Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Hey guys, definitely need some help/suggestions.

Our 73" Mitsubishi DLP just went out, we've had it for about four years and it's now been having miscellaneous issues. We figured we'd just upgrade to something newer rather than dumping a couple hundred dollars into this.

We're primarily interested in something 60" and up, don't necessarily care about the SmartTV or 3D functions, we just want a clear, crisp picture for ideally under $2000.

I just came across this: Vizio 70" LED which appears to have good reviews.

I also see a lot of talk about Plasma's in here, but I was always under the impression they weren't good TV's for gaming?

For anyone buying a TV, do you grab the extended warranty offered? I know these are seen as a way to just get more money from customers but if your 90lb (60") TV does break, how does the 1 year warranty work. Do they cover the cost of a local person or do you have to pay the cost to ship a 90lb TV?

I'm wondering b/c I'm thinking of getting one of the Panasonics and I'm curious how it will work with them getting out of the business.

Anyone on this? Don't want this lost on the prior page :(

Why? Even on a Sony set, you have to turn off all those features to bring down the input lag.

Plasmas generally have more input lag.

What Samsung model and size where you getting?
Was planning on 55inch series 7 samsung, but im hearing they have worse input lag and that though the colours are vibrant, they "look fake" whatever that means

Anyone else jumped on the black friday deal for the Sony KDL 70R550A for 1500$ from frys?
I got one, The input lag is quoted to be 19ms in game mode, which it feels very acceptable. Tried PS4/PC on it, works great, the image is good and I do not notice clouding or uniformity issue on my unit, the light bleeding is not really noticeable either for a edge lit.

I picked up that TV this weekend. I'm gaming on it just fine. It has 39ms of input lag, which is not bad. Make sure to turn on Game Mode on too.

Wrong! Plasmas have less input lag 99% of the time.
Ah, I stand corrected. My bad.

So, I think I'm going with the Panasonic 50' Plasma TC-P50S60.

Is this a good choice for PS4?

Exact TV I have with my PS4. It's stunning. Just make sure you can control light in the room you place it in. It doesn't perform well in bright rooms. Otherwise, gorgeous black levels, colour representation and overall screen performance. Super price/performance set, and going out of production so it won't be around much longer. I look forward to firing up the PS4 every time, knowing that my TV isn't a bottleneck to the image I'm viewing, it works to enhance it instead.

I've been watching this thread for quite awhile and you all are selling me more and more on this TV. Only issue is I already have two working units and only a small apartment. The one I currently game on is a pretty poor Vizio (42" passive 3D) and the other a better 32in LED. Having this would make me much happier to go along with my Onkyo home theater, but:
1) I'd lose 3D unless I kept my 42" somewhere
2) I have two freaking tvs already.

My dad wants to get a new tv. He mostly watches hockey.

Must be: 46 inch
1080p
no 3d
possibly smart tv
No more than 800 dollars on amazon.
120 hz better for hockey?

Whats the best he could get for that price? Also I will use the tv for ps4 gaming from time to time.

Oh also he really likes the 40 inch LG he bought like 4 years ago or so. He seems to want another LG

And... SOLD! Getting it this week. Thanks!

Picked up the 65" Samsung at the BB bf deal. Replacing a 61" Samsung dlp which ill miss. Very nice set, not many frills like smart TV but who gives a shit. Still fine tuning the settings but for 999 this was a great deal.

For comparison sake, do u or anyone else know how much input lag the 2009 32inch panasonic vieras are as thats what ive been gaming on for the passed few years and dont really notice any lag

This is why I was asking about the Panasonic warranty. Has anyone dealt with their warranty. I really don't want to get an extended :

When I called them over a buzzing issue on my ST30 they sent a local shop to repair it. I didn't have any problem with them honoring the warranty. However if your set ever fails and needs to be replaced you may have a problem, obviously since they won't be making them any more.

Perhaps I'm a plasma sinner but I didn't do any sort of break in on my set. Just used the tv as well a tv for a couple weeks and then popped in a manual setting I found in the internet.

Things to consider for anyone still on the fence -

1080p plasmas need to be fairly sizable because of the minimum pixel size , viewing distance is a huge consideration for this because the extra colors you get versus an LCD are achieved through dithering, dithering disappears if you sit an appropriate distance away from the TV , even 5.5 feet from my 55 inch is good enough.

I haven't measured input lag but it feels better than my previous TV so that's about all I care about.

The biggest concern anyone seems to have is about image retention and burn in which are 2 different things. The last few years burn in only shows up if you leave an image stuck on the tv for 12+ hours , the screens CAN still get it but that's an awful extreme scenario. I know I do NOT have any burn in after a full year of use.

Image retention on my set occurs within the first few minutes of powering it on and is usually gone another few minutes later. For example, loading up a bluray player the menu may stick on solid colors for a couple minutes and then go away. It effects areas of high contrast , so a white box with a black background might stick around for a minute or 2 but a grey box with a black background might only last a few seconds. As soon as the TV is displaying something with plenty of motion you won't even notice it at all.

Oddly, I really haven't experienced any complications with gaming though.

The TV I own that I base all this on is the panasonic ST50 55.

you should've broken it in but doesn't seem like you have much of an issue. there will always be image retention on plasmas. but if you don't notice it during a movie or game, it's not a big deal.

Something else to consider as well. Make sure you have a strong mount that can handle the weight if you go with a panasonic. Theyre considerably heavier than most other panels.

Is going from a 54.6" to a 50" screen a big difference? Before I had to move the TV back because I was sitting a bit too close. So I can move closer.

Furthest I can sit is 8 feet, closest is like 6 feet.

Except this year, Panasonic has terrible lag compared to most of the LEDs.
This is one of the main reasons I'm holding off of a Panasonic. If only they didn't get out of the plasma business & next year they could have released less laggier sets.

I don't think I can keep this UN55FH6003F.
No outputs, and I am not happy with the picture at all.

What don't you like about it? Did you get it calibrated?

How is the VT60 laggy?

The ST60 is the only Panasonic plasma with high input lag. The other models are around ~25ms or something like that.

Why are you guys waiting to enter the d-nice settings? I mean if you're not doing manual calibration what does it matter if you do it now or later?

I hope this doesn't sound mean but you're sure you're in optical out and not optical in?

Might have high contrast on it. Break in asks for low settings all around to be used.

Aren't the calibration settings great for that? They provide more natural and muted colours right?

Anybody else with a kdl47w802a have any settings they wouldn't mind posting? I'm trying to get the most out of the tv, and it looks great now, but I don't want to be missing something.

Audio Out. I don't even see an Optical Audio in on the back of the set.

Audio plays through the Solo just fine, but I have to mute the TV everytime I turn it on. On my ST30 there was a simple menu feature to disable the speakers, can't find it on the VT60 but the menu is a lot different.

Pretty much down to the following three models:

VT60
ZT60
W900A

I'm a little afraid of the plasmas due to all the extra care that goes into optimizing their use, but on the other hand I don't have any reason to believe I can't properly take care of and calibrate a TV.

Haven't been able to find out what the display lag is like on my previous TV from 2007 (a Sharp Aquos 42D64U) so I'm having trouble knowing how noticeable a TV with good display lag numbers (the W900A) would be versus one of the laggier plasma displays compared to the Aquos I've done the bulk of my console gaming on for the past six years. Anyone have that information or know where I can find it?

I primarily want the TV for gaming, but I don't play at any sort of competitive level where display lag is my priority. I'm looking for a picture quality that impresses on a 55-65 inch display, without having to sacrifice enjoyment due to display lag.

Hmm weird, it shouldn't play from both places, but now that I think about it I never set up my Panasonic to have audio out as I don't really watch TV. My dads TV has audio out to a sound bar and it works fine and has no issues w/ the TV...

I know it says ST60 but it was linked to the VT from someone else.

I have played with all these settings and it just has too much banding, flickering during AC4, and I can see the brightness change when things are going on in the picture. That's with everything turned off in game mode too.

I like the size, and when it looks good it looks great. But it can also look quite bad. Almost like the look of my Sony 46 over this Samsung 55. Have to check out Target's return policy while looking for another deal.

I am sure there's something I'm missing, but I don't know why that option isn't there in the menu. Seems like a simple thing to do, turn speakers on / off. Oh well.
