Pokemon sequel is under development for DS

I'm torn between wanting to see bitter tears about it being on the DS and wanting to see bitter tears about it being on the 3DS.

I really can't decide.

I would love it to be on the new system just so that I can rationalize buying the system day one more easily :lol

And it better have a damned Pokewalker.

How do we know this?

To be fair, the original press release/announcement does say that a completely new game for the Nintendo DS is in development, and it's planned to be released in 2010.

Besides implying that it's going to be a "reboot" of the franchise, it's not blatantly mentioned or implied that it's going to be for a new platform.

Maybe "Nintendo DS" is just a placeholder until the 3DS was announced, but I'm not going to speculate on this. :P

At this point, it's looking to be for the DSi or 3DS. But which one???
Oh com'n now, even Nintendo's not crazy enough to start Pokemon gen5 on the stopgag system that they themselves just made obsolete.

Ok. This has nothing to do with the link you sent, but I love how Chrome will ask to translate it from Japanese to English. :lol
It says that it's the newest Pokémon game for Nintendo DS. Is it ambiguous?

EDIT: Beaten.

Nah, the DSi is Nintendo's real handheld for years to come. the 3DS is just a third pillar

It's not in any way ambiguous. Aside from the paragraph mention in the info box it clearly says "Supported Platform: Nintendo DS."

Well outside of the fact it doesn't make sense for this to be on the DS.. and I would be disappointed. Means we won't get much of an evolution. Oh well. Will wait and see.

Ugh, this thread. It's announced for DS, get that through your head and stop trying to second guess an official press release. If you really think it would be odd perhaps you've missed the fact that nearly every hardware iteration is preceeded by a Pokemon game and rarely followed:

Pokemon Red/Green/Blue: Gameboy Pocket releases 5 months later
Pokemon Yellow: Gameboy Color releases 1 month later
Pokemon Crystal: Gameboy Advance releases 3 months later
Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire: Gameboy Advance SP releases 3 months later
Pokemon Emerald: DS releases 3 months later
Pokemon Diamond and Pearl: DS Lite releases 6 months later
Pokemon Platinum: DSi releases 2 months later
Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul silver: DSi XL releases 2 months later.

You guys are really bad at looking at your "evidence." The best you can hope for is DSi/3DS enhanced.
None of those examples involve a successor system following closely after the start of a new Pokemon generation.

Is the speculation of the new Pokemon game being on the 3DS unsubstantiated? Yes. Is the speculation impossible or even implausible? No. Indeed, the idea that this new game will even be a mainline game is itself unsubstantiated speculation.

Wasn't there a flowchart on the Japanese site showing all the mainline games (without remakes) leading directly to this new title?

You're only fooling yourself here. Everytime we have these threads people get out of control. The press releases is pretty clear and given the supporting context I can't see how anyone would think otherwise unless they really want to stretch it and make it say a lot of things it didn't.

Actually, I think itll be just like Gold/Silver.

The games worked on the GB and GBPocket..... but stick it in the GBC and you get a full range of colors.

I think this Pokemon will be the same. Play it on the DS family....but if you stick it in the 3DS you get 3D.

Note: Pokemon Crystal was GBC only, so it's entirely possible that the 3rd release in the next family will be 3DS only.

Indeed.
"First completely new Pokemon game since Diamond and Pearl" makes it pretty darn clear it can't be any sort of remake since Platinum and HGSS were already released.
As for the platform, I can't be sure what "Nintendo DS" means until Nintendo makes that clear.

I hope this game doesn't use the same engine as all the recent Pokemon games
We have already played
Diamond and Pearl
Platinum
Soul Silver and Heart Gold

If there is another set of games with the same graphics and engine it would be ridiculous, Pokemon games are already similar enough but the same graphics and engine again would take the piss

Pokemon games haven't used the same engine more than twice
Engine 1 - Red/Blue/Yellow
- Silver/Gold/Crystal
Engine 2 - Ruby/Saphire/Emerald
- Fire Red/Leaf Green
Engine 3 - Diamond/Pearl/Platinum
- Soul Silver/Heart Gold

Yeah, this thread is unbearable.

I guess I'll just come back for the first DP engine screens come the 11st.

It would be really annoying if they used the same engine again. They talk about it being a revolutionary game and i doubt they can do that with the same old stuff. Now the HG/SS modified engine is great but if it's a new gen i want something new.

I am really confused at some of you guys' definitions for 'new'.

Engine? Come on. You walk in 4 directions. What is there to change about the engine? Pokemon is a time sink. The changes will be in the features, not in the base mechanics.
And even if they "change" the engine, so what? You will not notice anything. The engine changed between GSC and RSE, and the most we got out of it was the running shoes.

Um, no? The overworld is far different from RSE to DP.

8-directions. Per-pixel walking, not per-tile walking.

Every region in the game please.

:(

If it's on the DS, it ain't gonna happen. The only way I'd be happy with it being on the 3Ds (which I'll be buying at launch) is if it has every region.

It's almost like they deliberately release games guaranteed to sell ten million copies on a system that's sold at least ten million units. :o

I'd prefer a customizable house (which can be visited by other players still) myself.
I wish that more could have been done with the Villa in Platinum. Instead, it was just a nice money sink (along with the million dollar Ribbon).

Well, you will notice some stuff. The framerate in Diamond and Silver was strangely low...I'd like that to be fixed.

Well, it was running at 30fps, like most 3D-using DS games, in contrast to the GBA games, which ran in delicious 60fps, as did most 2D GBA games. That's probably what you noticed.

Walk more than 4 directions
Better animation for Pokemon 2D sprites or 3D Polygon graphics for the Pokemon
Include actual voices for Pokemon, not some muffled sound

My dream: completely touch screen interface. Walk around Phantom Hourglass style, then transition to selecting attacks with stylus! Would make everything much more seamless.

As an extra option, sure. But as the only method? God no.
