PlayStation Network Thread | June 2015

HOLY FUCKING MEGATON GUYS:

The crew at Armature continues to prove that they're the right studio for the job. We'll let them do the talking:

“Hi Bloodstained backers - Armature here with another update. It turns out that a people have shown a ton of interest in our plan to port UE4 to the WiiU and PS Vita. Since they're not officially supported platforms, it's going to be a lot of work to get Bloodstained and UE4 on these platforms, but we are up to the challenge.

“Since the community got these platforms off the ground, we figure that it's best to let the community have them back when we're done. As a result, after the release of Bloodstained we will share, for free, the UE4 WiiU and Vita code with any developer authorized to develop on those platforms! Thank you all very much for this opportunity!”

Holy shit. Armature. YOU ARE THE BEST.

Unfortunately, by the time Bloodstained is out, both Wii U and Vita could be dead :/

Otherwise it's a wonderful news. Armature is great <3

Hey if the PSP can last 10 years, the Vita can too.

Seriously though who cares about living/dead systems, just play it on the system you like.
If I gotta get a Wii U to play Super Mario 3D World, i'LL get a Wii U, simple as that.

Operation Abyss showed up today! Whoot. No rush shipping turned out to be alright; it said to expect it on the 16th. Though i honestly don't know how it got set to no rush-- i have prime so can get release day shipping free.

I hate this line of thought. Why would you ever wish that a game doesn't exist? It's easy enough to ignore the games or comments. PC has games that are 100x times worse and no one calles PC gamers anything. People are just idiots.

Seriously. It never makes any sense to me. We can get extremely hard core porn on almost any internet enabled device that has a screen within seconds. We allow books to be erotic, we allow magazines to be pornographic, we allow films to be porn, we put it on late night cable and plaster it across the internet. But for some reason games need to be puritan? When the actors aren't even real? Makes no sense to me. There should be full on sex sims for those that want them [there probably are, though I don't know]. If I don't want something, I don't buy it. Problem solved. It's not my fucking business what other people want, buy, or make.

As a programmer I am baffled. I can't even imagine how much work it'll take and they are just giving it away. This whole kickstarter has just been a good ride so far, I am throwing a couple more bones to support them. This is insane.

I'm not. It's work they need to do for themselves and they're effectively getting paid to do it. Sharing it with the community afterwards is goodwill. Sure, I suppose they could spend even more time on it polishing it up and creating some sort of purchasable code set... but all in all giving it away for the goodwill is cheaper and easier.

Be still my heart.

Mad props to them. Porting the engine is enough work on itself, and they are releasing it for use to everyone? Now I'm not mad buying that Batman game. Yeah its mediocre but not bad.

I think Polyphony learned their lesson with GT5 and won't let another super long dev cycle happen again.

And yeah, the UE4 port thing is fantastic news, though it'll be pretty late in both devices' cycles. But I imagine Vita will be getting indie games for yearrrrs unless a successor happens.

People are all kinds of fucked up about what games are allowed to be. No they can't be art, no they can't be porn, no they can't make me *shudder* feel things. Games need to be about a balding 30 something white male shooting a bunch of generically bad other adult males with as many guns as you can fit on screen. The only games allowed to exist.

It's great, but unfortunately it won't be very useful as I can't see a lot of devs(especially those using UE4) releasing games in 2017, on Wii U and Vita. I'll be so fucking glad to eat crow, though.

Of course my Vita will last well beyond its market lifecycle. Just as my PSP does as well.

As a layman, what does the "giving the code away" means?
Who will be doing the Vita version? What can people benefit from it?

It means that other developers will be able to use the Unreal Engine 4 program to make or port games on the Vita and Wii U, both of which aren't natively supporters of the code. To put it simply, they are making UE4 work for Vita and Wii U and giving other developers the chance to use afterwards, for free.

The benefits of porting the code are immense. Since the game is originally done in UE4, Bloodstained won't have to be redone from the ground up by Armature for those 2 consoles. By working on modifying UE4, they pretty much will only have to tweak a few things in the games files, add some functionality and whatnot, but that's it. Since you want it in simple terms, all they will have to do is drag the file "bloodstained.ps4" onto the Vita or Wii U through their modified engine, and it should run without the need to recreate the whole game.

I'll be very surprised and impressed if they don't run into big issues getting the engine to run well on the Vita and drop that idea completely, which will result in a delay and a change in engine to UE3 or Unity.

Oh wow, that's incredible. I was thinking they would release the code of the game so others would port it to the Vita.

Incredible, I want to pledge now just to show my appreciation.

My PS+ subscription is almost at its end and I get this email:

7 days left before your free games disappear

I don't like that kind of advertising, almost like a threat. Would they even be removed from my system/download list?

I think you will be eating crow, I really do.

The tech in the vita, while far from cutting edge, is sufficient for quite awhile and it seems as if it's fairly easy to get smaller PS4 games running on vita.

The vita faithful buy a ton of stuff, so it's an easy market. And if we don't get a vita 2, then it's a constant market for quite awhile as we're not going anywhere. It's not like i'm going to switch over to nintendo... I'm firmly ensconced in the playstation ecosystem and so are many others.

From Sony's standpoint, the vita just gets cheaper and cheaper to make.

I do think they should reposition it as the 'best' remote play device with the oft discussed physical changes (triggers, etc). I've said it before, but best case they'd also upgrade anything internal to make Remote Play even better (since i'm sure they're still working on the tech) as well as my dream case scenario
upgrade the processor enough to run ps2 classics but don't change the operating system -- that is, still just play regular vita games so as not to split the base
.

That device won't suddenly fly off the shelves, but it would certainly last the entire generation of the PS4 and possibly even into the PS5 due to remote play. It's relatively cheap [cheaper still if they don't change anything], and keeps them in the handheld space so they can reconsider options in 5 years or so.

Ultimately, though, it's as simple as -- if we keep buying games, they'll keep making them.

They'll be there if you installed them, but won't start up.
And even if you don't renew in 7 days
Samara is calling
, you'll get access to them all when you eventually renew. PS: It will screw up your download list, badly, since all the PS+ Games you own will appear on the top.

Well Sony, I'm sorry, but I'm not really playing any past or current PS+ games and I can't afford it right now. Go ahead and disappear with my games, I have enough on my plate as it is.

jp ps plus is the only worthwhile one anyway, other regions are terrible

NA PS+ offers are shit, I have plus since it began and aside of some offers like Dragon's Dogma and Yakuza 4, it's been crap.

I have plus for the next two years already but I really wouldn't care if I losed any of the free games I have.

If I keep buying games I'll be eating crow soon enough. This console is the console that drains my money and I like it for some reason. I have easily between psone, PSP, PSM ,psn and vita retail games more than 200 games. So yeah. The attach rate it's keeping the console alive and will keep it in this status for the entire generation.

I may just my PS+ run out, too. I hardly ever play any of the free games, and I'm sick of constantly seeing failed save uploads on my PS4 because the storage space is full. 1GB is ridiculous with some of the file sizes saves have.

PS+ definitely needs to increase the storage limit for cloud saves. It's pretty ridiculous now. I don't mind the monthly games because usually there's at least one game I want to check out.

Started up Tears to Tiara 2. Dunno why I didn't start this sooner.

I had PS+ for a month again because I actually saved more money subbing for the Golden Week sale than not buying it for a month. I hated how it messed with my download list filling it with a bunch of old ass PS3 games I barely ever heard about, let alone played. I'm very glad to not have that plus anymore.

You are such a positive guy ... Nothing against you but your posts are a reminder of what baekshi used to write. I mean its like you guys only see the empty part of the glass. Again, nothing against you and of course there is freedom of speech here unless we are talking about certain banned games

Speaking of PS+, Super Exploding Zoo is great, I'm loving it so far. Too bad you need to turn off the wifi to launch the game on Vita, but after that it works fine.

I'm just joining in with the four or five people ahead of me who don't like PS Plus, friend.

I actually used to love it just because of the sales and pretty much ignored the IGC, which outside of the first month when it happened never struck me as anything particularly special. I kept getting Plus on and off because of the sales until they announced it was needed for playing online with the PS4, at which point I dropped it.

I got it again at the end of April because it actually saved me a few bucks, and it annoyed me by adding even more junk to my crowded download list. I can only imagine how bad that must be for someone who has had the service every month and downloads everything for all three platforms. I was annoyed by it and it only added...fifty things to it?

It's a service I don't like paying for and I'm glad I'm pretty much done with it. I'll get it again if it ever saves me money on sales, but that's not going to be a common occurence. There's no negativity here, only savings.

Joining in on the PS+ talk, I've been thinking of letting my PS+ run out as well to be honest.

The PS+ games we get hardly interest me at all, would rather get the type of games Japan gets. Haven't played any of the recent games, I think the last one I played was when we got Rogue Legacy in February. Cloud saves are pretty useful for me on Vita since I have to delete games often and backing them up to my PC or whatever is too much extra work to bother with. Don't have a PS4 yet though so don't know about the whole storage size restriction thing. The only sale I found the PS+ discounts worthwhile was the Golden Week sale.

Only reason I'll maybe end up keeping it is because it's required for PS4 multiplayer..

I have tons of PS+ games I've never played. It doesn't bother me -- I've paid between 15-30 for every year I have.

But even if I paid 50, I wouldn't care. First, I save a lot on PS+ sale discounts. So right there I've cut the annual fee down significantly.

But even that doesn't matter -- as long as I get, say, 3 games a year I really want to play [for example, Binding of Isaac, or Resogun], that's what, $10-15 dollars a game I would have gladly spent that ps+ saved me. Sure, I don't own BoI, but whatever, I plat'd it, put tons of hours into it, and don't need to own it thanks to ps+.

That means every single other game other than those 3 or so (which amounts to dozens upon dozens) is gravy, and every dollar I save due to ps+ discounts is even more gravy.

I'll never understand the negativity if there is a 'bad month' or three... it really only takes a couple great games to make it all worth it, and then you have so many other games that might be an unexpected gem [like this months Skulls of the Shogun].

This x 1000. I make my money back multiple times over on discounts alone, if there's a game I want in any given month it's almost as if they're paying me to take it.

People whine, and I just laugh. Logic for the win.

Shizuka

I don't know, it's not really whining. Most games don't fit my taste, I haven't been playing the PS+ games from the last four to five months, I can't get nice deals for living outside the US, which means U$50 with a horrible exchange rate, I don't use the PS+ cloud save anymore, I don't buy retail games on the PSN, which means the huge discounts we get, I don't take advantage.

Lots of reasons right there, all legitimate ones for my own person.

I couldn't believe one of the best games ever made is going to be free on PS+ at launch. That's another $15 I'll not have to spend because of this service.

Weird. I played last night and it worked fine.
Long as hell load time though at the start.

I own PS+ simply because I need it to play online on my PS4. I take it as a subscription of sorts, and the free stuff is a nice bonus. Sometimes I get the occasional deal. Idk, the price I pay for it, gets paid off on its own throughout the year with the few purchases I make. For those without a PS4, I'd agree that other than having the cloud save feature, there isn't much besides the deals every now and then.

I agree with you; while I don't always enjoy the games PS+ gives out, their is always one game every month that I sit down with for a few minutes and say "Man, that was a nice game :)." That alongside getting some genuine gems (2014 was really great for this, as I got to play DmC, Tomb Raider, and other games I really enjoyed playing though :D) and playing some games really surprised me (Kick and Fennick just came out of nowhere on Plus and the result was fantastic; great 2.5D Platform that felt really original gameplay wise and looked great on the Vita).

While the more recent months haven't been super great, the PS+ deals more then make up for that, as I got some great tittles at great prices the past few years (if it wasn't for Plus...my game library would decrease a good 30-40%).

I also have to many games myself (owning at least about 240+ tittles)....and I only beat not even 40-60 0f them :l.
My backlog is immense XD

So I downloaded the 15GB Elder Scrolls Online patch yesterday. Played some today, took a break. I boot my PS4 to play some more, it starts to download the patch again. I go into information on the game, it says I'm on version 1.00. Has anyone had this happen before? I noticed that the save file couldn't upload because I guess my cloud save storage was full, so I deleted some stuff off of there to make room and uploaded that, but it didn't retroactively help anything obviously. I tried deleting the patch and restarting the PS4 and a bunch of other variants of that kind of workaround, but no luck. Would love to know if the cloud storage thing is what did it or if my PS4 is just being stupid, because that's kind of fucking annoying.

Some quickie reviews of games I played between Valhalla Knights 3 and (now) Operation Abyss:

-------

Frozen Synapse Prime - loved it on pc. love it even more on vita, though since i already played it it's not as 'amazing' as it was the first time. highly recommended for any fan of tactics (breaching, etc).

-----------

Krinkle Krusher -- this is an 'action' tower defense game. Monsters come at your from the top of the screen (the field is about 3 screens in length, it's easy to flip from area to area).

You attack them with various swipes -- to the right makes a wall of fire, tapping is lightning, holding is ice, to the left is a mud trench, etc. Each spell has it's own mana limit / recharge rate, and you can eventually power them all up. Various enemies have elemental affinities, and will be hurt extra, or double in size, if you use the right/wrong element.

It's got a difficultly spike at the beginning because you need to 3 star ten levels to open the upgrade room, and then need more stars to buy actual upgrades. Overall, the game remains fairly challenging throughout without being frustrating - on some of the hard levels they really mix up elemental enemies into large groups, so figuring out how to take them out without powering too many up gives you a run for your money.

one potential issue - -Some trophies don't seem to be popping for me, but i might be wrong.

It's... decent? $2 or less would be about where I put it if it sounds mildly interesting to you.

-------------------

Race the Sun

Basically an artsy, bottom to top moving endless runner (where most movement is left/right and it feels more like a topdown shmup w/o any bullets) with a really cool vibe. Complete challenges like most mobile games, you can use ramps (or jump powerups) to get to special areas...

It's actually pretty darn difficult, but the kind of game you can get into zen mode at if you play long enough.

Recommended, I think. I'm not sure i'll ever invest the time into it that it demands to master it... but I could see people really enjoying doing so.

I was bored and asked a few devs on twitter for news on ports or release dates and actually got a few replies

Looks like Spooky Squid games is considering porting They Bleed Pixels to PS4/Vita. This is in no way a confirmation, but they said they want to do it and are currently looking at the best way to make it happen.

Also asked for a release date for Astebreed PS4 and news is coming "sooner than you think", which makes me guess it'll be at E3 or something.

Yeah, if you have a PS4 and want to play online at all, PS+ is more essential. The games feel like more of a bonus then. I just wait for the full year subscription card to be at a cheap price at some point during the year and buy one in preparation.

That said, the discounts and occasional free game that I'm actually interested in also help to make PS+ worth it for me.

I think in the end the monthly cost of PS+ is negligible, even if it's only for cloud saves, extra discounts and the 1 or 2 halfway decent free games there are in a month. I have no complaints about the service.
