Pokkén Tournament is a one on one fighting game that stars your favorite (or not so favorite) Pokémon fighting one another.

the game has a unique mechanic with Phase Change, the game has two Phases, Field Phase in where the players fight in a 3D battlefield where it resembles the Naruto Storm series, Duel Phase in where the players fight in a 2D battlefield and it resembles more traditional fighting game like Street Fighter. Causing a Phase Change is done through set moves eg throws.

other than that it resembles a more traditional fighting game with health bars and Burst Gauge (Super meter), activating Burst is done with pressing both L and R at the same time and will cause your Pokémon to go into their super mode (and Mega evolve if the Pokémon has one) and can activate their super move with the press of L and R together again but supers can only be done once per burst so don't waste it.

in Pokkén Tournament playable Pokémon are separated into four different categories

Standard: Doesn't excel too far in a single area. Is able to perform under any situation.
Speed: Focuses on lots of movement to get around the enemy's attacks.
Power: Bulky in some way, and does above average damage.
Technique: Revolves around some sort of gimmick to give them an edge over their opponent.

still these are very basic guide on what the Pokémon can so i would say give them all a go and see which one you like the most

In addition to the playable cast of Pokémon you also have the Support Pokémon, Support Pokémon are activated with the press of the L button. Support Pokémon come in 3 different flavors, Attack, Disrupt and Enhance.

Attack Supports are your basic attack to help so some extra damage, more pressure or extend a combo

Disrupt Supports are used for interrupting your opponent

Enhance Supports come mainly in the form of buffs like attack, defense and speed buffs or more health/synergy

each support come with two different Pokémon, you chose between which you wanna use at the start or a new round, also do keep in mind each support has different strengths and charge time from fast to normal to slow so don't just go picking the strongest ones cause you might just find yourself in situation where you don't even get a chance to use your support

The Main single player mode is the Ferrum League. In the Ferrum League you battle through various leagues, defeating trainers to increase your rank and making your way up to the Top 8 and take place in the tournament in order for a chance to face the leader of the league to hopefully move up to the next league.

There are four leagues
Green League (D Rank)
Blue League (C Rank)
Red League (B Rank)
Chrome League (A Rank)

this is also where to story of Shadow Mewtwo comes into play as you and other train try to discover what is really going on with it.

you will also find standard fighting game modes, like in Single player where you can face off against the CPU in normal battles or Extra Battles, what are Extra battles? Extra battles are like normal battles but instead of just Synergy Gauge additions, you will find items that increase or decrease your Synergy Gauge, HP, Attack, Defense and Speed.

Practice lets you sharpen your Pokkén skills.
Tutorial which runs you through the basics of the game,
Free Training for Practicing your combos, set ups and what ever you feel need in improving,
Action Dojo is for teasing and teaching various strategies,
and Combo Dojo where you can find Various combos for the cast.

My Town is where you can customize aspects of you and your Pokémon
like your Profile which covers your online display name, avatar appearance, Title, Profile and Battle Code.
there is also Pokémon setting which lets you readjust your Pokémon stats
and other option like sound options and Voice acting.

Local Play lets you play locally with another player, keep in mind the first player has to the game pad and the second player is on the TV, also during this mode the frame rate in cut in half from the 60fps to 30fps.
The alternative mode for this is LAN play where the frame rate in 60fps and and all controllers can be used. Joe has a good guide for LAN set up.

Finally you have Online Play where you can engage in online battles
Friendly Matches can be played with against anyone either with people on your friend list, anyone if you have there battle code or just anyone online.
Ranked Matches are more comparative where you can earn various rank points, awarded based on your success in the match and players compete to get the highest rank.

Included in first run copies of the game in the Shadow Mewtwo amiibo card
scaning it will temporarily unlock Shadow Mewtwo as it will go away if you close the game

also scanning any other amiibo will unlock various items for a select group such as

PokéGold: Between 100PG and 40,000PG
Special Bonus Titles
and Customization Options

but you can only do this, 5 times a day

Great job on the OT! Can't wait to play the game. Thinking I'll start with Gengar and Sceptile first but I'm not sure. Can't wait for tonight!

I look forward to my copy getting here tomorrow! Still, I'm very VERY disappointed with the final roster. such a tiny roster and they wasted 2 slots on an extra pikachu and a 2nd mewtwo.

It's a really fun game. I wasn’t sure what I thought of the 2D/3D switching, but it hooked me almost immediately. It makes the game feel unique compared to standard 2D fighters. It honestly barely plays anything like Tekken, but there is a lot of Tekken flavor in the game otherwise, from the UI to the music. I haven’t touched the online yet, but the single-player seems pretty standard for a fighting game. I like that you can level up your Pokémon like in the main series games. It gives you a sense of progression and a reason to continue playing. You also unlock clothes and whatnot for your avatar, which is neat too.

I’m really enjoying it and I hope it’s successful so it can become a series. The gameplay is too good to be stuck with 16 characters forever even though they’re all very unique.

How about (with the exception of Pikachu) all fully evolved pokes into the game, with their pre-evo's as Assists?

C'monnnnnnnnnnnnn do it Nintendo! MvC2 stopped at 52 chars - break the record!

I'll admit it. I LOL'd a bit at "Edgelord Pokémon".

Nice OT, by the way. Just patiently waiting my order to come in...

I am pretty hyped to play this game, especially since my brother lives on the opposite coast as me, and happens to be coming to visit in a week, just in time for this game. But my god if it doesn't have the strangest roster of any pokemon game ever released. I don't mind, but I really wish I could just hear the conversations that led to some of these inclusions.

There might be more to get but for the past 10 scans it's just been money so I've decided to not bother and just do it legit instead of time warping.

Can you use the same 5 amiibo each time or you do have to use 5 different ones each day?

Nice OT, i got the game early so I've been playing it a while. Loving it more than I thought I would.

The one thing I would say really stands out are the characters diversity and charm, I've been playing for a couple days and I've only played about 4 characters since I enjoy playing them so much. Looking forward to trying out the rest, really loving the move sets and viability.

Does anyone know if leveling up characters and customizing stat points only happens in the Ferrum League mode, or if it is a part of local and online multiplayer?

I was able to level Pokémon by playing against the cpu in local battle.
scaning it will unlock Shadow Mewtwo
You do need to scan it everytime you reboot the game though if you want to use shadow Mewtwo.

Online mode - Only in friendly matches, not ranked.

Local Co-op - You can turn skill points on or off.

Playing with skill points on in EXTRA matches can get hectic lol. Extra match mode random drops positive or negative items in to the arena. Max power up plus high power skill points on a super move is tasty lol.

One thing not mentioned in the OP is that you can customise Nia the announcer, she also can be given special abilities that help your special meter in different ways. Think of her as your cheerleader giving buffs, enemy trainers get buffs of their own as far as i can tell.

What's up with all the Christmas stuff? Was this a holiday event on the arcade machines?

Also, I know what a feather boa looks like. Fluffy Muffler, no way.

You can level up anywhere, including online.

However, Skill Levels do not have any effect online

yeah they were added for a Christmas update when Sceptile was added to the roster, they also did stuff for halloween

This game looks fantastic and I've wanted a Pokemon fighting game for so long. However the only thing holding me back is the feeling that this is inevitably going to be remastered and or ported over to the NX.

Hm... Tough call.
