PS4 Pro specs revealed - 4.2TF, 8GB GDDR5, up to 310W power consumption

Still doesn't give a great deal of info about what;s happening inside.

310 watts is very high considering how much the rx 480 consumes. The Jaguar CPU even though overclocked should not consume anywhere near as much as 100 watts.

edit: This thing might not even be on 14nm or 16 nm process node.

So this thing is a bit weaker than an AMD 470. I wish GPU reviews on these cheaper GPUs used more reasonable settings so we could get a better idea of what the PRO will run like. Someone needs to lock down a 470 to 1040MHz and run some tests.

I think the OG PS4 will do me for now, will hold out and pick one up in 12 months or so, or when/if my day 1 dies.

Yeah PS4 for exclusives. PC for everything else.

I thought there were legal limits on how much power these could chew? I thought Jeff Rigby was giving figures below 250 no?

Yea 310 is fucking massive.

Thats like my pc with a 3770k, and a 1060gtx on full blast.

Again and again... It doesn't consume 310 watts, that's just what the power supply is capable of. And that figure always has to be a lot higher than the actual device utilizes. Has been this way for any PlayStation (and other devices) ever.

Well, I'm off bed. I don't have the will to go through another round of 310W!? WAT!

PS. To those questioning the 310W what do you think of the slim's 165W? that is 15W more than the original PS4 's max!

Its 400 dollars .... lol
Do you expect a high end PC? If so just build youself a gaming PC or wait for scorpio which will prob be 600$+
Everyperson who is like oh who cares or I dont care then hey dont buy the system buid youself a gaming PC and BAM you have the best of the best OH and you should replace you graphic card once a year which will cost you 500 and up. GOOD LUCK!
Scorpio being $600 would be an absolute joke because nothing we know of the specs would indicate that and who needs to replace their video card every year? People who bought a ~$325 video card two years ago still have a card that's faster than what's in the "PS4 Pro", upgrading would be more like every 18 months and you definitely don't need to do that or spend $500+ to get something now that will greatly out perform the "Pro" also the Scorpio when it comes out.

Damn, better GPU than my 970, impressive.
The 970 is a two year old card at this point...
Kinda isn't actually. It is more like a "wash".

A 970 is still faster though. Not by a large margin but still faster.

The leaker got pretty much all the details right.
Design, size being roughly 2 cm bigger than original PS4.
310W is the PSU of the power supply I think.

The power consumption is a bit surprising.

There's no way it's on a 16/14 process. It seems it isn't ready for console yet (yield wise, price wise, unit wise...) - otherwise Scorpio wouldn't be a year out.

Interesting move by Sony to get their upgrade out earlier at the expense of power consumption / heat / etc - my bet is it pays off.

Yep, didn't say it was under, said it's close. Like people saying the Pro is to the Scorpio.

But wild the One S has the player in it, while a member of the BD group who started it all doesn't. Guess they wanted to hit 399 price point.
When 1.4 TFs is close to 4.2 TFs... c'mon.

1.31 XB1
1.40 XB1 S
1.84 PS4
4.20 PS4 Pro
6.00 Scorpio

Is the high wattage due to the chipset? Would the Scorpio theoretically be lower draw on a new (smaller) die?

Do we know if the 1080P enchanced version will have better texture and effects than the 4K mode? (at least for Tomb Raider)

I wonder if they chose to forgo the die shrinkage in order to meet release date on time.

There's no other explanation to why they would choose to keep it.

Didn't we know all of this? Didn't we know that it was a mild bump and not a huge leap? I mean don't get me wrong, that was quite literally one of the worst press conferences Sony has held in years, but the modest increase is what it is.

Yay cheap price?

Well it's like a $100 bump in price. So I'd say a good deal.

So if this is the price point for that much power, then the Scorpio must be like $500?

Just preordered on Amazon. That small FF XV clip on the pro was amazing 😭

Pretty much. For me to jump into current gen with this low of a price is just perfect.

Dumb question - with a better GPU you could choose a trade off between higher resolution and better effects/textures. If you use a PS4 pro on a 1080p TV, are you going to only get better framerate than on PS4? Or do you think they'll increase the graphical settings (further even than if played on 4k?)

Or do we have no idea?

Some games will support supersampling for 1080p sets.

So yes, it is a possibility.

You'd think they'd be able to do 1080 60 with maxed effects.
Looks like with the same details/effect of the OG PS4 Tomb Raider will run at north of 45fps.

The game will have 3 modes:

- 4K 30fps with same OG PS4 detail/effects
- 1080p 45-60fps with same OG PS4 details/effects
- 1080p 30fps with max details/effects

Unlike on PC where YOU get to choose, on PS4 the devs will choose for you.

So it's going to vary. Some might not do anything at all, and the game will simply run at a more stable frame rate. some might open it up to 60 from 30 on Ps4. Some might improve graphics settings.

It's going to vary from game to game.

Well it's like a $100 bump in price. So I'd say a good deal.

For an extra $100, it suits it's price for sure. Seems some people's expectations were far far overboard, expecting actual 4K rendering / jumps to 60fps for everything

You'd think they'd be able to do 1080 60 with maxed effects.

Case and point. No. This is not how performance always scales; and even then "maxed effects" makes no sense as a point of reference and with how different that can be from game to game / platform etc etc

Take the example of RoTR.

Mode 1: 4K 30fps with same OG PS4 detail/effects
Mode 2: 1080p 45-60fps with same OG PS4 details/effects
Mode 3: 1080p 30fps with max details/effects

Devs will give you options and you choose.

Yeah, Sony stated in their conference that I would be loud as fuck.

only kidding!

It most certainly will be loud as fuck. Cooling requirements are going to be high, as is airflow.

The stacked burger design probably has some merit to go along with helping airflow.

One mode of RoTR is 4K native.

So devs can choose go 4K native.

For some games they surely can, for others (the majority) they certainly won't be. They will either upscale or use an upsampling technique as was suggested by Eurogamer, akin to what Valve implemented for VR fidelity changes when lower spec systems can't keep up.

For RoTR, it isn't clear if this is native or upsampled / upscaled. For reference a 5.5TF rx480 can only just manage 30fps with all the bells and whistles. Importantly, the PS4 Pro has the same RAM, and only a slightly higher clock for the CPU.

my RX480 is 225W.........and its fucking huge.....this thing says up to 310. Is that possibly including the breakout box from the VR headset possibly?

prepare for jet engine 2.0......its coming

You're not accounting for the power draw of literally everything else in the PS4. The GPU is not the only thing drawing power -- there's also the CPU and other auxiliary chips.

thats what I meant......310 doesn't really sound that insane, the orignal PS4 was 250....this really isn't as ludicrous as people are making a fuss over it.

Is COD:IW seriously running at 2160p60 on this thing? Because that is absolutely insane.
almost assuredly not...

My i5 and 1070 system with everything else isn't even doesn't break 300W at max load. >.>

For people that built gaming PCs I'm surprised you don't understand the concept of PSU's and how they have a max draw, but you're not always (or ever want to) draw the max power from the PSU...

You are talking about a reference design for a full graphics card board / cooler etc. You look at much higher powered laptops and they obviously are not "fucking huge" in their construction and cooler set up, not an integrated soc solution

No one designs a product to have a power supply that will actually draw it's rated wattage, as that would be silly.
