Pokémon Go |OT| As in "Go Outside"

Has anyone else noticed the distance tracking on eggs is incredibly inaccurate?

Walked approx 3km today and I'm currently at 1.75km on a 2km egg I put in incubation at the start of the walk.

It's probably from how the GPS works. If it gets behind you, and then zooms to catch up, it might go too fast to register as distance traveled.

Yeah if you don't need the evolution or the candies, save them to evolve a bunch of e.g. Pidgeys, Ratatas or the likes which only need 12/25 candies each until you get a Lucky Egg and do all the evolutions simultaneously. Even better if it's a pokemon you haven't evolved yet, that will net you a cool 2 * (500 + 600) = 2200 xp per new evolution. Pretty good.

I really have to wonder if they're going to let us keep all the progress we've made in non "launch" territories yet, because people are going to have a real shit time dealing with these few super high level guys that pretty much own every gym around me.

It's not fun seeing the same username with the top pokemon at every gym. There's pretty much no hope of breaking in outside of dropping some hard cash to power level myself.

Well if it's anything like Ingress then teaming up with other people is the key. I don't know though, haven't done any combat yet.

Is there a trick to using incense? After I tap it the second time, it just goes back into my bag and doesn't get used.

piggybacking off your question, is it worth using incense at level 7? I still have the few the game starts you with, should I save them for later? Also I apparently either found an extra egg incubator or got it as a level up reward. sucks that the consumable type break after 3x

Was out for a walk and I got a text from my brother (never really played a Pokemon game in his life) saying 'where's the nearest Pokestop?'. We went on a two and a bit hour walk, met loads of people who were all helping each other and after running into the same couple three/four times we found them outside our house trying to catch a Seel.

I fucking love this game, it's becoming a cultural touchstone so far in the UK.

lol can't play because my trainer club account needs verifying. Forgot to do it in the 2 days and now I have to wait for them to send a reconfirmation email.

For some reason whenever I throw with the circle at it's smallest I never get "nice, great, etc" but when the circle is near the biggest I almost always get the compliments. I thought I was supposed to try to throw when the circle was small... I'm so confused.

7 pokemon ready for evolution and 6 eggs that will be ready to hatch at the same time... Gonna time this out perfectly with my lucky egg :)

Small circle is best chance of them not escaping. You get the compliments when you land the ball perfectly within the colored circle so its much easier to get those bonus experience compliment things when the circle is large

Eh, even with "other" people around, you still personally have to fight 1v1 against the gym, and if you can't even make it over the first pokemon, you don't have much hope.

Seeing this guy with near 2000CP pokemon in every single gym around me, he must've dropped some serious cash.

You need to hit the Pokémon when the ball is inside the green circle. Rougly I think it's like this:

Nice: Hit larger than 50% of max
Great: Hit smaller than 50% of max
Excellent: Hit at like 5% of max

Argh I can't wait anymore. I have a trustworthy source for the APK. If I install this sucker on my Android phone now, will I be able to use my save when the real deal releases in Europe? Does it update automatically? What are the cons?
No cons. Just do it, lol. The FAQ in the op has a link to the apkmirror if you need it

Teaming up with people makes a big difference, but if you really dedicate yourself to it you can basically win by attrition alone too. The game heavily favors attackers, by design.

Incorrect, if you attack at the same time as others, it will team up groups of 2 :)
and if you can't even make it over the first pokemon, you don't have much hope
Well that's true, if you can't defeat the lowest Pokemon in the gym in a 6v1, you have no hope and shouldn't be attacking it. But if you can beat even just that first Pokemon, you will lower the gym's prestige and can keep at this. Basically if you have the capability of beating the strongest Pokemon in the gym 6v1, and enough potions and revives, you can win by attrition.

I think the key is to get it into the decreasing circle. The smaller it is the better, but getting it inside is most important. As far as I understand.

The further you get in the game, the harder catching stuff is, so you want to save your Lucky Eggs until you can use them properly. At a minimum, I'd have 45 potential evolutions lined up before using a Lucky Egg boost, which you'll probably have naturally by lv14 if you've just been collecting stuff.

This distance tracking and server issues are kind of ruining this for me. I went for a 4 mile run last night (in 90° heat!) with the game running and it didn't track any of it.

You get those nice great excellent by hitting the area of the inner coloured circle with the pokeball, hence it being easier to get them when it's at its largest. I don't know which method is best for catching though, I just go for smallest and dont get the bonus exp for the nice, great etc.

Is there anywhere you can read about decent levelling strategies? I'm completely at a loss as to wether or not it's better to power up or evolve.

So it's better to go smaller even without the compliments? Assuming goal is to catch difficult pokemon of course. Your clarifying definitely makes me need to start going for the compliments on the garbage pokemon though.

I'm so jealous of the apartment complex down the street. They have a Pokestop there that has been lured for like 12 hours straight and I'm just outside its range.

Was the screen on the entire time? Don't think it registers properly with the screen off.

There is a little girl sitting on top of a huge slide here in the park using a lure every 30 minutes. She's like queen of the playground.

From what I can tell you should evolve first so you can know that the pokemon you're getting has good moves.

For leveling, go catch a shitton of pokemon and hang on to them. Transfer them until you have enough to evolve them, but don't evolve yet. Then get a Lucky Egg from I believe level 7 or 8 for the first one. Use Lure + Incense + Lucky Egg to spawn tons of pokemon and get double xp for all of them. Now remember all the trash pokemon you collected? You're going to evolve all of them, especially Pidgey. Pidgey only costs 12 candies to evolve. Mass evolution and catching during a Lucky Egg is how you farm XP>

How would you guys feel if the distance tracking system was changed to a pedometer based on the phone's gyroscope? It would be better but you could more easily abuse it, idk

I prefer it how it is. It's kind of the point of the game to get people going outside and walking around.

Not good. It would be great for other games more specifically focused on fitness, but being able to walk the distance on a treadmill doesn't really fit with the game IMO, let alone the actual abuse potential.

I don't mind it the way it is except that it needs to be more stable/more generous if that's the only way to fix it, and also more transparent about what the speed limit really is.
Wait, it says there is no advantage to powering up your unevolved pokemon before evolving them...?

I thought that the stronger the (for example) Pidgey the stronger the evolved forms can become.

So this is not the case at all?
Correct, that is not the case at all.

There may be an advantage to powering up an unevolved Pokemon if, say, you don't have enough candy to evolve them but could really use that Pokemon in attack/defense at that moment. I've done this multiple times. But there's no stat/power benefit to powering up before versus after evolution; everything has to do with your Trainer Level.

Yes. For tougher pokemon and ones I have not caught before I aim to get the smaller circle and I go for the bonus experience on the lower tier pokemon that I get a ton of.

I'd prefer it. I think it would work better for me. Well, if it can at least work with the screen off.

Go for it, your account is server-side so no issues. APKmirror has a legit version and I'm pretty sure once it releases officially in your region it'll show up in your Play Store listing and update fine if/when the devs update the app. After all, the APK is the official version.

Just installed.

No I don't think it is the case. If you look, the little half-circle meter telling you how leveled up the pokemon is will stay exactly the same after it evolves, it just has higher potential CP. So if you're pidgey is at 75% max CP, Pidgeotto will also be at 75% max CP just with higher numbers. The only benefit i could see is if it is cheaper stardust wise to power him up before evo vs after evo.

I'd be happy if it say, hooked in to Google Fit on Android, so the walking could count when in the background - without impacting the rest of the game as it's already being done. And if iOS has similar APIs.

Basically if it works in the background I wouldn't mind, even if the rest of the game didn't yet.

Hm I mean, I don't think there's any reason to assume changing it to that would make it work with the scren off. There's no correlation between using GPS vs. gyro/accelerometer and being able to have the screen off/phone locked. Apps can utilize either one with the phone locked, Pokemon Go just doesn't.
Just installed.

Welcome to the hunt.

Managed to get a few pokestops during work today.

RIP rural players. No balls for us :(

I love the app and have some pokestops near my house, but right now I'm at work with 4 pokeballs and 13 greatballs. I couldn't refill any supplies or catch any pokemon yesterday due to server issues. Now all I can do is let me app run while the gps is jumping around to hopefully hatch some eggs while I work.

There's a street corner that has been lured every time I have see it since the weekend. They must be making a killing on selling lures in this game.
this still gets me www.luresquad.com

Yep exactly

I believe the stardust cost is based only on how much prior has been invested.

Well then, it seems i have been stalling evolutions for no reason.

Thanks for the info!
