Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Glad you're enjoying your set and got a good one.

I assume you had a ec9300 before and not a 9500/9600 oled?

Yep. 9300. I just finished some Halo 5 Swat action, perfect. The 65" curve is stupid immersive from where I'm sitting, eyeballs about 8ft away, and it looks great too.

Does anyone own this Sony set? (XBR55X810C)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0148OZLOS/?tag=neogaf0e-20

i've been using Rtings to look for something to replace my 5-year old 50" Viera.

things important to me:
-PQ
-55" or bigger
-Not curved
-120Hz (or higher) refresh rate
-Low lag; good for gaming
-$1500 is about as much as I want to spend

this set seems to lack a lot of fancier features (3D, local dimming, HDR) that other sets have, but i'm not too concerned about those. i use my set for basically two things: gaming and streaming movies/TV. it's about 70/30 between those two things, so a solid TV with good PQ and low lag is the thing for me.

any input/feedback is very appreciated!

Input Lag: 35.7 ms, for me that's not low.

Nice! Glad you like the curve. I'm hoping to love it as well.

Obviously the blacks won't be as good, but are they ballpark?

How bad is the bloom? I couldn't notice any at Best Buy, but real world results will be different.

Just a side impression: the 65" and 4K are already making a big difference for us over the OLED. We watch "The Office" like it's going out of style and it looks great up scaled to 4K :)

How is game mode specifically? Would you say it looks as good as native 1080p gaming? Apparently to get that lag low, quite a few sacrifices have been made to the pic quality.

Watching shows, the blacks are pretty great. I haven't seen blooming yet in a show. The Halo 5 loading pinwheel produced some. There's a little flash lighting on mine around the edges. It's not really bright, and only one spot was brighter/noticeable. I managed to massage that spot out, which is amazing. It's weird because you only see them sometimes. There was a completely black scene in a TV show and you couldn't see them at all, then on the watchESPN loading screen they are there. Since mine are right against the edges, the "Cinema Black" setting completely eliminates them during movies, jet black 110% on the top and bottom. So not perfect, but pretty great as far as that goes. Oh, and I'm still using out of the box settings, with the exception that I turned the black light down a little. Still looking for settings that I want to use.

I could be wrong, but I think the "Smart Led" feature is why I am seeing great black edges, no flash lighting" in shows, but the flash lighting shows up in menus, etc. I think it's because some of these images aren't black, but a dark greyish, so it's allowing more light to come through. If the screen is supposed to be black, it's black. Just a guess tho.

Are the Samsung SUHD line of TV's the only ones that can do HDR?

Came across the following and got a little confused http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1441271852

If I buy a XXJU7100, according to this release, I'll get a firmware upgrade that will enable HDR? Is this true?
Don't believe that PR. HDR isn't coming to the 7100 nor the 7500 even though they qualify for their "UHD" label.

If you're looking for a more future proof TV look at the 9000/9500 series.

the best you will ever get with those type of sets is the ability to properly display bt2020 colorspace and HDR content, while not actually getting the benefits of it (just the ability to display it in a way that doesnt look way off).

If you want HDR now you need to buy a FALD screen like the x940c or Samsung 9500 or an OLED with HDR support. Edge lit screens trying to show HDR content look bad. It was not ment to be run on edge lit screens. Even the x930c which is sony's top end edgelit screen looks bad when trying to run HDR content, it just does not have the tools needed to properly make it happen.

If getting a cheap HDR screen is your goal, wait for Vizio's 2016 line, they are rumored to all be HDR capable (as all of their major tv's are FALD)

You want the Vizio M series. I just helped a friend set one up over the weekend and he loves it. He has the same viewing habits and needs you do.

You can snag the 65" for $1500 at the usual retailers. Sam's Club is offering the 60" for $1088 right now if you want to save some money. Seems to be $1200 at most other places.

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/60-240hz-smart-uhd-5-hdmi/prod17500159.ip?navAction=push

Input lag is about 18MS. That's as good as it gets for an LED. PQ is excellent for the money you're spending. No it's not going to top the high end Samsungs, Sony 940C, or the OLEDs, but at the $1000 to $1500 price point it's a damn fine set, especially if you want to go above 55".

Have you noticed any issues with the "Motion Blur" that Rtings complains about on these sets? It's the main thing keeping me from being 100% convinced on one.

Can someone let me know if the LG 4K oled tvs are blue tooth enabled? They mention "wireless sound sync". What the heck is that? Is it basically Bluetooth? I'm wondering if it will pair with a bose Bluetooth speaker. If it only pairs with LG products then a big LOL NO at LG.

And do they really only have 3 HDMI inputs??

Thanks!!

When using the Game mode or actually most of the other modes....i get this very odd effect in Fallout 4. It's especially noticeable at night, check the video and watch the foliage. It's hard to explain, but if i stand still...it's all good, but as soon as i move or look around with the foliage in sight...it flickers, it seems to 'light up' and then goes back to normal.

I've disabled super resolution, i've disabled things like dynamic contrast and so on...but it keeps showing. It's so odd, cause other games dont suffer from this. But it's not the game either, i checked Gamersyde's videos for the Xbox One version and it's fine there.

This is what i mean:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/xuroefwy6loquaf/20151111_000644.mp4?dl=0

It's a bit hard to notice, but it is definitely noticeable near the end of the clip when i move backwards and then forwards again.

Oh and i tried enabling PC mode with expert 1 and the problem seems completely gone, this is also with super resolution disabled. Sounds like i won't be using super resolution anymore. Which is a bummer, cause it does make the picture more crisp. But flickering foliage is a no go.

Still really odd that this effect persists with other picture modes like Game, ECO, Standard etc.

This isnt the tv's fault... the game has motion blur added in. If you got the pc version you can disable motion blur and you wont see this.

I too noticed what your describing in bf4 on the ps4, then trying bf4 on the pc with blur disabled didnt show it.

If you dont like the motion on the oled ... I hate to tell you the only thing that can best the motion on these for gaming is the 144-165hz gaming monitors with no pwm.

The oled has no pwm and has no overshoot and has a .3ms pixel response time which is sooo much faster then any other tv tech out there (some tn monitors have sub 3ms response times like the asus swift).

I had the asus swift monitor and I have to tell everyone that the input lag on that was better then any tv or monitor I have used mainly because I could disable vsync and use gsync. My games felt like NES on a crt!! In the end I love oled, I love the Samsung js9000 ( both I have ) but something soo special about how games FEEL on that swift monitor.... obviously everything looks way better on the js9000 then the swift and the oled looks much better then the js9000 but the better the image gets... the worse the games feel and we play games for how they feel...amirite?

Interesting, but it's quite odd how the effect is gone when i enable PC mode and expert 1, disable super resolution and such. It does seem super resolution makes the effect worse, if it's already there. But with that disabled in the PC + expert (or probably any other pic mode) the effect is not there. I'll make another video of that tomorrow.

Well my 5 year old Panasonic TC-P54VT25 plasma made a pop noise and went out while playing Fallout 4. Deciding if I should get this repaired somewhere locally or just look into something new. What would be something newer that is comparable, picture quality wise, to a 50 to 60in plasma with decent input lag?

I saw online for the Vizio M's it said 60" sets and above are 120hz and 55" and below are 60hz. Not sure if that makes a difference on motion blur. Can someone explain what the difference will be? Cause I honestly don't know.

Well finally picked up my JS9000 today! And I'm loving it! Another 9500 Rtings destroyer!! The thing that I'm pleased about the most is game mode not being crap, even though you get s warning when you first select it. The settings game defaults to are damn awful, but with a bit of tweaking there's no doubt it looks pretty much as good as my W900A! But the real star of the show is PC gaming at 4K....in a word wow, 4K at 60hz is just sublime! I definitely got lucky with this set, as the pseudo dimming doesn't always get it right, but it's generally excellent. Not much in he way of DSE for me, just a little edge bloom now and then. Tomb Raider at 4K.....oh my.

I was at his house for about 3 hours and I don't recall any substantial motion blur. He played some BF4 for a while, no problems at all. Later I had him pop in Bloodborne to see how a 30 FPS game runs. Looked fine to me, blur was only apparent if he deliberately panned the camera around quickly. It didn't bug me or him at all in standard play. After we watched some stuff on Hulu, no complaints there either.

I'd say the bigger issue is the DSE (dirty screen effect). It was definitely apparent in the background on one of the desert maps in BF4. Didn't see it in Bloodborne.

Make sure you put sharpness to 0 in game mode, this gives a pristine image just like the pc mode at 50 sharpness. Also enable uhd mode for the hdmi inputs, in game mode this will give you 4:2:2 chroma and in pc mode 4:4:4 chroma.

I checked the firmware 1219 and the new 1422 with my Leo Bodnar and game mode gives 22.6ms avg which is great, pc mode is 55ms... so your better off in game mode for sure.

Once the 4k Leo Bodnar comes out I plan to get it, to see what the lag is on here in 4k. The 48ju7500 I had sadly had 3 times the lag in native 4k from the pc in both game and pc modes. I am not sure if that is the case with the js9000 as I currently dont have my pc completed yet.

Curious... W900a is considered to be the best 1080p gaming TV of all time... how does the JS9000 compare? Aside from 4k, does it do anything better?

With the experience I had with the w900a and the js9000 I have, the uniformity is alot better on the js9000 and almost non existant dse on the js9000.

Color is better on the js9000, contrast is better and clarity is better. The only thing the w900a has over the js9000 is a little bit lower lag BUT back when they started testing the w900a tv most sites posted the middle bar, I can tell you the bottom bar on the w900a was 25ms and the bottom bar on the js9000 is 26ms so I wouldnt even really say the w900a had a large win there either.

What's the "9500 dying destroyer" comment all about?

There seems to be a petty feud (if that) because rtings gave the 9500 a high score than the 9000, saying that it's a better TV. But, from what I understand, they're the only site to do so.

I can't comment as to which TV is actually better, but anecdotally it seems odd to me that the FALD version would be worse.

Does 4:2:2 in game mode for 1080p increase the lag? I set sharpness to 0, I was relieved to see the picture improve! Bizarre why they did that. It seems to be just as fast at 4K, testing with a mouse cursor is the best way to tell, and it feels very responsive, same as 1080p. One thing I would say, is that local dimming doesn't seem to work in PC mode, even though it's activated. In the other modes the blacks blow PC mode out of the water.

Tbh I'm really surprised how good the JS9000 fares in 1080p, it's so good, there's a really smoothness to the picture, but in a good way, very impressed.

I think it's amusing tbh, I say it with tongue firmly in cheek, don't know why Rtings rated the 9000 higher, but for me it's just a testiment to how good the 9000 is, the 9500 is an amazing TV. It's probably more to do with cost vs performance as to why it scored higher really, even though they don't say that.

If I had to guess, it was because - at the time - local dimming wasn't an option in game mode. Which it is now.

That's the #1 reason I decided to give the JS9500 a shot and order one. I'll be using it for PC/Games like 95% of the time, so I want the best screen available for that. When at Best Buy, seeing the 8000, 9000, and 9500 and trying to decide which was the "best" of the three was impossible to me. They all looked good.

Can't wait for it to arrive Saturday and spend a ton of time testing it out. For science!

I played some games with the 43W800C. I didn't notice any lag. I haven't tried the 3D yet because the glasses for this one has to be bluetooth. Anyway, the PQ is great but it's too dark.

Alot of info about these Samsungs are on hardforum. Tests were done and found at least for the ju7100 and ju7500 lag increased when sending the tv 4k native but supposedly that was fixed in a prior firmware update and the js9000 did not have this problem. I know when i had the ju7500 it did indeed have at least 3 frames more lag in 4k.

4:2:2 in game mode does not increase lag as tested by my leo bodnar, also enabling smart led only increases lag by .5ms in game mode! So if you want to use it there is no penalty for it :)

Dewoh, your gonna really enjoy the js9500, its a fantastic gaming tv!!

I'd guess its cost vs performance, but its silly to even humor the idea that an edge lit would be better than a FALD, especially the 9500. I may be hard on the 9500 when comparing it to the x940c, but thats only because its comparing the best of the best, and both TV's are without a doubt the best ever created by there respected companies.

I spent hours with every set available from 65" all the way through 85" (Man was that 85" 7100 tempting...) and there is simply no comparison when you put them all in a dim room, the 9500 and 940c *and the eg9600* just trump absolutely everything else.

Ah great, tbh once all the settings are sorted, I'm not finding the chroma as big of an issue as I've seen on other TV's. Just another reason to be loving it!

SamsClub has this TV on sale this friday for $998. Vizio 65" 4K D65u-D2. The TV I wanted was this one the M65-C1. I'm really just going to be using this to watch TV and Blu-rays etc for the next 5+ years. I won't be seriously gaming on or anything. Is it worth getting that first TV or should I hold out for a hopeful sale this year for the latter?

Do you guys think a 60" TV, as represented by the blue rectangle, is appropriate for this space? The screen size would cover the entire rectangle, not just the part inside. Viewing distance will be around 9 feet. 60" would definitely be immersive but I feel like it might be a little too big. This is one reason why I am leaning towards a 55" display, specifically the Vizio M55. The M55 is also about $350 cheaper. It seems that the consensus on here though is to opt for the M60 because it has a 120Hz panel and provides better motion handling. But what I'm wondering is if I would even see any of those benefits since I would only be using a TV exclusively for playing PS4 and watching Netflix, YouTube, Twitch, etc. The only thing that is tempting about the M60 is supposedly it will be on sale around Black Friday for $800. So I'm not sure what to do. Should I wait? Can I purchase either TV now at Walmart and then have any sale price honored within 30 days? How does that work? I have some time off work these next few days so I was hoping to make progress on my entertainment setup but I may need to wait I guess.

Also, sorry for the low lighting and poor IQ. It's also worth pointing out that I still have to work on cable management and extending the length of that media bench. Oh and right now I have a 40" TV.

Personally I think you are going way to small. 65" would look much better.

Definitely get the 60", that 40 looks tiny for a room that size and the distance you're sitting at. You could actually go bigger if you wanted, in my opinion. There is just a bunch of unused space and if you're not filling it with anything else, why not put a bigger screen on the wall? Besides the immersion factor, the better motion handling will be better for movies as well if you watch those on Netflix or Blu-Rays.

Where is it rumored that the M60 will be on sale? I'm also interested.

60" is too small.

I would go for 65" at least based on that picture if not 70"

Personally I think you are going way to small. 65" would look much better.

I think the picture make the projected 60" size look a little smaller than it seems when sitting directly across from it. To me, the jump from 40" to 60" is substantial. The Vizio M65 at $1499 is also a little more than I would want to spend. I still have to budget around $200 to have the TV mounted with all wiring concealed. I realize I could save money and do this myself but I don't feel like experimenting on my walls. I'd rather just have it done professionally for the peace of mind factor.

Supposedly Dell will have the M60 for $799 on November 26/27.

Does anyone know if Walmart would honor this price before, during, or after the TV actually goes on sale? My preference is to take possession of the TV at the time of sale, rather than wait for something to come in the mail.

Anyone have any suggestions for a wall mount, ideally one that allows full motion: pull away from the wall, tilt up/down, move the screen left/right?

Can someone let me know if the LG 4K oled tvs are blue tooth enabled? They mention "wireless sound sync". What the heck is that? Is it basically Bluetooth? I'm wondering if it will pair with a bose Bluetooth speaker. If it only pairs with LG products then a big LOL NO at LG.

And do they really only have 3 HDMI inputs??

Thanks!!

Yep only three Hdmi. Wireless sound link is LG's product. Hdmi number is low, but if you buy a tv like the ef9500 you probably have a high end surround or worse case a sound bar.
