My conservative mother (who's become disillusioned with Republican economics) watched the DNC all night. She loved Patrick, Castro, and Michelle's speeches. I'm kind of shocked.

Afterward she was like "I just don't like the abortion stuff."

Link her to this article:

http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/09/04/anti-abortion-pro-democrat/

Specifically, the last section:

During the question and answer session, a reporter from RedState.com asked the panelists how they could support President Obama, who, she said, favors “infanticide.” Everyone on stage looked a little embarrassed.

By way of an answer, Stephen Schneck from The Catholic University of America told the audience that Mr. Romney proposes to slash Medicaid–which pays for more than one-third of all births in the United States. Births are expensive, whereas abortion costs almost nothing, suggesting that abortions would “skyrocket” if Mr. Romney came to power by as much as 6 or even 8 percent.

WTF

The DNC video I linked to with all of the speeches was taken down by YouTube BECAUSE:

This video contains content from WMG, SME, Associated Press (AP), UMG, Dow Jones, New York Times Digital, The Harry Fox Agency, Inc. (HFA), Warner Chappell, UMPG Publishing and EMI Music Publishing, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.
Sorry about that.

This speech is great. Hillary better watch out for 2016. PD better get some tissues ready.

I am sick and tired of these dumb ass pundits bemoaning the lack of jobs and following up with "and we haven't done anything about the deficits." You DUMB FUCKS those things are virtually diametrically opposed in the short term!

Schweitzer tomorrow? Awesome. Dude is pretty funny.

I forgot 2 speeches that I thought were good too. Ledbetter gave a passionate plea and called Romney a coward for not taking a stand in either direction on equal pay.

The mom who talked about Obamacare saving her kid was pretty powerful as the girl was on stage with her sister and dad. Great visual. Gave some depth to the situation with her case being 1 in 100. She called out Romney too effectively.

It's the automated take-down mechanism. Google needs to address it cause it's becoming quite a problem.

I was honestly teary eyed during this. I had to get up and go get a drink. I can't even imagine having a child sick like that, and to have to worry about healthcare costs and even something as shitty as a lifetime max... I just can't describe how much I detest that we allowed that to happen for so long.

I don't understand how it was perfectly a-okay to stream it live but as soon as it's archived it gets slapped with copyright infringement.

I didn't see the speech, but did Obamacare really save the kids? I presumed that most of the big features of PPACA don't go into effect until 2014.

It was more about the removal of lifetime coverage caps that totally screw over families of children born with disabilities and birth defects.

Removing lifetime maximums, disallowing benefits denial based on pre-existing conditions and other things that benefited young children went into effect almost immediately.

  • June 21, 2010
    • Adults with existing conditions became eligible to join a temporary high-risk pool, which will be superseded by the health care exchange in 2014.[41][47] To qualify for coverage, applicants must have a pre-existing health condition and have been uninsured for at least the past six months
  • September 23, 2010
    • Insurers are prohibited from imposing lifetime dollar limits on essential benefits, like hospital stays, in new policies issued.
    • Insurers are prohibited from excluding pre-existing medical conditions (except in grandfathered individual health insurance plans) for children under the age of 19.
    • Insurers' abilities to enforce annual spending caps will be restricted, and completely prohibited by 2014.
    • Insurers are prohibited from dropping policyholders when they get sick.

Kids are no longer allowed to be dropped from insurance due to pre-existing conditions

ahh, nice. Why don't people like PPACA again?

Only the insurance agencies should be against it, and even then, only slightly so because they are going to have millions more of customers.

EDIT: and I do know the answer to my question.

Same here. It amazes me that the majority of the country isn't rallying around this.

Yes - The lifetime limits have already been removed which is what she specifically talked about because having so many bills right at birth.

Why don't you post what you think that answer is?

She was halfway to her lifetime max at age 6. So she still had time left, but Obamacare going into effect means that ~6 years from now she won't be maxed out.

Seeing MSNBC live at midnight reminds me of those few late night shows with drunk Dan Abrams or the ones with Joe paired with Ron Reagan.

Which is why it blows my mind that anyone with children would be against the healthcare law at all.

It's too bad Hllary won't be giving a speech. I understand why you can't have the sitting Sec of State speak at a political convention, but still.

One thing I've learned from the Whitehouse Flickr stream: Obama loves to give birthday cakes.

I have a great idea for an Obama campaign ad:

Have some random democratic senator or representative get up and say,

"The current health insurance system is broken. Costs are skyrocketing at a level outpacing inflation by several times. The sick and elderly are denied coverage and the uninsured are becoming a burden on those who do pay by skyrocketing ER visits, unpaid bills, and care that is reactionary to a crisis, rather than preventative in nature, which happens to be several times more expensive and several times less effective.

I have a plan, backed by millions of Americans. What I will do is:

- guarantee coverage to all. We as a society should care for all, especially the sick or meek. A cancer diagnosis should not become a death warrant. A major surgery shouldn't mean being dropped from coverage.

- cover children as they transition from adolescence to adulthood. With children staying at home or in college longer that at any time in our country's history, we need a plan that will cover these children until they make the full jump to profession and independence.

- protect Medicare and expand its coverage for the growing elderly population.

- control costs. Insurance agencies will be forced to keep costs low so that we can finally keep medical care within reason for all.

- What is great is that the vast majority of Americans who wish to be a part of this plan are already on qualifying plans. Most will not need to adjust their coverage. Those who, for some reason or another, do not wish to be a part of this all inclusive plan will pay a fair tax, with income qualifiers to not put any undue burden on the less fortunate amongst us.

- This plan has been evaluated by both the Congressional Budget Office and independent economists who all note that my plan will save hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade and longer.

- It is not perfect, but is the right step towards a fair health insurance plan that all can be a part of. It is the capitalist solution to a very personal and intimate necessity of life and society."

Then, he takes a curtain away from a placard.

"Sounds like a great plan, right? Thankfully, my plan was passed by both houses of congress at the end of 2009. My plan is called the Affordable Care Act, and it is already saving lives, the finances of millions, and helping to reduce the federal debt. See how at the bipartisan website, www.ACASaves.org"

Is that too easy, or what? Appeals to emotion, reason, and pocketbooks, the website could have independent verification from all sorts of fact-checkers, economists, doctors, scientists, insurance agencies, hospital administrators, etc.

It seems like the Dems just haven't conveyed these points well and that is why there is so much "Grab yer torches and pitchforks" mentality. Maybe I am way off base.

I wouldn't make it a democratic ad, in retrospect, just a Super-PAC ad. That way it can truly be "Bi-Partisan" and not have the souring effect of having centrist President Obama approving the message at the end.

There are so many legitimate concerns about President Obama's presidency, that the focus on a constitutionally proven law that benefits tens of millions is just STUPID.

Romney is a fool, that much is certain, and he is beholden to very evil donors, but he could be doing so much more to be a compassionate deficit hawk than a warlord multimillionaire more concerned to returning things to how they were with absolutely no replacement plan (which would have to be more socialist to improve it...LOL) than to support an obviously Republican solution to a very real problem.

The only thing stopping Michelle Obama from taking a serious run in 2016 would be her own ambition. Good god that woman can give a speech.

Its finally nice to see everyone rallying behind obamacare and explaining what good can come from it. Dems thought it would be best to run from it in 2010 letting republicans control the narrative which sure as hell didnt work. People don't even understand what it is still to this day.

Giving speeches makes people qualified to be president now? I thought the speech was amazing but you guys are going too far. She has never held elected office before

I doubt she'd even want to be president if she could be

That is some troglodyte tier critique.

I clicked on his name and read his timeline and it was a sewer of quasi racist stupidity. I had no idea.

No, that would be the act of an entitled political opportunist riding on her harismatic president husband's coattails, and Pheonix would never accuse Michele of that.
