Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Got in EPP, in case anyone's wondering what the prices are as of now (11/22/16) on the KS8000's:

49" - $674.99

55" - $729.99

60" - $854.98

65" - $1079.99

Did you give up on the OLED?

Most likely. I really wanted to love it, but the way the auto brightness makes colorful scenes look duller really soured me. I think it was most telling when someone said that the OLED wasn't ideal for a private well-lit room and better suited for a living room or private home theater.

At the very least Best Buy doesn't have a restock fee with their returns, so I plan to nab the KS8000 on Saturday and give it a try. But I have a feeling I'm going to be more satisfied with it due to the LED's increased vibrancy and whatever picture differences between the two are probably going to be minimal for me.

Wow, those are some nice discounts. How does one even get into this EPP program anyway? Strictly only for employees?

I'm tempted on those EPP prices, but I don't want to have to wait another two weeks or so for the TV to arrive. Especially as I've heard the shipping service they use is a piece of crap, with some people receiving broken sets.

Though the idea does exist to buy the TV now from Best Buy and return the cheaper, unopened TV purchased online.

Could someone with EPP please post screenshots of the prices as of today? I want the ks8000 55" or maybe the 60". Does anyone know when this sale ends? I'm trying to get an EPP invite.

Prices as of Nov 22nd

The 60inch version of the KS8000 is $854.99 and the 55inch is $729.99 I myself picked up the 65inch KS9000 thanks to a fellow Gaffer who posted the following:

For the guys trying to get in the EPP deal, send a PM to wf72431 at slickdeals, he hooked me up in exchange for a $5 Amazon GC

https://slickdeals.net/forums/private.php?do=newpm&u=574757

Basically, someone with higher privileges needs to create a new EPP account for you and you order using that... invites dont work anymore

Thanks. I'm gonna try to price match at best buy tomorrow by showing them my account on my phone.

Well I broke my Panny ST60 so i'm back in the TV market.. which nearly killed me the first time around.

I think it's now between the 55" KS8000 or the 55" XBR850D. Which one, guys. Low input lag is paramount and it sounds like Sony's is kind of high.

Why is size called a 'class' in the US? 55" isn't a 'class' it's a size. It'd make sense if they were referring to the model class, e.g. ES etc.

According to "leaks" they're planning on B7/C7/E7/G7 models again. I think one of those models will probably have 3D. Maybe. :v

It's always such a gamble when it comes to buying televisions. With my luck, they'll keep 3D but it will only be on the premium E & G models.

The last rep I spoke to said that Amazon is the only retailer they will straight price-match these days.

Absolutely not true in my case. They first said that they don't do price matches except for televisions. Which is when I interjected and said that in fact it was a tv I wanted a price match on.

Then got turned down once I informed him it was through Samsung's EPP.

Totally shot me down.

Alas I'll have to wait until next week for my set.

Got my 65" B6 today. Holy shit. I thought I'd be missing my plasma but the moment the TV turned on I fell in love. Now to fiddle with settings to get my preferred picture.

I do have that unfortunate problem with my PS4 Pro where I get a black screen unless I switch my HDCP to 1.4 :(

Thanks for the EPP tip! Well, went ahead and ordered a 65in ks9000 and a 4k bluray player. Pretty excited now

nah, you'll be ok. The new TVs will be announced at CES and there will be plenty of time to pick up the current models on discount (though they are already pretty cheap, 3k for a 65 E6 is fire).

And the 3D is already somewhat premium, in that the B6 doesn't have it.

From the Buying a 4K TV for PS4K thread!. In case people were interested in the 6300. Will do some more shots and record a video in the near future. Just in finals right now so it's difficult to find time.

I'm really astounded by the quality of the KU6290/6300 (UK6000)

Picked this guy up today for my folks and did some quality comparison shots. Obviously It can't really show the expanded color gammut as the display turns it to SDR when we share here. But the TV is fantastic and I couldn't recommend it more. It does a very amicable job at HDR too. Do not be afraid to buy this set. and to those who said it's a bottom of the barrel TV, you couldn't be more wrong. This is some incredible value on display here.

Sorry for some blooming on some, I didn't let the camera settle on a few of the shots and got some weird lens flare.

You may very well be right, but if anything your efforts -and great work btw- have made me double down on the belief that the 6000 series is ass. The colors and saturation on the 8000 are punchy and have that "wow" to it.

But yes I get what you mean that for the price the 6000 series is a solid choice. I just think it should be important to lead with that.

I had ChadB calibrate my OLED65B6P and he set the color mode to 'normal' for HDR Standard, so that's where I'm going to leave it.

He was only able to calibrate 70% of the brightness range for HDR. The light output values are different in HDR standard than they are in the ISF modes for SDR content.. and they only go up 3/4 of the way to the peak brightness.

Hopefully future models from LG will allow full calibration of HDR modes.. but I'm still very happy with this set.

So guys, I need some help.

I bought a KS8000 55", hooked it up this afternoon, and my wife and I are... let's just say unimpressed. I'm coming from a plasma (which I moved downstairs) so I knew the picture wouldn't be as good, but yikes. I was toying with the settings, tried to make them similar to my other tv (which was a Samsung plasma, so most settings adjustments are the same or incredibly similar), though I know it's not going to work 1:1, and it's just no-go. I tried rtings.com settings, and those were awful for my set. Whites are super crushed with contrast at 100, so I know I'm going to have to move that down, the picture has an annoying grainy look to it, and stuff in motion, like soccer or basketball, looks like, well, ass. Following the ball is bad, and even the look of the ball in motion looks poor. Hell, even people just, you know, walking looks bad. Still pictures or a headshot of someone talking looks ok, but most motion stuff is very hard to watch. I haven't tried any video games yet, but I'm kind of worried. I wanted to order a Pro tomorrow, but now I don't know. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

I'm thinking I should have gone OLED, but that is just too much $$$.

What auto-brightness?

Oh there's a substantial difference and given the seeming ability for people to get the KS8000's for a great price it's definitely the recommended path. However for those looking to get into 4K and wants some HDR capability, the 40" KU6290 is a great entry level choice.

I'll cover the missing features and try to describe the limitations when I make my video, but I just want people to know, if you're on a tighter budget or just don't think HDR is settled enough yet, you can still get in and have a great experience.

I'm looking for someone to calibrate my B6 as well. How did you find a calibrator as I haven't had much luck finding one. I made a call to an A/V shop that had good reviews on Yelp today to inquire about it, but he didn't call me back. I know there's a fine a calibrator map on AVforums but it's all UK based.

You can also check avsforum.com for calibrators.

I live in the Houston area, Humble, TX to be precise. I did check the forum, I tried using their find a calibrator map but it only showed two in the UK.... maybe ti's broken or it was never utilized.

Nevermind, I was using the wrong forum either that or there's two with very similar names. I found a specific forum I can inquire in. Thanks.

Yah, avsforum and avforums are two different ones.

After thorough consideration I ended up ordering a 55" B6, and not a KS8000. The fact that the price difference between the two was almost nothing, and that LG will reduce the HDR input lag, ended up being the decisive factor.

Hopefully I'll get a flawless panel. I have an 80 days return option if not.

:)

He wants to push everything to the point where whites are clipping, then wonder why ABL is kicking in.

Don't be a snob about it. It's not like I'm trying to burn out my retinas. This is a specific thing this TV does, and it can't be controlled.

It's disappointing when you've been using an LED in your room for so long.

I just learned that through my work's employee discount shopping program, i can get a discount on the Samsung KS8000. Is this the EPP thing people are talking about? I assume this is the best deal i'll be able to find for this TV?

Be advised that the 850D is IPS, you're going to physically hurt yourself watching those blacks coming from a ST60 ;)
And yeah, input lag isn't that great on it
The KS8000 seems like a better choice

Agreed. A couple months back the X850d was what I had my sights set on. After reading reviews on it and other Sony 2016 sets I agonized over the revelation that Samsung -when it came to an LED- set would be the way to go based on the criteria I had set for myself.

The KS8000 also seems like the better choice to me.

Ebay through Adorama has the 65" LG OLED65E6P for $2999.

Drop Drop Drop Baby. Still don't know if I'll jump yet because of the input lag or wait for 2017.

Also that Samsung is making me unsure as well. I also get that Employee discount and it is $1079 for the 65" KS8000 O_O

Reminder, I am coming from the Panasonic 65VT60.

If you're coming from the Panasonic, the OLED will be the only set (of the two you listed) that will seem like a significant upgrade (imo). I'm doing the same exact thing - re: waiting for the 2017s - but the 2016 models should still be at a solid price in March if the 2017 enhancements don't knock your socks off.

I have a ZT60 and i purchased a KS8000 in the last month for another room strictly for PS4K and Xbox One.

You will not be impressed with the KS8000 if you start to compare with your plasma. The gaming looks great though.

I am glad i saw this myself and did not make that mistake. OLED is the only option i believe.

There is nothing snobbish about it. You are physically trying to get a display tech to do something it is not designed for. It can absolutely be controlled, but you will not listen. You cannot push the light output to peak and not have ABL kick in. I am watching hockey on mine more than anything and there is no dimming that occurs on a full white screen.

If I had an LED in my room it would change nothing, as we have different objectives. I would simply have a set with a lot of unused headroom in terms of light output. If I push the OLED to 85 or so, it simply results in eye discomfort in my environment. If that is the light output you truly need in your room then you just have the wrong tech. If it is not the light output you need, but you prefer to stare at the sun because that's what you are used to, then I would encourage you to try getting used to it in a proper state (and not side by side or back and forth), but at the end of the day it's your money and your eyes.

This is the experience I had going from a Pioneer Kuro to the Vizio P. Though the Vizio certainly did some things very well, it had enough glaring flaws coming from my frame of reference, that I just couldn't watch it. And honestly, though I haven't used the Samsung, I would expect the edge lit set to compare even less favorably to the plasma than the locally dimmed display did.

So I got my B6 now.
When I play HDR content from Amazon there's a little HDR thing on the upper right for a couple of seconds to indicate HDR is on.

When I watch Netflix Dolby Vision content there isn't. How do I know whether it's on or not?

Weevilone isn't being snobbish at all, if you ask me. He's plainly stating what kind of a result you were trying to eke out of a technology that is inherently not able to do so.
