I play games with my calibrated settings for Cinema...
That's poor. Any settings available within the UI?
I'm getting perfect results on my PS4 via my plasma. Same with my Galaxy S5 set to cinema. Need to test my other devices around the house again too at some point, but from recollection my PC and Macbook had perfect results too, but only after calibrating both to get them that way. Initially both had a touch of black crush by default.

This tv can be quite accurate out of the box. I'd recommend just following these instructions and saving yourself that money.

Those settings are for the 800b, but I'd bet they work perfectly on the 700. They're nearly identical TVs.
I did that too on my Plasma. But that input lag.
Cool, I'll try that out. I get a good price on ISF calibration, only costs me a few dollars to get it calibrated.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Did a bit of homework, ended up going with the W800b. Went with East Coast TVs again, here's hoping the previous time was a one time thing.

TV Mounting troubles are over. It appears my entire apartment uses concrete, even the interior walls...so I just paid a handyman to do the job for me instead. Not exactly cheap, but he did an excellent job. My 790B now effortlessly floats over my son's wasteland of toys.

Yikes, it happened again. I don't know is East Coast TV's just don't want to ship to the west coast or they really have a hard time keeping those Sony TV's in stock. Went with Amazon in the end. A bit more expensive, but they're hopefully more reliable. Just wanted to let you guys know incase any one else on the west coast wanted to buy a sony tv from east coast tvs.

Got my 50w800b and like it. Thanks to BruiserBear for helping me decide and answering a lot of my questions.
Has some uniformity issues with both white and black screens but nothing bad enough to send it back. Did have to put the black correction setting to max to make some of the bleed not super noticeable though, and don't like that. The settings on rtings.com didn't really work for me, Warm2 gives greys a really green look and had to set the gamma to the lowest setting to get 2.2 from it. Still pretty happy with my purchase. Guess the only major downside is how slow and bad the smart tv features are. Samsung really has Sony beat hard with that stuff, especially with their special controller.

My gaming rig was upgraded last month with the 65 Samsung HU9000 4k curved tv. With an oppo 93 and all next gen systems it's pretty rocking. Also have Aperion audio for all my speakers.
Is it weird playing a side scrolling platformer on a curved screen?

I haven't tried a side scroller but the curve hasn't thrown me off for anything else. It's been a great tv so far and really looks fantastic. Nothing has looked weird though. If you are looking to buy go and look at best buy and see if it messes with you.

I don't plan on getting a next-gen console, as I'm a PC gamer.
But I'm thinking about buying a Xbox360, because I'd like to play Fifa Street, which is console only.
Maybe GTA 5, Viva Pinata and a racing game like NFS too, but I could get all that for my PC too and use a gamepad.
However, I'm not sure about how the graphics would look like on my old TV:
Would the image quality suffer a lot thanks to this 8 year old beauty, compared to a new LCD?

So...this just occurred to me..
How to deal with a non 1.4 AVR (SR6004 Marantz) ?
Send consoles etc to TV directly and then audio to AVR through optical ?
Marantz doesn't have 1.4 thus no arc either..
You only need 1.4 to play games in 3D or watch Blu-ray 3D.
1.3 and below are fine otherwise.

Yeah, I know.
Not that ill ever care too much for 3d (are they even bothering making 3d games anymore ? Havent heard of current gen ones yet) but having a 3d TV and not being able to use it pisses me off.
What's the consensus on this 60" plasma samsung? Only $730 at Best Buy

Considering LG's words have been "educating the consumer" and not "rapidly reducing production cost" I'm expecting many years yet.
Seems like Sony is going to move most (if not all) of their smart TVs to Android TV platform next year, and they will support Chrome Cast as well. Which is great IMHO, it will allow app makers to offer one app for everyone not to mention how useful Chrome Cast is.

Samsung H6400 or Sony W800B?
Looking for a 50 inch. The back of the Sony is apparently odd and I truly loved old Samsung (left it at home when I moved for my job).
Gaming isn't a huge concern as I never really play online - and def not competitively. Have not been able to see either in person as none of the box stores around here seem to carry either of these tv's anymore/now.

On Samsung plasmas - can you still adjust contrast/brightness/sharpness settings and so forth when you have it set to "PC" to reduce input lag?
Yeah luckily it is my bedroom TV. It has nothing on my Panasonic plasma.

Great news for Canadians - vizio is finally selling to us. They made an excluzive deal with futureshop. I just bought an E series there, and it was only fifty bucks more in CAD than the americans pay in USD. David Katzmeir thought it was the best screen in the price range by far.
edit - It's an LCD with local dimming LEDs. 649 CAD for the 50 inch.

Something to consider is that the 50w800b is cheaper on amazon then the 50w700b from best buy. Sorry I can't help you with your other choice. I was making the same one a week ago and went with the Sony, but its more for gaming.
I could buy from Amazon as well or possibly get Best Buy to match the 800b price. I would rather have the black bezel anyways.
What is the back of the tv like? I heard it was shaped very weird.
How big of a difference is 25 and 42 ms input lag?

Models past the 800b have a weird wedge shape, but the 790/800b just have a very thin bezel with a thicker back only at the bottom where the inputs are. Some issues if you want to wall mount but perfectly fine otherwise.
Just gotta use the wall mount adapters on the 700b. The wedge design mounts a lot more cleanly if you use a tilt wall mount, for sure.
700B is pretty cool, same TV as the 800b but uses less power and is lighter
700B is so darn thin in the back and bezel it feels slightly flimsy compared to the wedge design bravias or the black bravias. It's a +/- in my eyes.

Anyone have any input regarding Sony's 2014 4k lineup, the X8500B?
I am really torn right now, I am thinking of getting the 55" or 65" X8500B but I am having trouble deciding. I prefer this over Samsung's curved UHD, but the Samsung is cheaper.
Does anyone know if the X8500B series is good for gaming and movies? Thanks a lot in advance.

Best Buy will price match amazon? Thought most of those stores make sure to say no online only stuff.
The 800b shape is odd in that like after midway up the back, where the inputs end, it is just screen. Like literally under an inch thick. I can't even support my tower of sensors (wii, wiiu, and ps4 thing) on the top because the ps4 thing has nothing really to brace itself to.
As for input lag, if you have never noticed it before, you aren't going to notice it now. Like if you have been playing on any standard tv not with all the image processing stuff turned off for years you have probably been dealing with over 100ms. The tvs you are looking at now are the same and you have to make sure to change settings to game mode to get the lower numbers. To go into detail though, if what you are playing is running at 60fps then 25ms is between 1 and 2 frames of input lag. 42ms is between 2 and 3 frames. It can be noticeable to people who play a lot of precision based games on crts and what not, but not really to average gamers.
The reason I went wit hthe 800b over the H6400 is because of recommendations from here. The H6400 defiantly has better smart tv features and remote if that is something that interests you. I had no real intention of ever really using either of those so it wasn't as big a deal to me.

My other concern with the W800B was just that all of the non-HDMI ports are back mounted. It's a ridiculously slim TV (basically a large version of those super-slim LG Computer LCDs) but if you wall mount, all of the TOSLINK/Component/Composite ports are inaccessible without either (a) right-angle adapters or (b) an articulating wall mount, which is the only type that can swing out enough to give those ports room.
The HDMI and USB ports are all side or bottom mounted and thus easy to access from a typical mount.
Looks nice. 4K input lag is a bit high but for the average person not bad. Looks twice as thick as the W800B but not awful, and I don't think it uses the wedge, so that's good.
I really don't feel like this is the year for 4K though. Panels are improving, smart features are improving...just feels like the spec is still too raw.

Be aware of 3rd party sellers on Amazon though, as it has to be SOLD by Amazon to qualify for price matching.
I'm sure I'll get yelled at for being too lazy to search the thread, but I'm looking to move up from my Samsung LN26A450C1D. This would be for the bedroom, so I'm looking at 32"-42". Don't need any "smart" functionality, and would like 3+ HDMI inputs. I'd love to stay under $500, if possible.
So I received my Sony Bravia (w700b) from Best Buy yesterday and I'm loving it so far even though I used a Plasma for so long. My only problem so far is that turning off the tv also turns off my PS4, which I don't want (since I like to pause games before I leave to run errands etc) . Is there some setting I am missing that controls this?

It's an option called "Anynet". It shuts off all "Anynet" accessories connected to the tv when you shut it off.
Go to the settings and turn it off and you're all set.

Get a BR movie disk, play it on your ps4, pause the content at a section which shows many different colors; set the colors, contrast and sharpness as it fits to you, then pause it at a dark section and set brightness, tint and back-lighting.
You don't have to go to extremes to set color for a tv, most people only see difference in the first couple of minutes or when you switch between programming.
Don't forget to turn you "game mode" on when you play online games. It really helps on lag.
