Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

The F8500 is an incredible tv, one of the best; that price is insane. Just ridiculous.

Hell, I would have bought it for that price on a whim if I saw that open box price even though I don't need it. It was a flip between the Panasonic last high end plasma VT/ZT60 versus the Samsung F8500 for me to buy, and the ZT60 just edged it for me back when they first released.
 
I'm looking for a 55'', flat better than curved screen. I will be using it for both TV and PS4 so input lag is an issue. I'm currently looking at a Sony KD-55X8508C, do you guys think I'll be fine or are there better options on that price range?
 
For those considering the JU7100, I can personally attest that it's an amazing Television. I've had mine for several months now and use it for everything (TV, Movies, PC, Consoles going back three Gens); everything I've thrown at it is displayed beautifully.

Input lag comes in at just 26.1 ms (calibrated and set to game mode). It only has one component input (shared with the composite video input), which is it's only real downside.

Thanks for the info. I went off of the 'dot' color previously. Black was explained to be the better version (Green was to be avoided). Apparently, I have a TS01 JU7100.

For a better overall TV, get the Samsung UN55JU7100. It’s about equal to the X850C, but it has lower input lag and a better smart remote. It also has a glossy screen, which means it will reflect ambient light less than most other TVs do (though it is worse for light that is directly opposite the screen).

SO: Now I've stumbled on this JS8000 that has popped up recently at best buy stores. Same price for 60" as the JU7100, but apparently (ever so slightly) nicer? No One Connect box, and something called Quantum Dot technology?

Doesn't appear to have any professional reviews out there, and can't find input lag numbers anywhere. Shame, because it looks nice!

Haha if I knew I would have mentioned it for you and a couple others, but they didn't mention anything on that, though I asked. That was one of the knocks against the set, so hopefully if it isn't already, lag will be addressed for you guys next.
 
Anyone know what the input lag on the Sony KDL-48W700C/705C is?

I've found a forum post claiming it has lower lag than the Android models (W75+) and is on par with the 2014 models at about 17ms. But I'm not sure. I'm going to use it primarily for gaming so input lag is very important to me.

Edit: just found this polish page claiming 13ms which would be ridiculously good.

LG uses an IPS panel meaning great viewing angle but not so great contrast especially in a dark room. WebOS is definitely better that the current state of Android TV which Sony uses. The input lag of the LG will be pretty high so it won't be useful for gaming.

I just bought a Vizio M49-C1 for ~$350. It's a really nice stopgap until I can get an 4K OLED TV next Christmas. Colors are vibrant, upscaling is pretty great (720p and above), input lag seems to be on par with my old TV but black levels are below average. Definitely one of my better impulse buys :)

Purchased a refurbished Vizio S4251w-B4C (for more than they go for now new!) a few years ago and it's been great!
 
I hate to say it, but I'm kind of thinking about selling my Pioneer Pro-141FD 60" and grabbing a LED set. It's kind of killing me to do it, but the room the tv is currently in is rather small and unfortunately the tv puts off a ton of heat. Between that and my pc, the room generally runs 7-8 degrees hotter than the rest of the house.

Obviously I'm going to be taking a hit in picture quality, but what replacement would you guys suggest? The Vizio M series has always caught my eye, but I kind of wonder if they are overhyped sometimes. I'm really big on black levels, so edge lit is probably out of the question. OLED would be nice, but I can't afford the 65" models and the 55" is just too small.

What is exactly your budget? If you can't afford a 65" OLED you can't afford a FALD LED TV so there are only direct lit and edge lit options left.

I had that tv, the EF9500, for about 3 weeks. Absolutely stunning picture quality. Second to none. But playing shooters on it was a struggle so, sadly, I sent it back. The input lag is too much and makes moving the cursor mushy. Search through this thread for a lot more impressions from me on this tv, if you're thinking about getting it for gaming.

Thanks dude, you answered my concerns. Seems like I need to still be patient and wait for OLED to continue to mature in terms of input lag. OLED just looks soooo good, but it has to play well to be worth the investment.

Yeah It does in fact look sooooooooooo good. I really wanted to keep it, trust me. But playing Halo and CoD made me realize that I just had to let it go.

I've got the Samsung JS9500 for now. It's probably the second best tv (for picture quality) currently on the market. Input lag is super low, in the low 20s for input lag, and plays great. Obviously not as good as the OLED, but still damn good. You need to put up with less than perfect blacks, and horrendously visible blooming (luckily just visible in menus, I've never noticed it in game), but it's still a super nice TV.

I'm always hoping that LG releases an update that decreases input lag, or announces that their new models will be gaming focused, but I'm not holding my breath. Seems like OLED is a couple years away for the gaming focused crowd.
 
I received my Sony 55" XBR850C yesterday. My first Sony TV. I came over from buying Samsung tv's only. I have to say, this tv looks really good. The colors are amazing. I've been playing my games in "Game Mode" and it actually looks great.

Sony looks like they don't try and shove the "Sharpness" setting down your throat like Samsung does, because most the settings I've seen on the Sony so far were at neutral (or just above neutral). I like that.

I've noticed that my EC9300 screen has already collected dust, which is normal, but i also see things like prints of some sort. I just want to clean it, but the store warned me that i should be extra careful cause apparently there's a layer or something that you can damage if you aren't careful enough. Is a fleece cloth fine to use for this?

Console gaming or PC gaming on it? Pc gaming you will notice input lag immediately with a mouse cursor. Console gaming its honestly not that bad. If you're overly susceptible to input lag then it may bother you. I can notice it being a pc gamer but it's not game breaking to me and still crush pubs in MP when playing PS4. And the picture quality is by far the best of any tv to date, which is very valuable to me since I also do things like watch TV and blu rays (which is incredible!). Another oddity is that response time is basically instant but input lag hovers around 50ms. They released a firmware update address the 24p issue, I'm sure they'll do one for input lag. LG does support their sets well. I mean they updated some of their old sets to webOS2.0 for example, and this is their flagship.

Im a plasma guy holding onto my panasonic until something came along to blow it away, this TV destroys my old plasma which got retired to the bedroom.

By the way, is it normal that several movies on Netflix look somewhat...grainy on the TV? It's of course streaming and i believe not even every movie on there is 1080p, but some shows are very crisp and others somewhat grainy.

Hello Bodom, the EU version is the KDL 55x8505c. You have to be very lucky to find it for 1000 Euro, I ordered mine for 1200 Euros incl. shipping.

Not sure what I want to do now. I think I would be very happy with a 55" TV, especially coming from a 40", but a few people on here recommended going with a 60" based on my setup.

There are three TVs that interest me:


  • Vizio M60-C3
  • Vizio M55-C2
  • Sony XBR55X810C
The M60-C3 is tempting because it will be on sale for $800 on Black Friday. I was thinking of going to Walmart and trying to have them match Amazon (who is supposedly offering the M60 at the same price as Dell). I like the idea of getting the TV right away and potentially dealing with a quicker, easier return process in the event that I change my mind.

But part of me is still worried that the 60" will be too big. I was in the store tonight and 55" just seemed like the perfect size. Still, it doesn't seem entirely wise to pay the same price, if not a little more, for a smaller screen and lower specs (i.e. the M55).

Maybe it would make sense then just to go with the XBR55X810C though this is the most expensive option of the three.

My room size and lighting are adjustable for this, and I'll be using this mostly for playing games, watching sports, and streaming movies from Netflix. I'm really having a hard time passing up the absolute beauty of the OLED, but the 55" size just feels potentially too small. The 75" has the right size and seems to be ok with input timings, but I don't know about it for watching sports. The Samsung seems to be the "good at all, master of none" middle of the road solution.

HELP! :)

I wouldn't get the 850c, edge lits aren't worth it. Either go with the 940c, or equivalent, or don't go that route.

As much as I love OLED, I'm not a fan of LG's build quality. Technically speaking, the EG9600 has the best picture of the three. As an OLED display, it offers true black and the most accurate color representation. It has the highest input lag of the three, but, even then, it's barely outside the 50 ms realm of negligibility (50.1 ms to be exact). Due to the current trend in OLED TVs, the screen is unfortunately curved.

Samsung tends to offer what I consider to be the best overall picture (which is what you want when choosing a display). When compared to the JU7100, the JS8500 trades improved picture quality for higher input lag, though it clocks in at less than 40 ms. Both black and grey uniformity are solid.

Sony's high end TVs offer what is perhaps the best build quality on the market, though they often suffer from poor grey uniformity. The X850C has an input lag that is ever so slightly above that of the JS8500, though still less than 40 ms. It offers near-true black, which is outstanding for an LCD, and is the only one of the three capable of 120 Hz, though this is limited in application to 1080p.

Personally, out of the three, I'd go with the Samsung. The "master of none" assertion isn't quite accurate as it's solid across the board (for an LCD). Generally speaking, OLED offers the best picture quality, though the present fixation with curved screens negates many of the benefits offered by a superior image (this applies to LCDs as well). Comparatively, while the Sony offers what is likely one of the deepest blacks on an LCD display, its poor grey uniformity is a significant hindrance to overall picture quality. Furthermore, the Samsung specs tend to favor gaming with both low input lag and low motion blur.

The 65" und 75" x850c are direct lit, not edge lit. Motionblur is a little bit worst than the Samsung. 3K for the 75" is a steal though. But I guess the Samsung will be the best pick, especially Tizen OS seems to be the best choice for the regular day by day use.

I'd avoid that Sony. It's the biggest of the 3, but I am am more of the mindset that picture quality > size. You can always move your chair closer. You can't get the picture quality to improve.

I've basically posted this ad nauseum in the thread, but the current LG OLEDs have input lag that's too high for the type of games I play - shooters. I had the EF9500 for a period of time, and while it plays fine for most games, the second you try playing a shooter and move the reticle you notice how mushy the movements are. The image quality on the OLED is unreal, and I'm still hoping that the input lag gets improved via an update so I can rebuy it, but for right now it's sadly not something I'd recommend an anyone who likes games enough to join GAF.

AND - what's odd is that you chose the curved version. The other TVs are flat. This comes down to personal choice and your living conditions. If you're one person then the curve is awesome. I was incredibly skeptical, but after getting a curved tv and trying it for a bit I found that for games I actually prefer it. BUT - if you have to watch or view anything off axis then it's a nightmare. I HATE how much the image gets skewed.

If you have the cash and want the curve, I'd toss in Samsung's JS9500 as an option. That's what I'm currently using, and am pretty happy with it. The blacks are pretty decent when viewing content. You have to deal with obscenely horrendous bloom in menus, but it's not something I've ever noticed in game/movies/tv. And the input lag is super low (for a TV) in the low 20s.

Buying a TV is definitely a hard choice. Good luck!

Cool thanks for your advice. Went to the local Sony Center and they currently have the cheapest price I could find for EUR 1,460.00. Sadly it's still a bit too high for me. On the other side I would rather stick with Sony as I've had a Bravia for the last 10 years or so and have never been disappointed :)

I regularly play Sixth Gen games which are predominantly 480p and everything looks great. Ditto HD content. A good TV will upscale everything flawlessly.
