PS5 Pro developer verdict: ‘I didn’t meet a single person that understood the point of it’

Unlike the Pro and One X, where those console brought 4K to the front, it really does feel like there's less of a need or want for mid-gen consoles this time around.

I agree. The PS4 Pro didn't just help with games running better. Everything ran better. The UI, the game store. Now on the PS5 everything already runs great as far as the UI goes so the boost wont be as meaningful this time around. Still getting it day 1 though.

Devs proved this gen they are not willing or capable to extract all the power from booth closed boxes on the market and so Sony sees the need for hardware upgrades to make a visible difference on people’s screens.

It’s sad, but I’ll take any update over the dire state of this gen’s console GFX. It’s all mostly up resed PS4 quality.

Exactly, and this is just another one to add to the pile. I’m not surprised they’re not excited about it, especially with the performance boost being on the lower end.

Well Xbox will launch their next “console” in two years and will be a $1000 monster but you’re probably not going to notice a difference between ps5 pro because nobody will take advantage of it

That has more to do with a prolonged cross-gen period than anything. We’ll start seeing more games pushing current gen consoles to their limit the next 3-4 years with GTA6 being the most obvious example.

Bullshit, we already see current gen consoles struggling, they weren't really ready for RT to begin with and UE5 titles, despite the hype runs most of the time like shit. So I call bullshit on this one...

CPU isn’t a limiting factor in most games, as 99% run at 60 fps

And those modes tend to look blurry, so better looking version of those 60 fps modes is very much welcome

Also there’s many cases where performance modes dip a bit more, this should easily get them to be closer to locked
For games that are GPU limited, you're right. Dragons Dogma 2 and BG3 are two recent examples of games that are very much CPU bound and additional GPU power isn't going to make them run noticeably better.

I imagine that as time goes on, more games will be CPU intensive as more is going on in the background. Time will tell of course and this is just speculation.

Those games are poorly optimized

More hardware can’t fix poor utilization

And they are an outlier

I get the feeling the “biggest technical leap ever” Sarah Bond 007 mentioned in that interview was in reference to some sort of hybrid hardware + cloud architecture, the “cohesive hybrid compute”. The cloud aspect is what they’ll tout as the leap. From one of their leaked slides:
"Our vision: Develop a next generation hybrid game platform capable of leveraging the combined power of the client and cloud to deliver deeper immersion and entirely new classes of game experiences," one of the slides reads. "Optimized for real time game play and creators, we will enable new levels of performance beyond the capabilities of the client hardware alone." In a slide, Microsoft projects the next-gen console arriving in 2028 with "cloud hybrid games" and an "immersive game & app platform."
My gut feeling is that’s what the “biggest technical leap ever” line was about, not necessarily a $1000 monster of a box.

Not the ones HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 has spoken to
😂😂😂

Yes, that's partly what I'm getting at. Developers should better optimise for the platforms they are building on to get more performance from these boxes. Upgraded consoles with a better GPU won't fix that issue and I imagine we're going to see more poorly optimised games where publishers shove games out of the door.

I mean we don't need consoles or videogames in the first place anyway.

You buy it if you want it. It's better hardware and it's not mandatory to play any PS5 game. Better resolution, better framerates, better ray tracing. That's all.

So much drama over nothing lmao.
Yep, I mean on PC side we have upgrades coming in every year or even more often. Folks who need to upgrade, upgrade. Those who don’t, do not.

And devs somehow manage to target a lot more different configs there.

Last gen you could make a reasonable case that more power was needed.

I don't see that as the case at all right now. The current console is plenty powerful, but needs more games to take advantage of it.

One first party game would excite me much more than this new console, I don't care at all.

The things were said about the PS4 Pro and look at how better that was. 99% of all devs won't have the resources to take advantage of it but, the AAA devs will and Sony will.

Do we really expect Surgeon Simulator 3 dev to care about the PS5 Pro? Construction Simulator devs?

Give me a single reason why we need new hardware. The human eye can't see more than 720p anyway.

Is this a Phil Spencer burner account?

The same people saying we dont need it bought the series X over the S
Nah, probably not but who on earth would pass up more power if you had a choice. Crazy...

So fluctuating fps and shite image quality doesn't exist? I know there cases where the code is just crap and you'd be brute forcing your way to acceptable performance/image quality. But there limits even in capable hands. Especially in multiplatform titles.

The majority don't need it. But many would like to have it.

almost every game now has different settings with performance/resolution/IQ tradeoffs. And lots of gamers are playing on 4K 120Hz VRR screens. Is it that hard to imagine the benefit of more power + better upscaling/frame generation?

It’s about as pointless as the regular PS5 considering most games are cross-gen anyway.

Ok. Answer this question honestly.

If I gave you two consoles (or GPUf you prefer), and told you that you could play your game on one at 720p-1080p@60fps on one, or play it at 1440p reconstructed to 4K + better IQ and graphical features all around at 60fps
But the second console/GPU will cost you $100 more.

Would you see the point in that?

(hint, this is a trick question)

edit: why the fuck would anyone call themselves 60fps on here??????

Pro exists because Sony needs to ensure people won't switch to PC as the gen advances and PCs start to look more and more enticing with things like path tracing and AI features. That said, big part of wanting to play on PC is to play at 60+ FPS, and if PS5 Pro doesn't update the CPU it'll be hard to offer a 60 FPS mode regardless of the increased GPU headroom. Maybe they'll overcome this with frame gen, idk.

Personally I'd only consider getting a PS5 of any kind just to play GTA6 maybe or a FROM exclusive, and I'd sure like to play it at a better performance and image quality than Bloodborne back with PS4.

Sure there's no need for It.😂🤣🤦🏻

I probably imagined the blurry performance modes and the lousy frame rate in some games and that they can't add raytracing during races so you can only have raytracing effects in the Garage.(GT7)

I mean I have kind of proven it to the mods here and its why I get some tolerance from them on some of the things I say
Is there any proof you’ve posted here? Like predictions you’ve gotten right or whatever? I can’t stop laughing at the fact people actually believe some random forum poster is chatting with Phil and Matt Booty in a private chat room.

I agree.
But if its coming im gonna get it- cause hey, its optional and im gonna take the Sony console with the best chance to run games the best.

The PS5 Pro won’t be a magic bullet for 60fps performance just like the PS4 Pro wasn’t.
And it doesn't have to be....

it would be a magic bullet, and a simple fact, for that every game that exists on the current PS5, will perform and or look better on the PS5 Pro in some shape or form.

And that is all it needs to be. Anyone that is saying they can't see the sense or point for something that would cost like $100-$150 more than a base model and that offers that... is either just flat-out lying at best, or a hypocrite at worst.

Why? well, its because that's what CPU and GPU manufacturers have been doing, every single fucking year, for the last... well forever.

I agree with the article that a PS5 Pro 'wont grow the market'.

It's never been about that, it's aimed at guys like me (and you) that already own a PS5 but take their hobby seriously enough to upgrade.

Day one purchase for me.

Nahh, batting .000 on getting anything right, you are allowed to keep laughing

Btw, never spoken to or gamed with Booty but many other present and former Xbox brass

Many here know exactly who my friends are

Its ok though, I get skepticism, I ain't mad

The solution to this dreadful generation is not more power but hey if people believe throwing an additional 600 in the fire can help them why should Sony stop them

If you're willing to spend 70 dollars on a game, but not 100 dollars to make each of those games perform better... I think you have mixed up priorities.

Beyond that, I could never tell the point of buying the XSS instead of the XSX. The price over the life of the product is negligible for the difference in experience you're getting.

It's why I'm so confused by people who cheap out on the TV they buy knowing they're going to watch it every day for 6+ years. They probably wouldn't scoff at a dollar a day for the best tv on the market.

Yeah! You heard the experts guys? It's pointless, DON'T BUY IT. So I can manage to get one on launch day

So have you posted any predictions or anything that’s proven true? I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not with that first line as, like I said, I’m not that in tune with the lore here. It’s just funny to me that a random forum poster can claim they’re chatting and gaming with Xbox execs and there’s seemingly no push back at all, lol.

Ronin is a PS5 game, looks worse than a PS4 game (Ghost of Tsushima). Devs need hardware to boost their games, has never been more apparent than now.
