PS2 slow down problem...

posted this on GameFaqs, got no answers :\

damn I got this game (Ace Combat V) yesterday (finally) and its just AWESOME!

I didn't play much yesterday cause of the election coverage, plus the fact it was night time and everyone was sleeping (I like playing my games with LOUD music)

Anyway I fired it up again this moring, restarted the game and got to the third stage (where you have to protect the carrier) and I noticed some HUGE SLOWDOWN!! Now this is pissing me off!

It happened while I was playing and then it happend again when I was watching the replay (for the same stage, this time it lasted 5 - 10 secs)

First of all isn't this game suppose to be LOCKED at 60 FPS? Has anyone else noticed any slowdown?

Second this happens sometimes with my PS2; in summer I was playing BURNOUT 2 and that game is pretty much locked at 60 FPS, started a race and the game just randomly started lagging. Restarted the race then it was fine.

I have noticed this with several games including;
Burnout 3 (only happened once in Road Rage mode, but the game is also Locked at 60 FPS excluding at Crash mode)
Sly 2

Does anyone know how to fix this problem? is it a voltage issue? Is there too much dust inside the lens?

No clue...

From what I've played of AC5, it was a rock solid 60 fps. I also know that Burnout 2 is just as solid...

I can't imagine what the problem is, though...

Install the games to a hard drive then. I sound like a broken record, but it really is great.

Installing Time Crisis 3 to the Hdd via HDLoader eliminates the slowdown that occurs in some stages :)
i.e. shooting a grenade round at the 3 barrels with 5 enemies standing about, and the rest...

You should get yourself a kickass headphone. I've seen relatively cheap ones from Grado while I was in the states.

What sort of slowdown? A while ago my ps2 suddenly stopped reading DVDs altogether. The disk started spinning, I heard some "clicks", then stopped and back to step one. I managed to start The Getaway a couple times, but eventually the clicking thing came up and it played like a scratched LP more than a slowdown, but the effect might be similar. I opened the brick, cleaned the DVD lens (below the CD lens) with a little bit of alcohol and so far it works.

If what you're experiencing sounds like that give it a try, but be careful. I can't think of what else could be, it's weird :(.

ok the image quality gets worse and the game randomly slows down even if there is nothin happening on screen (one or two planes flying by etc)

Do those lens cleaning discs work with ps2?

They did not work with our SCPH-30001 PlayStation 2 much (which is why last month we got a new SCPH-50001).

Funny you mentioned this. I just experienced this problem about 2 hours ago. Got a loss in image quality during one of the replays and mission debriefings. This happened only once though
