PS2 Appreciation & Celebration Thread, long live the King!

Hey all, I've a quick question for you. A buddy of mine sent me an American PS2 Slim, it didn't come with a power cable. Is it safe to use a UK PS2 Slim power cable on the US model or would I require a step down converter?

What kind of PS2 Slim? The one with external or internal power supply?

There are PS2 slim with internal PSU? Damn, I'm on my third external PSU after the first two have fried (one original and one chinese). How reliable are they? I wish I could get rid of that massive brick.

Yup, SCPH-9000X.

Much like the 7000X (external PSU), they are multi voltage.

Doesn't that depend on which one you get?

Honestly? I've yet to find concrete evidence. I've read they're all multi voltage like the external PSU was but I've yet to try one. Should have tried my 90003 with 100V when I had it. ;p

car boot sales

You get crap all at boot sales. Everyone is too savvy now, stupid internet.

Plump up the £20, they're worth it.

Also that shmups thread seems to have been deleted. SD card solutions seems cool, what about CF?

One thing I'd like to do is get a software that is modified with the correct load timings so that games like IIDX and DDR don't screw up, as they do with HDLoader.

Also doesn't help that both of my consoles don't support FreeMCBoot. lol

they were £15 a couple months ago but they've jumped up to £30 now unless it's a cheap chinese one and looking at the american listings they're like $10-$15 which i would do but i don't wanna risk it on being hit by customs

The days of finding good deals in the wild are at an end I'm afraid. If you do, its the result of a lot of energy and time that would be better spent doing other things.

I'm an eBay guy, convenience and prices are competitive to tradional retail these days.

Nice. Been playing dead souls on ps3 myself.

Read this as Dark Souls at first so I was like, lol alright

How's Y:DS? I've heard mixed things but I can't wait to play it - I know that the villain of Y2 is one of the main characters so I figured I would play through that before playing it.

It's still gels like a yakuza game. Lots of character specific missions, similar to 4 in a way. The story dosent make a whole lot of sense most times but its a wacky zombie flavoured yakuza game at its core.

And I certainly can't predict future value but that's one game I'd jump on sooner rather than later if you're interested. Comes recommended if you liked 4

Playstation 2 is awesome! I think I'll be getting a PS3 with PS2 compatibility soon.
Good luck with this model in pristine condition. My fat died 2 years ago (had it from the European launch) besides emulation in few/many games was broken. Better buy PS2. No problem with BC and you can always buy wireless gamepad, too.

The European launch PS3 has software BC anyway and it is TERRIBLE.

The Japanese and American ones have hardware BC which is supposedly better. Anyway, if you wanted that PS3 fixed just get a BGA re-ball.

A chipped PS2 is obviously the better solution though as you say. Better yet, a debug.

I lucked out and got first-party PS3 component cables for 50 cents at a yard sale. They're compatible with PS2 and they work well.

RGB will give you slightly better color separation than component video, but unlike component, RGB won't support progressive scan or higher resolutions like 1080i on games that support it like Gran Turismo 4 and Valkyrie Profile 2 JP.

Also, you can't play DVDs over RGB but you can with component. I have some 90s and early aughts anime on DVD and they look darn good over component to my Trinitron CRT.

In the end, I went with component for my PS2.

Actually, slim machines can play DVDs via RGB - I think the macrovision (or whatever it is called) was stripped from later system software. Or you could use a modchip on earlier machines.

On my LCD I use my official PS3 component cables, on my CRT I tend to use my official PS1 RGB cables as they're more flexible than the official PS2 RGB cable.

I should buy some RCA to BNC so I can use component cables on my 20M4E anyway though. Want some for Wii, Xbox and GameCube too.

I would be interested to hear more. Would it be lagless or near that? I could move the PS2 to my room since I have a TV that only has an antenna plug in there but also a CRT monitor.

okay, did a bit more research. It actually isn't a direct conversion. I always forget that Component is an oddity. Seems like there are some good converters, though.

No photos because I'm in the team getting back from the city, but bought myself Black and Gungrave: Overdose. Dunno if the latter is any good, but it's not really a standard game to see in a store and it won't be worse than Oneechanbara anyway. :-P

Today i modded a ps2 slim into a fully portable tate ps2 shmup station.

well not exactly modded but hey! i love it :D

Kinda late for the party. I own one of those last year. Decent screen for the PS2. Might sell it with the Ps2 one day as I am consider to sell my collection soon.

I always thought the image looked awful compared to my old PSone screen from Sony. My brother still has one kicking around I think. Used it to play IIDX in college one time but that's about it.

Damn, the different horizontal and vertical sensitivity in Black really is annoying. Other than that (and having not that many checkpoints) it ain't that bad.

I just got my RGB cable for the PS2 tonight and holy crap it's amazing.
Guilty Gear X legitimately looks better than BlazBlue sprite wise. It's a mix of me preferring its artstyle, it not having those terrible backgrounds that BB has, and the RGB cable making everything look so clean.

That...looks like a Dreamcast?

EDIT: Caption says as much lol, late night posting ftw. Its funny how far artist conceptions are always from the actual prototype/production.
