PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Good stuff. Yeah, I wouldn't worry too much about the cable. I think at this point most component cables that you'd get new from a trustworthy source should be of a quality that's satisfactory. Hopefully your TV upscales in a decent way.

I remembered I already have a PS3 component cable in storage. Bought it new less than two years ago as I was trying to eliminate lag when playing digital PS1 titles. I went back to HDMI because PS3 games looked wonky.

I picked up Sub Rebellion, Silpheed, and Battlestar Galactica recently for $11, so I'm happy. I'm actually kind of surprised with myself for never having played Sub Rebellion before as I LOVE submarine-themed games. I haven't tried it yet as I've been busy, but will later today.

Just need to pick up Dropship, and Ring of Red, and my PS2 collection will be where I want it to be.

I played thru sub rebellion last year and really liked it. I dearly miss those old mission based vehicle sim-like games and i dig back into old ones constantly. I used to have dropship. Should find it again.

Any Onimusha fans here? I just ordered Onimusha wsrlords and demons siege from JJGAMES. Any impressions? I loved genma onimusha for xbox.

Onimusha Warlords is a great game. It takes the old Resident Evil template circa the REmake era and applies it to a more action-y feudal Japan setting.

The pre-rendered backgrounds still look great to this day, and their use allowed for more breathing room for things like higher poly character models with self-shadowing and stuff. Pretty advanced for 2001.

Try getting Onimusha 2 as well, it's my favorite and as other posters have pointed out the pre rendered backgrounds still hold up and Onimusha 2 has the best of those.

Onimusha 3 is my personal favorite of the series. That CG intro... so amazing. Add in the fact that they ditched the RE tank controls and game catapulted to the top of the franchise, IMO.

I always wanted to get the Hori katana controller, but I couldn't afford it back in college.

I was a fan of the first game (Onimusha Warlords) and wanted to play the later games but for one reason or another I never really got around to picking them up (I've been thinking about eventually picking them up but first I want to work through a good portion of my backlog) when they came out. As for my impressions of Onimusha Warlords, well I thought it was a pretty cool game overall and I really liked the game's horror themes, cinematics (especially the opening one, which is what got me interested in playing the game), how it incorporated real historical characters/events into it's story, and it's overall art direction/design. I also remember having a love/hate thing with
The optional Dark Realm section
and should you decided to tackle it I would highly recommend that you save it/put it off until you're about to enter the game's final area cause it's
a real b***h to get through if you just go straight into it as soon as you gain access to it
.

just ordered a TEST system yesterday, DTL-H50001. Everything I read indicated that it would play any region right out the box, so I hope that's true :x It doesn't have the BB adapter or HDD though.

I was gonna buy a japanese system, but those are around $130 used on ebay. got this for $199 minus $30 in ebay bucks.

getting to be an expensive past month between this and a Framemeister but it's so damn worth it! that thing made games look 10x better and no more input lag from my plasma (down to 1.5 frames from like 4 frames.) also, I stream a lot and PS2 (and xbox+dreamcast) through an el gato's HDMI passthrough might be the ugliest thing i've seen since madeleine albright.

Haha, we're in the same boat. I want a FM so bad but I've spent over $300 this past month on NES games and a Test PS2. Which systems are using with the FM?

PS2 through d-terminal, Dreamcast s-video, and Xbox component to d-terminal. hoping to get a vga/rgb adapter thing for the DC in the future. i think the one i need is Kenzei.

Loved them. Couldn't get into 4 as much, though. Wish they'd bring the series back or remake 1.

Actually, fun fact about the 4th game: the US one is a piece of shit, while the JP one isn't. Remember how Capcom made the US version of DMC3 way tougher than the original Japanese release? Well, they tried to do the same with Dawn of Dreams, except they screwed it up. That's why it takes like an hour to kill every boss, and why it feels unbalanced and shitty as a whole. The Japanese version doesn't suffer from those problems. It's also entirely in English.

BOOM. It's like there's a new Onimusha game now.

I'm actually playing through the game the first time now and was wondering if I was doing something wrong on the big bug boss. I was thinking "Is there some weak point that I'm missing that I'm supposed to hit?" I've been maxing out attack though so it doesn't feel that bad right now.

edit: I actually like the game though, the character switching is kind of a neat gameplay mechanic.

From the Hamster My Game Center Family series of ports?

If it's complete with all the extras and you are unhappy with it, pass that shit along to me :3

^^^ A/V meaning composite?

---

Bought my first PS2 games in years today. Outrun 2006 and Shinobi. Here's hoping for a lag less experience when my console arrives this week.

Ok, so lately my PS3 has turned into a PS2 with HDMI. I recently snatched up Mega Man Anniversary and Mega Man X Collection. Both work great and the value is outrageous when you price those guys out individually on their original systems.

My question: SNES pad is my all time favorite controller. How can I get an SNES controller to work on my PS3 in PS2 backwards compatibility mode? Has anyone attempted this abomination?

Do the Buffalo USB pads work? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002B9XB0E/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Composite vs. D-Terminal comparison on FM

Automodellista Composite

Automodellista D-Terminal

might wanna toy with the color settings and A/D level a bit. the automodelista d-terminal screen is sort of washed out.

I would pass on that and go for a SNES to USB converter. there have to be some good ones out there.

I actually have one of those Buffalo SNES pads. Would either that or a SNES to USB converter work on a PS2??? I'd never considered such a thing.

One of my old mayflash GCN to USB adapters worked on PS3. I think the analog stick wasn't recognized; just the d-pad and the button mapping was unusual.

It wouldn't surprise me if most USB adapter work to some extent on PS3. It recognized HID controllers, afterall.

BC might be a problem as I remember some ps3 arcade sticks were incompatible with PS2 games via BC, so mind that.

last week purchases :

The Taxi is basically Crazy Taxi D3's Simple series version. I was looking for this game since long time and I finally found it at a price I could not regret my purchase even if it is terrible :D

Samurai Champloo is a Grasshopper game, hope I didn't buy it twice cause actually I can't remember all the 70 titles I left in my home country, I just remember I was looking for it around 4-5 years ago...

I got my Test PS2 in the mail today. Does this look like an acceptable way to ship a console to you guys?

I've had worse. People shove Xbox's into flatrate boxes that they shouldnt fit in with no bubble wrap. Only one has broken so far, unfortunately that is a limited edition.

But the answer is no. It shouldn't be shipped like that.

Yeah I'm pretty pissed about it. Seller has 100% positive feedback on ebay, too. NormalFish, did he ship yours to you yhis way? I won't be able to test it until late tomorrow night.

In other news, brand new PS2 slims are up to $189.99 on Amazon. Damn.

I really should have bought one of those when they were coming off store shelves...

Nope. Why do people do this? They could save themselves a potential hassle having to refund someone for a busted item, but "ehh... Fuck it" I guess is what they say.

I guess some people just dont think delivery services are that rough with stuff / the console is ultra strong. Both are waaaay off.

Well, he did write FRAGILE on both sides, lol.

So I actually tested it briefly last night. It works. No issues and nothing concerning jumped out at me. We'll see what happens on a longer play session and over time.

How do you all suggest I leave feedback on this one?

good god, I hope mine doesn't arrive like that today!

That's a tough one, since it works. Neutral feedback saying the guy through an expensive system in a box with a few packing peanuts, maybe? was any side of the console flat up against a side of the box or where there enough in there to keep it from bumping on all sides?

I was thinking neutral. It works. It was shipped with a baseline minimum of effort. The shipping cost was reasonable (a couple bucks less than it cost him). He's shipping several of these test consoles so I feel like I need to let others know.

in that case, yeah, others do need to know. if it was some random who normally sells children's clothes or something, it'd be more understandable....or not, who the hell would ship an expensive console like that? oh, ebay.

it wasn't far off from that. I wasn't terribly happy about the way he shipped mine either, but it had no damage or issues so I didn't make a stink of it. If you see dings or scratches on yours, you should complain one way or another, though.

So which is the best Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game on PS2?

The last one I clearly remember was 4, and 3 was really awesome. I'm in the mood to pick up a THPS game and a copy of SSX 3.

Been playing Sega Rally 1995 on PS2 again tonight. It's so nice having an arcade perfect version in the home. It's even got 480p support and resolution options! Weird that it only got released in Japan.

I'd say 3 or THUG2 (if you can bear it being kinda Tony Hawk's Jackass Skateboarding). Although I will admit that I never played the first THUG or what came after American Wasteland because I played all of them on PC.

I don't know if it is mechanically the best, but the one I have replayed the most and like the most is THUG1. Game had a decent story and didn't go full derp like the second one. How many skating games can claim to have one of the most hated antagonists in all of video gaming?

anyone got recommendations of good import sellers in the USA on ebay (or otherwise)? PS1+PS2 games a plus.

also, this test console is amazing. way better than chipping/swap discs/etc. Having something that easily handles both PS1+2 is great.

ah, so TEST system lets you play region free on both systems? what about CD-R's? man, that must be handy
yes, but you have to master them first....and speaking more of that probably brushes up against some rules :p

the only thing they don't play are dvd movies. oh noes

Plays all PSX/PS2 discs, any PSX backup, and mastered PS2 backups. It's pretty great. Only issue I have with mine is the lack of FMCB compatibility (and I think this is on the way)

what else would you need to do on it with fmcb? just want usb loading?

HDD/USB loading would be pretty great, yeah. And I'm not sure how to run emus off a disc.

**This reminds me. Is there a way to apply a patch to a pressed PSX disc? For example, could I apply an english patch to a japanese PSX game disc without making a backup? I realize this is the PS2 thread but I figure it's relevant given the discussion.
