Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

No that is correct.
So then I should have rgb set to limited on my ps3 and W900a if I only watch movies on it right?

Also my first question from my earlier post was wrong, I meant to say BD/DVD - Video Output Format: Auto, RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr . I assume since I turned on Y Pb/Cb in the other setting that is what I should set it to here as well, would that be correct?

I set up my W900A last week coming from a 5-year old Panasonic plasma, and I was floored by how much deeper the blacks are on this LED set. I'm not sure if that speaks more to how crappy that Panasonic was with its rising blacks, or how good this Sony model is, but whatever the reason it's pretty great.

The past few days I've been tweaking the settings, and most the time I think the set looks too contrast-y, or the blacks looked crushed, but WoW tells me otherwise and I think it's just I'm not used to seeing blacks so dark.

I do see the issues with uniformity and clouding though - although it's not terrible. Honestly, between that and the mild IR from the plasma, I call it wash. Pick your poison.

The lack of buzzing was strange at first. When the first bright/white screen came onto the Sony, I could have sworn I heard a phantom buzzing lol. Like how an amputee can still feel their limb. As odd as it seemed to me at first, it sure is nice having a completely silent set.

I think the WoW disc is about as easy as it gets. Try again. Do the basic setup steps and listen to the Instructions before doing so. Use the bar tests to set black and white levels - that's probably the most important.

As far as W900A specific settings go, I would recommend turning off the Light Sensor under the ECO options. It made a noticeable difference for me. If you don't, the set will automatically adjust levels depending on your rooms lighting conditions - in theory.

Good info. I probably just need to make some more adjustments but will wait until I have a WoW disc. And yeah, the non buzzing on white screens is one of the chief reasons I switched to the 900a.

Even if that's the case, beggars can't be choosers when it comes to Plasma these days.

I'm waiting for LG to announce they're quitting plasmas too. Now that Samsung seem like they're going to be out within a year or two, LG has no reason to stay in. Everything LG does is to compete with Samsung and once Samsung has quit a market, LG has no Raison d'être to continue in that market.

maybe. But also they could hold the title of "the only Plasmas out there!" and that could compete with Samsung.

However, because 4K doesn't work for Plasma, I think that's the death knell.

Agreed. LG may hold on a year or two more, but OLED is clearly the future.

I don't think anyone wants to refute that. But fact is that until we reach the point of OLED being cheaper and better, which might still take some time, there is not really a good alternative for the good plasma televisions.

It is going to be a lot longer than most in here will want to admit 3+ years. Missed out on the last Panasonic plasma's. Just hope my 55GT30 can last till that happens.

I hate to bump this again but I didn't really get a clear answer last time, since it seemed to me like the two posters who answered my questions contradicted each other.

I only use my PS3 for BR movies, and according to Lima above they don't use the Full RGB range. I read that they actually use Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr. I would like to know if these two statements are correct, if so I think I would use the settings bolded below.

1. BD/DVD - Video Output Format: Auto, RGB or Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr
2. RGB Full Range (HDMI): Full or limited
3. You Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI): On or off

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Those settings are correct. You're good to go.

So is there any word on when Vizios' 4k 50" display comes out? I am retiring my 65" Mitsubishi DLP and I want to buy soon. My budget is right at $1000 and it sounds perfect. FALD + 4K and the size I'm budgeted for.

The new E series Vizio 55" is tempting me to pull the trigger right now at $700.

The girlfriend says 3D would be fun and the 2013 Vizio M series is at $800 with 240hz but its edge lit.

Plasmas at $1000 are pretty lackluster. What do I do?

What plasma's specifically around $1000 do you think are pretty lackluster and why? Panasonic's lowest end 1080p models (U and S) delivered near reference quality (calibrated) the last couple years and Samsung's F5300/5500 were quite good last year as well.

i got the 2013 Vizio M series 50 inch and it's not a bad tv at all. can't beat the price either. yeah it's edge lite, but it's pretty good for the price and all that's included

F5300 is all that's still avail. in that range as far as I can tell that's reasonably good. It seems like the ST60s are all but gone and have bad input lag.

F8500 is nice but not the price.

word. I have the ST30 (42") and it looks great. Got it onsale for like $800

What's the best looking 55 inch coming out this year? Since I haven't been in the market in years I didn't follow TV's at CES.

I'd wait for the proper reviews on HDTVTest and AVForums. Expo previews of TVs are always pointless and never have any bearing on the actual performance of the TV.

How bad is bad? I heard there was a recent firmware update but can't find any info if it helps with input lag.

I bought a un50f6300 last week. Pretty satisfied with the TV. I don't know if it sucks, it's good or bad or decent, but it's good enough for me.

One problem tho : I cannot find a PS4 to go with it. :P

To anyone out there with a Samsung PN60F8500AF, would you be so kind as to inform me how badly the lag can affect your enjoyment of certain games?

It's pretty much the best plasma screen for image quality but I want to know about the lag issue.

New 2014 Samsung models are starting to pop up with a release date of April 6th.

From Amazon:

Curved 4K 9000 Series 55": $3,999, 65": $4,999

Flat 4K 8550 Series 55": $2,999, 65": $3,999

Curved 1080p 8000 Series 55": $2,499, 65": $3,299

Review of the curved 4K UK model
Naturally the prospect of gaming on the UE65HU8500 mouthwatering – especially given the immersive qualities of its curved screen. So it’s slightly disappointing to find that input lag – even when using the TV’s Game mode – comes in at around 62ms on average. That’s around twice as high as we’d really like to see.

Disappointing. I wonder how much the lag is caused by using the outboard One Connect Box for inputs and processing.

So, finally surpassed the 500-hour mark on my VT60 and this set just continues to amaze me. From games to movies, this set just puts out some of the best color contrast and blacks i've seen on any set. It saddens me to no end that plasma is on its way out and OLED is still far from ready for the masses.

I'm curious to see what these smaller curved screens will be like. I'm planning to run a curved projection screen. That being said, I'm planning for a 120"-130" 2.35:1 screen for my space.

Not talking about 2.35, I get that curved screens would give the viewer greater immersion of the content. I'd guess you'd have to sit a bit closer then you would to increase the effect.

I have this tv in a 51"

if you put it on pc mode the lag is much less reduced. Definitely noticable when not on PC mode, but i game just fine with it on pc mode.

Does anyone have a link for some calibration settings for a kdl55w802a? I bought it September but never did anything other than set it to game mode. Also, for apps like Netflix and Hulu on a smart tv, does it use whatever setting you have on at that time when running or do they have their own, like, input?

Well, seeing as hardly any of the Vizio '14 models have hit the shelves yet, and I needed SOMETHING to get me by since my Mitsubishi 65C9 DLP bit the dust, I randomly picked up a Panasonic P50X60 which is a 720p Plasma.

When you get about 7ft away from it, you can't really see the 720p'ness of it when watching most content and gaming (Resogun looked fantastic with the black levels afforded by plasma). PS3 games are of course amazing considering that most of them are 720p.

Calibrated pretty well, and input lag is so much improved from the DLP, low-30ms so it feels very much like my computers IPS displays.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't think I'll end up settling on this TV, but it was dirt cheap and has a 45-day no-questions-asked return policy. I'm going to see if maybe holding out is a viable option until something truely wow's me, but damn if it wasn't a bargain at $420 out the door at Best Buy.

$420 50" display that has deeper blacks than pretty much any LCD sub-$1000 in similar size ... not too shabby.

Why is Panasonic and Samsung getting out of the Plasma game? *sigh*

Still have my heart set / holding out hope on the 2014 Vizio M-series 50" 1080p or P-series 50" 4k getting out on store shelves soon. FALD should offer at least reasonably better black levels while still blasting super bright images for daytime use.

It's impossible to make a plasma TV with 4k resolution that is within the allowed power use for the size (due to government regulations).

yup its sad that a gimmick is whats killing them. 4k wont be useful for another 5+ years.

tv manufacturers are stupid. what theyre doing with OLED is equally stupid. to get prices down they need people to buy the tvs and simplify manufacturing but they add curves and expensive picture frame garbage and other junk to jack up the price. so dumb.

Holy crap, Samsung has not only improved their lousy response time over the year, but have been getting gradually worse!

that's actually one of the better tvs. I believe they have some over 100ms. pretty soon all games are going to have to have calibration settings to work around the delay caused by the tv.

Since 4K is going to be norm pretty soon... i think I'll hold off from upgrading until they come down to about 2k for a 4k set.

I am really itching to upgrade however from my 5 year old now 720 Panny plasma which has given such great service.

I am looking specifically for a ~$400 set for gaming. The bigger the better but also worried about input lag. What models should I look at?

I heard that the PC mode might limit your image calibration options, is that true? Do you know if that pertains only to user-accessible settings or if an ISF calibration would be similarly gimped?
