Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

Saw the JS9500 today and I wish I had the money to buy a TV like that. Incredible picture and great input lag for games. 2016 JS9600 is gonna be insane. HDR, HDMI 2.0a

It still sucks that my Best Buy doesn't ever have an OLED TV. As an OLED fanboy I have yet to see one in person :(

Yeah the JS9500 is amazing in person. Seeing it convinced me that curved was pretty cool.

theres not nearly enough discussion about input lag in this thread

I used to talk about it some. I do not have popular opinions on it! It upset some people.

I think that there can be far too much emphasis on it on GAF and that for most people playing most games (console especially) on a TV it's not that important and most people won't notice it unless it's a really brokenly high number. It got a bit heated here with the last line of Panasonic Plasmas.

My 60" Panasonic ST60, with all the junk turned off, doesn't have any that is noticeable to me or any of my friends or people that I've had play on it. Supposedly it's at 75ms with the Leo Bodnar tester, but http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/ claims that it does not work right on Panasonic's Plasmas at all and it's likely nearer the 47ms number they got with other test types. It certainly does not feel like it's that high to anyone and the 45-50ms range is perfectly fine for the vast majority of games these days.

I personally can't tell the difference between it and my NEC 20WMGX2 which is much, much lower. Nor can anyone that I personally know who has came over to my place and used all of my gear. If I was seriously into Fighting Games where every single frame matters I would not use it, but it works perfectly for just about everything else I've tried on it. Console Shooters (Destiny), Platforms (Shovel Night is gorgeous on it), Action RPGs, Racing, Character Action games (DMC, Bayonetta 2), etc.

If you think I'm nuts and wrong I will gladly let people come over to use my TV and show me I'm totally mistaken, and then you can see how absolutely gorgeous The Witcher 3 is on my Plasma.

If you think I'm nuts and wrong
Anyone is allowed to have an opinion on the matter... There's no "wrong".

I personally think that it's the most annoying thing on a TV set... I could accept bad contrast, bleeding, even SD and 30fps but not a 40ms lag. It probably has to do with some of the games I play... When I bought my TV set, I was playing video golf on both TV and PSP, and before I found the "game mode" on my TV, the 30ms lag was just feeling awfully wrong. I though I had made a bad purchase (I bought a revised edition without the lag information, which was available only for the previous model).

That's the reason lag is my first filter when looking for a new TV, and unfortunately recent sets have often very high lag (40-50+). For this reason, I think the data should be as available in feature sheets as contrast ratio, resolution, etc.

I'm perfectly fine with people saying they don't care, though. I think it's quite close to the 30/60 fps discussion.

It could depend on the TV type too. hdtvtest also noted that higher rated Plasmas felt just as smooth as lower rated LCDs when they were testing the leo bodnar Plasma inaccuracies out.

Why would you choose to replace your 9G Pioneer Kuro -- an emissive display technology capable of some of the best picture quality, contrast ratio and black level in existence -- with an LCD?
Good question.

To be fair, I haven't followed the new models coming out for the last three years, and I guess I thought that the new LCD sets were better than they actually are. Even though I love my Kuro, and I've loved it since the day I bought it brand new three years ago (!), it isn't perfect. The blacks have risen a little since I got it, and it has a very noticable plasma buzz. Other than that, it's pretty much perfect, and that's why I'm keeping it and returning the Sony W805B next week. I guess I just thought the Sony was better than it is.

theres not nearly enough discussion about input lag in this thread

The Vizio 65" P-Series I just got has .18ms of lag. Lowest of any modern TV I've seen. I can't believe how much better games feel compared to my Panny ST50. The blacks are also plasma deep with local dimming on. Incredible set, with the only negative being vertical DSE.

I'm in the market for a new TV and I've narrowed it down to two:

Sony KDL50W800B ($700)

Sony KDL48W600B ($575)

I don't care about the 2" size difference and I don't care about 3D. The only other difference between these TVs is one is 60hz and the other is 120hz. Does 120hz matter? Even though the 2" size difference and 3D don't matter to me, is an extra $125 for all those features worth it?

Note: I'll be using this as my PC monitor and my TV.

Thanks in advance!

Man, researching new TVs has me in a state of analysis paralysis.

I enjoy reading about all this stuff but it makes me second guess myself like crazy.

It feels like a horrible time to buy one. There was this amazing sweet spot of price/performance/competition during the last couple generations where Panasonic Plasmas were still in the game.

I don't like the new prices of anything at all. I feel like we're not going to get another sweet spot of releases until OLED tech matures to the point of getting back to the Price/Performance level we had before.

Yeah, I think you may be right. My current TV is a Panasonic plasma so OLED is very interesting to me, but it's tough for me to justify paying the current premium prices.

Why are there no reviews for most budget TV's . I am n market for budget TV and most have them have little to no information about them online

Probably because they are so cheap and disposable and have nothing from a technology standpoint that really stands out. If you are parting with $2000 for a TV you are more inclined to research. If you are willing to research that means more views and ad revenue to make it worthwhile to review.

So what do poor saps like us buy if we want to spend just 500$ for TV (don't live in US)

Don't take it personal, but you don't fit their demographics. I'm all for people reviewing cheaper TV's but unfortunately we will have to rely on in store demos and customer reviews unless there is a hidden gem out there that is so amazing that someone does a thorough review.

Is the 55" OLED LG a good buy for 2k?

It's still a $2,000 1080p television, even though $2k is a good price for it. So yea, it's a decent price for the TV.

However, is it a good buy? Depends.. I would have said yes last year hands down, but the Samsung 4k FALD are a big game changer.
You can get the 55" Samsung 4K JS8500 for $1,999 right now for MSRP, so it will go even lower. That TV is under 1/4th the price of the 4K OLED and comes damn close in black levels because it's FALD. It's also got lower input lag and support for larger color gamut which is coming with 4K bluerays.

What's going to be the use for the TV?
If it's getting hooked up to one of your beastly computers, then I'd advise getting the 4K Samsung.

If it's getting used for bluerays, then I'd still probably advise getting the 4K Samsung. The 1080p OLED will be really nice until 4K blueray players with the larger color gamut start showing up later this year.

Only the JS9500 is FALD. The 9000 and 8500 are edge lit.

VE Shootout is happening this year on 6/24 and 6/25.

Models to be tested:

LG's 65EG9600 OLED
Panasonic's TC-65CX850U
Samsung's UN78JS9500
Sony's XBR-75X940C

I'd expect the OLED to win but I'm interested seeing how the JS9500 and X940C compare to each other.

Man...my TV game is really lacking right now lol. I used to be up to date on this stuff. Never even heard of Samsung FALD until you mentioned it. Now I'll have to take a look. I mentioned the 2k price because an employee at MicroCenter told me yesterday they regularly go on sale at that price from the MSRP of $3,500. When I see the OLED I am captivated by the PQ.

At the same time not sure how I would feel buying a non 4k TV at this time. I go back and forth.

With regards to use...I'll most likely keep the computer hooked to my 4k monitors. There are 4k IPS Gsync panels dropping later this year which I'll probably go with. The TV would be mainly for TV watching and movies.

Very happy with my LG 55EG960V 4K OLED. 3D on this set is superb. It's not perfect but no TV is.

Question: An LG 55EG960V review I read on AVforums said they measured the input lag at a way high 53ms. Since anything above 30ms can be notice-able to some people (depends on each person's eyes really) doesn't that cause seemingly slow reaction-times when gaming with wireless controllers??

So how are the Vizios for gaming? I don't need something cutting edge with super fast response time, just something that will work and look nice. Specifically, I'm in the market for something 60-65 inches and under 1k. I was looking at the Vizio M series, but I haven't found any feedback specific to gaming.

The Vizio M series starts to be worth it starting with the 60 inch model from what I've read. This is because it can do 1080p @ 120Hz natively with 4K/60Hz support via HDMI 2.0 on HDMI port 5.

The 60 inch model is a couple of hundred bucks over your price range however ($1299+).

Oh, I'm just looking at the 1080p model, which is in the $800+ range. The big question seems to be whether the M is worth it over the E model.

It seems no worse than my old Sony KDL 40x3500 but l tried quite a few 30fps games (Driveclub being one l play often) before l placed the order. Anything 60 fps is just stunningly smooth and smear free.

It's an expensive set so i'd do what l did and take your PS4 into the store to try it out.

The lag is less in game mode,

The OLED is so worth it. I'm still in awe of the PQ this set puts out, owned it for 3 months now.

4K content as far as TV / movies are concerned is going to be a slow rollout. I expect we won't really see plentiful 4K content until 2017 or so. I'm fine with waiting until then - maybe a 65" 4K OLED will be around the same $2K price by then, I'll likely upgrade and move the 1080p set into the bedroom.

Bottom line though, I would not settle for another LCD after spending a good amount of time with this OLED set. Even if it was FALD I'd pass. FALD has OLED-like blacks but you get blooming artifacts on high contrast edges which is annoying.

Perfect timing, this thread pops up right when I'm looking around for TVs. I'm thinking the Vizio M series 65 inch but I saw an OLED that might be calling my name. Damn that would look good. Right now I'm in the 1500 range for budget I could definitely get a larger TV without OLED though.

Is 32 inches adequate for a rather small room? I'm eyeing the Vizio E32-C1 because it's affordable and has full array LED. Is this one recommended for general use and gaming?

Just dropped my Panny S60 on my foot during my move. Popped out of the frame, had some glimmer of hope it would still be fine since the screen didn't crack. Popped it on to find two lines running down the side.

...I really hate myself right now. Ugh.

*edit*

And now that I've calmed down, it is time to start looking through this thread for a new set. Going to miss those blacks.

*edit two because I don't want to bump this and I'm drinking away my sorrows*

Budget is less than 1,000 if possible, as I will be moving again in 2-3 years and am already scared.
Predominantly gaming and blu rays

Looking at Sony 800B's. Am I wrong in reading that it is the NA version of the 829B? Are there any huge differences? It also looks like 2015 models are inferior or am I reading that wrong?
How do these compare to the 950B's?

2014 W800B? They are good televisions. 2014 W950B has better color, better input lag, and more bells and whistles, but didn't review as well due to it's LG IPS panel.

Yup, 2014's. Unless there are 2015 models that are equivalent? I honestly don't understand Sony's labeling.

I see you have the 950b. I'd be taking a risk on it and ordering a scratched one from Amazon Warehouse but I've yet to be let down by those purchases.

Before I do anything brash I'm going to go to my local Panny repairman tomorrow and see if this is repairable though.

W950B has incredible deep color and rich contrast.

I've posted this here before, but below is a picture I took in 2014 of a 65" Sony W950B on the bottom and a 65" SamsungH8000 (the same TV as 7150 but curved) on the top. I set both in the store to the equivalent Vivid/Dynamic mode.

TcIruBU.jpg

Yea, at my store we have an open box 65" W950B with the other 60-65" and it looks so much better than any of them in terms of color production and brightness.

I don't even know where to start on researching new tvs. I usually buy a new one every couple years, but I've never owned a LCD/LED/OLED and completely clueless within that faction. All I know is I'm absolutely 100% fucking done with the image retention on my 65VT60. It's the most disgraceful crap I've seen in my life.

So if I'm looking for another 65" with a budget around 2.5 - 3k, is the 8500 the way to go? I know zero about LG or Sony as tv brands. I'm finally heading to a best buy for the first time in like five years this weekend just to see what's around.

Of the three main things I care about, I'd order them gaming > movies > sports if that makes any difference.

Go to AVSForum and find a threat in the plasma section that gives instructions on how to tweak the panels voltages. Its an easy process and you'll be amazed with your set afterward. You should be able to lower the black level even lower than straight out of box.

Sad day. Talked to the repair man by phone and when I described the issue he basically said it was going to involve replacing the screen. I had hopes since it was only a 1-2 foot drop directly onto my foot that maybe something had just become disconnected.

After investigating, I think I'll probably go with a w850b. Was a toss up between it and w950, but the 850's look to be easier to get my hands on. Would have rather had passive 3D though, but since I will be predominantly gaming it looks like a slightly better choice. Plus I can get 60" at around the 55" 950 range.

Unless someone knows of 2015 models that are comparable? Its basically only for gaming, netflix, and blu rays. Room will probably be dark, and I'm not necessarily committed to any brand, just seems the 2014 Sony's were well received here.

I have a Vizio M series right now that I'm probably going to return. It's a fantastic tv, but a few negatives are bugging me. There's vertical banding on the screen, which is invisible with most material, but try playing a driveclub/forza race with an overcast grayish color. Every turn you take, you'll see every line moving with your car. The local dimming was extremely impressive on the P-Series and is pretty good on the M-Series, except that it dims more than just the areas it needs to, causing white text to look darker. This is most likely due to the 32 dimming zones as opposed to 64 in the P-Series.

There's only one other tv I'm willing to try before giving up until next year, and that's the samsung JU7100. Supposedly very low input lag, great color and lower DSE. The only issue I saw was black uniformity wasn't that great, causing clouding. This is something I'd like to see in person.

I hate that plasma's are gone.

Thanks! Will definitely look into that.

The consumer version of rift is going to be a kick ass gaming screen for even just 2D stuff. OLED with a constant black frame between frames, that's going to kick ass.

Oh no, does this mean a Vizio E series can only have more worse local dimming which has the worse version of those described problems?
