Pokemon sequel is under development for DS

I cannot even begin to fathom the clusterfuck that will be triple battles.

Ugh, seriously... and I can only imagine how slow a battle like that would be. If it turns out to be true, can't say I'm not surprised, I always had the feeling it would happen eventually. Maybe the B/W battle changes will make it more manageable in the end.

Double battles are faster than single battles because it's difficult to stall when your opponent has twice as much type coverage. This would probably even be more true of triple battles.

With Poketches returning and this new news of excavation/explorer, hopefully the Sinnoh Underground returns as well! And is expanded. Maybe it'll be made integral to the game.

No badges shocks me more than triple battles, although that's a big surprise as well. Wow. These games are gonna shake things up.

Also according to GameSpot, Black and White will be on the E3 show floor.

Could be a big deal if there really are no badges. It sounds small, but something like that could change the whole structure of the story mode.

In fact I was actually kind of hoping there'd be no badges in this one so they'd have more freedom with the plot.

Would be cool if there were actual boss battles, instead of just really strong trainers...then again they've already got a ton of stuff to animate.

I'll be glad if they give badges a rest.
It's been 4 generations and it's a bit boring knowing exactly how the game will progress.

In current tournaments they allow a team of 4 pokemon in double battles resulting in a pair of switches.
So I guess triple battles would be a logical extension with a team of 6 pokemon.

Multi-pokemon battles are actually quite a bit more strategic and are over much faster.
It's a bit closer to standard RPG battles with a party since Pokemon now have to work together on each turn.
It's trickier since you now have many more options on a given turn with 4 moves on each Pokemon.
Also, for many moves you'll have to decide which of the opponent's/your Pokemon to target.
And then you can still swtich any of the three pokemon out for one of the remaining three.

Multi-battles are much more concentrated on the tactics for the moment than on what the overall team matchup is (like single battles).
Some people like it, others get a headache...

Isn't there some kind of official-ish spin off game out there that has triple battles already? Some kind of tech demo maybe? Or have I completely fabricated that in my head? The only reason why triple battles didn't sound outlandish to me was because I think Game Freak has toyed with the idea already.

Agree completely.

Are you thinking of that Battrio game?

Maybe? >_> I dunno.

Focus Sash Explosion Shiftry + 5 ghosts.

One of which is a Focus Sash Explosion Gengar.

But don't moves that effect more than one target get reduced to like 70% power during 2v2 battles? I'd imagine it would increase to something even lower depending on how many pokemon are on the field, kind of like magic in the early Final Fantasy games.

Possible scan is out (go to Pokebeach). Seems to confirm a good amount of the rumors.

They look like Pokemon.

If someone says they're like Digimon, I swear to duckroll...

Yep. In 4th gen doubles, a multi-target move hits with 75% of its full power unless just one target is left.

Makes me wonder how strength, targeting, and retargeting would work in a triples environment. Also makes me wonder how a Follow Me user could survive for more than one turn, among other things.

I think the main reason I like multi-battles is because there is a lot less 'switching' going on. I don't mind a strategic switch every now and then, but in some 'hardcore' matches it can really slow down the flow of the game.

I also like the new Pokemon, but I hope it has an evo-chain and isn't just a standalone useless 'cute' Pokemon like Pachirisu.

I'm still hoping for more evolutions of current Pokemon like Persian and Jynx. In fact if there ends up being an evolved version of Persian I just might do something cool like buy the copy for someone randomly in the OT. I do that sometimes.

I also was going to buy a copy of Brawl for a few people in the Brawl thread if Megaman was in it. Sucks for them.

The mouse guy better evolve into something badass. He'll probably just be another Pachirisu...

Edit: Yeah looks like I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

Stealth Rock switch switch Rapid Spin switch Stealth Rock switch switch switch

The only thing that irks me about potential triple battles is that by the time the Smogon types get around to updating Shoddy Battle for doubles, it will be an obsolete playstyle. A doubles metagame would have never had the proper chance to develop.

Isn't Shoddy it's own game? Why can't they just go on playing that?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, I know jack shit about Shoddy. I just assumed it was a Pokemon battle simulator that you can't even link to the games.

Yeah, it's just an online simulator, but it's useful even to those who prefer to play on the real thing. Since it removes the training aspect, it's easy to quickly make and test a bunch of teams, and there's a wealth of information that is collected from battles played on it. It makes it easy to analyze trends and strategies, and it serves as the basis for all of Smogon's tiering and gives a good idea as to what can be effective on simulator or cartridge play.

None of that applies to double battles, though, as Shoddy has yet to implement them. And that irks me because it means fewer people (especially the more competent players) play and build teams for doubles.

If you look at the scans closely, it looks like a fire type pokemon :o

Edit: nvm it looks like text :/

Wait, really? Has this ever happened in the past?

I was always under the assumption that Game Freak operated on their own schedule, aka Japan first, show it off whenever we feel like it on Pokemon Sunday.

If so... E3 just got a little better! And it was already looking pretty great...

It... can't be:

I play double battles exclusively now but three just seems like too many. I think to make it work they would have to make some serious changes to balance pokemon for triple battles.

Having said that if they find a way to make the battles interesting and balanced i will give it a try.
