Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

My parents all of a sudden bought a 55" LG 55EG9100. Did they make a good purchase? Any tips to calibrate it?
They bought one of the best TV money can buy right now. I own one and picture quality is unrivaled. Last night I finally watched a movie on it since it is only for games normally. It was excellent. Called my wife into the man cave to take a peek a day even she commented on the holy shit blacks and contrast.

Your parents have excellent taste.

Lord Almighty, I hope the B variants use the same model because I think I've found my next set.

Time to move the Kuro to the bedroom.

Another Kuro owner tempted to buy the B6 here.

Im a little annoyed that some shadow detail is being lost by their strategy to avoid blotchy blacks and the problem of tint on viewing angles. But i think its time.

Any thoughts on these TVs?
Looking for a 4k set for the bedroom, primarily for video games and occasionally blu-rays & Netflix. I'm not on a super strict budget, but saving money is always nice ;)

These are the ones I'm currently looking at.

Because of the wall I'm gonna mount the TV on, I can't go much bigger than 50" unfortunately. That and I'm going to be sitting fairly close to it. Any thoughts?

Sony X930D reviews are starting to come out. Looks like a dud...

Input Lag: 51-52ms; shame since it can do 1080p120

3D is locked at 60hz

Seems to be the latest example of PQ suffering when the focus becomes making it thinner.

And some complaints about bending

I just bought the Js7000 yesterday and I'm really liking it.

I was between that and the Sony 850C and ended up going with the Samsung because it was $200 cheaper and I didn't need 55 inches

Is Samsung naming its models differently in different countries?

I'm thinking about getting the Samsung JU6850 (50"), because its the cheapest(900€) 4k model I can find with HDR.
Wanted to ask what you guys think about it. I want to use it with my Ps4. What are the downsides?
But I can't find an english language link to the product...

The JU6850 is the Amazon model, JU6870 for example would be Austria, JU6890 would be Germany

Jesus. Gorgeous lineup, I'll be curious about the B6. It'll probably still be too expensive, bah.

Wonder if they'd be able to add in a scheduled refresh, as I'd be using it with my Living room PC, and would probably need to run it somewhat frequently.

EDIT: Sad to hear in the Gizmodo review about how it handles upscailing poorly. If that's the case I might have to pass given how much 1080 content I consume, gaming or otherwise:

"Upscaling is so bad you’re better off tossing your whole DVD collection than watching it on this TV."

Yup that's a killer for me. Still waiting for a good oled for gaming for my next tv then.

So this is the year I finally jump into a 4k HDR compatible TV. The three main I'm looking at are (all 55"), the Panasonic DX902, the Sony X93D, and the Samsung KS9000. Possibly a LG B6, depending on price and aussie availability.

Has there been any general consensus for heavy gaming between, or is it still early days in terms of each's potential downfalls? The X93D reviews in particular have me leaning towards either the Samsung or LG. Any gaffers here seen a few in action? Online seems rather bare at the moment as well.

Big time - I can't upgrade my tv, internet speed and computer all at once, so if I got a 4K tv it has to be able to upscale well until I can upgrade everything else. Really bummed since this lineup was looking like it checked all my boxes.

Loving my new P Series (65 inch)

4 times the local dimming zones as the M70 I took back to Costco, and Dolby Vision looks pretty amazing (Marco Polo on Netflix)

Can't wait for the HDR10 update.

Same. Really the biggest box that seemed left unchecked was input lag and this looked like it was going to be acceptable (still who knows about the lower end models). The fact that they got that in line made me think that they were actively trying to make the oled more attractive for gaming, but upscaling can be just as important.

Oh well, time to see how the lower models pan out and then wait for the next revision.

The X93D outdoes the KS9000 on black level, but has a 51ms+ input lag currently, making the KS9000 a better choice for gaming (unless Sony releases some kind of update, but you shouldn't plan on it). Not sure on the DX902, since it's not available in the US.

On my 65" X930C, right around midnight as promised, Sony added their new ULTRA service to the Android TV interface. I can't justify spending $30 on any of these movies, but the trailers looked decent ONCE THEY BUFFERED UP. My TV is hardwired to the ethernet, and other 4K digital sources like Netflix and Ultraflix seem to buffer in faster.

I have hope for it, especially if they can get some price drops going.

Hopefully they'll fix that with a firmware update. There's no reason why 1080p scaling to 4K should be that bad.

I hope that's possible. I don't know anything really about tv tech, just looking in as i consider my next purchase. If it could be fixed, the B6 is still my living room PC candidate. I need upscale because let's be real, I ain't running most games at 4k60fps for awhile.

Sony fixed upscaling with firmware updates as well as add 4K @ 60Hz. So it is possible depending on their chipset.

Eh, I'll wait for more reviews. That review seems a little bare-bones on the details. It's not clear if the reviewer attempted to adjust the picture settings or anything to mitigate the problem. Last year's models did fine on upscaling. Besides, it's early and there will be many firmware updates.

Also, 480p DVD's are going to look like shit on any large flat-panel display so I'm not sure why you'd use that example, but in the article the reviewer mentions problems with 1080p content as well. Again, I'd wait for other reviews before writing the set off.

Good to hear about last models not having upscailing issues, and I'm glad there will be plenty of updates. Again, I am totally new in the TV tech realm, so if it's likely not a big deal that bodes well for me anyways.

Wake me up when B6 has a price tag. Then drug me to sleep for another year or two until I can afford it.

My brother is not on NeoGAF, so i am asking this for him.

He's looking for a new TV. 50 to 60 inch, but 50 or 55 inch is fine if the TV is damn good he told me. He used to have Sony W829b and he's looking for a TV that is even more impressive in terms of picture quality. He's very fond of that on the Sony, but he now intends to go for 4K. Now what we are wondering is, is a 4K TV going to be fine for the current consoles? Take Xbox One for example, still several games that are 720p and 900p, is he going to notice this due to the 4K upscaler and thus better off with a Full HD TV or will this be fine?

I recall reading some comments a while ago that a 4K TV wasn't doing certain games any favors, but doesn't that simply depend on what set you get? In the early days of 4K i remember there were some 4K TV's that werent exactly 4K at all.

So yeah....

- Will a 4K screen be fine for Xbox One and PS4 and Wii U?
- I assume Sony or Samsung would be best, which sets should he look out for?

Nobody? :)

Seems like nonsense considering the EF9500 handles up scaling very well. 1080p blurays look breathtaking.

I would wait for an informed opinion rather than lean on what Gizmodo says.

This pretty much mirrors me to a tee. I'm in Australia too, you got any info on release dates?

Don't downplay the Panny either, seems like a fantastic TV from the reviews I've seen, though the input lag could be a bit better.

Agreed. The Gizmodo article reads like they attended a press event, spent some time with the display, wrote up some basic impressions and called it a review.

Compare that to the HDTVTest review completed by David Mackenzie. He calibrated at least three different G6 units and used that as the basis for his review. Under the benchmark test results he lists scaling as excellent.

Reviewed posted theirs today
http://televisions.reviewed.com/content/lg-g6-4k-oled-tv-review

They measured 34ms for input lag so that is now two separate sources reporting that figure.

Your going to love that display, watch some 4k HDR Dolby Vision on Vudu (Mad Max FR, Pacific Rim, Lego Movie. NETFLIX, Marco Polo soon Daredevil.

Casting with the Android tablet remote is awesome, all picture settings on the tablet.

can't wait too try, been reading up on and nothing but good things bout this

I’m leaning towards the E6, which should be the same except one less HDMI port and the wattage isn’t as powerful on the sound bar. Neither makes a difference to me as I go through my receiver for everything.

One thing I’m concerned with, and not really because of the Gizmodo review, but how the upscaling is handled through a cable tuner, Comcast specifically (which is what I have).

From what I’ve read online, most people comment on how great the upscaling is through blu-ray discs or other services besides cable. If anyone here has a G6, and has Comcast, I would be interested to hear your opinion on how well it handles upscaling when watching various channels/stations in 720 or 1080.

What does game mode on Vizio do? Does it kill the picture lik samsungs do?

I want a natively low input lag TV. What should I look for.

4k ofc

What exactly are the differences between the B, C, E Models?

Had an ask around at a few brick and mortar retailers, plus the companies via Facebook. All play the pr, "later this year, please wait for news". Which I suppose we will just have to!

Seeing the positive impressions regarding the P series Vizio though, it seems I'm tempted again. Cheaper, Dolby Vision support, and with extremely favourable panel conditions. It's a shame noone here stocks all, would be fantastic to see side by side by side. The price on the 65 P series though would translate to just under 3k here. If that's how it travels... Might just dip as a stopgap until OLED becomes more affordable in a few years time. Anyone here pick up the P Series and have a few impressions?

Congrats on the new tv it looks really nice. Have you watched sports at all on it yet? Vizio's performance with sports and worse motion blur has kept me for pulling the trigger thus far, but looking at their website the new p series is a serious value.

yea, im getting the Vizio P65-C1. My wife thinks im settling because it doesn't come with a TV tuner and i could get a better TV at the same price. How would you convince your wife that the TV is a good buy?

i could get a better TV at the same price.

This is the part to work on with her. Yes, you can get a TV with better overall PQ for around the same price. But it is probably 55", not 65". And it probably doesn't come with features of the Vizio (FALD, DV, WCG) or an "OS" that is as future proof as Vizio's new SmartCast.

So much better than the M70 I originally had.

Are you over at avsforum too? I think I saw these pics already, but not here. Maybe I'm wrong. Edit: You're DisplayCalNoob, right? We've encountered each other before.
Im basically just waiting for the rtings review of the 2016 p series to see what they have to say before I consider pulling the trigger on the 55. 65 would be ideal but that's out of my pricerange, and im still hearing great things about the 55 in spite of it being IPS. The review should be up end of this week or beginning of next.

I've been gathering opinions on it here.

A user over there posted a 4gb file with some good 4k samples, in case anyone finds that useful.

P3 color gamut, dolby vision and hdr10, 4k, FALD and an android tablet for that price? It sells itself.
