Pokemon sequel is under development for DS

Just thinking out loud -

Could a stylus-only overhaul be on the cards - as in Phantom Hourglass / Spirit Tracks?

Would it make gameplay faster?

I hope so. And it'd be nice if it didn't take forever and a half to save "a lot of data."

Maybe a fucking card game in the DS.

Seriously, Pokemon TGC in GBC was cool... and we never got its sequel. :(

Really?

Adding over 300 new monsters to choose from, 2 new types, online battling and trading, EV-training, natures, Pokemon contests, tweakable personality assets through mixing of berries and food, holdable items, more creative evolutions, double-battles, new gym leader types, new HM moves and way to explore the environment, pre-evolutions, Mystery Gift, different types of Pokeballs, breeding and egg moves, Shiny Pokemon, Battle Tower and other battle mini-games, Pokeathalon, day & night Pokemon and events, and other stuff, doesn't constitute as an evolution for the series without breaking the formula?

Two new types were added in the second game, and not one added since. EV-training is some obscure thing that only a minor fraction of the gamers knows about. No matter how much it affects the metagame, it feels like a half-hearted improvement since Nintendo barely acknowledges it. Most of the things you mention aren't utilized by most gamers, only the core gamers who are interested in the metagame. The only things that really add to the game are holding items, double-battles, breeding, and natural abilities. Shinies are a gimmick, HM addition aren't an improvement since any sensible person thinks that HMs ruin the game if anything, pre-evolutions are useless, creative evolutions is opinion, gym leader types are basically taking trainers that use only one type and calling them gym leaders. Contests are not an improvement, they're a distraction. It's like if they added Mario Party-style mini-games to Mario Galaxy 2, it wouldn't be an improvement. Not to say they're bad, but it doesn't improve the game, it just adds to it. Almost nothing you mentioned there was an improvement that warrants giving Nintendo a pat on the back.

Man pokemon green when i saw the sprites in bulbapedia i almost died. We should look for the sprite that looks the furthest from the original design. Mine is mew

Sony should make a pokemon-type clone in 3d on the PS3. It would be wicked.

I'd love a decent Pokemon competitor on ANY system by ANY triple-A developer. I feel like most stopped trying around the middle of the decade.

Call me crazy but I actually like the Green sprites. They don't look as pretty, sure, but they give a much more exotic and sinister look. The latest ones, while better looking, look a lot more cartoony.

Problem is, Pokemon runs on nostalgia. That's not something you can make, and therefore any competition would be missing that factor.

The millions of kids who buy each version are doing so because of nostalgia?

You're wrong on a lot of levels, but the reason I like Pokemon is because monster collecting/raising/battling is awesome and appeals to me at a very basic level. I'd buy any game that worked with that formula.

It's nostalgia for anyone over the age of 18 at this point. Nostalgia and lack of dignity.

Pokemon still rocks though. Want a straight-forward RPG with nearly endless party combinations? Pokemon.

I think that a Paper Mario-esque battle system could fit Pokemon. I love timed-hits!

The most obvious upgrade that I think everyone can agree on is the ability to walk diagonally. I'm still shocked that you can only move 4 directions in a 2010 Pokemon game. Very archaic, indeed.

I also fancy the idea of a Pokemon game that takes place in the past. A new setting could really give the 5th generation a distinct feel and fresh take on Pokemon. That's not to say that I don't love the modern today setting of Pokemon. I do. I just think it would be excellent to see extinct species of Pokemon in a somewhat less technological world.

I don't think you guys get it.

I bought Soul Silver for the nostalgia. And I'll probably put 100+ hours into it (at 98h for Platinum right now, and I haven't had much time to play it since starting in August), so there's clearly something more than nostalgia that keeps me playing :lol

This reminded me that i need faster combat gameplay than D/P/P, please.

^ This.

I play Pokemon because it is still awesome, not because I thought it was awesome when I was 7.

lol the old Geodude sprite was terrible.

Far more than the actual gameplay Pokemon is about the community. I would not play a Pokemon knock off unless it was just as famous just because of other people playing.

Yeah, if you think the anime is canon.

Your problem is that the Pokemon looked just like that in the player guides and pokedexes.

Geodude looks like it got clobbered on the head. :P

Anyway, anyone catch that Entei in the trailer had Bowser's old cry? :D

Unless that originated from somewhere else and Nintendo only then used it later for Bowser?

Speaking of, did Nintendo create Yoshi's old cries as well? DK's ape noises?

So the Gen V games will finally be discussed/revealed in the May issue of Coro Coro (I guess in about a month's time?). I wonder if any media will appear on the internet before then...

Thumbs up! And luckily we get HG/SS on Sunday which will be more than enough to tide us over whil we wait for the gigantic wave of news to hit :D

I guess they were probably waiting for HGSS to come out in the west and for Pokemon Ranger 3 to come out in Japan before ramping up for Gen V. Finally!

Yeah, looks like it'll be pretty exciting.

If worse comes to worst, I'll import the game straight from Japan. It's been a good while since I played a Pokemon game in a language I don't know, I miss that experience.

It's pretty fun playing Pokemon in a language you don't understand :lol

I imported Diamond and Heart Gold. I'll probably be doing the same for 5th gen.

The big question I want answered is if it will be DSi exclusive. God I hope not. No GBA slot would mean transferring over pokemon from GBA games would be MORE painful.

Indeed, its better that HG/SS you can trade gba pokemon over as many as you want each day, tho then sending them from their is a bit of a chore.
