Correct. But by the 1st century it ceased being only a physical literal place but carried a symbolic meaning too. Your statement about the wicked is true but it ignores the Pseudepigraphal and NT use of everlasting torment in conjunction with the word 'hell'.

The same way that the RCC says there are men/women who are straight that shouldn't get married/have sex. That actually is biblical. Ofcourse the difference being that the RCC sanctions hetero marriages if these individuals can't continue to stay single and not have sex while there is no such option for gays.
