PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale |OT| Use Supers to Smash your Bros!

Speaking of Toro, I'm really curious. His Torobi/Oni stances have easily references from Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, but I can't for the life of me figure out which moves relate to Tekken in the Justice stance exactly. Any Tekken fans recognize which character uses which move or is it just supposed to be really generic? I do equate the donkey kick with Ryu though...

Awesome. Just keep in mind though, don't judge the game "as the first in the series, or it's potential for future installments/DLC". It's really a bad argument when I see it being tossed around, as if it were just a game made to "test the waters".

No doubt. I generally review games on these criteria:

Controls: How do they feel? Are they responsive? Am I battling with the controls more than I am the enemies in the game?

Graphics: Do the graphics convey the tone/theme that the developer is intending? For example, Silent Hill shouldn't look like Super Mario Bros, in my opinion. Art design is the real important factor, not just how many polygons are being pushed on screen.

Sound: Is the soundtrack conveying tone/theme effectively (subjective, but I think we all know poor sound design). Is the voice acting solid? Sound effects strong?

Game design/Game play: Is the game fun? Am I enjoying myself? An interesting example would be Heavy Rain. It's not a traditional game in terms of it's game design, but I enjoyed playing it multiple times. There are games like Super Mario Bros 3, which I think has very simplistic game play at it's core, but it's another game that I can play over and over again. Then we have something like Legendary: The Box, or Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen 2, which fail on every level of game design to be engaging, and fun to play.

I then sum up my review on a Buy/Rent/Pass scale. I don't like numbered scores on reviews. Most of us, when we read reviews, just want to know if we should Buy, Rent, or Pass on a game.

I'm not reviewing the console the game is on. I'm not reviewing its potential as a system seller. I'm not reviewing what the game should be. I'm reviewing what the game is, and if I'm enjoying myself, and think that perhaps others may enjoy it to. My "Buy/Rent/Pass" recommendation is only a suggestion. Ideally, the body of my reviews will give you enough information to make an informed decision.

Here's a review I wrote a while back on my site. I haven't updated it in ages, and most of my future reviews will not be published there anymore (I simply don't have the time to maintain my own site anymore)It's at least an example of a general review from me (if not a dated example: http://selectstartgames.wordpress.com/2010/10/31/alan-wake-review/

So where are you guys seeing the game? I have went all around town and none of my stores have it out yet. I work at Best Buy and like week released before the Wii U released one of my co-workers bought the Wii U version of AC3. When I asked how, he said the street date broke or something. Could I do that with All-Stars?

My work day has been going by pretty fast. I at least get off work in 4 hours at 5, I'll get home around 6, and spend some time with my wife until the game becomes available to download.

Do we know for sure if it's 12:01 EST? I live on the west coast, so a 12:01 EST time would be perfect for me. I'd be able to download the Vita version fairly quickly, and play it while I download the PS3 version on both of my PS3's overnight.

I have to work in the morning, but I'll stay up past midnight just to get my hands on this game tonight. I'll be tired as hell tomorrow, but I'll be able to play it on the bus ride to work. Lol.

What I mean is, can you play matchmake online with different options like Stock, different time limits, Kill Limit, etc.

Yeah there is something called quick match which searches for things based upon what you want. There is game type with the options free for all and 2 v 2, match limit with the options time limited, kill limited and stock limited and you can adjust items and searched based upon those options.

I read the review, and it was very informative. And major props for not "grading" the game. Though I will say that the word "I" tends to come up a lot. In some cases it's appropriate (i.e. "Am I fighting against the controls?", as you've mentioned) but in order to have the review seen on a eye-to-eye between the reviewer and the gamer, it's better off cutting out some of the personal touches ("I feel," "I think," etc.). It also gives it a professional tone. Going back to the bolded line (which is such a great point to address in a review), you could further improve that by saying "Would this be an issue for the gamers in general?" (of which you'd also need to be able to judge accordingly in order to use).

Good stuff, nonetheless. I'm looking forward to your review, as well as the reviews of any gaffer that's willing to throw one out here in this thread.

Thanks napalm!

Is that any good?

I was getting it solely for the better battery life but maaann it fits on there perfectly! I'm very happy with how it feels and everything. Gonna be hard to put down. Pleasantly surprised.

Also can anybody confirm if Sackboy's one two slap can combo into his level 1? Looks like it can

Thanks for giving it a read, and the pointers as well. I tend to write what pops into my head as I'm writing the review. I see what you mean by the personal touches, but I suppose I prefer to express that it's simply my opinions coming across in my reviews, and not declarative statements. Just what I think about the game. Since I can only speak for myself, and not the general gamer. I try to be informative more than anything. I've read so many reviews where they don't even explain basic game play mechanics, just go off on some tirade or another. I always preferred reviews where the reviewer talks about the stuff you can do in the game, and if it's fun or not.

I'm definitely keeping your pointers in mind for the PBR review. Thanks.

Man I am sooooo hyped!

Guys, let's look back on our adventure. Do you remember how it all began?

For me it all began with Paul Gale, I never heard the name before, but I remember I first heard of the idea of PSBR from news sites reporting on him.

I was initially disappointed because I wanted a Power Stone-type game, as it made much more sense-- Sony games started in 3D, so why not have them in full 3D?

More than that, I was terrible at 2D fighting games, and I didnt want to not buy this game because of it being 2D and complicated. I only played SSB a handful of times and while it was accessible, I felt the 2D made me feel limited.

But I was still hyped at the thought, until I read criticisms/skeptics discuss the Supers.

"You spend all this time building to a super? Hits dont mean anything. If you miss you are completely screwed. What about balance?"

Despite all that, I remained optimistic, but heavily let down by 2D and the concept of the supers. Then I joined this thread and felt positive vibes, felt reassured.

I remember the EVO panel where they showed how to dodge supers, and the combo system, and I said "wow this is shaping up nicely, even though it's 2D it feels very free and creative in what you can do"

Then, the Hong Kong beta thing happened, Initially, I was taken back by the difficulty in keeping track of my opponent. I was constantly getting tossed around and never felt I was in control of the character. I remember just swinging wildly and not knowing if I was hitting, where I was, or how to defend myself.

But I worked at it, and it eventually all clicked. My worries just went away. Supers felt fun, but more important to me, the 2D worked, and it felt perfect. Moves were easy, but required forethought for combos and it was just fun to think of the metagame and the other players' actions.

I remember being that one tosser who added himself onto the beta list even though he had never posted in the thread before :p

I remember hoping so hard for Wander and Raiden, feeling vindicated when the leak happened and all of my friends ate crow as to which MGS character would be in the game, and feeling like a distant relative had passed away when Team Ico was revealed as the stingy "artists" they are.

I remember being bummed out when I got "stuck" with Dino and Big Daddy for the writeups instead of Raiden like I wanted, but then growing to love and anticipate them (the former moreso than the latter).

Now I feel like part of the family, and I'm even running the first tournament!
