PROMETHEUS UNMARKED SPOILER THREAD!

Having your actors wear a helmet the whole movie is not what any actor or director wants. Its the same reason Spider Man has his mask off all the time. An actor's most powerful tool is their eyes and facial expressions. A look can tell much more than any dialogue can at times.

Absolutely true but that is not the case with the space suits in Prometheus. You can't see ANY part of Peter's face when he has his mask on. Those space helmets, though, are bubbles of clear glass. If Peter raises an eyebrow as Spider-Man that is completely lost of the audience because they can't see it but there is nothing in the way of seeing the characters in Prometheus emote through them, no mouth guard or voice box or respirator or goggles or anything to obscure our view of their faces/eyes.

I seriously doubt that any deleted scenes would answer any questions. Furthermore, I do NOT want them to answer any questions. Good sci-fi raises questions, but doesn't necessarily answer them and that's perfectly fine and acceptable. What I DO want deleted scenes to do is further explore the impact of the questions on the characters and their motivations. That is what this film was seriously lacking in its current form -- the questions posed carry absolutely no weight with the charcters.

However, because of the "quality" of the writing that I witnessed on the screen, I have absolutely no faith that any added material would address this glaring flaw. Simply put, I firmly believe that Prometheus is beyond redemption from an extended/director's cut (unlike Kingdom of Heaven).

Now that I think about it the crew of Alien also acted rather nonchalantly when they discovered what was to them BRAND NEW LIFE. I just expect more of OMG WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SHIT??!?!?!?

Also since Prometheus is funded by Weyland and actually has him on board, wouldn't the company back home know this? Wouldn't they know their ship was lost and crew dead? So in the future when the Nostromo is out in space all this should be known no? Or are we assuming they just covered everything up?

Would many scientists agree to go on a 10 year trip without being told what they were going to be doing / seeing / experimenting on?

Not many decent ones would, especially if it was just for "another terraforming mission" (which seems to be quite common the way the pilots / engineers talk about it).

I doubt these "scientists" represent the best earth has to offer, merely just people who were looking for a bit of adventure and some cash.

Why were they not told before hand?

Just so the trailers can have the 'and we arrived this morning' line?

Maybe Weyland didn't want any of his competitors to find out what he was doing and get there before him?

Or he figured most people would completely balk at the idea of there being our creators out there on a moon ready and willing to give us more life.

That was never in the mission briefing given to them all, I would think having a massive company full of talented people you could find some willing to get crazy pay days for it even knowing the remoteness of success.

This is a Ridley Scott movie. When is a Ridley Scott film not significantly hacked to pieces? I imagine the Director's Cut to be what you were looking for.

Huh, there's only been two cases of this, and both for different reasons. In Blade Runner control was taken away from Ridley and he did the best he could under the pressure he was put in by the backers. In Kingdom of Heaven he himself made the final decision to edit that shit to have a much lower running time and a PG13 rating, for box office purposes. I would actually say KoH was the only that was literally hacked to pieces.

We don't really know if an eventual DC is actually coming, nor if it will actually improve the movie(it would have to be an improvement of epic proportions) or just extend it with scenes that don't really amount to much (like the unrated edition of Ridley's Robin Hood, or the extended edition of Gladiator).

Well, Ridley has stated that the theatrical cut of Alien is his true Director's Cut. And in that case, he's definitely right to claim that one.

I think the Final Cut of Blade Runner is not quite as good as the Director's Cut (which isn't a director's cut, oddly) since it removes key elements of ambiguity.

Here's hoping that this DC is more Kingdom of Heaven and less Blade Runner/Alien.

I didn't know he preferred the theatrical release. So whose bright idea was it to put out the worse DC?

Bleh extended editions just remind me of Gladiator no thanks.

What's so bad about the Gladiator EE?

I believe it was a five year trip (2.5 years each way).

Actually, it's not mentioned anywhere how long they were expecting to travel. I suspect either the scene was cut or they simply didn't think of include a scene with the scientists on earth.

Someone brought up an interesting point, why would scientists willingly go on a trip when they haven't been told where they are going.

I put it forward that they were told where they going, but they simply weren't told why beyond a vague exploration mission to an Earth like moon.

I'm more surprised that they didn't react at all beyond we have to catch it. Here's something that birthed itself less than a day after something attached itself to Kane and they don't think to themselves that if it managed to grow to that size in a few hours, how much bigger it could get within the time frame of them going out to look for it?

It's nothing more to than a scene to move the plot along, you're not supposed to think about it for more than a minute and it's not something that the director or screenwriters intended fans to dissect years later.

For example, why didn't Ash conduct a post mortem on the body to check if there were any other 'creatures' waiting to birth themselves? Sure, the alien had already birthed itself, but how did they know there was only one and why didn't they (Ash) investigate further?

I suspect they covered it up. They probably discover Shaw's message at some point and decided from that point on to make sure that any anomalies in space were investigated. (through Mother and Ash and later on, sponsored colonies, etc)

When Vickers asks how long she's been in stasis, David replies: "2 years, 4 months, 18 days, 36 hours, 15 minutes." We can therefore infer that the journey time would be approximately five years, no?

And that is where I'm coming from. The problems with the writing in Prometheus occur at such a fundamental level that I doubt any extra material can alleviate them.

I meant more along the lines how long they were expecting the trip to last. her asking suggests they weren't told how long they'd be stasis.

so either they were simply told we're going to moon x to explore as it might be habitable and we can set up a base of operations/colony/mine for precious materials, etc but we don't know how long it will take or the scene was cut.

I want to say the scene was cut, but something tells me they didn't bother filming any such scene and they all agreed to come along for the money, not caring now long it would take to get there.

Ok, now that the hype is gone.

I still think it's a good movie. But it could have been much better.

Indeed, the movie has a terrible editing and pacing. Also, after Weyland is shown things get really cheesy.

I find it doubtful that Vickers wouldn't know about that... My money would be on "clumsy exposition".

Now that I think about it, you're right.

She had her pod set to open and wake her up upon passing the destination threshold, so it makes sense she'd at least have an idea of how long they'll be stasis.

It needed much less to begin with, the more time goes on the more my memories of it feel more like a TV series then a single movie.

So many diffent threats pop up and are dealt with in quick fashion.

I wonder how much has to do with their being two screenwriters/the tweaking/rewriting of the original script.

Has it leaked yet? Quite surprised it hasn't, we had the entire MoS script leak and then there was the Avengers leak as well. Have Fox locked it down or something? They don't want anyone to see just how bad/good it was before the rewrites?

Two hours of David watching Lawrence of Arabia would be more illuminating than this and more entertaining to boot. Shame, I had high expectations for this. Just hope the other big films of the year live up to expectations including that Tolkien film in December.

Nice touch to include a link to T.E Lawrence though, who just happened to share a few of the traits that eventually came to the fore in David.

The movie had like eight rewrites. At some point you have to step back up and realize "damn maybe there's something fundamentally FUBAR about this shit..."

I actually had a similar thought running through my head when I watched the movie, it's like a mini-series edited into a feature length film. There really is too much crap going on, it doesn't support the weight of the "epic" scope it's trying to present. It's just a really weird script, the pace and flow of it is all fucked up.

Yeah and I see now how a lot of the same criticism can be attached to Alien. I just watched it recently for the first time and in some instances that crew also reacts really unnaturally to discovering a planet with an Alien ship, Alien creature in a driver's seat with its chest burst wide open, and then the Alien that explodes out of the chest onto their ship.

At the time I watched Alien I just thought oh its set in the future so they must have already discovered Alien life form in some manner so that's why they don't all act out of this world shocked or surprised.

Same issues I had with Prometheus.

Finally saw it last night her in Germany

gorgeous fucking film with some great music

...and that's about it

Between Lost, Cowboys n' Aliens, and this, I'm really starting to hate Damon Lindelof

As a percursor to Alien ...man, I kinda wish this movie didn't exist =/

I do find the making of it very interesting though and will undoubtedly be buying the blu-ray just for the supplements ala Avatar

You forgot LEGEND.

The director's cut is FAR superior to the Tangerine Dream bullshit of the theatrical cut.

Scientifics felt so fake like if they were from a Discovery channel/Animal Planet tv show.

"Their DNA ... they're a perfect match!"

Meanwhile they're 10 feet tall, have no melanin and can survive multiple gun shots without twitching.

Later they said that the DNA was a precursor, but when they first did the "DNA match!" thing they made it sound like it was a 100% match.

Fake interfaces is one of my pet peeves and when the movie had the flashing ''100% match'' text on it I wanted to shout, it's like people in film and TV think Fisher Price make all the software in the world.

This pet peeve is a pet peeve of mine. Just because the dna is a match for what they're looking for doesn't mean every single G, A, T, or C lines up and matches. The interface was sufficiently vague to mean just about anything.

Well... Chimps do have more than 98% of their DNA EXACTLY like ours. And are so different from us, after all.

I find ok that writers are not geneticist and don't know things like how exactly DNA works 100%, I don't know it either. But theres a basic stuff that they ought to at least research. We know basically that everyone's DNA is different (except for twins), so those 100% matches in Tv and movies are an insult to anyone's intelligence. Throwing a "their base DNA is similar to our own" should be enough to convey what they want to say, that the engineers indeed made us.

That is how I viewed the film. It's good but it's flaws keep it from being great. Questionable decisions, weird pacing, lack of follow through on story elements, all keep it from being something special and can be linked back to the script in some form.

Of course this is Ridley Scott doing a Sci-fi film that takes place in the Alien universe. It's going got be dissected and ripped to shreds until some view it as absolute gutter trash for not living up to their expectations.

I can't find screen shots of the scene but lack of real information, the animation and flashing where the real offenders, it looked like the interface was made just to tell them if DNA scanned it was a match or not.

Was it coincidence or a call back when they were yelling at Halloway (i think) "We are LEAVING!

Quote from Aliens "Marines, we are LEAVING!"

Well I guess we know what he said now:

Here's the line that David speaks to the Engineer, and the consultant's translation of it:

/ida hman?m a? kja nam?tuh zd?:taha/…/gh??vah-pjorn-?ttham sas da:t? kredah/

A serviceable translation into English is:

"This man is here because he does not want to die. He believes you can give him more life."

Just came back from the movies, have some questions.

What was the Engineer at the start doing? Was it a representation of how we were created? He killed himself to form a new species, us? Or was he simply spreading the "virus" on a planet through the water supply to destroy it? I got the impression that they were trying to wipe out planets and why they had some many pods with that virus.

What was the point of Charlize Theron character?
lol
To have a famous name on the movie poster?
And why did she have to die like a villain, I didn't get the villain vibe from her at all.

Considering the space jokey at the start of Alien is a different one, how did he also bred a new alien? Are they that unlucky that the same thing happened twice?

Vicker's was crushed by the ship piloted by the being her father hoped would grant him immortality. She was killed by the weight of her fathers ambition/shadow.

...

lol.

Seriously, I got nothing. It's the most nonsensical death in the entire movie. it felt like there was more to her character, but it was either cut or written out but they decided to keep her around.
