So I am trying to make a decision on what I should do for a new TV. Right now I have a Panasonic 50 inch S30 in my living room, but no TV in my bedroom. I am fairly happy with the quality of my S30 video wise, however for the last year it has made a vibration noise that gets louder the lighter the screen is. I want to get a TV for my room but trying to decide if I want to move the s30 into my room and buy either a VT60 for my living room, a Sony KDL55, or keep the s30 in my living room and buy a smaller TV for my bedroom. Suggestions?

The stand is wobbly if you try and knock it around but it's fine as long as you're not trying to wrestle with it. It's a good TV for a bright room. It's got an AR coating on it and it gets retina searingly bright if you want it to (i use it in my living room at a LED level of 2 or 3 out of 10, and it's got windows directly across from it right behind the couch)

That is a bit disconcerting with regards to the stand, cat and all. Great to hear about the bright room though, cannot wait to pick this up tomorrow. I was wanting a 60" or 65" but I really do not think it is needed considering I'm going to be 7' away.

Gah, Leo Laport buys a $10k TV. He once bought a Pioneer Kuro set and could not figure out how to turn it on so he sent it back thinking it was defective. Then he got the replacement and same problem. His tech look at page one of the manual which explains how to turn it on. Some people have more money than brains.

Question for those of you with a Sony W series. I'm looking at a W802A. Sony's specs page seems to indicate that the Component input only accepts 1080i or 1080p, not lower resolutions. That can't be right, can it? No 480p from GC/PS2/Xbox?

It says 480p right there in the middle. The 1080p/60p can be over HDMI or component, but that doesn't exclude the lower resolutions.

HDMI to VGA Converter + VGA Cable = Absolutely awesome, no input delay at all, I used to use the PC HDMI port on my LG7600 (Last years TV) even on game mode and its rated highly as a gaming TV, the VGA port on the back of the TV has NO PROCESSING at all, its absolute bliss, I just hope some people try it with equal success, it really is like using a monitor in comparison, everything happens SMOOOTH like you see in gameplay trailers/youtube etc.
Ended up getting a new TV on Thursday, a 42" LG LA6200. Coming from a 2009 Samsung 60hz LCD the difference is incredible. I can't speak enough about the clarity of the picture, it looks so clear and so perfect. I can't believe how good it looks, and my other TV was 1080p also. I'm amazed again and again. I love all the Smart features, very convenient to have all the apps available through the TV without having to go through my PS3. The 3D aspect is also incredible, we watched Into Darkness 3D blu ray and it just looked stunning. Even more impressive was how Arkham City looks in 3D, flying around just looks incredible. Wish I had more games that used 3D.
The only downside is my wife loves the Smooth (soap opera effect) motion. She said it looks more real to her, I can understand for 3D movies because its easier on the eyes and sports, but not for everything. Luckily the TV didn't need that much calibration for 2D and 3D, only slight adjustments that CNET and LCD buyers guide recommended with their calibrations. Also, if you play a game without game mode the input lag is insane, but turn game mode on and holy shit what a fast experience. Completely transforms it, I also tried the 2D-3D conversion while playing Uncharted 2 and inFamous 2 and it actually looked really good. Not as good as Arkham City's native 3D mode, but still impressive.
If anyone is looking for an affordable ($615) back lit LED/LCD that has 3D (comes with 4 glasses), smart features, and a excellent game mode, then this thing is a steal.

I read up on this after running into issues. You CAN NOT calibrate a tv for gaming because the gaming industry NO video standards. Different games will show slightly different colors on your tv.
Note: In the video they say that the process of calibration is to get the TV to look the same as the screen the movie makers are looking at when they mastered the movie. This works because ALL movie makers use the same standard for all of the monitors they use.
At best game developers keep all of their internal monitors the same per company but the colors and brightness will change per developer. You will drive your self into madness changing tv settings for every game you play.

I picked one up today, it's a bit better than my 6 year-old Samsung
It was sitting next to a W800a panel, which is what I was originally planning on buying, but the 900's picture quality(colour especially) was noticeably better. Really happy with this TV.

Holy crap, I got it for $2500 this weekend, in AUSTRALIA! What happened to Australia being more expensive than everywhere else?
Although mind you some other shops in Oz still have it for $3500.
JB actually have it for $2150 up 'til today. I would have bought it but my speakers are up for sale and aren't sold yet. Hopefully next weekend I'll be able to buy it or the Samsung F8000.

I know they did. Good Guys have a price guarantee where they'll refund the difference plus 20%. I visited GG yesterday so in reality I ended up getting the TV for $2087.
If you're playing CoD online you may want to skip the ST60, the input lag is about double that of the S60. I think competitive online is one place it will be noticed or at least leave you at a disadvantage.
Now for quality, check out this thread. It directly compares the ST60 to the S64, which is a S60 with an anti-glare filter so it's a pretty good gauge of ST60 vs S60.

I ran the slideshows on my ST60, mixing in regular TV now and again, and then calibrated it. I found that the colors seemed somewhat off, possibly even less sharp, and reverted to the out of the box settings. So am I just some plebe who doesn't appreciate the accurate picture/color representation of the calibrated settings, or is it possible I did something wrong?

Calibrated displays can look a little on the warm side until your eyes adjust to them.
Same with sharpness, a little can help some SD broadcast material but it looks nasty for games.

I think my VPL-HW55ES should be arriving next week, so I should hopefully get it set up over the weekend and I'll let you know how it is.
I do plan on having it professionally calibrated, but you're supposed to put a good 100 hours or so into the lamp before you do, so that'll be something I probably do late this year/early next year.

Echoing Frank here, how did you calibrate it. It's not something you can do by eye, apart from the basics and even that will at least require some kind of test patterns.

PS4 (hdmi input 1)
Xbox one (hdmi input 2)
WiiU (hdmi input 3)
Then a 3 way splitter hooked to (hdmi input 4) for my 360, ps3, and pc... Because I am assuming the w900a does not have a pc input.
Would this work, or is this possible??? If I cut the 360 or the pc on will it automatically switch to them? Or would it be something I would have to change on the switch?

A smart switch will switch to a powered on source automatically. Just make sure to pick one that's automatic.

I need some help here, I thought of asking for it in this thread, since it seems to be (somewhat) related to my problem and I would be very grateful if I could get some opinions..
A few days ago I was asking for some opinions on the bravia led 42 W653a, and they were all positive. I ended up buying that tv (651A in my country) and have been impressed by the image and mostly by the low input lag. I've had it for a week now.
Since the second day I started noticing what it seems to be some banding or dse on the center of the screen, upper right corner while playing FC3. Something in the horizon caught my eye, specially when it's dusk. I became a little paranoid and booted gta V. During day time, with hot colours it's not super noticable but in night time it is, once again, in the sky or when there's fog. I now notice some "shadows" throughout the top of the screen, mostly from center to the right end.
I decided to try a few more games (AC Revelations, UC2, Infamous 2, Dragons Dogma) and if it "effect" was there, it was a lot less noticable but I'm kinda ocd about these things. I know it's there and it's bothering me a bit. I took two pictures of the tv, one with a grey picture and another from the side, just with a black screen.
If someone could give me an opinion on whether or not I should replace it (still have a week left to return it and have them give me another w651a). You think I should stick with what I have, and that this isn't so bad of a panel, or is it serious and I should get a replacement from the store? I'm not well versed in this, and honestly have no idea if this is really bad or not.
It seems to have some DSE on the upper center of the screen.
Are those bands normal? Should I worry?
I'm sorry for this post but I'm kinda worried and I thought of this thread to seek some help. I still have 7 days to replace it, although I wanted to keep this model. Should I try for a replacement? It is normal in that almost every LED backlit TV will have this issue to varying degrees, unless you're very lucky of course. However if it's bad enough to be noticable and distracting during gameplay then in my opinion it more than warrants a replacement.
This issue happened to me a few years ago when I bought a Sony NX710 LED TV, and Sony ended up replacing the panel on the TV. When I complained that the new one was just as bad they ended up replacing it with an NX720 which was a vast improvement. I've also seen the issue on a friends Samsung but he wasn't as pedantic as much so he didn't really care. So as annoying as it can be, it's a bit of a luck of the draw scenario.
I actually have the same issue with my new W900a which I'll be contacting Sony about in the near future.
For more examples just google 'LED Horizontal Banding' and you'll see you're not alone.

It's kinda hard to see the banding in that pic, but return it asap if it bothers you.
Sharp used to manufacture every single HTDV with horizontal or vertical banding for a few years straight, while Samsung, Sony & LG had practically none.
Banding is worse than backlight clouding for me. Especially if you can see it while gaming.

Yeah, the grey pic doesn't show it too well but if you lower the brightness and the contrast on the TV I bet it becomes more apparent.
I have a Sony W905a and have my 3 consoles and PC each into their own HDMI ports, and it works like a bomb. Just enable gaming mode on each input.
I used a switch on my previous TV which only had 2 HDMI ports, and it never worked quite right, signal issues, sound not transmitting properly over optical, and having one more remote. Just not worth it.

I only got my W900 yesterday, but GTA V looks fucking awesome to my eyes. I still haven't messed around too much with the settings either.
Thank you guys for your help. It's mostly noticeable during night time. Tried to play a bit of PES now, during daytime, and it's a little noticeable. My gf says she can't see it in most games, but she saw it now. Called the shop, they say they will send a technician to verify the problem, and if it's verified they will bring me another tv. My only fear is that they give me something worse, but from what I gathered, I will have both tvs here, so that means I can test the "new" one before they take the other away. If it's worse i might just settle for what I have right now. It's really a stupid lottery.
Never owned a LCD bigger than 32", maybe that's why I never noticed any of these problems before. Maybe it's not reason to worry, but it's better to be overzealous sometimes.

THX recommended viewing distance is diagonal screen size divide by 0.84 which would give you distance in inches. So for a 50" tv that would be 59.5", ~6 feet. This is to provide the most immersive experience such that the screen most fills your field of view.
If you're not as concerned about that you could safely add a foot or two, but I would think 10 feet is getting a bit far for that size of screen.
At that distance I would look at 65" and 65" only. 50" is way too small.
