PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Hi guys,

I've read all the tutorials in Mejilan's first post, but am just wondering about the practical use of CFWs, specifically, once I have carried out the various steps required to downgrade and install one (using a TOOL battery) will I then be able to run it using my regular battery?

Yup, as soon as the CFW is installed, you can pop your original battery back in. When performing future upgrades (Such as 5.50 Gen A ---> 5.50 Gen D) you can keep your original battery in.

4 firmwares behind now, with 5.51, 6.00, 6.10 and now 6.20. 6.20 will also now mark the first time a custom firmware user can't even purchase a certain set of content from PSN with no Comic Book section in the firmware, recent Phantasy Star Portable 2 UMD Demo does not work on current firmware and all attempts to decrypt it have failed, PSN access for CFW users will probably never return.

Looks like we'll have to wait until the week of December 3rd, when Phantasy Star Portable 2 comes out and all importers cannot play the game in any way on their system and maybe GEN will finally try to crack 6.00+ firmware.

Until then, pretty bleak for CFW users. Sucks :(

Whatevs, I can play all my PS1 games on it, so STFU or get out.

I think I'm going OFW for now. The major reasons I wanted CFW was for the 333Mhz and downloading games to the hard drive. Sony has fixed those issues so I've got no big reasons to stay on CFW and deal with these headaches. It was real fun playing Full Throttle and Ultima 7: Serpent Isle on my PSP but I've had my fill of that for now I guess.

Thanks for the fast reply, now I just have to wait for my TOOL battery to arrive!

As expected, the demonstrated but unreleased PSP Go HEN exploit has been patched in FW 6.20.

=(, my go really wants to be released from it's bondage of terrible sony support. It's truely a sad state of affairs when I want to give money to sony and they refuse to take it. I don't even care about not getting the cheaper prices that UMD's give, I just want to be able to play every game I would like to buy on a device I paid a premium for.

After 6.20FW was confirmed as fixing the unreleased homebrew exploit for PSP Go, the team behind it decided to release it.
It appears to be a game save exploit based on a really old PSP game called Archer Maclean's Mercury.

Yes, check out the newest version of Homebrew Sorter by Sakya.
It even supports Bubbletune's Game Categories plugin!

So is it possible for me to purchase LBP PSP UMD and rip it but still play online on GEND2? I kind of want a physical copy but desire the speeds of a DD version.

I haven't been up-to-date on CFW since M33 (JPN Dissidia) =(

Cool thanks!

Figured out how to install, thanks!

Wow, Homebrew Sorter is fantastic. Such a simple thing but makes things so much more pleasant.

You should be able to play LBP with GEND2, but you won't be able to go online at all.

I believe at least OFW 6.0 had been fully decrypted a while back, so I wouldn't lose all hope that we'll see a significant new release that gives us PSN back. My theory was always that they would want to wait for the dust to settle from the GO release and the expected mini-flurry of firmware updates. We're just about at that settled down stage, probably.

So it seems that Sony is finally gaining terrain on hackers (or even winning).

The only reason I changed from OFW to CFW is because I have games from multiple PSN Accounts, and having to activate my PSP in all those accounts every time I want to play different games (like HMH or GTA) is a pain in the arse.

So I changed to CFW, but now I can't play any of my DD games. If Sony fixed that, for example on the PS3 you can have multiple accounts, I'd have no reason to stay in CFW specially since the latest wave of games.

Seeing both CFW and OFW problems, I must say that both SUCK.

If 6.0 had been decrypted it would definitely have been released by now. Only hardware launch firmware is treated as a something to wait until, but as I said above we're 4 firmwares behind now, and I see the Phantasy Star Portable 2 release in december as the make it or break it moment for Team GEN.

Which is a pain as the list of japanese demo content I'm missing out on grows even longer with the God Eater demo, and I'm even holding off on getting LBP PSP as I'd want the online functionality. So yeah, I'd say Sony are definitely "winning" these days.

Is there any reason I should go to GEN?

Some recent games might give you issues trying to play from M33... If you don't have any issues I don't think there is any strong reason to.

I own a PSP Go, trust me, the launch didn't stir up any dust. Whatever the hold up is in the CFW scene, it's not because of the Go.

Shit like this is why Dark AleX has left the PSP scene:

Looks like not all is well in the kingdom of PSP homebrew. And it involves no less than two of the loudest voices currently in the scene: mathieulh and Freeplay. Over at our forums, mathieulh calls out Freeplay for supposedly leaking the Mercury exploit, when the code of said exploit wasn't his to begin with.

Freeplay has been warned not to leak the Mercury exploit because the code simply isn't his, he abused fanjita's trust when fanjita gave freeplay an access to his svn server and freeplay tried every possible url variations until he found something. That something was the prometheus svn which had various exploits including the mercury one, all coded and ready for use. Basically Freeplay stole the exploit...

As a proof that I am not lying to you, or making this up, I will be now providing along this post the original mercury exploit and sources as they were in the original svn (after removing .svn folders for obvious reasons). Trust me, it saddens me to have to resort in doing so, unfortunately I do have no choice considering Freeplay leaked the game exploit to begin with...

all this stuff about people seeking internet fame and everything else in the "scene" is just so ridiculous.

The only person who any one knows are those at the top (Dark Alex). And I'm sure this goes for any other areas of homebrewing (i.e. Wankiko in Wii homebrew and that c4eva guy that is constantly quoted over there in the MS banning thread).

The whole petty nature of all this is beyond me

I have a question about LBP PSP and figured this would be the place to ask since it pertains to Firmware:

I know that you're locked out from downloading levels on CFW, but would it be possible for someone to just provide the "save data" that comes from downloading and upload the levels somewhere so that CFW would be able to play downloaded levels? I'm assuming that downloaded levels just make a data folder in your memory stick, couldn't you just copy and upload those for another person instead of going online?

... Or is it like the PS3 version where you don't actually download any levels, you sort've play them "streaming" from the internet and don't actually put them on your HDD?

Mejilan

Running off of Custom Firmware
My copy of LBP came with 6 bonus skins redeemed via a voucher code, downloaded via the PS3, and transferred over via USB. Those skins, at least, come in the form of data that gets added to the PSP, but I imagine that there's DRM in the data, so swapping the data files will probably not work.

I'm just assuming here, though. I've yet to actually play the game. Arrived the same day as NSMB Wii, AC2, AC2 DS, and AC Bloodlines! LBP can't compare to that!

That'd be the smart (for Sony) way to shut out cfw users. But not very user friendly, as you'd always have to be within reach of a wi-fi hotspot.

I don't know if the files can simply be passed around, but I do know from a review I read that levels can in fact be saved to the PSP for offline play. I had always wished the PS3 version was like this, so that there could be a user level underground of sorts, where we could all play levels with penises, vaginas, and other assorted immaturity.

Why do all the PS1 games I convert have Dracula as their save file icon? I thought Icon0 was supposed to be used as the save file icon?

Ummm.... :lol
In 3.80 pops, Sony has introduced a bug that causes a crash when the icon of the pbp is not 80×80,
like those of psstore. To resolve the issue, M33 was replacing the icon in ram by the one with Dracuala image,
what caused the side effect of ps1 save games having Dracula icon.

Now the behaviour in 3.80 M33-2 is to replace the icon in ram only if the one in the file is not 80×80.

Using older CFW?

What? Am I doing something wrong? I know Icon0 is used in the XBM as the game icon, but I thought that same icon was used as the save file icon? Is something else used?

I'm on 5.50 Gen D2 and I'm using the latest version of Pops. Unless it's been updated and I haven't heard about it.

Question about memory sticks...

Is a micro sd -> duo pro adapter identical in performance to a sandisk duo pro? Especially with the sizes over 4gb? Lemme know what you guys use and how smooth it performs.

I had an 8GB memory stick and just copied stuff over to a new 16GB one, and now the PS1 games don't start and their folder view seems to be messed up, and I can't find my old memory stick either. I bought this memory stick so I can have most of my favourite PS1 RPGs on the same stick too :-( Does anyone know what I should do? I guess it's my fuck up or something, but it's really annoying. Using M33-6.

I use the Photofast adapter + 2x 16GB Sandisk class 2 microSDHCs and though the initial XMB load is noticeably longer and laggier (as is returning to the XMB from a game or after a USb session), in-game performance has not been affected in the least. In other words, it's cheap, significant storage will no gameplay impact (tested heavily with homebrew, PSP ISOs and PSOne eboots). Well worth the laggier XMB, IMHO.

Can anybody waste the time to explain what the Memory Stick acceleration does? I just recently got a PSP, so I went straight to Gen firmwares. I could just google it, I guess, but it's easier to ask here.. :D

Do they improve loading from the Memory Stick? If so, how is that even possible?

Edit: Can't wait for my 16gig MS to arrive, so I can ditch using compressed images. I believe that's the issue with the slow/stuttering loading on some games...

Are you talking about Dark-Alex's memory stick speedup hacks?
He had two versions, IIRC.

Originally, it was determined that the new Sony drivers introduced in the 5.0x official firmwares were slower/clunkier than the earlier memory stick drivers. DAX figured out how to incorporate the 3.71 memory stick drivers into his 5.0x based CFWs, and that was one solution (fatmsmod patch). It was kind of a pain to install.

Eventually, he wrote some alternate speed up hacks into his later CFWs which worked even better, and were easier to enable/disable.

Currently, neither version is officially supported by Team Gen CFWs, though someone HAS taken DAX's older fatmsmod patch and managed to make it work on at least 5.50 Gen-B, when last I checked.

The word around the Gen forums was that they were working on incorporating memory stick speedup hacks (presumably based off DAX's work) into their next batch of CFWs. We shall see!

Edit - CSOs work fine for older games which were poorly optimized to run off UMD. As PSP game development matured, improved UMD streaming techniques were developed. Games that are programmed to more dynamically stream from the UMD handle CSO compression very poorly. This goes for games like God of War, and many higher tier games from that point on.

I have a friend's PSP that I'm going to update to 5.50 GenD2. His Phat PSP currently has 2.50 OFW on it. I have a Pandora and MMS with 5.00 M33-6 on it...from there what's the order of CFW I want to go in order to 5.50 Gen D2?

5.00 M33-6 to 5.50 GEN-D
5.50 GEN-D to GEN-D2

You could also download 5.50 GEN-D, copy the XGEN folder along with 550.PBP to your MMS and make a GEN-D Pandora from your 5.00 M33-6 version.
You run the XGEN program on your CFW PSP to convert it to newer version.

Nice, hopefully its based on one of the 6.xx firmwares.

Also hope we can finally get FF8 to work properly without having to bounce between firmwares.
