Pokemon sequel is under development for DS

Ah, so it's really 5th gen :D

Build ups to Pokemon games are always awesome, with new Pokemon and info slowly trickling out.

And it kinda looks like Sonic in werehog form.

Masuda said it's "Z" from the movie.

It's a new legendary pokemon or an awesome new pokemon (like Lucario in the 8th movie).

I hope it's not a legendary. Back in the Red/Blue days, those were something special. Hell, one of my best gaming memories is talking my parents into driving me for 2 hours to get Mew. So awesome

Nowadays I don't even know how many there actually are.

Arcanine was considered a legendary for some reason in the 1st gen, but most people didn't even notice it. Things can't get much worse than that.

Wait a second... why is that a full circle?

Are they implying something here?

Who is hoping for new types?

Fire/Bug, Fire/Ice, Ice/Bug, Dark/Steel, Ghost/Fire, Fire/Grass, Rock/Grass, Rock/Ice, Ghost/Rock, Fighting/Flying...

EDIT: Forgot about Frosslass, which is indicative that there should be more of that type.

WPM of Pokebeach has made a VERY interesting guess; a Mightyena evo, considering it's a wolf, and the new one might be a werewolf... ?!

Mightyena is being advertised with the movie as well.

I always wanted to see Mightyena evolve, that thing is badass and fierce, just imagine if it evolved! Well that might be the case now! :O

Can you imagine something like the ghost boss in super mario galaxy? And yes, there are soo many more type combinations that gamefreak refuses to explore...

Edit: Some of you guys are really nostalgic when it comes to pokemon designs.

It is? So far only the legendary beast trio are revealed.

Here's hoping it plays at least a little different from the last hundred iterations. Its been over 10 years and it still feels like we're playing the original red and blue.

I really don't think they will make only one version for 5th Gen. Two versions per game has been a trademark of Pokemon games and there is always fans that will buy both versions so that's profit I'm sure Nintendo doesn't wanna lose.

You guys need to remember how much of a success Lucario alone was for Nintendo. For some reason, little boys LOVED Lucario. That movie staring him, plus merchandise featuring him is really profitable for Nintendo. I wouldn't doubt if he has an evolution that's the star of the next movie.

Is this new movie that one that is suppose to be in theaters in the US? Or did that get canned?

this is a good theory. any promotional media with Mightyena in it?

And thus the speculation begins! Last night was exciting, even though we only ended up with a sihlouette. Here are my thoughts on things so far

I think the only way this WON'T be a brand new pokemon is if one of the new gameplay mechanics features something like fusion or 4th evolutions, in which case the first pokemon they reveal will almost certainly be one that showcases said new feature. And as much as the bottom half looks like lucario, I really don't think it will be a third evolution for him (unless, like I said, there is some new fusion technique or something)

I'm also wondering if this pokemon z is standing in such a way that the sihlouette is throwing all of us off

Also, don't think that there won't be two versions just because of the corocoro teaser image. As others have said it wouldn't look good to have two blank boxes. It's probably not good to read into things that deeply. But hey, at the same time, that's half the fun :P

I have to be honest... part of me is worried about all of this talk of huge changes to the game. But at the same time, it IS time for something different to keep things interesting. I just hope it isn't something polarizing that alienates half of the fanbase

Also do you think corocoro would reveal this pokemon in their issue on the 15th when he clearly said last night it would be unveiled the 21st? It's not like he is unaware of corocoro and how they would beat him by six days if they are revealing the same thing

I thought about this last night.

Clearly Z is a Pokemon that can assume human form. It also looks rather vulpine.

Since most everything in Pokemon is inspired by Japanese mythology, I think this likely makes it some kind of fox-spirit Pokemon.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kitsune

Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.

These shapes are not limited by the fox's age or gender, and a kitsune can duplicate the appearance of a specific person.

Does that mean it's an alternate evolution of Vulpix? Maybe - we've seen alternate evolutions of Stone-evolved Pokemon before, and they could be splitting fox-like Pokemon into their good and evil aspects. The silhouette certainly looks more "physical" than Ninetales, and in many cases alt-evos now are used to split Pokemon based on Attack or Special Attack-based moves.

But there's really no reason it can't be its own thing - it's certainly been known to happen before.

Also, regarding the "is this really a Pokemon game!?" thing... Part of me wonders if this just means they're going to ditch the gym/master format of the games. They've been adding more and more "story" to each successive generation... maybe they've decided they're tired of building their games around the gym structure. In this scenario, the gameplay mechanics will be largely the same, but the overall packaging of the experience will be vastly different.

aw man, now you got me worried that the new feature might be some kind of new evolution, where every Pokemon gets a two-legged human-like form, as can be seen in the silhouette... :(
No Digipokemon please.

Nah, I doubt humans will be able to turn into pokemon or vice versa. Though, to be honest, they could do some cool things with that.

Or hell, maybe Z will be the poster child for a new breeding system. Lucario+Ninetails or something. That would be sweet. Although I can't imagine how much work it would take to create unique sprites and movepools and stats for all the possible combinations of pokemon that could breed, so I think that's highly unlikely. As much as I hope the breeding system gets overhauled, if it does happen, I don't think it will go as deep as some of us would hope for

i dont know...crossing/breeding every pokemon with another one of your choice would be weird...and limiting said crossing to just some pokemon would be frustrating.
Oh well, i guess i simply dont like 2-legged Pokemon (those that look like human Pokemon. Charizard is, of course, okay :D)

what i really want is an emphasis on pokemon´ gender. visually, i mean. just small differences.

I would appreciate more organic designs in the future.

That said, as long as it isn't anything Lucario-related, I suppose I'll survive.

I think both of you are on to something but are missing the connections.
Mightyena is in the movie it would seem . . . and the movie is called "Master of Illusion Z/ Phantom Ruler Z" or something.

Lucario was/ is something that both Pokey-Boys and Pokey-Girls go balls crazy for. He was the first true successful "next gen" mascot out of all the gens from what I can tell.

What am I getting at? That I think this is a Lucario LIKE Pokemon, as in, its gonna be the "master" of something, its gonna talk, its gonna be rare in the games, its gonna have it's own brand new evol line and its gonna take his place as the "cool bad ass Pokemon". In other words, if Nintendo made a SSB4 in the next 4 few years then Z would replace Lucario like Lucario replaces Mew2/ Pichu.

What about Mightyena? I think that by being a "Phantom Ruler/ Illusion Master" that it will be a Dark/ Something type. Some type that had never been in the games like . . . Dark/ Psychic or Dark/ Fighting. Because of it being a dark type I can see it either being apart of a Mightyena pack or some how Mightyena in the movie is connected to it as a fellow Dark type. (Or maybe it might be a Psychic/ Something type that Mightyena is strong against 0_o)

Thats my guess. :D

I just wish the new gen emphasizes more time functions including date/month, etc. Animal crossing style...specific events on specific days (just for fun mind you and to maybe catch rarer pokemon easier...not for plot related events). Silver and Gold did this a bit with time but then they kind of moved away from it. It's these kind of lateral changes that excite me more than tweaks to a battle system that I already enjoy.
