What's the pros and cons to the Atelier Vita games that's currently on sale? I'm interested in them, but I'm worried they'll be too cute and overly focused on sexualizing the girls in the game. Usually an all female cast is a red flag for me, but the art style is what got my attention.

I've been playing Totori, so my opinions are based on that. Can't speak for the other entries myself. I'm not too far in, but so far there really hasn't been any over sexualization, besides the standard "girl armor" and fanservice shots from behind during attack animations. And it certainly isn't fully female cast, I think 3 of the playable characters are male. From what I have seen, it is more about being cute and less about being sexual, but that could change.

Gameplay wise, it is pretty unique. General premise best I can describe is that everything you do uses "time", such as battling, gathering, crafting, traveling or resting. Goal is to progress the story and complete quests without "running out of time". Ironically, walking around a town or area, or putting the game down and actually wasting time is the only thing that doesn't use in game "time". Battle system is simple and turn based, with mobs being visible and generally avoidable if you want to avoid them. A big focus is the crafting system, or alchemy, where you go out and gather items from gather points or killing monsters, and combine them to make the things required for quests as well as items and equipment like healing potions. Things you gather have varying grade, and as expected using better materials nets better items, which get you better quest rewards. Your main character actually sucks at combat, so these items are vital to survive.

Man, I realized now why I couldn't find many good impressions of the game before I bought it, its pretty tough to explain. I definitely did not do it justice. I've found the cycle of explore, gather, craft repeat to be fun and satisfying, but if you are mostly about combat in a turn based RPG that isn't really where this game is best. Gah, maybe someone else will do a better job helping you than I just did.

I just checked by switching between them and as far as I can tell, custom just allows you to pinch to change the size of the window, but nothing was cut off. Aspect ratio just blocks you from zooming past when the window hits the top and bottom. Switching between normal and custom didn't change what I was able to see in the window at all, should've been easy to notice since I used landmarks for top and bottom. Wish I could take screenshots of PSone games on vita!

I was fine with the screen size on vita for Crash, but the controls just weren't there for me, that was my major problem.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but the aspect ratio option checked, the emulator doesn't stop me at all from zooming too far ( '°_°)

One thing that disturbed me a little when I bought the games during this sale is the screenshots presented on the store page. Don't get me wrong, some dubious content is apparently present in the game, and I wouldn't advocate to hide what a given game is containing, but...
The fucking two first shots of Totori show a little girl in swimsuit ?
The third shot of Meruru is a panty shot ?
It's like the person in charge of the store page is trolling the games.

Atelier doesn't really sexualize its characters. They're just cute games about cute girls doing cute things.

Those Totori swimsuit costumes were DLCs bundled with the game at launch (not sure if they're still included). Putting them on actually made the game run a bit smoother because of the simple nature of the costumes compared to Totori's more complex default costume. That's the only reason I use it, but you can completely ignore it. As for the Meruru... Yeah, that's just trolling. Don't expect the usual Japanese fan service crap.

You know what? Fuck it, I don't give a shit anymore if Muramasa comes to the IGC anymore. I'm buying it. RIGHT NOW!

I was holding out too a little, for some silly reason. But you know what? I'm doing the same thing. DID the same thing. Done the same thing. Bingbangboom. I'll be cool if it goes to IFC, they can have my monies.

Attaboys!

And man, had no idea on the bolded (never changed her clothes because it's just too out of the way). I'll try it when I decide to play it again.

I usually like to quote my helpers out when giving thanks, but there's so much this time! Thanks a bunch everyone. I think I'm ready to make my Golden Week purchases now.

That's what I was referencing lol. That picture is completely true though.

Oh I'm totally cool with the content (well I didn't play the games, that could change), it's really how the store page is set up that annoyed me. Like someone got the worst things one could show and went with it.
I'm fairly certain the series is good and not over-sexualizing, what I don't understand is how you could have these games and go with swimswuit / swimsuit / pantyshot hurr durr.

I have to say though, if you want a game about cute girls doing cute things the atelier games are probably the most "cute girls doing cute things" game out there right now.

Also regarding the store page screenshots, I'm always amused that this is put on there. Is this screen supposed to show us how shit the game looks?

i kinda like how fast the thread is moving <3
It's May and we are hitting almost 500 posts?

bleh. I kinda want a portable Xenoblade experience

Do you think we'll see a FFX|X-2 HD sale for the Vita soon?

Isn't it a good seller ? Maybe at the end of the year or early next year with the traditional Square sale, but I don't see it happening soon.
Keep in mind that I speak from the depths of my ass here.

That picture is perfect hah. And there is something so satisfying with these games when you finally figure something out that allows for optimization. For example, during Totori prologue, when I realized I could just collect 20 rock salt in one go and turn in the quest over and over for fast profit as opposed to accepting, collecting, returning. Obvious, maybe, but satisfying nonetheless. Enjoying the simple combat too, the game is complex enough without hard combat...

Odd...EU Gaffers didn't say that happened to them with their retail copies of the Jak Collection...

Either way at least you got 'free' versions of three awesome games :).
I formulated myself the wrong way. They aren't in my download list and they don't turn up as free. =/

It reminded me of the Recettear since that was the first time I really laughed hard at the what I expected - got picture. lol

I only like threads moving fast when the post are of a good quality and consisting of mostly one liners. I say it's doing a good job with speed and post so I agree that this thread is doing great!

I'm not sure of the sales, but if it's as good as I'm thinking, I wouldn't expect a good sale on it until the holidays.

Maybe during SE's annual Final Fantasy sale next year. I still have yet to start them with Demon Gaze taking up most of my time and BL2 and SSD coming in next 2 weeks.

eh. SSD is coming in the next 2 weeks?! hmm. maybe I'll just wait then. I kinda wanted to get FFX|X-2 HD on Vita so I can convince more of my friends to buy a Vita

Amazon had it for $30 last week.

gah.. Digital only for me :X

think it did pretty well!

I can't remember what I wanted to say ><

anyone else tried that PSOne/PSP emulation thing again - I'll give it a go later myself... playing it on normal doesn't do the screen justice :/

I think people really need to give JRPGs a chance. look past the fanservice elements (I do agree it can get overwhelming), some parts are really awesome. For one, I like the Battle systems in most of them... and the storylines (some are absurd.. but hey it's fun!)

maybe I'm just wanted to say - looking at Mario Golf and Kirby Triple Deluxe (these games just got released on 3DS) - i like those games, that allow you to just pick-up and play in bite-sizes... but seriously that 3DS hardware is awful :/

OH YES

where can I get Folklore and DS Chrono Trigger - Amazon prices aren't pretty

This is starting to really bother me.

First it was Hustle Kings, and now The Sly Trilogy.

I got the Sly Trilogy on retail disc and have played it on my PS3, but it's neither on my download list or listed as free in PlayStation Store on my Vita.

I'm using the exact same PSN id for all of my platforms, and cross-buy have worked perfectly on my PS4 with games such as SoundShapes, flow and Escape Plan.

Yet I'm having trouble getting it to work between PS3/Vita versions.

I'm located in EU. What am I doing wrong?

hmmm. was Sly Trilogy promised to have Cross-Buy for the Vita?

Yeah, disc versions are out. No Cross-Buy. I would imagine due to the price variation between the retail versions, it'd cannibalize sales of the Vita cart.

I don't know what's going on with Hustle Kings, but I think Sly Trilogy is only cross-buy with the digital version on EU PSN. Your retail disc is the problem.

According to these comments, Eurogamer confirmed it's cross-buy.

I'm really confused by this cross-buy feature. I know I couldn't get Jak & Daxter for PS3 even though I had the Vita version but I should be able to with Hustle Kings and The Sly Trilogy, yet it doesn't work.

Maybe it's only the digital version of Sly Trilogy (PS3) which is cross-buy compatible with the Vita version?

Has there ever been a case where cross buy worked with physical discs? In those cases (like ACIV and CoD: Ghosts between PS3/PS4 you had to pay an upgrade fee and then get access to the digital version).

Yeah, don't buy retail if you want to take advantage of cross buy is really all I can say.

Oh, so Cross-Buy are only for digital versions?

Oh well, no biggie.

At least it would be awesome if I could get Hustle Kings to work on PS3.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time

The difference between Sly Trilogy and those are the release dates. The three compatible disc games all had specific branding and hooks related to Cross-Buy. Sly Trilogy PS3 launched years before Vita was out, so it has none of that. I guess SCEE is just using your download list as validation for the digital version. It's not something they had to do, as SCEA doesn't bother.

PSASBR and Sly 4 worked with the retail disc. Sony probably can't enable it retroactively, which is why later Vita ports don't support cross-buy with retail disc.

Edit: Beaten for the second time in less than 10 minutes. That's cool too.

Yeah, don't buy retail if you want to take advantage of cross buy is really all I can say.

More games should do like PSASBR - insert disc into PS3, activate Vita version via XMB, transfer it to the Vita.
Weird to think it's not the same for Sly, being both 1st party.

edit: Takao's post made it all clear and not weird.

Huh makes sense. Didn't know there were any physical cross buy stuff. Thanks for the info.

But PS All-Stars were only cross-buy with the PS3 version right? Because I have the retail Vita version and can't get the PS3 version for free.

They had me until 2-player co-op. Still not a deal breaker for me though.

Ouch. I'm officially out now. I was thinking something like a 4 Player GAF Night would've been a blast. Of course the graphics wasn't going to be on par, and the frame rate could possibly be shaky for a game so big, but the online experience is a big part of the game. If that can't be on par with the other versions, maybe this wasn't the best game to port over to the Vita.

It's already a late port, but it's also an inferior late port...

I'm glad the 3DS hardware doesn't bother me lol. I can go back and forth between 3DS and Vita no problem :P

Mario Golf looks like fun. I'm hoping there's a Wii U version too (like Mario Goof GC and GBA) so local play can be easier and more relaxing on the big screen. As for Kirby, I hope it remains hard like The Amazing Mirror and stays far away from Epic Yard and it's LEGO games like system.

Unfortunate, but all the best if it runs decently I guess. Playing 100+ hours solo might have something to do with my opinion.
Glad to see gyro aiming is in.

Ouch. I'm officially out now. I was thinking something like a 4 Player GAF Night would've been a blast.

Then there's that. I avoided MP after a few games where everyone just wanted to rush. Then the fact that farming solo (treasure room) held me better results than farming in a group just made me a solo player.
But with fellow GAFfers things could be different.

Indeed.

Jonny, why is that girl naked in your game!?

Mom, it makes the game run smoother, honest

10 years ago, my mom asked me why I was playing "girly games".

The game I was playing???
Xenosaga Episode 1. (It was at the start of the game, KOS-MOS simulator thing).

I really want Frozen to be in Kingdom Hearts 3

pretty excited for Borderlands 2... I hope they add in 4player co-op next time. hmm

"Subnative res / 2 player coop is absolutely the best for our game"
"As we’ve got more familiar with the hardware, and also, looking at what we wanted from the game, we decided that subnative, sub-30 frames per second is absolutely the best thing, because what that allows us to do is to deliver the full borderlands 2 experience that you will ever have seen in a portable system."
“It’s allowed us to create some of the biggest open world areas you will ever see in a fps game, with the most visually-dense environments, as well as a full 2 player coop system which allows us to make engaging, satisfying experience. It’s allowed us to push all those various areas.”

To be fair, Borderlands 2 was chugging all the time on PS3 when playing splitscreen coop so it's hard doing much better with weaker hardware. Still, I wonder who the audience for this port is though. Late port, expensive, performs worse than the console version with watered down coop.

Not sure what they were thinking.

It's native res.

Do we actually know that for sure? I remember one guy mentioning it on Twitter, and the news just spread from there.

We do now that we have screenshots to confirm.

They took a sub-720p PS3 game and ported it as native res game on Vita. Hats off to Iron Galaxy, that's quite a feat.

I'm up to the second set of tournaments in Everybody's Golf and it's still not much more interesting than the golf minigame in GTA V. Not sure whether I should push on.
