PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Is Gen A and Gen B just as good as M33-6? I want to play Persona but don't want to downgrade to a potentially worse custom firmware.

Persona isn't going to work with the gen firmware. If Persona has the same checks as Tales of VS, you are going to need to wait until the gen team to release some kind of fix so that the game will work.

I don't want to leap without looking.

Thanks.

Don't worry, GEN-A & -B are far better & it's worth upgrading.

I want to make a 2 disc Eboot of a PSX game, as one file. What program would allow me to do that?

Use RS-Gui PopStationMD v3.00 (Google a link for the package, I'm a bit iffy about linking to the main website for it). It's a fairly rudimentary GUI for the main PopStation program but it's fairly self-explanatory - you can put several discs in one eboot very easily using this (just pick Disc 1, Disc 2 etc. from the drop down menus offered). It's got the best compatibility of any of the GUIs I've tried (it's the only one I could get my Chrono Cross discs to work with) even if it's fairly barebones.

Don't go with PSX2PSP in my opinion, although it's fine for most things it has a habit of stuffing up on some more temperamental titles.

why would you need a custom firmware to play a game?

@RocketDarkness: 5.50GEN-B was released only as an update from 5.50GEN-A.

Changelog:

  • Bug fix: the VSH menu can now be disabled
  • Pressing Select can start the recovery, bring up the VSH recovery menu, or do nothing at all (for those who wish to use Remote Play between their PSP and PS3)
  • Update via Network (taken from M33)
  • Evangelion Jo (as UMD and ISO) can be launched & played now
  • Pandora (converting the battery to/from the Pandora-state) and Shutdown Device options added to the VSH menu
  • Flash1 format option adds a check that prevents a flash1 format if enabled
  • Access [remains open] to the PlayStation Store and Remote Play continues working
Okay, and only firmware that updates a specific version (ie 5.50 A to 5.50 B) requires a specific version of CFW installed beforehand? So I can update from any other version to GEN-A? Specifically, 5.02 to 5.50?

And all I do is run it like any other application from the game menu?

A quick question:

My girlfriend has a PSP-1000 with the GEN-B firmware and she's looking to run an SNES emulator on it. How would I go about doing this?

I might be awfully rude to ask but jesus, this thread is huge and the OP is likely outdated.

Can anybody give me a rundown on:

1. What PSP I should buy? Jebus, there's billions of revisions/bundles.
2. What do I need to run a CFW to run my (legally bought) PSP games off the memory stick and to run emulators?

Thanks in advance.

I had GEN B last night and couldn't find an emu that worked with it, supposedly any emu that works on 3.xx kernel will work with GEN B but I had no such luck. I'd downgrade to GEN A or 5.00 M33 and get SNESTYL (I think thats what its called.)

----------------

Can someone tell me if a theme says it requires cfw 3.9 if it'll work on 5.00? Here's the theme in question.

1. A Phatty, or a Slim, you decide. If you go with a Slim make sure you read my last post here and find one with the certain motherboard. PSP 3000's can run CFW, but it's so bad and it's not fully developed yet. You could wait it out, but I'm not sure how long that will be.

2. If you go with a Slim, you'll need to use a Pandora battery and magic memory stick to be able to run CFW. Read my last post here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=17269237&postcount=5978

No, it won't work. Unless it's ported to the new FW, it will fuck some stuff up most of the time.

EBOOT in the GAME folder, .prx files in the PLUGINS folder and then you need to enable them from the recovery menu.

Thanks, I guess I shouldn't mess with the 20+ themes I just downloaded since they don't specify a firmware. Can you recommend a theme site that lists if they work in 5.00 m33-4? Does any 5.00 theme work in m33-4 or is it specific to that? Thanks again for the help.

Just Google search CTF or PTF themes, most should let you know what FW they're running on. I'm sure anything 5.00 - current is fine.

So, when I get home I'm going to run 5.50 GEN-A on my friend's PSP (which currently has 5.02 GEN-A) I SURE HOPE IT DOESN'T BRICK!!!!
103a6h1.jpg

Anything below 3.00 will brick, you should be fine if you do everything right.

Okay. Since it already has CFW, all I have to do is run the 5.50 installer and follow the instructions?

Yes sir. :D Then update to GEN-A THEN GEN-B. If you go directly to GEN-B you WILL have a brick.

Kccitystar, I don't know 100% to be honest, since it's a semi-new FW. I'm almost positively sure you will need to Pandora it though.

Awesome, thanks for the assistance, Paul.

A couple of general PSP questions, since this is the only major PSP thread in existence. I've been using one of those camera USB cables (plugs into the top of the PSP) and the USB Connect option in the menu to move these programs to the memory stick. Is this option something that came about due to firmware, or is it standard on all PSPs?

Also, in a similar vein, would I be able to simply move a save file off of the memory stick and on to another one? I want to use my friend's memory stick for the time being, and when I give it back to him, buy my own memory stick and move those files over to my own stick. Is this an option?

First off you're very welcome. :D
It's standard for all PSP's.

Yeah you'll be able to drag your save folder off the PSP to the computer, then when you plug in his PSP, you just copy the save to his. Then delete the save when you give it back. :D

I am now (assuming no freak accidents with the CFW update) ready to rock Dissidia tomorrow. I might pick it up before school tomorrow and play it on the train. :lol

Is there anyway to open a ctf file and mix and match themes? I really like this theme but I really like the boot sequence that this theme provides. It plays this red wave-like clip when you boot a game and it's much better than the other themes plain white screen. Is there anyway I can take the boot sequence from Divinorium's theme and add it to the Project 7 theme?

CTF Manager 1.0: http://www.sendspace.com/file/77fj9u

The only thing I can think of. It's used to build CTF themes, so I'm guessing you can edit them in that as well.

Ok guys, I need help here :)

I want to play policenauts on my PSP.

I have:

- PSP slim with original Firmware 5.55 (it's a flashable PSP, had it running CFW before)
- A pandora battery
- 2gig memstick

Can I downgrade to dark alex' firmware and then upgrade to GEN-A and then GEN-B?

You're out of luck for now until a method on downgrading becomes available..

How does m33 firmware handle a UMD based firmware update? I put 5.00 m33-6 on my cousins 1000.

If he tries to update to 5.55 via a UMD game what will happen?

edit: I'm mainly concerned with the retail version of Dissidia working for him.

There is a dump of 5.55, and now it's just waiting time until CFW of it is released.

RocketDarkness, enjoy it!

A dev on pspgen said 5.55 kernel is the same as 5.50. so we need another workaround.

just make a magic memory stick with your 2GB stick, and put Despertar del Cementerio v8 on there...

it would update. the 'DADADADA' error that blocks updates was removed

"SNES9xTYL 0.4.2mecm" is on my slim right now and continues to run fine on GEN-B 5.50.

Just about every question getting asked here can be answered here: http://pspslimhacks.com/psp-tutorials/ , here: http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/f133/ , or in this very thread.

So m33 is still only up to 5.00? I'm not so sure about this GEN-A GEN-B business. I want to get Warriors Orochi 2 this week but i'm pretty sure it's a 5.55 game. Is there a chance t'll work on 5.00?

I didn't want to switch from M33 either, but trust me, 5.50 GEN-B is better right now. It's built from M33 so it is almost exactly the same.. plugins, recovery menu, VSH menu, etc. The only thing really missing is the memory stick speed hack.

Don't listen to people saying it breaks all kinds of homebrew/emus. There's an updated working version for 99% of everything out there.

So wait, there's a 5.50 I should install before installing 5.50 GEN-A and GEN-B? Can I get a link? (Again, updating from 5.02)

Why would you need one?

Just the small handful of new games that are requiring 5.55, but the old version spoofing tricks aren't working anymore. There is no solution for this as of yet.

Like I've said before, don't expect any new firmwares/solutions for the next several weeks, until after the Go launches. Such is this life of the cat and mouse game.

Oh shit I didn't even know there was a 5.55.

No, you can go right to 5.50 GEN-A, then GEN-B.

guggnichso said:

Nobody is sure right now. It more or less will work, but it's always good to wait until something official is released from devs.

After I install 5.50 GEN-A, can I use Network Update to get the latest version or do I have to manually download and install GEN-B?
