PSP Custom Firmware Thread

This release is a definite improvement on previous ones. I was playing Lumines from the Memory Stick at work last week and there was a ton of slowdown and a sort of crackling in the sound. Both issues are gone now.

Might be worth having a look if you're on 3.71 M33 and have the means to go back easily if your issues are still there.

Sorry if this is a beaten to death question, but can I update from 3.71 M33-4 straight to 3.80 M33-5? It'll be my first update since I managed to upgrade my Slim to CFW by making a Pandora battery using my slim's battery.

1.50FW addon enables use of homebrew written using 1.50 code. With Sony FWs greater than 3.60, these are written using 3.XX kernel, so Dark_Alex added bits of 1.50FW kernel back in so you can run old homebrew.

Installation:
Download the 1.50FW addon for 3.80 and place in PSP/GAME380.
Download the Sony 1.50FW, rename 150.PBP and place in root of your Memory Stick.

That's only good for Fat PSPs right? Or can I do this with my slim also?

I am, it always tells me I have the latest version whenever I try to get the latest patch.

Boot into Recovery Menu and go to Configuration and see if you have Network Update enabled.

So should I stay on 3.71 if I depend on eLoader to run 1.5 homebrew stuffs on my Slim? I don't think they have a solution for this yet for 3.80 do they?

You need to update to 3.80 M33 first, then apply M33-5 (which includes all the previous updates)

Correct, this is for fat PSP only.

I thought SNES9X 0.4.2 TYL ran fine?

The standard version works fine on 3.80 slims, the "ME" version requires a phat though.

NesterJ NES emulator works great, bionic commando is still awesome.

I've been away from the scene for a while. I'm currently at 3.52 m33 cfw.

All I need to do is download the latest version and replace the EBOOT correct?

Network update really made this easy - we would have had to dick around with inserting/ejecting memory sticks and finding update files before this magic.

I agree, it's way quicker to update over wifi than to fiddle around hooking up the PSP via USB. Got 3.80 M33-5 on mine now. Now if only there would be a 3.80 compatible version of PSPRadio that supported static IPs...

If you aren't on 3.52 M33-3 or M33-4, upgrade to that, then download the 3.80 update and Sony 3.80FW and rename it to 380.PBP

If you have Slim PSP, there is a 3.XX kernel version around aswell.

It never ran "fine"; there is major slowdown in many games. Only reasonable ones were really Super Mario World and Zelda. Even these had problems too...

I really wish someone would

a) make a proper PC Engine emulator

b) make a proper SFC emulator

There's really no excuse when they were able to get PSX games running fine (OK that was Sony), not to mention MAME runs almost flawlessly, from what I understand....

QJ fucked that up. That's not a new emulator, but one of the old 2005 ones repackaged with new icons. :lol

That package's creator confirmed the QJ fuck up (and laughed about it) in another forum.

I seem to remember playing PC Engine games on my PSP just fine in the last year... were there issues? I don't remember.

Definitely agree on the SNES. You'd think it would have been one of the first things that someone tried to do, but we've only really had one project and it's been a big disappointment that hasn't been updated in a while. Meanwhile we have a Genesis emulator that runs both Genesis and Sega CD games at 60fps...

For me the biggest homebrew emulation achievement has to be NJ's CPS-1/CPS-2/MVS emulators, though. I just can't work out what devilry he's performed to get Marvel vs Capcom, SFA3, etc running flawlessly at 60fps. Remarkable stuff. I hope he's at least investigated making a CPS-3 version to see if it's possible.

Why are people saying 3.80 M33 is slower? I'm not noticing anything oO
The first couple of versions were very slow at running ISOs from the Memory Stick (they worked, just slowly and with audio issues) and had a few other bugs and incompatibilities as well. The problems that I had have all been ironed out now, though.

I far prefer to play GBA ports of SNES game, the GBA screen size formats really well to the PSP and the GBA emu is rockin.

Are CPS1 and 2 working just fine on 3.80 CFW? What about the rest of the emulator scene? If so, I might switch now that it seems to be doing just fine.

Also, there is a fully functional Sega CD emulator?? WTF?

The sega CD emulator runs smoothly for sonic CD if that helps, though you need to track the bios down to get it working.

Yeah I'm glad I switched to PicoDrive when I found out the D-Gen 3.xx version lacked zip support.. It's just that much better
That sham of an emu DGEN PSP could never run Revenge of Shinobi at full speed for me.

So basically I love PicoDrive.

I've put my ear to the floor and apparently Snatcher runs great. So do a lot of other Sega CD games. They obviously have larger file sizes though. Apparently zipping them isn't recommended either.

Pico drive is amazing!

True I have only run Snatcher on it. But the fact that I can play Snatcher on my PSP makes George a happy happy panda!

How well do other SCD games run on it? I'm thinking that when I get my new Memory stick Lunar 1 and 2 are gonna be shoo-ins.

Also quick Q on 3.80 M33, does remote play work on it? I was trying with 3.71 and it said I needed to upgrade in order do it.

I can't get Snes9x to run on my PSP Phat. I'm using 3.71 M33-4 and it doesn't boot up. All other homebrew works fine except for it. :(

Remote play on 3.80M33 works, I've tried it for the first time and it's pretty useless since I can't play any of the PSN games on my PSP

Is there a way to subscribe to podcasts in a similar way I can do with my iPod with ma PSP?

My first guess would be to subscribe to an rss feed and stream it? Is there a way to actually download and play from the flash card?

edit: the rss feature works great for what I need.

I just got my slim psp and... I can't make a Pandora battery with my modded fat because the program you need to do so doesn't run on 3.80 M33? NOOOOOOOOOOOO

I ripped my two copies of the Lunar games, Snatcher, Urusei Yatsura, Keio Flying Squadron, Shining Force CD and Sonic CD and they are all flawless. Enjoy your classics!

Also, Outrun 2006's title screen still comes in a tad too slow, and this is on 333MHz mode. My Silver PSP Phat (which I still have on 3.71 M33-4) has it smooth as silk, so something is still amiss.

Just updated to M33-5...

I'm still having slowdown problems while playing games from the MS... =( ...

Really? I did a quick test with the one game i was playing during these last few updates and it had this weird slow down during music changes, but now its running like it was in 3.71 m33-4.

I"ll have to check a few other games too.

The only slowdown I noticed was during heavy MS usage, so like when a game is loading. But during gameplay it's fine. I can imagine if you play off the MS why it would be annoying.

Ok, time for a question or two again, gah, getting back into things can oft be painful. As I have just upgraded to 3.71 M33-4 today after a good year or so of being out of the whole scene. I know some people are saying that it isn't time yet to upgrade to 3.80, but what reasons are there to not upgrade, what are the positives and negatives to moving up to the next firmware?
