WHAT THE HELL?

You can't buy coins in this game? Goddamn it Game Freak. That's Strike Two! First you take away my room decorations, now the coins?!?
not to mention that they kept Donphan/phanpy exclusive to Gold.

In the originals the japanese version of Gold had Donphan, but for English versions they switched him to Silver exclusive, but this time they kept him exclusive for HG and now SS is two exclusives short of being even with HG

Who are the best non-trade HM slaves now? Would it mean my HM slaves would occupy three slots instead of 2?

Well, that's OK.

You'll just owe me one. Let me hatch this Scyther egg and I'll put the metal coat on him.

Do you care about nature/ability at all? care for a level 1 scizor?

I was actually planning on breeding the sycther myself for a bit until i get a ditto so no need.

Also, what would you like in the future that i can start going for?

Say what?

Diamond and Pearl had a glitch in the Global Trading System that allowed you evolve pokemon that normally only evolved via trade to evolve without trading them.

Put up a pokemon like Kadabra or Machoke up for trade in GTS and then search for pokemon like Bidoof that you can trade for easily. After you've traded for the it go back to Status and choose to remove your Machoke/Kadabra/whatever from the trading block and when you get it back it evolves.

edit:beaten

its hard to do now also because stupid fucks are asking for level 100's for shit sentret or caterpie

saw a shiny Ninetails up for trade asking for a Nidoqueen. Got all excited then saw Nidoqueen level 9 or lower :/

Wait what? I just thought HG got Phanphy/Donphan this time while SS got Teddiursa/Ursaring. SS is missing mons?

just do the coin game in goldenrod and trade in 200 coins for a lvl 15 abra then level it once to evolve into kadabra and stay with it or put it up for trade in GTS but ask for something stupid so no one gets it and then seek pokemon and get some random easy to get one and, if the glitch still works, you acquiring the easy to get pokemon counts as Kadabra being traded when you remove from the the system.

I HATE that game. The best I've ever done is a 3 coin payout. I always hit the Voltorbs. I spent an hour with it and only have about 15 coins. The idea of getting 200 coins makes me want to kill myself.

well, i can trade you the scyther and a ditto (holding the metal coat).

I'm not sure what I'd want in the future as my Pearl is pretty fleshed out, but I suppose a Pinsir or clefairy/jigglypuff

Is there some sort of incredible beginner's-guide to becoming competitive? I want to breed, IV, EV, NRG, nature-obsess, all that good stuff, I just don't know how or what to do first or what to remember or look out for :(

There's a thread for it somewhere around here.

PM'ed you

In your bag/backpack goto key items and find the Pal pad. Open it and you should see an option for "My Friend Code."

If you don't have a pal pad, goto the basement of any pokecenter and talk to one of the ladies down there and they'll hook you up.

I have finally played some, and I am quite impressed with some of the polish and attention to detail. The Pokewalker sounded super silly, but the more I think about it the more it seems like a really clever idea. I liked dabbling with microcontrollers and such in college, and I'm impressed by the features and minigames that they added to it. It's cool that they actually put an entire timestamped story and description about how your day went. It's cool that you can get items and pokemon.

It's neat that when you talk to your pokemon following you it says stuff about the area, like in bellsprout tower.

I haven't gotten where you can use a second mapped button (I think I heard you can despite what the manual says), but that's good. Auto-running is good, but that's one of the weird things...as far as I can tell you can ONLY turn it on or off with the touchscreen. If you're running pressing B does not make you walk for precision. How could they overlook something like that? :(

I haven't tried playing without animations yet, but it SEEMS a little faster, and the interfaces are overall relatively smooth so I feel like they may have paid a bit of attention to usability this time around.

Hearing people say you can't buy coins (AND the obnoxious cheating games from previous versions are harder?) is really sad. Why would they do that, again?

*edit* Wait, if you can't buy coins, what happens when you run out? And (as my friend said), how do the casinos make money? :p

I've heard that pokemon that are taken out on the pokewalker dont evolve or learn moves if they gain a level. Will that happen once they transfer back into the game? Will they just not evolve/learn that move?

When they gain a level in the Pokewalker, they won't learn a move for that level (if they were supposed to). That's it, it doesn't affect them outside of the pokewalker.

They'll evolve one level later. Dunno about the moves, but I'd hope Nintendo would be smart to have the move bump up to the next level like evolution and give the player the option to skip/learn it.

Do EVs apply to the Pokewalker battles? :lol

Also speaking of EVs I'm in need of some refreshing, they only take effect when the Pokemon gains a level, right?

And once it hits the max EVs it doesn't matter what you battle unless you use those special berries right

I thought DS games couldn't support WPA encryption in the first place. Do new DS games support WPA?

DSi mode games can support WPA, since the DSi itself supports it. Regular DS games, however, can't use it even on the DSi because they have no programmed awareness of the DSi tech. Presumably DSi enhanced games can do the same thing since they have DS and DSi runtimes.

I've never even heard of "DSi mode games" so does it really come as a surprise to anyone that HG/SS doesn't support WPA?

We're dealing with Nintendo. You should know that they live in the past. Lol.

They are added to the total, but you won't see immediate effects until you level up. Once all the EV's are maxed and allocated to w/e then you can battle w/e and not worry about it.

I just had to switch over my router back to WEP. God i hate this. Nintendo couldnt go the extra step concerning this? I BOUGHT THE DSi nintendo!! IM LOYAL.

I think this means all my consoles that are on wifi will be fucked up too.

I just want to pop in to say that I spent far too much time on the coin game in Goldenrod. I knew there had to be a way to win consistently, and once I figured out the system, I had a sense of accomplishment I'd not had in a good, long while.

My new BAMF dratini might have had something to do with that.

Anyone know a website that I can learn some of the competitive stuff from that isn't Smogon?

Smogon's articles are so big and confusing it makes my head spin. :<

Any reason in particular I shouldn't use Rare Candies on either a Pokemon whose EVs I don't care about or a Pokemon with maxed EVs?

Gravijah said:
Nope. But I'd save 'em, makes checking IVs easier.
Specifically, store up 49 of them. That way you'll be able to easily calculate the IVs of newly hatched monsters. (At level 50, their stat boosts are exactly half of their IVs over their base stats, adjusting for nature). Feed a new 'mon 50 rare candies, check their IVs and soft reset :D

Be honest with me people, how big of a difference % wise, does having a pokemon of equal level with a slightly higher IV and EVs matter in battle? I havent played against another person in freaking years but i remember them just being a match weakness type switch fest. Are tournament battles less like that where these kind of stats against neutral types seriously matter?

Well, the main thing that saved me a lot of headache was me realizing that you don't have to clear all the 1s to pass the level.

You can usually use the totals to determine what's left in a given row or column of the puzzle, and once you've figured out that only 1s or voltorbs* are left, you can safely not flip them but still have an idea of what they are for later.

*henceforth, "bombs"

Here's how I usually go about solving one:

1. Look for any lines with zero bombs. Flip at will.

1a. Any row or column where the total given plus the number of bombs adds up to five is all 1s and bombs. I use the memo feature to mark them as o and 1, since it doesn't really matter which they are at this point, and to remind myself not to flip unless I have a good reason to, i.e., I figure out that it's definitely a 1 later.

2. Any particularly large numbers that coincide USUALLY (not always) don't have a bomb. Flip the intersection of two large-ish numbers, then work from there. (Sorry if this causes you to lose; sometimes the game is an a-hole.)

3. Once you've flipped a tile, look at the total for reference, and then figure out what's left. For instance, if you flipped a 3 in a row that has a total of 6 and one bomb, then you don't need to worry about flipping any more in that row. However, if you flip a 2 in a row that has a total of 6 and one bomb, you need to do a bit more work because you don't know where the other two is (although you would be able to deduce that the row contains 2, 2, 1, 1, bomb, you wouldn't know the order...)

4. ...until you look at the other direction for the row you're in, in this case a column. You have to keep working back and forth, thinking vertically and horizontally and back again, until you've narrowed it down as much as you can.

5. Usually, the first four steps will get you to solve the puzzles on level one and two, but the ones after that tend to leave you with parts where you're forced to guess. Personally, I seem to end up with four tiles left in a box arrangement, with two bombs and two good numbers. If that's the case for you, you have a fifty/fifty chance of not getting a bomb, and then you can figure out which one to do next. You can always just quit at this point to keep your coins earned so far.
I always choose wrong when it's fifty/fifty, unless there was a detail I missed that proves which one is useful. Worst luck in the world, I have.

Good luck!

I hope this helped a little.

I don't know if this is true, but I heard this was taken out to avoid an E10 rating for gambling. E10's did not exist when R/B/Y/G/S were around so I guess I can buy it. Kinda silly it would bump up the rating but I wouldn't put it past the ESRB.

That actually makes complete sense.

I believe a DSi only game has shipped or will ship shortly this year, but it's an obscure 3rd party title.

You can tell them apart because the boxart specifically says DSi. DSi games can, apart from WPA, make use of other good parts of the system, like the cameras, extra memory, and doubled clockspeed.

I'm a little surprised Nintendo hasn't immediately gone the GBC route in terms of mixing runtimes, (remember Silver/Gold GBC) but I suppose they aren't interested in confusing the market right now.

EDIT: Hey, just to clarify: can we trade with Platinum right away, or is it another end-of-game situation? I'd like to somehow start with my event Jirachi...

IVs can give you a stat disparity of up to 31 points in any stat. For some strategies (ones dependent on speed or HP, for instance) this can make or break a team. With natures, the difference is +/- 10% and maxed out EVs in a stat vs no EVs in that stat give you a maximum advantage of 63 points at level 100.

OK, so let's say a monster has a base value in some stat of 100 points. Let's go with best and worst case scenarios.

Best/Worst:

Base stat:

100.....100

Natures +/- 10%:

110.......90

IVs at 31 and at 0:

141.......90

EVs maxed out and rare candied up to level 100:

204.......90

So yeah, it can matter a great deal (competitively, not in-game). Best case scenario stat is more than double the worst case stat.

Okay I think I understand EV training, but how do I know what EV's I'm going to want my Pokemon to raise? And where do I learn what Pokemon to train it against? How do I count EV's and why do I need to "count" them? What's the maximum for each trait?

So much to learn

Also, is someone willing to help me trade my event Pokemon to SS like sometime around now? Someone was willing to do it with me last night but I totally forgot thanks to God of War 3 :(

You need to decide on what strategy you're going to use first. Your strategy will determine where your advantage will lie. A tank or damage sponge will benefit from Def, Sp.Def or HP. A physical sweeper from Atk. A special sweeper from Sp.Atk. An annoyer from Spd, Def, Sp.Def or HP, depending on your strategy.

Usually, it's best to pump most of your EVs into the stat that'll benefit you the most and everything else into something like speed (where even a one point advantage will let you move first).

Well where do I figure out what Pokemon are the best for each stat, and after I figure out my strategy, how do I go about learning what to do to raise those stats? D:
