Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon |OT| Dark Scrolls

Anyone playing a full warrior/melee build and experiencing weirdness (no pun intended) with damage output and stamina?

Sometimes it feels like my damage output varies between strikes, and sometimes my stamina drains much faster than other times. It always happens in the heat of battle, almost as if the game can't really keep track of what is happening.

I also notice that sometimes enemies have much higher damage output. I fought two skeletons with greatswords, one was no problem but the other killed me in two hits. I'm not sure if this is an RNG difficulty thing or just the game being wonky.

It's hard to describe but something feels off sometimes.

So...

What I like to call the Overlord build/tactic.

Go all out 2 hander and heavy armor. Like as much raw heavy damage as possible. Str/End.

Go into summoning and spirituality deep enought to crank out 5 Grindylow. Yes. Grindylows. The goblin looking fuckers with the sledgehammers. They are fast and aggressive as hell. They will be our diversion. There are better damage dealer summons and quicker ones, but these fuckers move erractically and are the best combo of survivability and speed.

Have those little bastards distract everyone and then heavy attack from behind with the 2 hander.

If and when the Grindylows die (which takes a little while cause they bounce around like coked up midgets), back off and summon more.

Hulimiated Galahad this way without getting touched once. And the rest of his entourage.

Been playing on the steam deck. My favourite game this year so far. About 10 hrs in.
How are you finding it on Steam Deck? I saw a couple videos but it looks like it sits under 30fps quite a bit. I'll pick this up tomorrow if it works well enough there, since I'll have a better chance of finishing it if I can bounce between PC and Steam Deck.

It can go under 30 yes but for the most part my experience has been positive. It has felt surprisingly smooth to play. I'm on the oled version of the steam deck and that's all I've played it on. I have not tried it on PC yet.

Is a good dark fantasy Game, Nice dialogs and lore. Exploring is great and combat feel good most of time but lag makes it Bad at some Moments.

Performance is crap on PS5 PRO , 1080p is crap for a 2025 Game. So me Game Will return To My backlog until there is a new patch and they fix performance on PRO or base PS5. For a Game tha does no has great graphics textures , Ray tracing or other gingles at least You expect 60 fps 2k or 4k. the Game looks like a 10 year old Game from PS4.

Those crapy graphics and performance makes all the good stuff going to the trash.

Oh. I did not notice this game came out a few years ago. Heh. I made a thread for it on Coin Return. Seemed worth a look.

Metacritic average of 76, based on 8 reviews. Eight isn't a lot. I've seen many positive reviews on Youtube, but I guess Metacritic does not include those.

Shame about the glitches, the hitches, and the 1080p cap on PS5 Pro. I expected bugs but not a swarm of them. I am holding off for now.

Almost as crappy as your spelling and grammar in this post, holy shit

Well, I am trying to download it on my mobile hotspot and it is saying 6 hours.

I will have to wait until I get back on broadband.

It is really not that big of a download. It is 20GB.

I can't use the gog stand alone installer because it is in a bunch of pieces. Pain in the ass.

If I could download the stand alone installer, I could use this special multithreaded downloader app that I got.

Yeah. I get the impression the game is kind of buggy at the moment. They should have shook out a lot of the bugs in early access.

My hotspot download sped up. Now, it is saying 4 hours. That is more reasonable.

Giving this a try even though I hate First Person. It does have a Third Person option, they warn you its not good and they are right.

I don't know shit about this King Arthur stuff so eh. Wyrd shit is what it is.

Thats ok though, I was/am worried this was going to be what the kids like to call "souls like" and for me that just means no towns and stuff. You know, the things that make an RPG (for me anyway).

Im still early on, but did get a kick out of one of the romance books.

I kinda wish Id known about this earlier, I probably would have done early access.

Overall, no strong opinion since Im sill early in the game.

No roadmap of updatea huh. This publisher usually release games and abandon them. I hope is not the case.
Dunno about the other games released by this publisher but this developer, while working with this publisher, supported their previous game for a couple years after it's release. Pretty much up until they were getting this game ready to release in EA.

For those who require a game to be perfect and with no bugs, this is not the game for you. Well… neither are Elder Scrolls games.

For everyone else who enjoys wyrdness, throat singing, scrolls games and Arthurian legend… buy this game.

Basic bitch question: Are the decent towns with people walking around and NPCs to talk to? (I know there are NPCs and some towns, but in reviews in looks like Elden Ring-ish empty lands to walk around and fight enemies).

My more casual gamer buddy on ps5 claims this game doesn't have fps issues or screen tearing.

Did they fix it or?

Yes there are towns, lots of NPC's and quests. The closest comparable for this game is Skyrim

Do you mean those moments when it sometimes feels like a DND roll for damage? And that one enemy just randomly happens to roll a consistently higher number? Because yea I felt that too.

At least I'm assuming that's what is happening. Makes it interesting though because then I had to change my strategy with that one enemy.

What kind of amazes me is that it is a game like Skyrim and it is 30GB. I guess the first release of Skyrim was that big back in the day.

4 GB actually. About 15-20 GB with Anniversary Edition and it's associated CC addons. But Vanilla 1st release. 4 GB.

Magic is a lot of fun in this game and it is very, very overpowered, at least at this point of the game (first map, barely started main mission, just doing exploration and sidequests.)

I just got an electric whip and like a major fire bomb spells that completely crush anyone, sometimes the bullet time kicks in and you see these motherfucker flying and ragdolling over your head, no idea how bethesda can't do such fun combat after so many games but 50 indie devs almost nailed at their first attempt.

The game scream for some gore tho.

A lot of npcs to talk for lore dump and sidequests but the cities don't exactly feel much alive, at least the first i visited.
Not avowed level but not that far neither.

I hear that PC performance gets worse the further you get.
Yeah flawlessly is not how i would call performance on pc, even early on.

It definitely doesn't feel a rock solid experience but still much better than any bethesda game at launch by far.

Which pc do you have papi?
It's not me dude, many people online have problems on pc.

You are just lucky like i'm usually are with bugged games.

The game also doesn't look nearly as good to have such performances, in its best moments it looks like a decent ps4 game, good art design can only go that far.

I'm level 5. I think I'm doing something wrong though cause I haven't really found many items, just blood transfusion and fireball for spells. The rng on damage needs to be dialed in like others mentioned. I also suck with magic aiming too.

Playing oblivion and skyrim so close to this isn't fair. The screen tearing is the worst I've had on a console ever. The good news is that I've been thinking about this game a bunch and wanna play more. Think I'll go back to oblivion and start a thief character and do brotherhood of darkness and let Tainted cook a bit more. Maybe I just suck at this game though?

Here's an update from discord I stole off our sister site:

Hey all! If all goes to plan, tomorrow we'll be rolling out the first patch across all platforms. This one mainly includes bug fixes, optimization improvements, and a few small QoL updates. Later this week, we're aiming to release a larger patch focused on:

VO and UI bug fixes,
Summon behavior improvements,
Balance adjustments,
Quest-related fixes,
Map collision (falling through the ground) and stability improvements,
Fixes for the display of Devil's Snareand Mandrake,
Various misc fixes and improvements,
We'll post the full changelogs in our 🔧┇patch-notes channel once they're ready. We don't have an ETA for these below yet, but they're on our radar as well:

Crash issues on consoles, including Xbox crashes in the Cuanacht Farmlands,
Allowing you to select higher screen resolution on PS5,
Thank you for playing Tainted Grail and for your patience. We're doing our best to fix the issues ASAP!

Its not that you're doing something "wrong" you just haven't chosen to explore the places that give more spells yet (or flat out missed them). Its easy to miss stuff and unlike Elder Scrolls there doesn't seem to be "guilds" you can beeline for to at least get some baseline options for how you want to play.

I actually restarted after about 10 hours of play. I've roughly gotten back to the same area and have numerous items and quests I somehow missed my first time through.

You have to explore to find spells, i have like 13-14 of them and i barely did anything in the main mission, just exploring and sidequest in the first area.

For me it's the opposite, i can't return to bethesda games after TG :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

The game is updating on PS5. Will report back with any changes I notice.

So far I'm not sure what the patch was for unless it was only for crashes (I haven't crashed yet, knock on wood).

Screen tearing is still there (still in that specific spot and does it even on the map screen...) the sun flashing glitch is still there, and resolution option is still locked at 1080.

There is a vegetation option now. Was that there before?

Does choosing the negative dialogue options have any actual effect on the game? Will it prevent me from any quest options? I want to start a second character and be a total dick to everyone lol

Awesome. Thank you for the information.

Can we rename our characters without starting over?

Thanks for any help.

Can you play as an evil character in this? Vampires, necromancer etc?
You can do necromancy, but I'm not sure if that has any negative effects. Summoning in general seems to be not good or evil, but I've done any actual skeletons or zombies yet.

This may or may not play into some choices later on, but I'm not far enough. Many quests will have choices, but they're not necessarily presented as good or bad.

As far as straight up killing NPCs, I think it's possible, but haven't tested yet lol.

Yeah Starfield ended for me when I attacked an NPC who was leading me on a mission and he simply took a knee and then got back up and kept leading me. His companions didn't even react.

I'm not bloodthirsty but I need to know the world is built to react to that stuff.

I can't remember if Skyrim was that restrictive.
