed 1 year into the XB1 gen. I'm talking verbatim.

2. Have you seen the shift/loss in market share, mindshare, and momentum in XB's strongest territory... While we wait for them to get their shit right?
Correct, it is the same narrative but that was before they dropped billions into buying major publishers. They kind of have to make things work, them becoming a multi plat publisher makes the most sense if things don't change for the Series consoles.

I still can't wrap my head around how bad they screwed the brand after the 360 gen and them sticking with the same team makes me think if Phil wasn't there they probably would have ended the Xbox brand because that would explain why him and the same team is still there.

Lines up with everything I predicted would happen going into this gen.

I predicted the Xbox Series consoles would do worse than the XB1 and that the gap would widen between Playstation and Xbox this gen and people called me a mad man.

Who is mad now?

The problem is that Microsoft hasn't really solved the primary issue behind the Xbox's failures and spending billions buying publishers isn't going to solve the problem for them. The problem is management and the Xbox brand itself which has taken a serious beating in the last 10 years due to the perceived lack of quality and irrelevance of the brand.

Playstation and Nintendo have both continued on a steady trajectory of strengthening their brands while MS keep watering down their console brand in favor of GamePass and easy subscriptions.

This will be the last traditional console generation for them. They can't continue like this going into the next generation.

"Time to buy another publisher"
I mean, the only way they can compete is do that.

Make games from the dozens of existing IPs? Preposterous! Just buy the ones coming out and yank them for the competition, then have the fans complain it's not fair Sony buys a limited exclusive deal while Xbox gobbles potentially hundreds of games.

This is why people have a problem with Xbox fanatics over all others: unreal arguments. Just a bunch of nonsense they repeat and hope it's true.

MS needs to understand that they need a high quality games if they want to sell systems. What did they release this year ? redfall ? starfield that is a huge disappointment and honestly boring beyond belief. and a Forza game that is supposed to be a next gen game only but cars looks worse in details than a game that was released 9 months before and has a PS4 port.

The year before ? they had ZERO games. Honestly I am even surprised they sold that much.

Quality over quantity. they don't produce system sellers. main while their competitors whatever Nintendo or Sony, release one hit after the other.

keep releasing mid range games, keep on getting a beating till you raise the white flag. one way or another, they will learn the hard way. so be it. full retarded move one after the other. .

I was never expecting it to do worse than X2 to be honest.

With that said I'm impressed with how much Sony has improved in the US.
It was obvious the moment GamePass was introduced.

"You don't need an Xbox to enjoy Xbox games"

PR doesn't get dumber if you have consoles to sell. Especially since you already started to make your console less interesting by releasing all games on PC day 1 and your main competitor has been killing it for years.

Then again, I've always believed Spencer was put in place to guide the transition from console "giant" to 3rd party publisher.

Maybe.

I think it's just them realizing Xbox won't be able to compete with Playstation any longer and going 3rd party would make more sense.

Can't beat them? Join them.

Or, they could truly be out of touch with the gaming industry.

Looking at some of the IPs they now own. Excluding PlayStation would mean a pretty big loss in revenue. I have no idea if they can make up that loss through gamepass or boosting system sales.

Yeah, I've adressed that in a couple of other threads.

I think that's why they bought the publishers. It'll be cheaper for them in the long run.

Looking at those data leaks with the expected price lists for getting games on GamePass, for GTA they expected having to pay 500M or something like that, iirc?
That's while having a rather small marketshare compared to Playstation, so imagine the amount of money it would require to get games like GTA or COD on GamePass while also making GamePass available to Playstation. (To compensate for loss in revenue on Playstation)

To me, it really seems like they are preparing for a big swing to go 3rd party in time.
Especially since Series is doing worse than XBO and GamePass hit a ceiling already, even with PC included. And mobile won't push GamePass drastically.

But this is just the way I see it, ofcourse.

I don't think Microsoft can be happy with these numbers at all.

I wonder when they'll get the message about having at least one or two high quality big budget blockbusters a year?

Sony beasting and good to see that they are taking share from Microsoft, as they should until MS delivers.

My only real concern is it looks like the overall console market has only grown by 2 percent this generation and we had the covid boom which everyone benefitted from. The market is staying pretty much flat, gen on gen. Which is a shame.

Course also be that Microsoft doesn't care about these numbers but are more focused on other metrics. Whether that's correct remains to be seen.

is worse.

It seems that the console industry can't sustain more than 2 platforms.

Difficult times for Xbox and only going to get worse going into next gen with more digital libraries built on rival platforms which the vast majority will continue on the next consoles.

Sony have the advantage of capturing mindshare, boosting sales with aggressive pricing like with the COD bundle and Slim and then the Pro next year for enthusiasts. Still yet to reveal sequels and games from their most popular 1st party studios.

Nintendo are a behemoth again and the Switch 2 is likely going to be a smash hit.

All Microsoft can do is try and undercut the competition with the Series S and Gamepass, but it doesn't seem to be working and the gap widens. The opposite is happening.

Called it a long time ago that XBS is tracking behind XBO.

Nothing official, but extremely safe to say that they are tracking behind Xbox One.

Every data points to that. Also, Microsoft's silence since they reportedly fell behind is also meaningful.
Series is not ahead of One in the rest of the world either.

Overall, worldwide, Series has been tracking behind Xbox One for several months now.

How they just keep going down, despite having the series S, Starfield and the One's sales being already abysmal, is beyond me.

Don't forget about Gamepass.

What's going to be interesting to see if Microsoft games sell more systems for the competition than Xboxs.
