PSP Custom Firmware Thread

I have the Photofast CR5400 as well, and I will say I ran into problems trying to go past 16GB. I have 1x 16GB micro SD, and like 3X 8GB microSD. I could use 2x 8gb, or 2x 4gb, or even 1x 8gb and 2x 4gb, but I couldn't ever get it to work with 1x 16gb and 1x 8gb card. It could be that you need 2x 16GB in order to get anything over 16gb but every combination I tried to get my 16gb to work with another card failed. And I actually ordered another photofast cr5400 thinking mine was broken and got the same results. So now I just 1x 16gb microsd in it, and its still plenty of room.

I know they say you can put in any two cards, as they combine into some form of JBOD array, but I would stick with the general RAID rule of thumb and only use identical pairs of cards for (probably) better performance and reliability.

Anecdotally, I have read of folks on message boards claiming to using 2x 16GB cards.

That is supported by the CR-5400 card and pretty well confirmed.

Not very cost effective though... still at least $50 or more for a 16GB microsd, compared to $15 - $20 for 8GB.

Can anyone recommend a guide that deals with upgrading a 1000 PSP that already has CFW to GEN-A?

Some of these sites I find with Google are suspect IMO.

Quick question: I bought Dissidia yesterday, and my CFW wasn't up to date and I accidentally ran the updater off the UMD instead of the memory stick. I realize I need to downgrade it and bring it back up using a Pandora battery at this point (I originally used the Liberty City Stories hack back in the day), but do I also have to use one of these magic memory stick things? Seems like this is getting expensive.

You can make one yourself. Just need to google it and put the files on your stick

Awesome, thanks. I didn't really want to shell out for another stick right now, but the fact that I can't continue playin the Policenauts translation is killing me.

Guys can a psp get bricked while playing? It started to black out while going to supend mode, and now when I turn on the psp it just stays black and the power led is always on.

I searched online and I found some people that say its bricked but, I didnt try a FW upgrade or something... so a psp can get "bricked" while playing?

I need Popsloader help. I've never used it, but I'm trying to install it. I used RSPSARDumper, extracted a few versions, followed the tutorial, everything (twice so far), but it won't work. It says the plugin is enabled, but it doesn't happen when I start a PSX game whether I'm holding the R button or not.

I think I may not be understanding the what's supposed to be in the txt file...

Note: If you already have other plugins installed (SEPLUGINS already exists), do not overwrite pops.txt. Instead, open the pops.txt included with the POPSLoader plugin archive with your favorite text editor (typically Notepad) and copy the line contained therein to your pops.txt file. Don't forget to save it before closing out.

what exactly do I need to paste in? I've definitely overwritten my SEPLUGINS folder a couple times over.

After falling in love with Dissidia's Video + Screenshot abilities, I searched the net for an app that could take pics of your PSP. I found this easy to install plugin that can take a pic at any time during play, you can even customize the button combo to your liking. FuSa Screenshoot

Project 7 Theme

Castlevania Screenie

Sorry if this is old/common knowledge, but I'm really happy I found this.

I'm sure it's possible, it sure sounds bricked.

I really don't know what that means. Some sort of categorization app? I use something that organizes my games by changing the modified date, but its nothing fancy.

Ok, I found a link detailing this app that Mejilan so gracefully left no description of. :lol

If you haven't used Bubbletune's Game Category plugin before and find yourself in the position where you have to scroll through over 50 homebrew applications in the Game > Memory Stick menu (oh, the pain), then this is for you. Bubbletune's Game Categories plugin is an effective alternative to using some of the computer-based organisation programs out there for the PSP
To start, simply create a sub-folder in PSP/GAME and drag and drop your homebrew files into it to create a category! What's better yet is that Game Categories doesn't affect your PSP themes, so you can keep themeing without any trouble.

Sounds useful, I think I'll check it out now.

Ha ha, Mejilan is finally going GEN? Guess I will too, then.

I guess Mejilan caved in after DA forums closed down so DA is pretty much done.
so GEN is the only thing left.

Game Categories Plugin by Bubbletune allows you to create separate memory stick icons for categories you determine/create.

For example, I have the following categories set up:
PSP
PSOne
Emu
HB (Homebrew)
Apps

I've got 16GBs worth of shit split up into those 5 categories!

When I click over to the Game section of the XMB, I see the usual Game Sharing and Saved Data Utility categories, but now I also see one memory stick icon for each of those apps. Think of it as categorized subfolders for the Game section of the XMB.

It's fucking awesome, and until today, did NOT work with 5.50 Gen-x!

Edit - The set up I describe is the plugin's Multiple MS mode, which is what I prefer.
By going to System Settings and Game Categories Mode, you can switch to a Context Menu, which is a bit more annoying, IMHO.

WOW, sounds like that's a wrap.

Probably switch to GEN this weekend...I want to play some Dissdia!!

Nah, as far as I can tell, DA hasn't thrown in the towel, just killed off his message board. Maybe he is giving up, but he's "left the scene" before, as you might recall.

The only real barrier for me was the lack of a working Game Categories plugin.
I've updated two other people's PSPs to 5.50 Gen-B in recent weeks, so I have no real aversion to it. I just NEEDED this plugin, and since the last update (before today's) was back in January or so, I was starting to lose hope that Bubbletune would revisit it.

So happy he did! :D

I haven't really been keeping up with the GEN firmware. I know it was missing some features when it was first released, but is there any reason to not update to it now?

No LEDA support or memory stick speed up hacks, but just about everything else is in.
PSN access is a go (for now).
~95% of all the major plugins and applications work.

I've dry tested a PSP game, a PSOne game (including the updated POPSLoader), an SNES game, and a bunch of plugins, and all are working for me as they were working before. No complaints.

And, of course, the new Game Categories plugin!! :D

Not really, MVS and CPS emulators don't work on it and that's enough reason for me not to upgrade.

I'm pretty sure I've seen folks in this very thread confirm that those emulators work for them with Gen-B.

There's conflicting reports, I tried many different versions myself and there were a few people in here who agreed with me. I'm too lazy to upgrade and try it all over again, but I may just sacrifice my pretty Project 7 theme in order to properly use Game Categories which is admittedly awesome.

Conflicting reports = naysayers wrong. I mean, if some have gotten it working, then that means that those that haven't are doing something wrong. To my mind. I don't care about those emulators enough to download them, find BIOSes, etc. I do wish you the best of luck, though!

Game Categories is AWESOME. The only thing missing is an easy way to sort the categories themselves (without using a PC) and the items collected in the folders. Just shy of perfection.

But at least Bubbletune (seemingly) fixed the issue whereby even the categories couldn't be properly sorted via a PC.

:/

I think I may just install 5.55 OFW on my old PSP 1000 for new games and keep my 2000 with 5.00 533-6 for everything else.

The biggest perk to Game Categories is that it cuts down on the load times of all the icons. As of right now though I only have about 15 separate things in the menu, so I'm not in dire need of it yet.

Why are people using popsloader? Or rather, isn't it built into the CFW? I just installed m33-4, and it plays PSX rips just fine. I got a pops.txt file in my seplugins folder so I'm betting I got pops, but I never went out of the way to install it nor have I ever had any issues using it.

Can you clarify the whole pops sitch Meji?

I just updated to 5.50 Gen-B about an hour ago and have no problems playing my PSOne games.

Risk - Spend a few minutes reading my POPSLoader tutorial, or at least the definitions and opening paragraphs, and you'll know what's what.

Edit - Ah hell, I'll just copy/paste the relevant bits.
An earlier tutorial of mine deals with the PSOne to PSP conversion process. This tutorial will increase your PSOne playback compatibility many, many times over again. You see, normally you'd be stuck with whatever version of the PSOne emulator is included in your current firmware. With this plugin properly configured and resident on your memory stick, you'll have access to just about all of them. Read on!

Definitions:
CFW - Custom firmware, not to be confused with OFW (Sony's official firmware). A more robust definition of custom firmware can be found elsewhere, but for the purposes of playing PSOne games on your PSP, know that you'll need CFW to play your own PSOne conversions. CFW can also play the official PSN releases of PSOne games, just like OFW can.
If you're unwilling to break free from the shackles of Sony's official firmwares, then you'll be limited to the paltry selection offered for download on the Playstation Network (PSN). The upside to this, however, is that the PSN conversions of PSOne classics will also work on your PS3. Your conversions will not.
See the tutorials elsewhere in this thread for details on flashing CFW on your PSP. The better tutorials (created by our very own navanman) are mirrored in my OP, for easy reference.

POPS - The Sony-developed PSOne emulator for the PSP. It's what we all use to play our PSOne games on Sony's handheld, whether we download official conversions from PSN or play our own conversions. By default, the version of POPS that you're currently using is equivalent to the version of your current firmware. For example, if you're running CFW 5.00 M33-3 or OFW 5.00, then your PSP has POPS 5.00.
NOT ALL VERIONS OF POPS WERE CREATED EQUAL. Most games do NOT work equally well across the board on all versions of POPS. So many small changes are made to POPS from version to version (which is customized to specifically work ONLY with the currently available official PSN conversions) that inevitably, you'll encounter performance issues with your non-official PSOne conversions. See the POPSLoader plugin entry for more information.

POPSLoader - An M33 CFW plugin (optional extension) created by Dark-Alex to overcome the firmware limitation of only being able to retain one version of POPS (the one built into your OFW or CFW) on your PSP. POPSLoader, when properly configured, allows you to set up just about every major revision of POPS side-by-side on your PSP. Basically, it allows you to select the version of POPS you'd like to run with the specific PSOne EBOOT you're trying to load.
Additionally, POPSLoader recalls your preference, per game, and auto-loads it when next you try to run the PSOne EBOOT. You may override this selection by holding the R shoulder trigger as you next load your PSOne EBOOT. This will take you back to the POPS version prompt and allow you to select another POPS version.
Fully setting up POPSLoader isn't difficult (just tedious), please continue reading below for more information.

so i decided to try out this gen stuff and after installing 5.50 gen-a i can't play psx games anymore!

do i need to update all my plugins? :(
Conflicting reports!

EDIT: Ah, I must have installed popsloader a long time ago and just forgot about it. I used to have a 2 gig card so I didn't really play psx rips much, when I got a bigger card last week I just copied the entire 2 gig card onto it. Pops must have been there all along.

So I have Soul Calibur on pre order. And that uses firmware 5.55

I currently have M33 4.01 on my PSP. So this means the game won't work right? ;x

What do I do?

You have to wait or upgrade to 5.55 OFW and then pandora back to CFW when you are done with SC
