Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So, assuming I'm not streaming 120Hz content, is there any discernible difference between 60 and 120? I'm really tempted to jump on this TV, since it apparently calibrates nicely and has pretty low lag. I'm just worried that the lack of true 120Hz will be apparent in the near future.

Like he stated, it's for combatting the motion blur inherit to LCDs.
60hz tvs will blur a lot when things are moving quickly.
There are also 240hz panel tvs out there.

I know, what I'm asking is this:

Since the fake 120Hz panels are only simulating 120Hz for the sake of motion blur, will I notice any tangible difference between a fake 120Hz panel and a real one, assuming the content I'm viewing doesn't in fact have 120 separate frames per second.

I got an Insignia NS-32E400NA14 32" LED TV yesterday. Been wanting to get a TV for a while cause I've only had an Asus VH242H 24" LCD PC monitor for the past few years and I wanted something bigger than that. I got it for a pretty good price, $280 minus taxes, and it looks pretty good. However, it doesn't look amazing to me. I feel that my Asus monitor has a richer/deeper color to it and I've been trying to get something similar going on my new TV. I've messed around with some of the settings but I'll fully admit that I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to fine tuning these kinds of things to get the best possible image quality. I am using the TV for my 360 and my laptop (I'll use the Asus for my laptop for the most part) and I plan to use it for my Xbox One once that comes out. My question is, what can I do to get the best possible picture out of my new TV for my Xboxes and PC. I don't really care how regular cable TV looks since I don't watch all that much live TV at the moment. Also, and this is a somewhat related issue, I'd like to be able to use my X12 Turtle Beaches on my TV and my laptop at the same time if that's possible. Any info or tips for these issues would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

A quick and easy to calibrate the tv is to follow this Cnet guide. It isn't the best way but it gets it in the ballpark. There are calibration dvds out there that do the job better.

They're not fake 120hz panels though.
99.9% of all content being sent to these 120 and 240hz TVs is 24/30/60fps.

The difference is less motion blur. Not much else to it.

There are fake 120hz panels, not sure if thats what potam is referring to though.

I got one of these sets, motion looks worse than my 2005 Sony XBR.

Oh ok.
I'm only talking about true refresh rates for TVs.

You guys are right that some TVs advertise these bogus higher refresh rates because they use some motion interpolation gimmicks to smooth things out.

That's definitely junk.
Real 120hz/240hz tvs are out there, and do a better job handling motion for 60hz content.

So I'm thinking of getting the Sony 50" W6 LED KDL-50W656A. Anyone else have one, what are your impressions of it?

If I do get this one it should be around the 1st week the PS4 comes out, but I could get the 42" inch one now, bearing in mind this is going in a bedroom where the PS4 will be played, is it just worth it to wait for the 50" one instead of the 42" one?

I've seen so many different models now things are just getting hazy.

Would really like to upgrade my TV to a 1080p 120hz after seeing the difference between 60hz and 120hz in a store, but that was during a movie, is the difference just as noticeable during games? I assume it would be but just trying to make a wise choice because money is a bit of an issue. I want the cheapest thing I can get that's 1080p, 120hz (or 60 if games aren't as noticeable as movies), and around 50 inches but is still not complete crap. I know cheap and quality never go together but I was hoping to just find the closest thing to it. I'd like to keep it as far under $800 as possible. I'll take a small dip in quality as long as it's not really bad if it saves me a benjamin.

The more I think about it, the more I'm considering just springing for the 50" ST60.

Is that the kind of TV that I can reasonably expect to still use in 5 years and not feel outdated (for reference, I still enjoy my 42" 720p Samsung, but I feel the need to bump up to 1080p for next gen)?

Monitors/TVs that accepts 240fps input and have a "true" 240Hz refresh rate ?
I don't think so (or at least they are not widely available to the public but rather for scientific applications, etc.)

@NathanCX: try http://www.100fps.com/how_many_frames_can_humans_see.htm
About motion interpolation: the numbers are probably not enough to choose, because motion interpolation can work differently from one TV set to another.
Afaik, motion interpolation also come with some more display lag (it obviously can work only if you have 2 or more frames to interpolate), so I would advise disabling it for fast-paced games.

So I'm thinking of getting the Sony 50" W6 LED KDL-50W656A. Anyone else have one, what are your impressions of it?

As it turns out I'm probably picking this TV up later today. I might be able to post some impressions later this week, but I'm far from an expert and I'm also coming off a ~7 year old Finlux 42", so I'll probably be floored either way.

Looking to put my 7 year old 1080i/720p Samsung LCD out to pasture. Hear a lot of good stuff about Panasonic plasmas here on GAF so I've been looking around online at a few sites and reviews. Initial budget was around £800 but I could be stretched a little further if I was getting a particularly good deal. I'm after either 42" or 50" - would be happy with 42" if it offered much better features or quality at a similar price. Totally clueless in this market though so hoping some of GAF's TV experts can help me out with an expensive decision!

Currently tempted by this model: TX-P50VT50B - £899.95 @ Richer Sounds

But also found this lower model - TX-P50ST50B - around £840 via Amazon reseller

Any thoughts on these 2 models? The VT50 seems like a good deal for what appears to be an 18 month old high end model. Also appears to be around £200 cheaper than any other sites with the same TV. Any other good sites price wise in the UK or any other suggestions on a TV within my requirements and budget?

Edit: How do the Panasonic model numbers work? Is it ST < GT < VT? Then the number that follows indicates how recent the model is?

I ask because I've been looking round and a lot of reviews seem to say that the VT50 isn't much better than the ST/GT in terms of picture quality and features? What's the difference with the VT model? Just a nicer case and build quality?

You are correct, it is ST < GT < VT for the 50 series. (This year's 60 series adds ZT above the VT.)

VT provides more in depth controls for picture calibration, THX certification, and just overall better picture. VT might also have more HDMI inputs, but I'm not positive on that, off the top of my head. The ST is generally considered one of the best "bang for the buck" tv's, as it provides a great picture at substantially lower price than the top of the line....when they are first released. As you point out, these are 18 month old tv's, so the prices have dropped considerably.

If you can get a VT50 for a bit more than an ST, I'd say go for that, if you are able to swing the budget.

What about ET60? Would it be a good TV for PS4 - mainly interested in input lag, but also what is it lacking that the more expensive models have?

Dreams shattered :( Called Richer Sounds and they have none of those £800 VT50's left. He suggested I could get the GT60 but the price was £1200 which is an increase of £400 over my original budget

Have found the GT60 elsewhere for about £1080 and I think Richer Sounds would beat that price but it's still well over what I intended to spend :/

Anyone got any good suggestions for a Panasonic plasma under £1000?

Edit: Looks like the P50ST60B is a little more in my price range. Only negative thing is that the input lag looks pretty terrible? Any input on this model would be appreciated too

Honestly, I'm not as up on Panasonic's LED models as their plasmas, so I'm not sure where the ET fits in the line. As far as the lag goes, I believe that http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/ has been including lag measurements in their reviews, so you could always check if that one has been reviewed yet.

The ST does have the highest lag out of the 60 series plasmas, but how objectionable it is would depend on your sensitivity. Don't have one myself, so I can't say. I saw earlier in the thread that BruceLeeRoy mentioned he had ordered one, so you could always wait a bit to see his impressions.

No, that isn't what I was saying.
I meant TVs that have a true 120 or 240 hz refresh rate exist that accept a max of 60hz input. Basically, the status quo.

I've no idea about 240hz panels that accept 240hz signals.
Like you said, it's likely non-commercial.

Geek Squad just authorized an exchange for my beloved VT60. The poor girl had unimaginable levels of image retention. I've been gaming on my KURO for almost five years and I've never had retention that persisted through fifteen minutes of watching some mixed content. I've hit this TV with every screen wipe and pixel orbiter I could find and the persistent images are not fading.

I'm about to have $2,400 of store credit and, although I am loathe to take a step back in picture quality, I'm looking really closely at the Sony W900A. The black levels obviously aren't as good as a plasma, but assuming I'm soured on the plasma technology at the moment, is this the best I can do for that kind of money?

I played Runner 2 for two hours a few weeks ago. (http://i.imgur.com/ua7RFSH.jpg)

How many rupees do I have? (http://i.imgur.com/EiZA8Jn.jpg)

Can somebody recommend me a set or 3 that are great for (1) gaming, (2) blu ray movies and (3) some sports. My budget is $1,100 max. I would love 4 hdmi ports. Any help or links would be awesome... Thanks!!!

glad to read you are going plasma.
its a decision you will not regret.

i regret it. i cannot stand the IR on my 3-year old panasonic plasma and the amount of noise in the image. it's only gotten worse with age not better. definitely eyeballing the W900 as a potential upgrade.

Went to pick up my 50" ST60 tonight...and it wouldn't fit in my car :(

Gonna see about borrowing my friend's truck tomorrow or something. FML

Would not recommend the S60 after playing with it for a while. It has weird visual problems that I guess is "normal" for plasma, and the buzzing sound it makes is very distracting.

Actually, I would recommend it if all you do is watch movies and you do so about 10 feet away or more, so you can't be bothered by the buzzing and won't notice the dithering. But just be sure to turn the TV off whenever you're away and baby it with slideshows to avoid burn-in (which I've had even with an image on for like 30 seconds, no joke, but it wasn't permanent).

I also notice compared to my old LED it looks blurrier. Maybe it's a more accurate image, but since it's not as sharp it's not as good on my eyes. I guess I'm not concerned about accurate, just impressive colorful images. The whites on this plasma look dim and dirty, which kinda negates how good the blacks are.

Lots of people seem to be getting ST60s in the past week or so, myself included. I'm almost done breaking in my panel with the slides and the picture quality is incredible. I have zero image retention, no buzzing sounds, and no perceivable lag hampering my game playing experience.

As I stated earlier, I don't really play anything online, so any reported lag issues with the ST60 might be an issue there. However, I've been playing a ton of Resident Evil 4, Super Stardust, and Rock Band Blitz and it is a non-issue.

Finished up my 100 hours of slides around 1:00 am this morning and have now set up my P50S60 in my living room with ca liberation settings from AVS forums. Holy crap, this set is gorgeous.

My wife & I are watching MNF right now, but I can't can't wait to fire up Wind Waker HD once she goes to bed. I also need too boot up Wipeout HD. Anyone know of any other true 1080p PS3 games?

I'm getting the ST60 in a few weeks. The lag thing does not bother me. Can't be worse than the 7 year old LCD it's replacing.

How easy was the exchange at Best Buy, did you buy a warranty beforehand?

Hey TVGaf! I had a question as someone just jumping back into the TV buying space after a couple years.

I've been looking to upgrade my family room TV, a 4 year old 42" Insignia that was my first HD TV but painfully average. Based on the arrangement of the room, viewing distance is somewhat close, so I would not feel comfortable going beyond a 55" set. Preferably, I think a 46" of 50" would be the best fit TBH.

I have a friend who works for Sony and I can get the family store discounts on TV prices. Right now, I was looking into the KDL-50R550a set which w/ discount is priced at $675. I also noticed it gets 6 months free Netflix/Hulu, so as a current Netflix subscriber that'd save be an additional $48 (every bit counts!).

Now, I am mostly looking for a good picture set - Smart TV, 3D, web, etc. are low priority to me since I can get most of those features through my PS3. I'm also not interested in the top-tier sets that would set me back >$1k. Does GAF know of/recommend another TV that is 46"-50" for that price with a presumably better picture quality, or is the 550a worth biting?

Not sure if I should hold out for Black Friday deals, but this one is very tempting for a mid-tier Sony.

Canon, what mode do you have the TV in? If it's in Vivid or Dynamic or something along those lines, it will make the image retention far worse. You should put it in Movie or Cinema mode. But since you also mention that you are concerned more with impressive colourful images than accurate ones, you might not like Movie or Cinema mode, but just wanted to point out that high contrast modes like Vivid or Dynamic although brighter will be worse for IR.

I'll never order anything from the Sony website again

never met a worst costumer service than that one, fuck it

After 3 weeks waiting to get my fucking tv i receive a call from this sony dude ( wich sounded pissed off too) that my order went back to Holland because i wasn't at home

Kinda curious because

-the website didn't show a tracking number or an expected delivery day
-my house is never empty
-no phone calls, anything (after i also decided to pay more to get a delivery with the ability to choose time and day)
-mail box empty, no delivery advices

then i ask wtf is he saying and start babbling shit and leave me on hold for a good 5 minutes, he answer back and says that there has been some problem with the courier handling my order and that he will fix it on the same day, and that i obviously shouldn't worry about receiving my order by next week

An hour ago i receive this email wich says that my order has been cancelled

I'm practically at the point of killing someone and decide to call back the dude from before

After another 15 minutes of trying to explain what is happening to a new sony guy, he then, all of a sudden, comes out with the fact that i'll be getting my money back because Sony can't send my package twice (i'm already at a loss for words)

Now i'm trying to calm down and waiting for something to happen

Never, again

How easy was the exchange at Best Buy, did you buy a warranty beforehand?

BestBuy just delivered my w900 over the weekend. Exchanged my w802 after not being satisfied with it after a month. There was no hassle at all over doing the exchange (maybe the fact that I was paying an extra $900 to upgrade from the 47" w802 had something to do with it?) and they even picked up my old TV and setup the new one for free. If you are an Elite or Elite plus rewards member your return window is extended to 30 and 45 days, respectively.

I'm really impressed with the w900 so far. I know comparing sets in the store doesn't mean much, but I spent alot of time looking at the w900, ST60 and VT60. I may get crucified for this, but the w900 looked more impressive than the ST60 to me. Of course, there is also a $1,000 price difference between the sets. The picture quality of the VT60 was in a class of its own though. I took a hard look at the VT, but in the end the potential nuisances of plasma pushed me towards the Sony.

I will post a more in depth review after I have used it for more than just a few days, but as of now I am happy with it and finally ready for next gen!

I'll add one more point to the negative list about S60 (not sure how much it applies to ST60 and up), and that's brightness in darker areas of the picture when another part of it is bright, like the sky. I guess you'd call this ANSI contrast? It's fairly bothersome when the dark portion of the screen becomes noticeably darker in order to compensate for the bright portion. Naturally this happens a lot in GTA, when you spend a ton of time traveling around the city with half the frame being filled with the bright sky.

For reference, my old 5080 also exhibited this behavior (well, all plasmas will) but not even close to the extent of what I've seen in the S60.

Oh god...I'm loving this thing already. I'm just streaming Netflix right now, but this is such a step up from my old TV.

It sucks that I have to break in the TV...so I guess no GTA or Windwaker for a few days :(

Sounds like ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter):

The brighter the scene, the lower the contrast gets. It was my biggest problem with the VT60.
