Machamp is certainly a Pokemon.

What's a good counter to his "advance with (blue) counter up, then grab (green)" attack? It seems to cover all of his bases. Can you bust through command grabs with attacks like regular grabs?

I like it but fighting the same Pokemon over and over, like Pikachu twice in one run of the league can get a bit exhausting.

...And having to scan Shadow Mewtwo once a day? Just let me scan him in and unlock him forever!

You unlock Shadow Mewtwo during the gameplay. Permanent unlock via amiibo makes no sense.

Can you turn off the announcer? I stopped watching preview videos for this game because I couldn't stand her.

Thinking about picking this up. Looks a bit light on content, and possibly repetitive. But it also looks FUN.

yes you can, you can turn off all voices or change them to japanese

Ferum League may be repetitive, but the game otherwise is anything but. The game is designed in a way that really punishes you for sticking to the same gameplan even at low level. You have to put your head into every match since it's all about outsmarting your opponent.

EDIT: Speaking of, had a guy constantly go for Hypnosis with Gengar whenever he had the chance. He kept at it even when I countered it all the time so I just dropkicked him to heaven with Machamp. lol

So do you get anything of worth for beating
Iron League?

I don't remember the last time I had such fun with a game online. Close matches are hype as fuck. Round 3, 1hp left each and you pull of that combo or get that grab. So fucking good.

I love how goofy some of the titles and greetings are

Thankfully the announcer stuff is super customizable. You can change her voice to Japanese, reduce the frequency of her tips, turn down the volume of her voice, or just disable it altogether.

When I get the game I'm going to make sure her settings are as annoying as possible to piss off my friends. <3

I like how satisfying hitting people with Blaziken's attacks are.

Sky Uppercut is like the coolest looking move. When Mega, it has a rainbow streak around the pillar of fire.

Played this game at a local Wii U party on a two TV setup.

Coming from a Tekken and Smash player, I really enjoyed it. Braixen's Fire Blast is a bit OP as a zoning tool. They hate me for spamming it.

This really needs to get big in the sequel, as I wish for more playable characters.

I didn't mind the announcer at first but when I kept losing online and she's constantly like "They made you their punching bag" I just couldn't take it any more.

Despite my shite upload speed I'm surprised I've only experienced lag once.

I haven't experienced a ton of laggy matches, but the ones I have had have been pretty bad. It's similar to Smash 4 where everything goes into slow motion instead of rollback code like most modern fighter games. I had one match yesterday where it was so bad my opponent literally just gave up and let me have the match to end it faster.

Agreed. Online though, I'm just getting blown up by counter happy people. PITA for a rushdown character. It's a tough mechanic to get used to.

I've noticed that you can win basically any match with a few basic hit confirm > x3 button chain combos. Counter and grab give you all the variation you need defensively.

Pretty much the entire game is reads and spacing and not playing gimp in field phase.

I like that.

It perhaps isn't ideal as a high level competitive fighter, but at a lower skill level it likely presents a more gratifying experience than any other fighter on the market. There is a real value in that experience that most people are not able to get.

I played my first ranked match against a shadow mewtwo player with 43 wins while i used Blaziken.

Literally how do you even fight that shit. Why am i getting matched up with experienced players?

I'm having flash backs to arguments about "competitive depth" with hardcore Melee fans when Smash 4 was on the cusp of release :/...people sometimes just don't get that a game that's less complex can be more fun...and more fun means more attention.

Too long. This game has too much single player content. Not kidding. I played all day Saturday and Sunday to unlock Shadow Mewtwo. It was a huge grind.

Charizard has Dr Doom's foot dive.

I wouldn't say it's that bad but it is taking me a few nights of playing for a couple hours each night to burn through the Ferrum League. I personally think the concept of forcing you to rank yourself up through a chain of 5 battles repetitiously over and over is really dry thinking for what could have been an interesting single player progression system.

What gets especially annoying is when you only get a handful of ranks after a perfect win streak, since you can't do the tournament bracket (which is really just more random battles, let's not kid ourselves here) until you hit rank 8. Don't know why it isn't just win 15 matches or so before battling the league leader.

All the single player stuff just feels like a smokescreen for what is basically an Arcade mode. Ranking matches, Tournament matches, Promotion matches, it's all the same thing really. There is that tiny bit of story I suppose.

I don't mind it though. I don't mind having somewhere to bang out AI matches especially when the game is so new still (and unlocking stuff is kinda fun). It should ramp up to be a little more challenging earlier though. I took my first offline loss somewhere in the middle of red league last night, which was after a ton of matches.

I think the main problem is that each league's number of ranks increases considerably, which increases the grind. Sure, if you're winning consistently it's not TOO bad, and if you reach the top 8 you won't have to do league matches ever again for that league (you can do the tournament repeatedly with no loss in rank), but still.

Weirdly enough, while the league examiners have horrible voice direction and volume balancing and the random trainer dialogue whenever Shadow Mewtwo comes up in discussion is kinda mediocre, and Nia is cringeworthy... Once you're really thrust into the game's main plot after reaching A rank, everyone but Nia suddenly has pretty decent voice acting. I'm not even kidding, the game's voice acting quality is practically schizophrenic.

Anyhow, gameplay is pretty fun so far, but probably the two biggest problems with the gameplay is that you're vulnerable just after recovering from a knockdown (the invincibility period ends just before you're even able to do anything to defend yourself from further attack, it's a small window but I've seen AIs exploit it), and combos do far too much damage despite the lack of a mechanic to get out of a combo. An enemy who manages to start a combo can wipe off a big chunk of your HP, then punish you just for recovering from knockdown and damage you even more, it's really unfair.

I like the single player stuff, I like having a mode where I can try out a character and get to know it in an actual fight even if easy. The issue is there are like 4 leagues and they just get slightly harder in each one and just are more and more fights. Like, I appreciate each league being a difficulty mode in a way but when instead of getting tougher it just takes more and more of the same fights then it starts to drag.

I think maybe it's have been better if it was like, the arcade like battles, then the tournament then the "boss fight" to get into the next league. Without having to grind the league matches. That way there are still a decent amount of fights, and the difficulty is increased but it doesn't become a grind. Maybe have the league battle amounts increase in each league, like start at 5, then 6 then 7 then 8 in a row and bigger tournaments as you proceed.

The grind might get to me a bit more because I'm not mixing up my Pokémon at all. I'm just powering through with Chandelure at S.Lvl 55 right now. I feel like I shouldn't switch to a different Pokémon with weaker stats now I'm in the Chroma League.

Either way, I have to say I like the Shadow Mewtwo stuff. I think it's handled really well for a boss character in a fighting game. He gets a cool intro/outro and cool cutscenes and arena, the story while not great is kinda interesting and offers a nice excuse to break from the norm and surprisingly the VA isn't terrible. I was kinda disappointed how similar Mewtwo was to Shadow Mewtwo, they aren't exact clones but like, half clones.

I don't think this is true. I set the training dummy to block after getting up from a knockdown by changing the reaction settings and used a very active move to try and hit them as they're getting up and they didn't get hit and were still able to block.

I did switch Pokemon while moving up in the leagues. It does wonders. Not only do I feel like I'm slogging through each battles less, I'm also getting great battle experience with the various Pokemon I'm switching to. Try it out. Yes, you do have to switch your Partner Pokemon in the settings, which is weird, so it's a small hassle and discourages you from remembering to do so between sets, but give it a shot. Same with Support Pokemon. Rather than be stuck with the same 3 pairs over and over, switch it up. It helps give you a sense of which style is the best for your Pokemon. For instance, I prefer Disrupt or Assist types for Chandelure. As Machamp, I go for pure Attack.

The best value is getting to know your Pokemon's moves inside-and-out. Because, while there's a lot of overlap in inputs (Up + Y is anti-air; Jump + X is a dive), the minute ways you pull over strings is the key to success. Battling wave after wave of NPCs is good for that brain memory. Getting to know your various moves' characteristics--counter attacks, pierces, throws, highs and lows--will make you less of a masher/spammer.

So when I'm being spamed with projectiles what are the best ways to get close?

- Jump over the little ones?
-Counter the big long ones, then forward plus shield to make a quick forward step and close the gap?

Does this go for field and dual modes?

Sometimes shield and dash is better than counter dash canceling if the opponent can send out the projectiles faster than you can get your shield back up after the counter dash.

In field mode I use my jumping homing attack. This probably won't work for long but it seems like people don't expect it for some reason.

Game should get here in the mail today. Can't wait to learn and start maining my fave Pokemons!

It also makes it sweeter that Gardevoir shares moves with my tekken mains, Asuka and Jun. <3

I'm surprised not many people are talking about Gardevoir though, then again I usually always main the underused character.
