PS3 Home Official Thread

Uhm.. the Japanese Beta isn't working either. I just updated to 1.3 but it won't go pass the loading screen (It says there was an error connecting to the servers).
Maybe it's coming soon then... for the rest of us. Be prepared, the unwashed masses are about to come up in your HOME and straight fuck it.

5pm Easter time? ...if so, that would be 1 or 2am my time! ;0
If it's Easter time then we've got a hell of a wait on our hands.
No?

Thats because they are not done doing server stuff...

It should be up between 6:07 PST and 11:59 PST ;)

Anywayz: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board?board.id=ps3home

Seriosuly :lol
So it should be ready in 53 minutes, then? Or even earlier...

Well, I'll wait. Though it pisses me off how they just locked Home with Japanese only. If I want to talk to friends in Europe or America, it takes forever to write any sentence.. ughh..

Is this true? Within the hour? If so, I guess I'll just wait for it...

Actually he said PST... But I can't see why the Japanese servers would go online at the same time as the American one, seeing how they are not connected by almost any way...

Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg speaking to Kotaku:

What Home to me feels like is Second Life for hardcore gamers, it doesn’t feel like it broadens the experience and invites people in. When they unveiled it, it seemed innovative. I think what's happened is now here we are a couple of years later and we feel beyond that.

It feels like 2005 tech in 2008. I'm not sure that’s what people want.

http://kotaku.com/5106920/microsoft-prepared-for-the-winter-of-our-economic-discontent

I wouldn't expect Major Nelson to tout anything Sony does, and I certainly don't think everyone has to like Home. But these specific points border on factual inaccuracy. From the minute you're dropped into Home, it's clearly not a "hardcore" experience. And "2005 tech in 2008"? Is he fucking crazy? The graphics alone look as good as some AAA retail games. And then there's the streaming video, persistent spaces, pick-up multiplayer games...

Home certainly isn't perfect, but it's the best attempt I've seen at bringing social networking into a 3D environment.

And then there's the streaming video

Streamed? Since when? (not streaming as in youtube streaming)... and if you look at posters all around Home they do scream placeholder quality wise (or at least I hope so)...

The distinction between what Home does in the beta and what Youtube does is insignificant. Look at your browser cache for proof. The main difference is that Home video quality is far better which takes longer to download.

I hope they fix that indoor pool glitch before they let the normal people in.

I'm kinda excited about this...I never got in the closed beta, so I'm happy that I'll just be able to check stuff out. However, since I got P4 last night...I don't know when that might happen. :lol

Now, there's concepts in Home I love, as I've outlined before. But Sony does themselves no favours with some of the execution in there right now. I honestly think the Home team probably only has a few coders on it, and swathes of artists. They need more coders, because they seem spread far too thinly, resulting in these terrible gaps in functionality.

I agree with you. I definitely think that they just aren't putting the resources into Home that people think they are. Damn shame too because Home needs to make a good first impression to make people interested otherwise its going fall flat on its face (as it has with most beta testers).

I like the idea of going to an R2 room and talk about the game and form a party and then launch the game from there.

this is what I will use it for mostly....when my friends are not playing, Ill hit up the *insert game here* home space, grab some peeps and head into the game...

No new stuff for the european beta today (means no gamespaces, no air races and no new shops):

Sucks.

:lol

That's really kind of pathetic..

Hopefully there's new stuff for the US. And there's at least new stuff in the mall (to get for free, hopefully).

I guess they're really rushing to get this out before the end of the year, even if it means the rollout is a bit disjointed.

Greenberg's being the attack dog, but I expect Major to show a more level-headed approach. He might even praise it a bit (then add his trademark hidden shots).

I don't care. I hope it's ready when I get home (no pun intended) from work, and I'll try to go into it with an open mind, since I'm afraid a lot of the negative impressions I've read have taken some of the enthusiasm away from my initial excitement. I know Sony will keep making it better, and I'm glad to have Home and NXE both this year. Great time to be a gamer.

Just think of it as a work in progress like Gmail. It's going to be adding a lot of functionality from here on out.

Well, let's do what we do with the PS Store, we go to the US Home. :P

It seems not all items are region free. So your items on your US/EU/Japan accounts may be restricted to that region's characters.

Yes but we can still visit the locations in US Home. It's like going on vacation with no moeny. :D

SCEE have failed Home already. Wasnt expecting anything else tbh.

My mind is still BOGGLING that Home is launching in any territory without even ONE game themed space :lol

And the only one in the US is a third party game!

I mean they were showing spaces for yonks in the media. Beta testers earlier had even got to use them. WTF are they at? It's like they're going backwards.

LOL.

In all honesty, I like walking around Japan home and EU home. EU home gives me a chance to speak to people in French, because I dont know anyone where I live that speaks it and at work I only read/write it.

Do we know for sure whats coming where?

AndyD said:

Unless they're keeping some surprises (ha), then we know pretty much for sure via that Ted guy at SCEE that there's no additional spaces coming to EU this week. The open beta is going to launch just with what the closed beta already had. The most it seems you can even hope for there are new things in the stores :lol

The US should have the Far Cry 2 space and the revamped central plaza, but that seems to be all that's mooted.

So, here's a question; if Home has region locks on content, what happens with a PS3 that has a US and an EU PSN game profile on it?

I'm in the US and my PSN account is a US account. Another housemate is from Europe and has an EU account. WTF happens when we download Home?

Has it been confirmed if we can launch into any game via Home? We better be able to launch any game in the disc tray and and on the HDD.

Everythings linked to your psn id. So you'll just each have two seperate avatars. The EU account will default to EU spaces, your US account to US spaces.

Warhawk's the only supporting game, currently, for multiplayer game launching. You can launch any game 'normally' via the xmb, of course, but they won't all have the hooks for going in with a group.

I have barely used the beta since I was accepted, Home seemed like a great idea when it was first unveiled, but right now I am greatly underwhelmed.

Hopefully when they start adding the gamespaces and trophy rooms, my perspective will change. While the graphics are nice, I don't like that they went for realism with the avatars, they appear zombie-like, and while I can't speak for others, mine looks nothing like me. Perhaps a 360-avatar or Mii approach might have been better. Though I can see why they chose their route.

It sucks, due to the fact that I was looking forward to Home, but for the time being, it doesn't give me a compelling reason to load it up and spend extra time to load a game through it.

If anyone want to use their avatar they made in all the other PSN accounts all you have to do is to copy the save file (it's where all the other game saves are) to the other PSN accounts (Users on the PS3) and then there's no need to redo the avatar.

I thought the Uncharted room was coming out today?

Hmm, sorry, yeah, you might be right. By the sounds of what he says, there should be the FC2 and Uncharted spaces in the US.

Still though. ONE game space from Sony at open beta launch is pretty unexpected.

I just hope there's items to unlock in the Uncharted space..

So european beta testers arent getting anything new today. No new shop, furnitures, airplane game og gamespaces.. suk. Delayed till next week.

There may be new stuff in the mall..just not the diesel/lignet roset stuff. It'd be pretty poor if the only stuff in the shops was the paltry selection that was in the closed beta.

Is there any other kind? I mean, the only thing you can really vary in streaming methods is the size of video-cache. Youtube stores entire videos on your drive, hence cache size is 'unlimited' Actually I can't think of any streaming video web-service that doesn't do that, including streaming videos in PSN :P I can only suppose Home does it the same way, so yes, youtube streaming.

So, huh? Did it become public yet or not? I suspected I would notice it by going to PS Store but I didn't see anything yet.

So, has anyone officially taken responsibility for a NeoGAF club? I would gladly pay to be the founder, but I don't really know if I can handle the responsibility lol...

Please... Home video quality... good... wait... far better then youtube's HD setting?!?

Also, the distinction between the two approaches is VERY significant...

Streaming video = download as you play... as opposed to fully download and when it is done start the video playback...

You really cannot see which one of the two methods is more user friendly?!?

Considering the length of the videos, the fact that you have a non short download, and the quality of said videos (very compressed... huge pixels and low picture quality... and it is not even playing full screen but still windowed [even if you "zoom" on it)... I was going to say that videos are fully downloaded before being played back.

Or maybe it is THAT slow to fill the inital buffer?

Bah...
