Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

I don't think Best Buy has any. When I bought my 60" VT60 last month I went to BB.com first and added it to my cart but then it said it wasn't available for pick up or delivery.

I went through Panasonic direct which ended up being better because I was eligible for a discount through my work.

I would call BB to see if they actually have any in stock. I've heard from a couple people that they had a similar experience as mine. A lot of BB have already sold their display models. Do Not Buy A Display Model ! No matter how cheap. A lot of BB's run ESPN 10 hours a day everyday and most of their plasmas displays have burn in because of it.

It's listed on their site as clearance and ship to store in 7-10 days, would they just move a display model to be in store pickup? It wouldn't be new even when shipped?

Edit: also a local store here in Dallas has it for the same price new. Might just do that

1800

Is that the best tv for this price/range?

Primarily for video games and movies

I'm not that sensitive to input lag other than with rhythm games(bit trip runner is unplayable for me) but I've heard this might not be the best option?

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to sell something as new when it isn't. So if they pulled that, which I don't think they would, you could easily get your money back.

It's not only the best tv in it's price range, it's one of the best ever made. However, if you like bright LED style images, you probably won't like this TV. It's plenty bright for me and has a very realistic look to it. The THX Cinema mode is very good out of the box.

I don't notice any lag whatsoever, I'm playing BF4 right now on my PS4 and it handles it like a champ. I think the input lag craze is way overblown to be honest. Supposedly the Lag on the VT60 is around 45ms. The lag on the Vizio m I tried was around 35ms. I don't notice the difference. Unless you go with a Sony, everything else is going to be in the same boat more or less. Most sets are under 50ms which is not game affecting IMO.

For movies, especially BluRays, this is hands down the best tv. Gaming is a little different, although it is very good, I think I still prefer LCD's simply because you don't have to worry about IR.

So after quite a few years of service it seems that the main tv I use for my PS3 is on its way out. It's a pretty crap 768p Acoustic Solutions tv, so now seems like a good excuse to get a proper replacement. I do plan to get a PS4 at some point in the next few months as well, which will be another incentive to get an upgrade.

Anyway, I've just started looking at the replacement options and these are the general specs I'm looking at:

  • £500 or less
  • LED (I still don't trust Plasma burn in)
  • 40ish inches
I've mainly been searching on Amazon so far and these appear to be the main 2 contenders I'm looking at:

Sony KDL42W654 42-inch @ £489.00
Samsung UE40F6320 40-inch @ £479.00

At the moment I'm leaning towards the Sony because it seems to have lower input lag, and reviews make it sound like having better image quality in general. Does anybody know how they compare in other areas, such as motion blur?

I'm open to suggestions for other tvs in this price and size range. I'm not bothered about 3d either, it would be a nice feature to have, but not at the expense of any 2d performance and capabilities, Also if there's any better websites other than Amazon to make this kind of purchase then I'd be happy to hear it as well. Thanks in advance if anybody can help out.

EDIT: Vertical viewing angle could be a deciding factor as well, because I sit at around 30° to 40° below the wall mount.

when are some good mid range 4k TVs going to be out? because im not buying a new TV till then :o

I would rather have oled 1080p than led 4k. Or actually than oled 4k too. Once our game consoles is finally displaying native res, native res is suddenly many times higher.

So i just purchased a 65'' Panasonic ZT Plasma and i hate that i lose an HDMI port coming from a GT50 60''.

TV is great.

4K TV ended up going back as the gaming was a nightmare on it.

Help me make a decision gaf:

- Currently have a V10 plasma
- Starting looking for a new TV because the plasma's were running out so VT60 is my no1 choice.
- My time spend on the TV is 50% gaming, 90% of that is Battlefield, and 50% Blurays and Netflix
- My second choice is the Sony 900 or the upcoming 950. Mostly because of the low input lag, and no chance of burn in. ( I regularly play Battlfield for 8-10 hours straight ). Although that doesn't seem to be a problem on my current V10.

I am curious about a few things:

- Is the input lag difference between the V60 and Sony notable?
- How do they handle lower resolution sources ( streaming videos trough PS3, or playing PS2 games ), any difference in scaling?

Thanks alot!

I was successful at getting a refund at currys for that dodgy Samsung 5 Series 40inch with the blue streak motion blur and now...

I'm looking at that Sony one too so I'd love to know as well. I'm looking to it get at John Lewis.

I read somewhere that the W900 has a higher refresh rate than the 950. Something like 240Hz versus 120Hz (motionflow 960 versus motionflow 480).
Besides that the W900 has active 3D and the 950 passive 3D.

Passive on the w800 looks way better than active on the w900. So I wouldn't necessarily consider the switch to passive worse.

The Samsung Evo kits are fucking rip offs. $250 + to get snappier apps ? Just buy a Chromecast for $30.

Seriously, don't buy or even suggest the Evo kit. It's a scam and a joke.

Uh no. The ability to upgrade inputs and processors 3 years from now is a really, really good thing. It isn't just some firmware update.

Have you actually looked into it ? It does not upgrade inputs. It upgrades the processors that handle the smart hub, which makes apps run smoother, that's it ! It can also change your menu screen to the latest style Samsung decides to use. It will not enhance PQ at all.

$300 for the Evo kit, or $30 for the latest Chromecast ? You decide.

Honestly, you'd be better off buying a new smart BluRay player every 2 years than buying the Evo kits.

assuming Samsung even supports that shit 3 years later, which is doubtful considering their track record supporting their products.

I have a question; I hope one of you guys can me help me.

I'm considering a samsung F8000 or sony W905 tv. Both have pros and cons but the one that bothers me with the samsung model is the input lag. How important is this? I'm not a hardcore FPS guy but i do like to play online. I believe the sony is around 20 ms and the samsung around 50. Am I going to notice 30-40 ms input lag difference?

Thanks for any help!

Anybody have ideas as to where I can find a Panasonic ST60 or VT60? Yesterday I hit up several local tv places with no luck. One store sold out of them just a week ago. I'm looking for a 50" or 55". Danke!

Hi guys, Ive been reading this thread for a couple of days and I'm must say: I'm impressed with all the praise for plasma tvs. I'm currently in Chile, and decided to hunt down some Plasmas, although they are hard to find except for some second market ones. Also looking for specifically Panny models since I have read here so much good reviews of that brand. The thing is that I found this one:

http://articulo.mercadolibre.cl/MLC-416372323-plasma-panasonic-viera-50-pulgadas-full-hd-3d-_JM

says it has been used for almost a year, but the model seems to be bad written, I believe its a TC-P50ST30. The price of it converted is around $800

it's that a good tv? Im looking for something that can handle properly 60fps and no screen tearing or banding, which it happens with my current 50" samsung lcd, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

So the local shop that had the 60" VT60 is officially unable to source any and called me to tell me

So I'm basically going to be waiting till August to get a new tv unless I can find a great deal on a great 60+ inch for under 2k

Thanks for those of you that helped me with questions I had!

i just got my new s60 set up and i wanted to game with it this week. should i avoid gaming completely until the 100 hours are done?

is it important that i use those slides for 100 hours? i already watched 1 hour of netflix last night before reading about the break-in issue..

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung...oductCategoryId=abcat0101001&id=1218865211299

I think im gonna go pick this up

AVSForums has a lot of people who like it a ton, cnet and bestbuy reviews are good, its the right size and the right price for what i'm looking for unless someone has a better suggestion?

So I picked this up

I'm not a master of noticing this kind of shit but so far I'm very impressed with the tv once i got the settings worked out

The micro dimming shit is super annoying and I think 3 of the default picture modes use it

Set it to movie which doesn't and I configured it from there, pretty fucking happy with how it looks

I'm going from a 55 inch toshiba LCD to this and I notice better black levels. Using the backlight at 11 it's noticeable but it's way better than the LCD ever was

Turning it down to under 5 and even to 0 it looks black as fuck and the image isn't super dark either

I have no movies to test on it though, just animated comic movies and games

Speaking of, I don't really notice any input lag either. Still making all my shots in NBA and wonderful 101seems to not be missing a beat either

The slides are just an easy/safe way to age the phosphors evenly on your TV. As opposed to watching all 100hrs of movies and shows, which can take awhile, or running a DVD on loop which can end badly if it stops on the menu screen while unattended for hours. Other than that there is no need for them. It's recommended to avoid 4x3 and letterbox content, so that means no black bars on the top and bottom or the sides for the first 100 hours.

Just watch full screen content for the first 100 or so hours, you'll be fine. I would avoid games with HUDs ( which is about %99 of them ) for the first 100 to be safe.

thanks for the reply! maybe i'll do the slides. i hope i can figure out a way to have the slides play endlessly for a few days.

I'm also curious about this. I got a PN51F5300, which is a great starter tv for the price. But what about wii u games? Most have options to remove the HUD from the screen. Is that ok or still should I avoid it?

do i need to turn off the setting that slightly moves the picture around when i'm doing the slides? or does it not matter? i don't know how it works, so i don't know if it will wiggle the 1080 pictures enough that there will be a line of black pixels on any of the edges. it'd be easier to leave on, in case i forget to turn it back on.

So, I've decided to go with the 42LN5300. I don't want a 32", and the W6 42" are out of stock on amazon and nearly 800 bucks. What do you guys think of the LG42LN5300?

Yes, turn the pixel orbiter to auto which actually means off. If left on it will move the slides off the screen.

To the other guy. I don't see any reason a game without a HUD would be a problem. As long as there's no static image on the screen you should be golden.

thanks, just turned it off. i had it running for a half hour with it on, so i hope it doesn't make a big difference. i also turned the contrast to 50. i think that's all that needs to be done?

It won't make any difference, you just don't want to leave the orbiter on and run slides for long periods of time, like for 24+ hours. It's safe to bump up the contrast when running slides. I had mine at 80

Hm, ok, so I gots me a new TV to play around with a few days ago. Get it home and do the usual calibration stuff and one of the first things I do is turn off 120Hz. I hate the soap opera effect and it makes movies look worse. But right now, just for kicks, I enable it on my PS3's input and load up Bioshock Infinite... and it looks great? A typical 30fps game is now smooth as fuck, and while I think there might be some input lag (hard to tell, but if there is it's not much) going from 30fps to this looks so much better. Am I going crazy? I've been out of the TV loop for a while but I thought 120Hz interpolation was always shit to avoid?

I went with the Sony W900A (as it is called in NA).

Haven't had much time to play around with it, the few videos I ran looked great. Will need to check AVS for baseline settings, but things looked great even on the default settings.

Aren't these still in stock at Best Buy?
Unless you're not in the states.

Unless you're not in the states.

Best Buy is showing them as in stock, but not a single one locally has them, I can't do in store pickup (even though the page says delivers in 7-10 days) and I can't have it shipped to my house (Texas)

I checked 6 different zipcodes from different states and got the same "Nope" response from each one

If you have a store nearby where you can see the picture quality before you buy, I would do that. I think I was going to get the 47'' version of that model, or another LG 47'' and went into to Best Buy and was extremely disappointed by the picture quality. Tho can't complain since it eventually led me to moving up to a plasma :D

Errr, how can you tell? Display TVs are usually set on different modes. The ones I want only come in 32-42 anyways.

I've been looking into getting a Plasma TV but according to http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/ the lowest possible display lag is 27ms. which is about two frames. and the current popular Panasonic TC-PS60 has 35m. How noticeable is this? I currently play on a 9ms delay and don't notice anything. I'm very sensitive to input lag so this is very important to me. Does anyone have any personal experience with this?

Also how is motion blur? Are we talking CRT levels of motion blur?

-Thanks!

you think you're fast enough to notice 1/30 of a second?

you think you're fast enough to notice 1/30 of a second?

Apparently everybody can nowadays. It's truly amazing. If you do have these superhuman abilities then surely you can make the adjustment to compensate for the lag. The good news is it's a constant. It's not changing from 30ms to 100ms to 16ms, so adjusting should be simple. Just press that button 1/30th of a second faster, you'll be fine.

Can anyone help me find a cheap TV that would be under 30 inches? I would mostly use it to play wii u and xbox one games. So basically anything 1080p would be good. I'm not really that great at picking TVs so any help would be greatly appreciated.
