PS4 Pro specs revealed - 4.2TF, 8GB GDDR5, up to 310W power consumption

Someone should really edit the headline/op.
The amount of people coming in thinking it consumes 310W is flabbergasting.

The RX 480 is rated at 5+ TF, correct? So we are looking at a 4.2 TF console that is less powerful than a 480, which is considered a "good" 1080p card, meaning it can manage 1080p 60fps on pretty good settings ( high, maybe a few things turned down).

I honestly expected a bit more.

There's no way in hell the pro is doing 4k at playable frame rates and good quality settings

But that is its wattage. It potentially could at maximum draw that amount just as any other appliance could do the same. Few products will display what is actually drawn on average

It's FauxK as another gaffer put it. You should read the leaked document. Or listen to Mark Cerny. They're using new software and new rendering tech to eliminate artifacts and make it look native when it's not.

thats what I meant......310 doesn't really sound that insane, the orignal PS4 was 250....this really isn't as ludicrous as people are making a fuss over it.

Oh, yah. Pretty much. I have no idea why anyone would care about the power draw anyways, other than power draw dick measuring contests.

Is COD:IW seriously running at 2160p60 on this thing? Because that is absolutely insane.

It's doing the same reconstruction everything else is. Base visuals look way ahead of what I've seen of the standard PS4 version as well.

I'm quite pleased with what they've shown visually from all of these games. Very crisp and clean, little in the way of artifacting from the reconstruction and aliasing, and a number of noticeable visual improvements over the standard PS4.

That is the max. power the nt can deliver. The console will never draw that, just like the OG topped out at 155W with a 250W nt.

So is this enough of a bump in specs to help with pop in or other "abnormalities"?

Such as on Elder Scrolls online, many times loading a new area will show other characters as just black shapes until they are fully loaded.

In another spot in the game, there are NPC's which are invisible for a while and then pop in.

As I recall from Witcher, have not played in awhile, so could be wrong, there was a lot of grass and other pieces of scenery which would pop in as you were walking by,

...why? The specs of this thing are exactly what has been reported for months.

Exactly. It actually looks 4K. I never would have thought they could pull it off tbh.

Does it have SATAIII?

A few people are wondering this, myself included, but so far I haven't seen any answers. If it it does, that might push me over the top to commit and buy one. Being able to use an SSD at top speed for today's games and cut down loading times would be a big plus for me.

You are talking about a reference design for a full graphics card board / cooler etc. You look at much higher powered laptops and they obviously are not "fucking huge" in their construction and cooler set up, not an integrated soc solution

No one designs a product to have a power supply that will actually draw it's rated wattage, as that would be silly.

Sapphire Nitro+ is far from reference design

Also high powered laptops not huge? have you not seen laptops lately? The ones with up to date GPU's are fucking massive. Alienware 18, 17, and 15 respectively.......they are all huge for gaming laptops

Agreed, that's the stuff that pulls me in, but then I think of the lack of UHD Blu-Ray support and I pump the breaks a little, and then the fact that I have to buy a 4K TV, which I am actively looking for deals for. It just seems a little half-assed for lack of a better term, but the price is right.

I feel as though the grand compromise of basically enforcing a level of parity between PS4 users and Pro users means as a PS4 player, the value just isn't there to motivate me enough to upgrade. If the games are only going to look a little better on the HD TV I have, and if they expect people to upgrade to another $400 box and get a 4K television to get the point of releasing it anyway, the consumer base is too narrow.

Will parents understand the differences enough to buy a new PS4 for their kid if they don't see the draw or change with their own eyes? I'm very skeptical.

OMG "UP TO" 310WATTS!!! .. it's actually annoying that most these posts are concerns about "MAX" power consumption.. which i doubt will be reached.

I hope Sony / Cerny went for 420 teraflops on purpose

and that they release a Pro version of this special edition:

Devs can do whatever they want with the power. Tomb Raider has a 1080p 30fps mode with all graphics settings turned up to ultra. It also has a 4Kpr mode with super high checkerboard rendering, to scale closer to 4K at lower graphics settings.

Dont see people upgrading. Will most likely be the obvious purchase when buying a new PS4. Still, Scorpio really did sabotage this reveal for many here it seems, expectations were through the roof.

is this what they are talking about? from DS site

"According to Hastings there are also a couple of “extra little pieces of hardware” in the console that are “really clever.” The GPU isn’t just over twice as powerful in core horsepower, but there are a few “extra twists” that help it to achieve “4K-level of fidelity.”"

"Van Beek explained that PS4 Pro supports supersampling on normal HDTVs, helping in removing shimmering and aliasing, and creating a much crisper image even on a normal 1080p screen. Hastings added that you get “a sense of the detail” and “temporal stability” that is hard to achieve at standard 1080p, because you’re packing more information in each pixel, and the image quality improves. It’s not the same thing as in actual 4K, but it’s a noticeable improvement and it makes a difference."

The answer to why is this great post:

The Neo is a perfect example of enthusiast buying into a self perpetuating narrative they created. Ever since it was confirmed that devs were using a new PS4 model and we got specs everyone should have known that those specs were locked.

But because MS had a higher number Sony had to counter because engineering takes seconds and the Neo just has to have the biggest epeen in the console space. In reality the Neo is an opportunistic piece of tech to capitalize on chip manufactures selling better GPUs at almost no price increase with the added benefit of selling your console at a higher price and getting some synergy with PSVR.

I'm glad they are, I hope developers continue this. I'm skeptical, however. I want to hear more from devs and how they can elevate vanilla PS4 games I've invested in already.

This is the new Razer Blade with a GTX1060 inside it. It is the same desktop version with a slightly reduced clock. It is not huge.

Yes, that's 4Kinda
Cough PR Cough

As we so lovingly dubbed Microsoft's efforts to reach 1080p on Xbox One with some of their titles.

Hey! My buddy owns one........they get hot as HELL under loads without the cooling pad he has, about 83Celcius up to 87 under extreme cases. But, its the tradeoff

I think people's reaction to this is negative because of the expectations of this thing. I don't see a problem with Sony targeting the high end 4K TV market for console gaming. If you don't have a 4K TV and the improvements aren't worth it to you, then don't buy it. It's weirf that people are getting mad at something this thing was never marketed as being, it was only made up in our heads because of rumors and hype.

One mode of RoTR is 4K native.

So devs can choose go 4K native.

Yeah, I'll wait for the Digital Foundry verdict.

Granted they are using wasteful max setting, but it's also only 1440p. The 470 has more raw TF than the PS4. I think we can expect 4Kinda here, but hey I could be wrong.

Off T: I see a lot of people using 4Kinda. I came up with that. I probably wasn't the only one, but I definitely never saw it before I typed it up. lol

I was planning on getting a Neo because I thought, assuredly they were going to try to compete with the Scorpio? Maybe not fully compete, but at least better than the XB1S. But now...maybe I'll just grab a regular PS4 during a BF sale. Especially since it doesn't come with a UHD Bluray.

What was Sony thinking with that decision?
