PS5 : The Future Of Gaming. NeoGAF Viewing Thread. June 11th 1PM PDT/ 9PM BST

What was written below was going to be a private response based exclusively on yesterday's event that was broadcast in 1080 @ 30 (although they later posted the videos at 4K @ 60).

I haven't read any messages since yesterday, so I don't know if any new comments or information have come out.

After the anger I will try to write this as calmly as possible.

I am disappointed with the presentation. It did not seem to me that they have demonstrated the true generational change.

The strange thing is that they have material for it. I don't know why they don't use it. They have dedicated themselves to teaching Indie games, multiplatform with generic engines and the few exclusive ones were with recycled engines. And from GT7 they have not taught any accident or climate change.

That seems good to me that things are saved for later, but damn, then don't call it "The future of gaming" or "obvious generational leap". Call it "appetizer". I've seen better PS4 games than most trailers yesterday. It is true that in 4K things improve, but it still shows that they are recycled engines.

I realize that until a year or two from now we will not see the true visual leap, when games begin to use UE5 natively and Sony make engines that take advantage of PS5.

This game will be released on PS4 this year and looks better than Demon's Souls on PS5.

It is true that it is a multiplatform game and that the images are surely from PC (or PS4Pro), but they could have perfectly made Demon's Souls with that quality.

I really don't understand what they are doing.

They could have taught a photorealistic horror game (well, two) that you screw upside down and they haven't.

The only positive thing about yesterday is that all the trash has been taken from him (I hope). In addition, most trailers are made in 2019. But they have not lived up to expectations. I hoped that everything they showed would live up to what I saw behind closed doors. And it was not so.

Damn, we came from here ...▼

The least expected is this, if you use the phrase "The future of gamming".▼

This is the minimum PS5 needs to start generation. Otherwise, they are giving no reason for people to jump. I don't have the capacity to do it, but I do expect it from your internal studies.

And and the problem is not that it cannot be done. The problem is that they are not being consistent in the names and expectations that they are giving to their conferences. I hope that from here to the exit they fix it in some way. And it is true that what is taught are products in development with room for improvement, but then do not sell it like that.

The only thing they are doing well is "not selling smoke with the trailers".

They could teach things like this▼

And they decide to teach this.▼

At an event called "the future of gamming".

I understand that they should also make room for this type of games, but then give the event another name. Host another event in July called "PS3 Indie Trash Remastered for PS5".

I am a developer and I value the work of my colleagues, it is not a criticism of their work, I know what it costs to do every little piece of their work. What I criticize is the way Sony has to sell it to the public. In my opinion, there is no coherence between the Slogans and what has been shown.

And GT7 ... there have been trailers in the past where the grass moved when cars passed, not even here. Mixing old assets with new assets from megascans ... but if you use megascans for remote areas and recycled assets for nearby areas ... what consistency does that have? That is worth, that it is a recycled circuit, but then do not show it in the conference of "the future of gaming", show a car crashing and breaking into pieces, or make up the trailer a bit. I know that in GT7 I am not going to stop to look at the grass, but by God, do not do a macro zoom to the grass showing those assets from the time of PS3, approach the mountain and show the asset of megascan.

I return to the same thing, it is not a problem of the real capacity, it is a problem of what you decide to show, how and when. But if you put it together with the slogan "the future of gaming" it is logical that the user can and should be disappointed.

How dare they say that they believe in generational changes by showing games that visually (without pausing) could go through games on their own PS4? I do not understand, really.

And the VR?

Wake up Sony! Wake up!

Microsoft is doing better in marketing campaign. And if Sony does not demonstrate its potential before the consoles come out, it will have lost the generation before starting, even if later it releases brilliant games.

I'm going to eat.

Not sure if you're in touch with reality?

Aaron Greenberg's desperate plea for attention is better marketing? Having to reassure the fan base every time Sony announces something?

You have Sony constantly generating millions of positive reactions outside of the vocal minority in this forum. Yet, you think they're doing worse?

Honestly it makes me think what other deals they will have with rockstar going forward, thats a huge company to partner with

I imagine GTAV will be on Xbox Series X at launch as well. GTA Online prints money for Rockstar, they'll want it on both new consoles. Sony has by far a bigger world wide brand so they probably just opted to announce the remaster at their event rather than the Xbox one.

Yea but im even thinking future deals with gtavi etc, prob exclusive content and bundles which again will sell a shit ton of hardware

What a fucking banger of a show.

Best console reveal + games showcase i've ever seen.
PS4 reveal looks like nothing in comparison.

Oh definitely. That's been the norm for a while with the console that's leading in key markets getting some content/timed exclusivity deals. Like CoD new maps etc. being on 360 first last gen when it was dominating sales (discounting the Wii which didn't have mainline CoDs) in North America and the UK and the PS4 having them first this generation at times.

Better then Year of Dreams!?
I wasn't really counting normal E3 shows, but now that I think about it, It's definitely up there. Probably rate it second best.
The volume of games + excellent pacing of the show. Plus the way they did the hardware reveal. So hype.

But the year of dreams was one of those "is this real life????" feels to it.
even though I don't really remember anything except the big 3 announcements.

Exactly. How crazy it is to start a show called the "future of gaming" this way, I spoke about it in a different thread. I think there might have been other reasons, related to number 6

Im thinking that too, i could see a timed exclusive money hat, people will bitch and moan but thats business

We can't always lay the blame with familiarity, developers have got used to developing games to run in 4K, as P.C tech has far surpassed the current generation consoles for a while now.

Yes, but tech like Nanite in UE5 is so efficient to push fidelity even more, although I think PS Studios most of them have that covered, it shows pretty clear with Insomniac and GG.

Yes, in 4K it improves. But my complaint is due to the lack of coherence between the advertised slogan and the global quality of what is shown. Especially when you know what can really be done.

I mean, let's see ... It's as if McDonald's tells you it's going to do a presentation event and calls the event "the future of hamburgers."

Many will expect this ▼
mcdonalds-mcchicken-1.jpg

Logically it's not a realistic hope, since you all know that burgers are not that perfect in the end, so you can really expect something like that. ▼
McD-McChicken.jpg

What I do not consider acceptable is that an event called "the future of the hungry" will get this ▼
B2cQluJCEAATgCj.png

But that's not what makes me angry. What makes me angry is knowing that PS5 can do this... ▼
McCHicken-spice.jpg

...and they decide not to show it.

If they wanted to show this ... ▼
B2cQluJCEAATgCj.png

... they could have given another name to the event.

I do not criticize the quality of what is shown. But the incoherence between what is shown and the slogan.

In my opinion everything should have been Top. And Indie games leave them for an exclusive separate event. But hey, as I say is my opinion, I am human and you don't always have to agree with me. I am an imperfect machine and too demanding.

Man, that one funny comparison, good job :lollipop_tears_of_joy: :messenger_clapping:

For me, I'm 10000% satisfied. It's not about the content shown, but the understanding of what's waiting for us going forward. The games shown are nice and great, but the future is much, much better!

All this talk about power of the SSD and how they will make that up for TF, it was severely lacking . It looked like PS4 pro + visual wise .

And the design of the box hideous, it looks like shit happened, maybe that's why everyone was fired .

Man, what a bummer that I've missed the last two Sony reveals Live. Just catching up. Man Sony has absolutely crushed this. Horizon 2, Demon Souls and Project Athia looks absolutely bonkers.

Kena is also just my kind of game, and people can say what they want, but I think Godfall looks amazing. Great textures, nice character art, amazing particle effects and reflections. There's so much to be impressed with there.

I knew you liked the McDonalds Bo. :messenger_winking::messenger_grinning_smiling:

My dudes and dudettes I have a question that needs answering post haste: Are Destruction Allstars and Godfall F2P titles? Because if so that'd be neat.

4K trailers look really impressive, though not much shown in the way of 1st party, which was the same for Microsoft.

Are both companies holding back until later down the line? Because I wouldn't be surprised if all development is 3-4 months behind schedule due to Covid
Say what?

I don't deny you. I already said that my opinion could be hasty based on personal expectations. Also think that my expectations are different from yours, due to work demands I am used to seeing photorealistic renderings every day. It's hard to be fair in that regard. But hey, I was wrong, I admit it, I shouldn't have judged streaming to 1080 when I'm the first to know that these things shouldn't be judged. I got carried away by the feeling of what I hoped they would teach and didn't teach. But it will come.

Regarding marketing analysis ... As a way, I still think it's very risky, but you're right that the results are overwhelmingly positive for Sony. But just as it went well, it could have gone wrong. But what can I say about them ... they know much more than me about this. I was not expecting the YouTube statistics. Is awesome.

I saw reflections in other parts of the demo but they didn't say they were ray traced.

To be honest I was expecting some additional tech demonstrations but we really didn't get anything there.

There may be a good reason for the lack of mentions. It's either purposeful that it's not mentioned more, or, those speaking in the videos just didn't mention it. Not sure which.

very disappointing that "the future of games" kicked off with the second remaster of a PS3 game and the highlights were a remaster of another PS3 game and a kind of remake of RE4 from PS2...

I guess I'm just too old for this. I still remember well Motorstorm, Killzone, Deep Down and HZD reveals thorough CGI

Of the games shown, which ones do you expect to be VR compatible?
GT 7 and Resident Evil 8 are likely candidates in my opinion, but I really want to play that Astrobot game in VR. Having that limited to flat would be a kick in the balls 😢

Why are you purposely lying? There was a lot of gameplay.

Why don't you read the rest of the thread before accusing someone of lying? For the 100th time, I was talking about Horizon 2, and last time I checked, there wasnt a lot of gameplay for that game shown.

Well you were responding to someone who was responding to others talking about the whole event. And your post was pretty general saying "none of it is gameplay". How else am I supposed to take it?

I found the presentation really good.
(although not exceptional, mainly due to the start with GTAV)

The games are quite interesting and varied.
But, with the exception of the new IPs, and some smaller but still beautiful games like Little Devil Inside, the bigger games had already been leaked (with Demon Souls or RE8) or their announcement was still predictable (as with Horizon 2 or the new Ratchet and Clank).

The console is original and intriguing, but at the same time bulky and massive.
(the biggest console created by Sony)
If on the creative side it stands out, on the purely functional side and instead at a disadvantage against Microsoft.
(that with Series X, although Microsoft has done a minimal job, it also seems to be more synthetic and functional as a form)

[personally Sony's idea was also nice in design, but to stand out best it would have to be at least smaller than how they made it.
Since PS5 is bigger than a PS3 Fat.
(and the PS3 Fat was already quite big)
That's why I'm not exactly ecstatic with Sony's priority.]

In any case, a more than excellent presentation for PS5, overall.
(with new IPs, and with excellent sequels)

And, considering that there should be a new event in August, I also expect other new announcements.

What's gonna be shown then? God of War? More Horizon? Crash? PS5 release date and price?
