I do get that, and instead I think it would have best if they had decided to let game devs decide if they want to force the use of a DS5 or not PER GAME.
I mean, I currently play one game quite a lot, an MMO, I have a Scuff controller which I use with this game for the back pedals. Trying to play it without those paddles is going to be super annoying for me.
But that's a PS4 game you say!? Well, if they make a PS5 patch what is it then? A PS4 game running the same like a PS5 game or is it a PS5 game?
To me it then becomes a PS5 game and if Sony then restricts me to play the same darn game, which is not using the new features at all, with my old controller I will be mighty sad.
Another example, I also play a lot of Destiny 2 (well used to anyway), it will get a nice new shiny PS5 patch and thus it will become a PS5 game which means I can not use my old controllers with paddles anymore...
If they had added back buttons/paddles OR they had already announced an add-on like they recently did for the DS4 I would not have minded but now I'm kinda peed off that I won't be able to play those games how I want to.
Sooooo, they can sorta solve this, for me at least, if they allowed cross-gen games which get a PS5 patch AND which do not use the new features yet to still support the DS4 controllers.
Well, I'm behind ditching the optical port, never used it anyway, but my Scuf controllers weren't cheap!
Honestly, I don't care if they force people to use the DS5 with NEW games that actually use the new features, I do mind they do the same darn thing for games that are cross-gen and/or get a patch which then become PS5 games as well.
They need to separate those two types. I have 3 Scuf controllers here, each was around €200, can't exactly easily replace them unless I win the lottery
