Plasma, LCD, OLED, LED, best tv for next gen

So as someone who has only followed TV tech for the last half year - I'm likely going to pull the trigger on an LG B6 when it comes out in the states. My only "should I wait?" question is: is any kind of free sync / g sync technology likely to be built into any sets in the next year or two?

It's the only feature that I'm really missing at this point, and I just haven't really heard any rumblings about it. Safe to say it's a long way off?

Edit: I will be using this as a living room entertainment and work station, PC included.

So how do the new 4k LEDs stack up to plasmas? I want to upgrade from my tiny 42" panny plasma already, but it seems like no LED maker has yet to pass it in picture quality. I sure as hell don't have money for one of the LG OLED models either.

I'm in the same boat. I have a 42 panny plasma and am thinking about getting the 65" Vizio P.

Best buy app has the un65ku6300fxza Samsung for sale at $1,499. i dont see it on rtings yet.

is this something brand new and exclusive to BB? Any word on this tv?

Does anybody do financing on the lg oleds? I feel like thats the only way I could get an e6, is if I could chip away like $400 a month on it.

I would say there is no chance of adaptive/G-sync in the next few years, there has never even been a murmur about it. A terrible shame if you ask me.

I am a big advoactor of OLED after having used it for a sustained period of time, even as a PC monitor. The colour, contrast and black levels are a sight to behold, and personally I have had not a jot of image retention and proper reds the likes of which you have never seen.

might just want to save up then and wait for the price to drop over time?

The trickiest part is the outlets offering 0% financing probably don't offer the best price (hello Best Buy)

Financing a TV really isn't a good idea. Save up $400 a month instead, then buy it at the end of the year when price is at its lowest. I expect you'll see sub $3K by Black Friday on the 55"

Best Buy always has 24mo interest free on their store card (sometimes even 36mo) on something this expensive. So long as you make the minimum payments on time and have it paid in full before 24mo term (I'd target 2 or 3 months early), there's no downside, it's a legitimate offer. The gotcha is if you don't pay it off on time, you get hit with all the back interest. Missing or late payments probably also void the offer and hit you with back interest. This is not a good time to buy one though. Wait for the B6 and C6 reviews, the price drops will also likely be enormous later this year.

Not sure how active this thread is, but... my dad wants me to pick out a cheap 75" TV for him. I have not at all kept up with the market since I got myself the last of Panasonic's plasma models (which I plan to keep for as long as I possibly can...).

I'm in Switzerland. There's a Samsung and a Sony one I'm supposed to choose between, and I honestly can't figure out which one I should go with, even after doing some research:

Any pointers?

I'm in your same situation, also in a PAL region.

The available brands which sell a 75" are Samsung, Sony, LG, Sharp, and the very cheap Wansa. (Sadly Vizio still didn't expand to PAL region)

The first 3 are kinda expensive, Sharp is moderate, while Wanda is the cheapest.

We need a 75" for my family's big living room with +10 feet seating arrangement.

I've been looking at the Samsung 75J6400, seems good.

Any other suggestions?

I have a really nice 42 inch Panny Plasma. I replaced it in my living room with a 55 inch Samsung js8500. Couldn't be happier, awesome TV. Great for gaming and blu rays, very good for directv. I still have the plasma in my bedroom, but I do prefer the js8500's picture in every way but black levels, and even that is pretty close.

I love my 75x940c and the new 940d is basically the exact same screen just thinner and without side speakers. Depenidng on if your family room has dedicated spearkers or not, I'd use that to decide which to get. While the last of the 940c's are being sold you can get them as low as $4,000.

What a time to be alive 42" screen described as tiny! :) I have 51" Samsung Plasma (9100 I think) I am sticking with it until 4K OLED screens come down in price. I am more than happy to keep it for another couple of years as the picture and especially refresh rate for gaming are great. I just pretend OLED screens do not exist.

PS4k will get alot more people interested in 4K screens, my guess is the PS4K will still run games in 1080p (with upscalling to 4K) so I think the benefits will still be seen with people with 1080p screens, outwith 4K media support.

I was considering doing this later once reviews drop. I've always been wary about financing something, but it isn't as though I don't have the money and couldn't pay it off immediately. This would just provide a nicer cushion in case some other unexpected (car, apt, Doctor, etc) came up. Though if the price winds up being too high, I'll put it off altogether.

As longe as I'm allowed to pay something off faster then I'm good.

EDIT: also need to see if they let you pay a chunk up front to reduce payments.

I'm super happy with my 55" Sony W800b. It's the biggest TV that I can fit into my entertainment center, and it looks great mounted.

Once adaptive sync is adopted into HDMI and is proliferated throughout the industry, I imagine I'll upgrade to a 70"+ OLED or protector depending on how tech advances in the next three years regarding latency/price.

I've read that it has bad up-scaling with noise, how is yours when up-scaling 1080p content?

The B6 shall be mine! When is that thing estimated to release? Or is it still TBD?

I saw the E6 at Best Buy today and my jaw was still dragging on the floor while heading back home...

My girlfriend is looking for a new tv. 60+ inch. Budget $1,200 CAD.

Recommend best value? She isn't a super sophisticated user, but likes her netflix, blu-ray and Nintendo games.

Looking at the Vizio e60-c3.

55" while smaller will open her price range up to a shit ton more options.

Is she dead set on 60+?

Well I bit the bullet and got the Vizio P50-C1. It's good, real good. I already like it more than my plasma. Never in my dreams that I thought an LED and Vizio brand tv would impress me this much.

Any input lag? I read HDMI 5 is the one you want for less lag. The 50" does not have a true 120hz refresh rate, supposedly its a different panel than the bigger models.

The black levels have been the thing that have impressed me the most I think. Very happy with it.

Nope, no input lag. I am using HDMI 5 with my PS4. I know a few reviews mention the TV is pretty good in the input lag department.

I'm glad you posted this. What plasma are you coming from?

I'm thinking of picking up the Vizio P65-C1 as a stop-gap until A) OLED drops in price B) 4K HDTVs hit near 100% Rec. 2020. I've a 9G Pioneer Kuro Elite Pro-111fd right now that I do love, but it's 7 years old now.

The only things I don't like about the Vizio is it only hits ~82% of DCI-P3 and HDR10 support still has yet to be released via firmware (yes, we were promised 90 days, but just stating it's not out yet).

The plasma i'm coming from is a Panasonic S60 model. It's on the lower end from Panasonic that year, but it still produced one of the best picture quality I have seen.

Just pulled the trigger on a LG OLED 55EG910V, paid 1480€ for it. Should be here in a few days (maybe even tomorrow), i honestly can't wait.

Any advice from OLED owners? I'm upgrading from a Sony W4000 40".

So my 65E6 has arrived at Value Electronics. And right now they are in the process of breaking it in, doing QC and then will be calibrating it. I am guessing I probably will be receiving it within the next couple of weeks.

Cool, always love some more OLED impressions. I've avoided seeing one in person in hopes that I'll be able to look at an e6 and b6 side by side.

I'm currently researching possible TV's to replace my current one which is a Sony KDL-42w829b. I'm interested in the HDR technology, at first sight it looks like a lot more details are shown in an HDR image, however the comparisons I've seen always made by doubt as the amount of details in an HDR image seems to be way to high compared to the SDR image. How much of those comparisons are true, is the jump from SDR to HDR really that high?

If HDR is truely the one technology to go for, is it really only limited to 4K TV's? Or is HDR also available for 1080p/3D TV's? Are native HDR TV's capable of converting SDR images to HDR?

And the next big question is: How many PS3/PS4/VITA(TV) games already have full HDR support? Only one that I know that claims to support it is that console port of Star Trek Online.

I'm having a problem with my LG EG920v and my Pioneer VSX-324. When ARC is enabled the sound sometimes skips a second, even when I'm not using ARC at that moment. I never had this problem with my previous TV. When I disable ARC the problem disappears.

My TV is running on firmware 4.20.70.

Rainbow Six Siege added HDR rendering this week. But as far as I know none of the current console even support HDR output.

It simply can't be beaten at its price. With a 1080p source it's picture quality is astounding (but also has an excellent scaler so that 720p looks beautiful, perfectly crisp with punchy colours). Its only fault is uniformity at very low luminance full grey screen, which is a non existent problem with real world content.

My reccomendation is to check:
1) for red tinting of screen sides on a full white screen, even if 2016 sets seem to be completely tint free
2) for bad pixels, as unluckily (from my experience) they're quite frequent on oled tvs

Other than this, I suggest to relabel console hdmi inputs as "PC" from the general inputs screen for best unprocessed picture and lower input lag (also select "Game" as the picture mode to further cut it down). Set gamma to 2.4 for a punchier picture and adequate oled light to your room light conditions.

My full settings for gaming (in a dark/dimly lit room), every other setting you don't find here is either greyed out or "Off".

Picture mode: Game

Picture Adjust menu:
Oled light: 36 (gives 120nit target on full white)
Contrast: 76
Brightness: 50
Sharpness: 10 or 20 depending on your taste (0-10 is more natural, 20+ is crisper but looks coarse on certain games)
Color: 48

Expert control menu:
Gamma: High1 (equals to 2.4)

White Balance sub-menu:
Color Temperature: cursor all the way to the right

Picture option Menu:
Black Level: Low

This set gives on itself a very plasma-like natural looking picture, set up with the settings I posted it's very similar in look to my previous Panasonic plasmas having a balanced, pleasing and not overblown picture. Colours and contrast are breathtaking.

Let me know if you like them.

I'm staring at a P65-C1 right now and, yeah, how the hell has a Vizio been the HDTV to topple my cherished Kuro Elite?!

I haven't played a video game on it yet, but that's coming after I finish watching some TV.

4K looks killer on this TV, too. The only odd thing I've encountered is that there is some choppiness on 60fps sources, even with Reduce Motion Blur & Judder turned off. I'm looking on AVSForums to see if there's a fix. I'll be trying out some 60fps games today, too

Do it if you're upgrading for size alone, it will be a downgrade from the Kuro in image quality.

I'm thinking of moving my Panasonic P50GT25 Plasma to the room and getting a Vizio P55-C1 for the living room. I stopped by a local Best Buy and they only had the 50 and 65 version on display but I liked what I saw.

The tablet seems like it could be just as annoying as it is cool.

The only downside is that anything that is played through casting won't work with my Hyperion ambilight setup, so that may move to the room with the plasma as well.

I've hooked up the Kuro Elite again and am seeing if it's any worse/better of a image. 65" seems like a HUGE display in my living room (which is a good thing).

The tablet is cool as a tablet and a bit annoying as a remote. Though there is a traditional remote that, though it looks like it only has a few buttons, it can everything but tweak the settings on the TV.

Any reason why the P55? They use IPS panels, while the rest use VA. From my half a day with the P65 I have to say it's a damned fine set.

Thanks for the detailed answer. The TV should be here tomorrow, they had to order it from the store so i think it should be a 2016 panel. Fingers crossed about the bad pixels.

I'll try the settings right away (i also read that this is one of the very few TVs that look good in PC mode, which is a great thing considering how much it lowers input lag), think i'll stick with 5-10 sharpness as i hate when it's too pronounced. Contrast seem a bit low compared to what i use on my current TV, but it's OLED vs LCD so i'll have to try. I read that the optimal OLED light setting was 54, but i'll try both and see what i like the most.

For normal TV/Blu Ray/Netflix, what do you think about RTINGS settings?

I don't get why there hasn't been an indie TV marker that has stepped in and made the perfect TV for HTPC users and enthusiast - 1080p or 4k, 55"-65", Full array, No motion smoothing, no dynamic LED, Low Input Lag, No Speakers, Low amount of OS.

The 65" is too far out of my price range and there was something missing from the 50" that I can't remember at the moment.

I use to be good at picking out TVs a few years ago but stopped reading about that scene for quite a awhile. My gf wants to buy a 55inch 4k, for movies and gaming. 1k is her budget.
