PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Sorry for the double post, but I was curious if anyone knows anything about the supposed atlus game reprints that've been around on ebay lately (like THIS or THIS or THIS). I ordered a couple and they seem legit except the cases seemed to be lower quality than some of the ones I have. the games worked fine.

So in your collective opinion: Bootleg or legit Reprint?

**Might be worth noting that Amazon also seems to have stock.

I think it's legit, it's just newer/reprinted PS2 games come in different dvd cases than the old ones. I ordered a new copy of new Tales of Legendia/Abyss from amazon and noticed the same thing.

I think it's legit, too, but the case seemed pretty subpar. Happy to buy them up, though.

So the Tales of... games also got reprinted? Wonder what else did. I posted on AtlUSA's facebook page asking for a Rule of Rose reprint lol.

I don't know when the last reprint was but I got em both on amazon for around $30 each.

A way to tell the difference between the newer dvd PS2 cases and the old ones is open up the case. On the old ones when you open them up there's a memory card holder above the disc on the right, on the newer ones the memory card holder is removed and you'll just see a PS logo on the top right in the interior.

The newer ones definitely feel more flimsy though.

Hmmm.. okay. What are your opinions on buying new? Is it worth it buying some old trashed ps2 with cat fur and dust in the memory card slot, or to buy new?? Aka should I drop 175 bones on a new one???

The SCPH-90001 was the last revision and was made from around 2008 to 2012. Searching for a used one of those is probably the best you are going to do.

not just flimsy but the case mold seemed less clean. Mine had some bits of plastic on the seems like you'd expect from a chinese knock off. That's the biggest reason why I wasn't sure if they were legit.

Another option is to get a fatty with an HDD and use FMCB to boot games off the HDD. That's a bit more complicated though, of course.

Does the case still have the engraved PS logo inside the case above the disc? That's one way to tell.

Depends on what you want. There's a literal mountain of old used ps2 consoles out there, I see them at goodwill all the time. Cleaning up old cheap ones is fine with me.

I've been eyeing a new PS2 slim on Amazon for over a year. It was always $145 through various resellers and shipped through Amazon. But recently, like the last 3 months, the price has been slowly increasing.

I finally order one for myself last week when it was $159.99, can't believe the same seller has raised the price to $174.99 since then. Their stock must be starting run down.

You have to ask yourself if having a brand new system, that no one has ever used before, is worth the $175 to you. For me, yes, it was definitely worth the $160 I paid.

It should be noted that the PS2 is approaching its 15 year anniversary. This is the point at which most games start to really appreciate due to the people who grew up with the console having real buying power. Especially in this digital age, this will ring true. I strongly recommend that anyone who wants something rather rare like a new PS2 move to jump on it sooner rather than later, 'cause I can't see prices dropping any time soon.

PS2's were pretty well made. If you can get a late model slim from an adult owner I would think you'd be OK for quite a while. And as someone said there's a mountain of them out there. Take your time and find a nice one. Should've be too expensive.

It's been little over a year since I posted a pic of my PS2 library, so I thought now would be a good time to pop back in and post a little update.

My current PS2 collection

I am somewhat obsessive about my retro-PS2 consoles / accessories and personally, I've had the best luck with purchasing boxed phat PS2s.

Someone who has kept their PS2 phat boxed in the dust wrapping has probably cared for it better than 90% of the used slims you are going to find.

I've found them in mint condition (which is what you want) for good prices, too. For example, I picked up a mint Network Connector Edition Phat with two mint Memory Cards and a super clean DS2 Controller in box for $50 cash here in the SF Bay Area off of CL.

I've had less good luck with buying slims, tbh. I don't think slim = guarantee of fewer problems.

And, yeah, any PS1 or PS2 that looks at all grubby, in any way = avoid.

You know brand new official PS2 controllers are still fairly widely available. I picked one up last year for about $30, seems to have gone up a bit since them, but certainly better than buying any used controller even if it seems fairly clean (peoples hands are grossssss).

Yes, I've got a couple of those, boxed, as well. The semi-see-thru color versions (graphite for example) are really great controllers, and always had a better feel to me, but they are a tad less durable compared to the stock solid black ones. (The DS1 versions of these...the clear see-thru...are absolutely great, too.)

I've had very good luck with used controllers (which I always clean top to bottom...and with a q-tip into the d-pad...so the previous user factor is reduced to wear and tear, not germs).

I'd say some of the ones I've come across are just pristine, and way better than the ones, say, that I leave out for couch co-op with friends. (ie. Similar to the quality of PS1 and 2 merch/games I've bought from Japan, which has been pretty awesome.)

It's not like they haven't been used, but more that whoever owned them didn't snack while gaming, basically, and respected their electronics.

Again, SF Bay Area is a bit of a cornucopia with this stuff because while there's a ton of janky, overpriced, beat-up stuff on CL, there's also plenty folks who are serious gamers who jump on CraigsList mostly to pass things on when they trade in, up, or simply move on.

Btw, I purchased the Sega Saturn Controller adapter for PS2 that the guy sells on Ebay and it worked out great value for the $$. (Legit, and helpful seller.) It's best for 2-D games, and arcade collections and shmups. I haven't noticed any lag at all. And, yeah, there's somebody else on Ebay selling new Saturn pads in groups of two. Had good luck with those, too.

Between the OG DS1 digital controllers, Saturn pads, DS2, light gun and a couple arcade sticks I'm in good shape on the PS2, but I'm missing the Namco NegCon and Arcade Stick, which I've always had my eye on but never bit on.

Any GSes that had them liquidated them for dirt cheap. I got one for like $3 a year or so ago.

I will post my "PS2-collection" when I have time. I have scavenged the market for cheap stuff and found:

1 barely used PS2 slim SCPH - 75004
1 brand new factory sealed PS2 slim SCPH - 70004 (got it cheap from a non-gamer who had won it in a contest)
2 factory sealed controllers original - Europe
1 factory sealed controller original - Asian
10 factory sealed memory cards original (went for $2 each)

There is some more stuff that I don't remember just now.
I did not plow down much money for this, but don't know why I got all the stuff to be honest.
Will probably just sell it down the line.

Now, I wish that I had been more active on securing games for the console. They are getting harder to find by the day...:(. The price on some games are skyrocketing.

What had been your guys experience with amazon warehouse consoles? Pretty good shape? Do I pull the trigger?

I had a bad experience earlier this month and returned the console to Amazon:
So I bought a used PS2 from Amazon Warehouse for $80 and it was described as "Like New" condition.

Bullshit.

I just received it at my office. Sure, it includes the original box and manual/pamphlets. But everything was just throw inside the box with no wrapping/protection. The system, cords and controller were all dusty and have an odor. To top it all off; the dual shock 2's rubber cord is torn and shows fraying wires.

I'm glad I ordered this through Amazon, it's going back. I'll just cough up the dough, $160, for a brand new system.

So YMMV. But of course Amazon has a hassle free return system, so you'll be taken care of if the console isn't up to your standards.

How are og DS1 different than the DS2 and what's the benefit?

I have an original dual shock and the original ps1 controller (no analogs) that came with my ps1 from 97 and I can say that the sticks on the og dual shock are looser and I actually kind of like it. The dpads are much stiffer, prefer the newer ones and the buttons are not analog so they feel a bit more "clicky" to me, I guess is the word best used to describe them. I use that controller when I play MMX collection or 2D games. The L2 and R2 buttons on the original non-analog ps1 controller are the same size as the L1 and R1 buttons.

Wow. I don't remember the original PS1 controller at all. I only remember I bought an Ascii Pad for it because the SNES one was so awesome, but the PS1 version sucked. I still have my PS1, but no controllers for it.

Completely unrelated: Does anyone have any suggestions for capturing PS2 footage?

I have an Elgato HD Game Capture 60 that I'm able to use with my PS2 (PS2 connected to AV receiver via component, AV receiver to Elgato via HDMI). The problem I have is that the Elgato software sucks with a 480i signal. I either get downsampled 640x480 at 30 fps, or 720x480 at 30 fps with combing artifacts.

I've tried Open Broadcasting Software, which handles deinterlacing well and can do 60 fps, but I can't get a good quality recording out of it during high-motion action, even at ultra high bitrates. Everything I try looks like low-quality JPEG compression.

Is there some other software I should be aware of for recording locally?

Startech Pexhdcap with AmarecTV. It's what I use and it works perfectly with high quality footage at 60fps, and that capture card does deinterlacing itself as well.

Thanks. Unfortunately, my PC is mini ITX and does not have any internal expansion slots.

Regarding the PS2 controller, I want to advocate my favorite controller, the Logitech Action Controller.

I bought it because I really dislike the D-Pad on the DS1/2 controllers and having a wireless controller for both my PS1/PS2 games is a huge plus.

From what I've read, this was the only "Officially Licensed" third party controller for the PS2, and I think the quality shows that.

Buttons are glossy vs. matte on the DS1/2, analog sticks feel very responsive, has the ability to toggle vibration, battery life is great (didn't need a change through an 87 hour Persona 3 run), and the D-Pad makes the whole controller worth it.

There are some drawbacks though, the first controller I purchased via eBay had sync issues and wouldn't connect to the receiver. Apparently as these things age they can forget the receiver they're partnered to and it's impossible to repair them. Anyway, just a word of warning if you buy one try to get one new (they're still around) or one that's been tested. BEWARE of buying a receiver/controller separate because I don't think they're guaranteed to work together.

On a smaller note, there appears to be a revision at some point on this controller (evident by the right four buttons going from colored to just white). I'm not sure what the difference is, but I the one I have is the colored-buttons version and I love it.

They over around $20-25 used on eBay, so hunt one down while they're still around!

Best ps2 controller hands down. The size of it is freaking perfect as well!

I believe I have one of these lying around that was sitting in my pile to sell on eBay. If anyone wants to buy it off me shoot me a PM. We can work something out.

PM'd. I had one of these when I owned a PS2 and really liked it. Sold all my PS2 stuff when I got a BC PS3 ... which eventually broke. I'm considering a PS2 again for hooking up via component to my plasma TV for PS1/2 goodness. PS1 gaming on the PS3 has the annoying lag factor.

Forgot to mention that I had to order new PS2 memory cards as I have no idea where my old card is. The last time I used was in 2007 when I copied it's saves over to my (now ylod) 60GB PS3.

And I was all excited to hook up my PS2 over the weekend with component video and optical surround sound.

New cards, the translucent red & blue double pack, will arrive by Friday.

i just got an official memory card that had a bunch of old saves on it. One file is corrupt and won't let me delete it. Is the card safe to use even with it on there? I've got a bunch so can just toss it or whatever.

Where'd you get the pack and for what price? I'm thinking to get some more memory cards but the market seems to be loaded with crappy 3rd party ones.

Will this controller work on PC with a PS2 to USB adapter like this

Corrupt files might just be files written by homebrew programs like emulators that were on a previous system it was used on, so it may not indicate a problem with the card itself. Not sure how you can remove them on a regular PS2 though.

Alright guys, I just bought a blurry pictured slim silver ps2 off ebay with like 8 games including San andreas for $60. Good deal? I hope it's good condition,

if it's in good condition, that's a pretty great deal, yeah. Especially if the other 7 games aren't shit tier sports titles that're worth 50 cents.

Yeah, the games are decent, a couple throw aways, a couple keepers. Hope the system isn't crap. Although, I bought a used GameCube that was all nasty and gave it a thorough cleaning and now it's good as new. The only thing I worry about is it Breaking. Are PS2s pretty easy to fix?

Depends on what's broken. If the innards are okay it should be fixable even if some of true outer plastic has issue.

Some disc errors fixes are as easy as turning a cog wheel inside the drive. Others require new parts or a laser. Just depends.

Well, I just snagged a PS2 Test console. We'll see how this goes. Is there any major difference between official and third party component cables for it?

nice! Which model did you get? And generally the official ones are more likely to be well shielded/higher build quality, but if you can find 3rd party cables that people seem to like go for it. Keep it in mind that PS3 cables work just as well well, so don't bother looking for a intended-for-use-with-ps2 cable or something (though of course it has to be component or something else compatible with the PS2 output).

It's an H50001. Cost me about $20 more than yours but, eh. I figure these things are about to skyrocket in price and it's worth it to me, anyway.

Good tip on the cable. A PS3 one is simple to track down. I'm going to plug it directly into my Panny plasma via component. Hope the IQ is solid.

Now, to track down some of those M2 Sega Ages compilations!

Good stuff. Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about the cable. I think at this point most component cables that you'd get new from a trustworthy source should be of a quality that's satisfactory. Hopefully your TV upscales in a decent way.

I picked up Sub Rebellion, Silpheed, and Battlestar Galactica recently for $11, so I'm happy. I'm actually kind of surprised with myself for never having played Sub Rebellion before as I LOVE submarine-themed games. I haven't tried it yet as I've been busy, but will later today.

Just need to pick up Dropship, and Ring of Red, and my PS2 collection will be where I want it to be.

Have you tried Warship Gunner 2? Really fun game where you can use subs as well.
