I haven't had that many problems with the Sony ISO Loader, been flipping between that and the M33 one all evening and there's not a huge difference at all.

3.80 M33-5 here... with both loaders I get slowdowns and sound distortion in Tales of Eternia and only sound distortion in Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles (I haven't noticed slowdown so far with this title) =( ...

Fixed the problem, apparently I couldn't get ChillyWilly's latest version to correctly patch the key so I went for the previous one and now the update is running smoothly. Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the heads up. I had already decided to wait. But you're only adding to my decision. :)

I just picked up a PSP slim and am trying to figure this stuff out. Is there a n00bish guide or step by step on how to use a CFW if I picked up the datel tool?

Thanks guys

Is there a solution yet for using a 3.80 M33 fat psp to make a pandora battery? :( :( I want my CFW Slim and I don't care how complex the process has to be (just no hard modding my battery)

Why no hardmodding? It takes 5 minutes and is easy as hell.

If you're on official firmware above 3.50, then your only real shot is to make or otherwise acquire a pandora battery (or equivalent) and its matched memory stick.

If you have access to a friend's cracked PSP, then you can easily turn any fatty (and probably most slim) batteries into a Pandora and create its matched memory stick, using said cracked PSP.

If that's not an option, then you can try the hardware modification to a fatty battery which will essentially turn it into a service battery, then use one of the PC-only pandora installers to set up the matched memory stick.

If all else fails, then your cheapest option would be to purchase a Datel tool battery directly from them, and then using one of those PC-only pandora installers to set up the matched memory stick.

Once you have some kind of pandora with a memory stick matched to it, you can use it to crack any fatty or slim PSP and drop a load of awesome custom firmware on it.

How to load back again for poploader after warning screen?

Not sure what you're asking. If you want to return to the XMB, do the usual Home and return thing, if you want to choose a different POPS version if you have them, hold down the R trigger while booting the game and selecting the version you want to use.

Thanks, I mean different POPS version menu. The R trigger one

[edit] one question, will old POPs version work for multidisc eBoot?

No, only 3.71 POPS and greater.

heeeeey...so wow.

it looks like the psp homebrew sites jumped the 3.80 gun with release anticipation, forcing dark alex's hand (under pressure) to release the update -- which already has 5 patches -- and is apparently still flawed?

is that correct?

I just think he underestimated sony's changes to the memory stick reading.

There's no issues any more with 3.80 M33, the problems are in the official release too.

They just have a more direct interference with the games because the vast majority run off the memory stick.

So I'm seriously considering getting a PSP Slim soon (missing out on too many games ;_;), and I've been looking up all sorts of information on how to get custom firmware installed. I don't want to start a new thread because that seems foolish with this handy thread here. It's all very overwhelming to me! I'm sure I could eventually figure it all out on my own, but it's easier to ask. Is there some sort of "beginner's guide" or something that will help get me started?

I would be looking to emulate, well, everything I can, so I can play my games on the go. Plus I like to mess around with random homebrew stuff from time to time. I think that 1.50 kernel stuff doesn't work properly?

Anyway... like I said, I don't have the PSP yet but I plan to get it soon (probably after this big upcoming class project is over), so... any tips? Keep in mind I'm completely clueless.

Anyone have an idea as to why my PSP doesn't go into "suspend" mode anymore since I took the updates.

When I turn it of and then try to turn it back on the light will flick and then go off. The next time I turn it on I go back to the Sony boot/splash screen.

Big deal....no
Annoying...hell yeah :D

It's happening the same to me but only on homebrew.

If you know somebody with CFW PSP, you can use this guide here.
Otherwise keep an eye later this weeked for another guide for modding Slim PSP with Datel TOOL & TotalNewbieEasyInstaller.

Oh dude you're awesome. Thanks. One question, though, does "THIS GUIDE WILL NOT WORK ON 3.80 M33 FIRMWARE DUE TO CHANGES IN IPL IN 3.80 FIRMWARE" mean the CFW PSP can't have 3.80 M33 or I have to use this guide to install 3.71 M33?

I'll keep an eye for the new guide, but I have made my magic memory stick and all.

I'm just waiting for Datel Service Tool (convert PSP battery (Slim too) to Pandora and back)

for now i'll stick with old version since its buggy

How to downgrade, install CFW on ANY PSP using Datel TOOL and TotalNewbieEasyInstaller:

Intro:
As an alternative to my other tutorial on installing CFW using UPMS, this tutorial will show you how to flash your PSP with CFW using a previously purchased Datel TOOL battery and Windows based program called TotalNewbieEasyInstaller.
Disclaimer: I don't have Vista OS, but I have read that the important part of this guide(IPL writing) doesn't work on Vista.

What you'll need:
- Your PSP, either original or Slim PSP.
- Memory Stick Pro Duo ranging in size from 128MB (minimum) to 4GB (maximum)

What to do:
1. Download the TotalNewbieEasyInstaller from QJ.net website here.
2. Extract the contents of the zip package to your desktop.
3. Run the "START.EXE" application.
4. Connect PSP to your PC using USB cable. (Take note of the letter your PC assigns to the PSP MS).
5. Press ENTER to format your PSP. Depending on the size of MS being used, this can take up to 5 minutes to complete.
6. Press ENTER to set the drive label and then Y at the next prompt to format MS again.
7. With USB connection active, remove MS from PSP, then disable USB connection by pressing "O". Press ENTER to continue to next step.
8. Insert MS card into PSP and wait till orange access light stops flashing and then activate USB connection. Press ENTER to continue to next step.
9. A menu will appear with 4 installation options. Choose "4. Universal Unbricker: 3.71 M33 Installer.
10. When installation has finished, the IPL loader screen will appear. Press "Y" to install.
11. Then press ENTER and ENTER to close the program.

How to use:
1. Turn off PSP and remove AC power supply.
2. Insert Datel TOOL battery.
3. DC V3 should load up giving option to flash to 3.71 M33, flash Sony 3.71FW or backup NAND.
4. Backup NAND with square [ ] and it will write NAND to your MS, you will need 32MB (original PSP) or 64MB (Slim PSP) of free space for this. Your PSP will power off after this.
5. Remove and insert Datel TOOL battery again and this time choose X to install 3.71 M33 CFW.

Save nanddump.bin in root of MS to your PC when you are finished for safe keeping, incase you brick your PSP one day.

Updating 3.71 M33 firmware:
3.71 M33-4 is the last update for 3.71 M33 firmwares and is extremely stable and bug-free so for newcomers to PSP CFW I would recommend it over the newer 3.80 M33-5.
1. Download the M33-4 update from Dark_Alex website.
2. Extract the contents and you should have a folder called UPDATE.
3. Connect PSP to PC using USB and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME.
4. Browse to GAME / Memory Stick in XMB and run the M33-4 updater.

Installing 1.50FW (homebrew) addon:
WARNING: THIS IS FOR PHAT PSP ONLY, DO NOT RUN ON SLIM
1. Download the 1.5FW V2 addon from Dark_Alex website.
2. Extract the contents and you should see an UPDATE folder.
3. Connect PSP to PC using USB and copy the UPDATE folder to ms0:/PSP/GAME.
4. Copy the Sony 1.5FW called 150.PBP that we used to make UPMS to root of MS (ms0:)
5. Browse to GAME / Memory Stick in XMB and run the 1.50 V2 installer

I have 3.40 OE-A, what should I upgrade to? Is the latest version buggy?

And do I need the official 3.80 fw? Where can I get that?

If you need the official 3.80 installer, you can download it straight from Sony's site. I'd advise against that though.

I'd upgrade like this:

1) Upgrade up to 3.52 M33
2) Apply the 3.52 M33-4 patch
3) Upgrade up to 3.71 M33
4) Apply the 3.71 M33-4 patch
5) Apply the 1.50 v2 patch

*) Read the readmes included with each upgrade

I'd avoid 3.80 M33 for now.

The readme for 3.80 said I need the official one renamed to something else alongside the custom fw. Do I need to do this every time?

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
Just like you needed the official 3.40 installer when you upgraded to 3.40 OE, upgrading to 3.80 M33 requires the official 3.80 installer. This is par the course, since Dark Alex's installer pulls what it needs straight from Sony's installer. (Thus, he keeps his installers free of any illegal files or resources).

That said, you CANNOT upgrade from 3.40 OE to 3.71 M33 or 3.80 M33. You need to upgrade to 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4 first.

And again, I'd caution you against upgrading to 3.80 M33. It still has some flaws, whereas 3.71 M33 is perfectly serviceable.

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
It's really not difficult at all.

And the reason why 3.52 M33-3 (or 3.52 M33-4) is required before hitting the most recent CFWs is that all of the older SE/OE CFWs had an obscure bug in them that prevented updates to higher firmwares. 3.52 M33-3 and 3.52 M33-4 fix those bugs. Consider them the gateway to higher firmwares.

Cheers for the Datel TOOL tutorial navanman, I've promised I'll CFW my mate's PSP for his birthday present when I go and visit him, and you've just made it deliciously easy. I think I speak for everyone when I say that I really appreciate the support and community members found in these CFW threads.

No. 3.52 M33-4 is the highest you need to be.
Run Chilly Willy's Key Cleaner. You have a TA-082 board, right?

I dont' know if I have the TA-082 board, and what does the key cleaner do? I have launch day PSP if that matters.

Also, how can I rip my own PSP games to my mem stick? Is that possible?

Mejilan

Launch day (US) PSPs are not TA-082s. Shut down your PSP, reboot into the recovery console, and flip your homebrew kernel. Then try updating again.

More modern CFWs have the innate ability to rip ISOs from UMDs.

Ahh. Well, run the key cleaner anyway. It couldn't hurt. But what's stopping you from upgrading past 3.52 M33-4? What error?

To rip games there's a couple utilities out there. The easiest way is to hit select on the XMB, select the UMD drive and drag the ISO to the desktop. Then (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) compress it to a CSO using any CSO compressor you find on Google.
Then put the ISO in X:\ISO\
(Also, try to switch to the official Sony ISO loader)

You don't have to. But 3.71 M33 and 3.80 M33 by default remove 1.50 kernel access, unlike earlier CFWs.

Since you have a fatty PSP, you can restore it by running the corresponding 1.50 patch. Slims do not have this option. Restoring the 1.50 kernel will grant you higher homebrew compatibility. There aren't many apps out there that haven't been ported to the 3.xx kernel, but some remain. Those apps typically won't run on a slim, or a fatty running a modern CFW without the 1.50 patch.

Mejilan

Congrats. It wasn't too bad, right?

And keeping it up to date from now will be a lot easier. You'll have to do one more major update when you finally upgrade to 3.80 M33, but like the 3.71 M33 update, it also uses SCE's regular updater program, so it's pretty simple.

And one of the upgrades that 3.80 M33 comes with is a coopted Network Update option. Basically, you'll be able to install the incremental M33-x patches via the PSP's Network Update. It'll connect to DA's servers instead of Sony's.

Brilliant, and working perfectly already. But I'm personally staying away from 3.80 M33 until it catches up to 3.71 M33 in stability, speed, and compatibility.
