Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Fellow Gaffers, I desperately need some help!

I'm going to buy a new TV this weekend because there is going to be some mild discounts in México and I don't have any idea of what to do with low budget. I have tried some sites but it's really hard to find good information about the best lowbudget tvs that are actually available here where I live (also it's flooded with bad brands).

What I want: to play videogames on it, only eventually watch a game or a movie. Also it is very important that the TV is reliable, customer service in méxico is horrible (even if it's Sony or Samsung).

What I do NOT care: Apps, Operating system, Netlix, menus, etc. When I checked amazon reviews all people praise or complain are the apps, they score 1 star to the TV just because the netflix app doesnt work properly.

This is list of models I could afford and are available:
LG 43'' LF5900
LG 42'' LF5800
LG 49'' LF5900
LG 49'' LF5400
LG 43'' IPS? 4K UF7600
Panasonic Viera 40'' TC-40CS600X
Philips 40'' 40PFL4609/F8
Philips 43'' IPS 43PFL4609
Philips 50'' 50PFL4909 120PMR
Samsung 40'' Series 6100
Samsung 40'' UN40J5350AF
Sony Bravia 42'' W80B

Anyone have any suggestion? tip? recommendation? Thanks in advance!

The Sony Bravia is probably a good choice. Have you considered the Vizio M series as well?

So now the deals for Black Friday are pretty much out. What's the best deal overall and what's the best set for under $1000 this year? Are TV's like Element even worthwhile at the basement prices?

Does anyone know if you can keep UHD colour on when watching normal content (JS9000)? It's a bit annoying having to change 2 options and a TV reset everytime I want to put a game on. I use an amp on just one HDMI.

I got my JS9500 calibrated by Chad B today, and holy moly what a difference. I thought I had the picture relatively close by just eyeballing it, but it was pretty far off reference. The best part is that he reduced blooming a tad while at the same time increasing light output. Another thing is that the sharpness needed to be at 13, otherwise very fine detail was lost. I've always read to set sharpness to 0, so I was surprised to see that's not always for the best.

Yeah, I had to up my sharpness to 15 on Sky, as it looked really soft, so much better now! It seems to only apply to game and PC mode, makes it look rough. Any idea on my UHD colour question?

No, sorry. I've been wondering that myself. There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with leaving it on, but I can't say for sure.

Reposting this asking for advice

SamsClub has this TV on sale this friday for $998. Vizio 65" 4K D65u-D2. The TV I wanted was this one the M65-C1. I'm really just going to be using this to watch TV and Blu-rays etc for the next 5+ years. I won't be seriously gaming on or anything. Is it worth getting that first TV or should I hold out for a hopeful sale this year for the latter?

This isnt the tv's fault... the game has motion blur added in. If you got the pc version you can disable motion blur and you wont see this.

it might be his TV. i see the same exact issue in Fallout 4 (however it's way more noticeable to me in the daylight, which is weird) on my plasma set. i don't see it at all on my PC monitor. disabling motion blur helped it tremendously but i occasionally still see it flicker from time to time.

You want the Vizio M series.

thanks for the replies! in reading about M series i'm not seeing great scores across the board for PQ/IQ or support for 4:4:4 at any resolution. i'm not a competitive gamer so the low(ish) requirement for input lag is a secondary concern behind a nice crisp picture. i'm not seeing the advantages to buying a Vizio M over the Sony set I linked in that regard. especially when that Sony set is right now, not even $1100.

Wow waited for BF sales on the Sony XBR55X810C

... Didn't find any ....

... And now it's $100 more than it was last week everywhere ...

yeah i almost just went ahead and pulled the trigger on that set last week since it was <$1000.

I literally went to buy the 55x810c today and was like... wait it was $100 less last week... should I buy a different set now? Or wait longer? Or buy it for $100 more now?

For $1100 I am wondering if I should instead spend a bit more on one of the samsung TVs instead.

what advantages do you see in the Sony over the Vizio?

going by my original list: picture quality rates higher (PQ, upscaling, 4:4:4 support) than the Vizio, and it's currently cheaper. low lag is not the end-all-be-all issue for me to be concerned with. although looking now, apparently the Sony has over double the lag of my Viera (17ms) so i actually have no idea how noticeable that will be.

Don't know if this has been already posted, but rtings put out their review of the LG 9500. They found the input lag at just over 53 ms.

What's exciting about their review is that, despite it being the best image quality I've ever seen, they still found flaws in the grey uniformity. Meaning that even though OLED is god like, there's till room for improvement.

TVs in 5 years are gonna be awesome.

Ordered the Samsung UN48JU7500 48" Class Curved 4K Ultra HD 3D Smart LED TV.

Sony lost my money because they raised the price of their TV by $100.

So I decided to buy a more expensive curved TV instead, with no tax and free shipping from Newegg it was a pretty good deal.

Fantastic gaming tv you grabbed!! Enjoy it! Make sure to out uhd color on, turn on game moxe and reduce sharpness to 0, warm 2 color, custom color, backlight around 10-14 and contrast at 95. Shpuld get you very close to standard 6500k 2.2 gamma.

Yeah looks like I'm getting the Vizio M 50". The 50" 7100 & 7500 are not worth the price increase. That way, upgrading to OLED in 2-3 years will be an easy choice.

Yeah it's not the end all be all, it has its flaws. Input lag is meh right now for example (which a LG rep said in email they're working on, to follow updates), minor uniformity, then the vignetting/yellow/pink stuff. But it is to me and many others the best there is right now. In 3-5 years when most tv's are oled and they fix the little things, everyone will be in for a treat.

That's actually something updates can improve?

I really want an OLED but I'm leaning towards the JS9500 too, if the next line of OLED's don't improve input lag. I mean, I spent the majority of the time playing games. I'm not sure if I can consider an OLED a upgrade in that regard at all. Especially when I like playing the games where input lag matters the most.

They said they're working on input lag? Can you link me?

7 year old Samsung LCD in our living room just said goodnight. It had a good run, but I was never really fond of the picture regardless of settings I tried or personal tweaking.

I have a Panasonic G25 plasma as my gaming TV in the basement. Is there anything out there that can compete with a Panny plasma in terms of PQ right now?

Who is the current top dog for LEDs? I've heard lots of great things about the Vizio M series. Last time I was in the market for a TV, Vizio was still an up-and-comer, but seems like now they are a great brand. I'd probably default to a Samsung unless there is something better?

Also, is the consensus still that 1080p is the way to go? 4K content seems years off...

TVs with the best internals are all 4K now, even though it's not here yet, if you buy a 1080p set you are stuck buying something that is mid or low tier

Vizio is the top quality budget brand. They make really nice sets for the price. Samsung and Sony are also making really good top tier TVs now.

Take a look at this for starters

Best for Budget: Vizio

Best For Flagship Models: Sony and Samsung (Samsung gets the nod in most cases)

Avoid at all cost: LG (unless going OLED)

Consider only if you can get a realllllly good deal and arent looking for top tier anything: Sharp (Seriously these screens can be had for super cheap, our local best buy was letting a Sharp 80" 30U go for $1799!!! I almost grabbed it just to have an 80" in our bedroom)

Also anyone looking for a Samsung 7100, 8600 and 9000, Best Buy has been seeing a TON of 30 day returns on them, and putting them out as open box items with 30% knocked off the price (and negotiable). Great deal so long as you do a good inspection of the screen. Our local Best Buy has a 78"8600 open item for $3999.

Still looking for some advice if anyone thinks this is worth it.

Oh yeah. Samsung released an update before that really addressed input lag for example, dropping lag from the 40-50 range to the mid 20's.

Fallout 4 is the game i am going to be playing for a damn long time and for the most part the game looks great on the EC9300, but for some reason enabling Super Resolution (both on low and medium) ruins things in the game graphically. I spoke on this before, it makes the foliage and fenches flicker, when i have them in my sign it looks like it lights up and then goes away again. Fallout 4 so far is the only game doing this. I am using Super Resolution because i love how it makes games look even more crisp, more detailed. GTA V for example looks awesome with it. Without it i notice it instantly, it's less crisp, more blurry.

I assume there is no way around this right? So odd that this is the only game. I don't have flickering foliage, fenches in any other game.

That was an email my co-worker got when he emailed then complaining about that and judder. It said "thank you for your comments about input lag and judder performance of your new tv. Please keep your eyes out for future firmware updates. Any other comments about the experience with your new tv please feel free to contact us again."

I wouldn't doubt they do it. They did retroactively update their webOS to other sets before iirc. And those are two of the biggest software knocks against the set. They do take care of oled owners like they shown with the panel dramas.

I just picked up the JS9000, first impressions are great. Really really great. I'll get back with you on more detailed impressions soon. I'm pretty sure I got a rtings-like panel. No light bleed, great uniformity. Super impressed so far.

Just read a few reviews; I think I found my new TV. But the price tag is pretty hefty, especially considering it doesn't even have full-lit backlight.

Friday the 13th must be my lucky day.

Went to buy the Vizio M50 at my local BB and they actually had a 50" open box for $566 (TV is currently on sale for $699). Bought the TV and a 2 year warranty just in case and it came out to $675 total. Extremely happy.

God, I hope so. I really really really do. The second they update it and lower it (even in the 30s, so by about half) I'd be all over it, again. It's such a badass TV.

Thing is LG really don't help themselves, by making the 9100 and 9500 non VESA compliant (what the hell is that about), and sticking their own wall mount/bracket up, that just puts yet another barrier up for people who weren't sure in the first place, like me. Doesn't make sense, great that they look after the people who spent their money on it, but surely they should be making it accessible to as many as possible. That coupled with high lag etc just puts it into the dust.

Yeah I'm more hoping they address the 24p judder more so lol. I'm ok with the input lag since I don't competitive game on consoles. It was pretty noticeable with the bells and whistles on, horrible actually, but when switching to game, bare bones, and turning off the motion stuff its not bad. Doesn't feel like mid 50's ms, more like upper 30-40ish to me. I won't complain if they fix this though.

It's just hard to give up the contrast and pop. As a plasma guy it's the successor to my Panasonic and Pioneer plasmas. Love it.

That said, I wouldn't complain if Sony released one with their motion tech and would probably buy it and give the wife the LG.

What do you guys use to calibrate your settings? Is there a certain static image that I can use as a reference on my TV?

I'm thinking of buying a new TV this black Friday. Does anyone have any experience with it? I would be using it mainly for gaming and watching TV shows. It seems to have a pretty decent input lag rating of 27.4 ms in game mode. But I'm reading from rtings.com that the picture quality isn't very good.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZIGRVU8/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Are there any other TVs around this price point of $800-$1000 that would be better? One of my friends recommended the Vizio M series to me. How are these in comparison?

I ended up replacing my broken Panasonic Plasma VT25 with a LG 55EG9100. It looks really great so far, the black levels are pretty incredible looking. I have been going back and fourth with some of my settings, trying to stay in PC input with Game Mode on. Does anyone have any settings that worked well for them while staying in these modes?

The input lag for these TVs seem to be low, which is really nice. Is the picture quality good for these TVs for gaming and movies/TV? Out of curiosity, why is this model cheaper than the TVs Samsung offers with similar specs?

But to keep it simple Samsung is the bigger brand so you pay a bit of premium on top of it.
