There are a few reports of this on the official Sony forums too. Sorry to hear it, but I'm glad I always wait.

Yep. Same here. I think everyone who is planning to update MUST backup their files. My safe files are still present, but my brother's files are all gone.

Ooh, a PS3 thread!

Hey GAF! I just got a hold of this deal at NCS!

http://www.ncsx.com/2007/072307/ps3_60g_n4.htm

It means I bought a 60gig Japanese PS3 for 260€ including shipping. Thats a great deal, no? I'm just wondering if I'll experience any problems with online play/the sony store because I'm in PAL land..and this one has Japanese firmware.

I know the games are region-free, so thats a great plus.. !

You got a gimped console: whenever you play a multi-region game, you're gonna get the censored Japanese version. No decaps for you. :(

Quoted myself because I fell at the end of the last page.. I'm really nervous that I won't have full online compatibility.. I know I'm already drawing from the short straw concerning censorship.. is there any way to circumvent that?

No way to circumvent it. You will be able to create a Euro PSN account, or for that matter any other country PSN account. IIRC, some games also use the region of the console (not 100% sure on this; I might be confusing this with the region of the game) to determine which servers to connect to (Resistance did this before the ww servers).

That's true. Many games have every region (or near every region) on the disk. For these games, the version of the game that is played is based on the hardware region. For these games, you will need to play online in the region the game is from. You will still be able to play online. Just make sure to make a PSN account for the region the PS3 is from so you can play these games online.

Also, the PS store will remain the same, etc.

Thanks everyone for the info, one more question..

What about HOME? Will that be bound by the software you download, or the hardware you play it on?

They updated the PlayStation blog:

The link on the SCEA website is now live, you can get the full info on firmware 1.90 here. Also, I noticed a lot of your comments were directly related to accessing XMB features in-game. We understand this is something you want and we are working on it. For the sake of keeping all the comments below on topic, please understand that we hear this request and are working toward a solution. When I have some more info to share on this, know that I will do so here on this blog.

What the hell happened to my accounts? I cannot get into the PS store with any of my accounts :(

Did you download the FW update? You can't sign into PSN unless you have the most recent firmware installed.

Anyone having issues getting into the Playstation Store since the update?

My PS3 connects to PSN fine, and I can use the web browser.

When I click the Playstation Store icon, there is the "Please Wait..." screen, then it takes me to a log-in screen. Underneath "Sign in" it says "login.error.unknown"

After I put in my username and password, there is another "Please Wait..." screen, then it takes me back to the sign in screen.

I've tried restarting my PS3, and signing out of PSN and back in.

What?

Same here wtf.

US store works for me, but neither the UK or JP store work right now.

Also, noticed that with this firmware update you can type directly into web form fields and such WITHOUT the on screen keyboard popping up now. Finally. Posted this from the PS3 :)

wait, people using the US version of NGS on a Japanese console aren't getting head decaps? I'm using both the JPN version of game and system, so obviously I'm seeing the censored version.

Yep. But for some odd reasons it works only when you set the video output res to 1080i or 1080p. WTF. Why not 720p too?

What?
That problem is present since a couple of days before the update. I had the same problems with my Japanese and Euro accounts. I thought that Sony started banning those accounts, but after a while everything came back to normal.

So can someone tell me how your supposed to be able to change the video settings while playing a game?
I was just trying to play rainbow 6 vegas and i remember i had it set to 1080p, i had to exit the game to change it.

not sure if its mentioned, but i found my favorite feature. I can finally cheack and send messages WILE BROWSING. oh hell yeah.

That does work.. ha. Had no idea since I never tried.

TTP...that's pretty odd about the on screen KB@ 720 and below.

And more and more KB keys seem to wok. f5 reloads, f2 brings up url bar. pg up down, home and end work properly.

what's the Home button on the kb?

Above "End" on most KBs. Jumps to the top of the screen.
Oh and the JP and EU PS Store probs seem to be gone. Must have been connectivity issues.

They need to add this for PS3 games, too (I think, at least) but you can only do that for PS1 and PS2 games at this point.

No offense Cmagus, it sucks but I have no sympathy.
When dealing with information you dont want lost and a harddrive, you should have it backed up, which is painfully easy to do with the PS3.

I guess I have to call bullshit here unless there is some configuration option I'm missing.

The Backup Utility isn't terribly smart, and for some reason thinks I need to backup 15GB of data (which I can only guess would mean it insists on doing a full backup of music/photo/video in addition to saves and the like.) Plus it won't recognize USB enclosures (at least the variety I have on hand.) So much for easy backups...

An external USB hard drive needs to be FAT32 formatted.

It would be nice if they had a "back up save" option, in addition to the "backup everything" option. You can copy any individual file off of the PS3 pretty easily.

I was just able to do it onto an external HDD. What sucks is that it doesn't recognize all the media I have on my external HDD.

They should do it with a small check list that allows you to decide what to save and what not to save.

after the update, there's a dog in my ps3

pswall5.jpg

please advise

now, how long before we get animated wallpapers? at least one that changes to a different picture in a specified amount of time? let's gooo sony

uh no.
It is easy.
Insert any; thumbdrive, USB external harddrive, SD chip, Ipod via USB, or any another cards the PS3 reads.
Go under saved data utility, hit triangle on whatever you want to copy and copy to desired device.

Maybe Sony can add an option to create a 3rd partition on larger drives for backup purposes. I just backup all my game saves to a thumb drive and then to my pc. Is there any way to backup the Browser's Bookmarks?

Not specifically. You gotta do the whole HDD backup.

Fun with individual copy? :lol No thanks.

The FAT32 advice elsewhere, thanks. I will give that a shot.

I don't have much on my PS3 so I just need to backup my game saves. I use a memory stick and copy over the files individually, doesn't take long really.

Now I have to remember to do this before every firmware update, and to connect the controller with a cable in case something goes wrong. I just know I'll forget to do both.
