I had read that the reason he backed out of the 2000 race* (challenging Buchanan for the Reform nomination) at the last second was because of disclosure regarding his casinos.

But since they've all gone bankrupt and he just sells his name as a brand that's probably not a problem anymore.

*Back when he was pro-choice, wanted wealth taxes, gay marriage, campaign finance reform, universal health care, and assault gun bans.

One of these things is not like the other.

Which of course, makes Obama's RCP average a -6

BUT WHAT DOES #TCOT THINK?

@Phxbc
(Do They Come Out Of The WH Like Unemployment #'s?)POLLS CLASH OVER OBAMA APPROVAL: REUTERS 37%, GALLUP 46%... http://ow.ly/HpzTe

@timbotim62
Reuters 9% more honest than Gallup, but still not honest. Real .@BarackObama approval is in the 20s #RedNationRising http://m.washingtonexaminer.com/div...a-in-week-marked-by-paris-mia/article/2558727 …

@LinBennett
For all those hearing that Obama's approval rating is on the rise. Today's Reuters poll contradicts Gallup's... http://fb.me/71ZIbqeBe

The Reuters poll probably shows some of the limits of online polling, which is too bad. I like it at an option. But it's probably healthy that every single poll doesn't say the same thing, and that there's an outlier.

First PPP poll of the season

PPP's first poll of the 2016 Pennsylvania Senate race finds it picking up pretty much where the 2010 Senate race left off- with Pat Toomey holding a narrow edge over Joe Sestak. Toomey leads Sestak 40/36, similar to his 2 point margin of victory the first time the duo faced off.

Four years into his first term, Toomey's approval numbers aren't terribly impressive. 28% of voters approve of the job he's doing to 35% who disapprove, comparable to the 31/34 spread he posted on PPP's last poll in June. A plurality of voters- 37%- don't have any opinion about Toomey at all. That level of anonymity with voters leaves his fate next year somewhat up to the political winds- if it's another good year for Republicans like the last time he ran he may be alright, but if it's a stronger Democratic year he'll be in deep trouble.

Sestak has largely faded from Pennsylvanians' minds since his 2010 bid as well. Only 40% of voters in the state have an opinion about him with those holding one pretty evenly divided in their feelings.

Likelihood of dem pickups:

WI
PA
NH
NC
FL
OH

Eh. Sestak has every right to run again. He only lost by 2 points. By default, hes going to do better because of the D's coatails. Toomey is going to have to found 300,000+ Hillary supporters to ticket split. In this extremely polarized climate, AINT HAPPENING. Kirk, Johnson and Toomey right now are dead men walking. Ayotte as well if things really go south but I expect her race to be a toss up till the end.

I'm wondering if non-Republican voters are going to have a huge impact on the GOP's nomination process.

If the Democratic nomination is a foregone conclusion, Democratic voters in open primary states are suddenly free to participate in the GOP's process.

With so many GOP candidates running, it's conceivable that we could see candidates win states with pretty low percentages, less than 20% perhaps? So imagine that Jeb wins 19% in one state and the second-place candidate has 17%. Jeb could conceivably credit his victory to the participation of non-Republicans.

It all makes me feel mischievous. I wish there were a way to go online and tell open primary Dems: "okay, for you voters in Louisiana, the polls show this candidate with a tiny lead - so vote for that candidate instead!"

That's my daydream for today. Forcing a brokered convention resulting in a really disastrous ticket, by tinkering with their process..

They probably could (Chris Carney just announced he's considering), it just seems that with Sestak having been in the running for so long he's the best option.

Like Hillary on a much smaller scale.

Exactly. He's been campaigning since he lost, so it's a bit odd his name rec isn't higher. Oh well. I wouldn't want to be in Toomey's shoes:

@ppppolls
Toomey is not popular or unpopular so much as he is undefined. Leaves a lot of his fate up to which way the winds are blowing next

@TajMagruder
.@ppppolls not exactly good news for him in a blue state in a presidential year

@ppppolls
@TajMagruder agreed

Most people tune out statewide/local elections especially this far out in advance. Plus the last time he faced the electorate it was in 2010 when even less people turned out.

A barrage of attack ads will boost his name recognition.

First corporations can exercise religion, and now Muslims?

What is the world coming to?

lol @ trying to make it analogous to Hobby Lobby. What a stretch.

But this was an obvious unanimous ruling; a good one.

Court rejected to hear an appeal to the debit card fees case allowing the previous rule to apply (giving the Fed Reserve deference for allowing higher fees than specifically outlines in the lDodd-Frank under claim of ambiguity even though there really isn't any). Tipping their hat for King, perhaps!?!?!?

Of course it's analogous. Hence the numerous citations in the opinion to the opinion in Hobby Lobby. But however we differ on that point, I'm glad to see we agree that this is a good outcome.

Not even a little bit.

If Congress only had to ratify every proposed rule, and ratification votes could not be filibustered or delayed at all, that could possibly work. I still think Congress wouldn't have the bandwidth to do it.

Also, do you really want Boehner and Pelosi haggling over how many ppm of X chemical compound is safe in the atmosphere?

Either we believe in democratic government, or we don't. Let's take the bad with the good.

Wayne Morse's 2015 SOTU response challenge: take a shot every time Joni Ernst mentions she is either a mother or a soldier.

Participants will get hospital bills covered.

Sotu response has become a doom machine for GOP "stars". Piyush Jindal The Page, Crazy eyes bachmann, Waterboy Rubio etc. Oh and that "rising" GOP star that subsequently got hit with a scandal last year. I wonder why they send these poor people to their doom.

I may try this. I probably shouldn't though, been using too much sick leave lately.

Also, I've been able to participate as a subject matter expert for VA benefits, democrats (small d) hate me!

Jindal doubled down on his derp. CNN was having a bit of fun mocking him for his stupid no-go zones shit.

This is once again a perfect example of why Republicans are objective far worse and more dangerous than Democrats. For the left, our loonies are people who might show up to protests and do something embarrassing. For the right, their loonies are actually elected officials who are responsible for the lives of millions of people.

But both sides are the same, amirite, APK?

Man this Republican nominee field is pretty amusing so far. They really have a terrible field, I think even by wishful Republican standards.

AP/Charles Dharapak Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, right, with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in 2012. A new poll indicates two leading contenders have actually lost ground since announcing their interest in the 2016 race for the White House.

According to a NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey released Monday, both 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) are less popular than they were last year.

Last September, when Romney was repeatedly insisting he would not run for president again, 32% of Americans and 60% of Republicans viewed him favorably.

Romney's popularity has since dipped. According to the NBC poll, just 27% of Americans and 52% of Republicans have a positive rating for him. The drop comes after Romney revealed his interest in a potential 2016 run in January.

Bush's ratings have also taken a small tumble since December, when he announced he was taking a major step toward running for president and forming a leadership PAC. In November, 26% of Americans and 44% of Republicans viewed Bush positively. Now 19% of Americans and 37% of Republicans say the same.

btw is there a separate thread for the SOTU?

I'll throw something together in the next half-hour if no one else does

Don't forget to throw this in the OT:
