PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Sweet, just went from 5.5 Prome-4 to CFW 6.60 PRO-C10 without a hitch. Finding the proper steps was the hard part but I was dumb and didn't consult GAF first. I think I learned my lesson lol.

I was rather annoyed with being unable to play PSN Classics on my PSP and I figured it was time for an update.

Its easy, like everyone has said, no reason not to try it :D

Oh wow, seems like the PSP scene has changed a lot since the last time I was playing with it.

Seems like its time to finally get a 32GB SDHC and load it up with goodies, are there any guides on how to rip my UMD games, I have Wipeout Pure/Pulse, lumines and Tony Hawk Underground 2 that I would love to have as ISOs on a memory card.

Also how can I upgrade my PSP from 5.50 Gen 3 to the latest one, I have a PSP -1000, launch console.

Method 1: While CFW is running, press "select" on your PSP's main menu to access a CFW menu, and change the "USB device" from Memory Stick to UMD Slot. Now when you connect your PSP to PC via USB, instead of showing the contents of your Memory Stick, it will show the contents of your UMD Slot in ISO form. Copy>Paste to PC. Change the ISO's filename from something generic to the game's name. Use the CFW menu again to change back to Memory Stick, and drop the ISO into a folder on your PSP named "ISO".

Method 2: Put the latest version of ISO Tool into your PSP (in the folder PSP>Game). Run ISO Tool and follow the simple onscreen instructions to dump UMDs directly to your Memory Stick. This method is slightly faster. It'll name your PSP ISO's using their Sony-given ID numbers by default, which aren't very user-friendly, but you can always change the filenames later, and they're very specific, so you can use them to go online and more easily compare them to other people's dumps to confirm that your backups are digitally-perfect.

By the way, don't use CSO, or "compressed ISO", because that's "lossy" compression designed to make games smaller by eliminating "unneeded" data, and tinkering with game programming like that can introduce glitches and bugs. If you get 32GB, you'll have PLENTY of space and won't need compressed game images.

i think my PSP is running 6.20 Pro B10...haven't turned it on for a while. Is it worth it to upgrade to the latest 6.60? on 6.20 b10 I had to set up the latest version of popsloader at the time because Xenogears had really bad slowdown issues in battle. I guess I would have to switch to a different popsloader for 6.60 as well?

edit - just looked it up, i guess the version of popsloader i have would work for 6.60 too. so I guess all i'd have to do is do the upgrade to 6.60...not sure if i really want to do it though

Any guides to "ripping" PSN games? I want my downloaded games to be profile-independent so I don't have to keep switching between US and EU accounts.

This would be handy as I've recently found that I cannot transfer legit games bought via Media Go to my PSP as I can't get the firmware to update to 6.60, even faking the verison.txt number doesn't seem to work.

Here's how to do it:
1- Download or buy the games you want on PSN (skip if already downloaded)
2- Install them on your PSP (skip if already installed on PSP)
3- Download NPDecryptor
4*- Connect your PSP to your computer by USB
5- Go into a game's directory on your computer (example: PSP/GAME/UCUS12345),
6- Rename the EBOOT.PBP to NP.PBP
7- Extract the files from the NP_Decryptor archive into your game's directory (ex: PSP/GAME/UCUS12345).
8- Disconnect your PSP from your computer
9- Run NPDecryptor on the PSP

Repeat from step 4 for each game you want to decrypt.

Remember that your PSP has to be activated with the same account as the game you want to decrypt, or else it won't work.

Thanks for this! I think I got the wrong end of the stick though.
Is there a way to legitimately download a title via Media Go and then 'strip away' the DRM so that I can just copy the eboot over to my psp?

You can download it legitimately from your PSN account via Media Go but you can only remove the account dependency via the method outlined above on your PSP. Once that's down you can take the result and store it on your computer near your official stuff so you won't need to do it over and over.

Balls, looks like the only way I'll get my games onto the PSP is to buy a pandora battery then, even then I'm not sure it will have any success!

And people wonder why PSP still outsells the vita?

Easy piracy and free games, apparently. :-(
This has been the PSP's chief problem for years - more than 70 million units sold and a seven year lifespan with one of the worst attach-rates for a handheld ever, and sales of Triple A titles like Ghost of Sparta and Peace Walker below six figures in NA while torrent sites list the ISOs as having been downloaded literally millions of times... The apologists will claim that's merely coincidence and that ultimately easy, accessible, popular piracy had nothing to do with the PSP's relatively low software sales, but thier arguments ring hollow with me over all.

Full disclosure: I run CFW on various of my PSPs myself, and tho' I am meticulous about not pirating currently available commercial software, I suspect I am in a distinct minority. Ne'ertheless, having a strong vocal contigent of this enthusiast minority on GAF doesn't change the PSP's fortunes. It's too bad we'll never know what it might have been if everyone had to buy the games they wanted to play on it.

What firmware are you running? What error do you get?

Bit of a bizarre question here but here goes....

I have a PSP-1000 and for some reason it seems to be stuck on 6.35. By that I mean I am able to download 6.60 but it will not install it. Every time I try to install it I get an error stating that the memory card could not be read, in the end I gave up and put 6.35 PRO temp on it and have been happy. However I went to transfer some PSN purchases across via Media Go and it now states that I require 6.60 to install the item. The memory card appears to be fine in that I can read/write all other things to it.

Is there any way I can force 6.60 onto the device whilst in the temp PRO firmware? Or would permanently flashing 6.35 PRO allow me to use some form of firmware downgrader/upgrader? Sorry if it's an inane question!

Like I said, the memory card works fine, I'm able to run games, saves, anything from it, etc. However I download the 6.60 update and as soon as I accept the user agreement it informs me that the memory card could not be read. (080010005) I think is the error code.

I've done the usual steps such as formatting (from both a pc and on the device) etc but cannot find anything that works.

I'm planning on getting another PSP, but I don't know if I should go for a PSP-3000 or a PSP-GO.
Since you already had the PSP (I assume 1000?) go for the Go IMO. But it's really worth it to also have the 3000. So if you can afford it get both since they are both limited by now

Is the screen on the 3000 way better than the 2000? Or just slightly better? I have a 2000, but I might sell it and get a 3000 and that will be my systems of forever with my GO.

It's similar to the Go, only a bit bigger and with a slightly more pronounced flickery scanline effect.

It's unfortunately not a clear-cut upgrade. The colors look sharper and there's virtually no ghosting compared to the 2000, but it has that definitely noticeable scanline effect going on.

It's worth it for me is all I know.

I love my Go. I think my PSP-1000 is a turd-like brick and only use it to rip UMDs, but I carry my Go everywhere. It really addressed every concern I had with the larger unit.

I feel dumb for asking this, but I forgot which post had the information to let me be able to take screenshots in-game for any game, or something similar. Can someone please point me in the right direction?

It was linked in the last few pages. Link it if you find it, I'm interested too :)

I remember Stump posting about prxshot to take screenshots. I still use this.
There are a bunch of different plugins that can do screenshots. The one I'm using right now is called prxshot.prx

You can download it here:
http://github.com/downloads/codestation/prxshot/prxshot-0.4.0.zip

To install:
1) Unzip, hook up PSP to USB
2) Copy the prxshot folder to Memory Stick:/seplugins/ -- if there is no seplugins folder, create it.
3) Inside seplugins folder, create game.txt, pops.txt, vsh.txt if any of the three don't exist. game.txt tells the PSP which plugins to use inside PSP games. pops.txt tells the PSP which plugins to use inside PS1 games. vsh.txt tells the PSP which plugins to use in the OS.

If you are putting the plugin on the PSP's internal storage (IE with a PSP go), write the following in all three files:
ef0:/seplugins/prxshot/prxshot.prx 1

If you are putting the plugin on the PSP's memory stick, write the following in all three files:
ms0:/seplugins/prxshot/prxshot.prx 1
Just that one line. Nothing before, nothing after.

4) Save the files. Reboot PSP. Remember to use the Pro Restore again.

To take a screenshot:
1) Press the music note button. Screenshots will shot up in PSP photos or in Memory Stick:/PSP/SCREENSHOT

To verify which plugins are running:
1) Make sure you're using CFW
2) Press select in the XMB
3) Select Recovery Menu
4) Select Plugins
5) Select either System Storage if you're using a PSP that has internal storage or Memory Stick if you're using a PSP that doesn't. You'll see the plugins there.

Is there any plugin that lets you change the icon0.png for specific games/homebrew without modifying the original file?

No. But changing it manually isn't very hard, with either something like pbpunpacker or UMDGen depending on what you're modifying.

Newb coming in. Suprised how easy it all was with fthe guide on wololo's site, just installed the temporary version and the plugin a couple of posts above me to take screenshots. Everything works fine, just one newby question. What the hell is Pro Restore in step 4? :p

When you install PRO CFW as a temporary measure, it won't survive a full power off. Because i assume that's what you've done when you install the plugin, you need to run the Fast Recovery again to establish it (Pro Restore is more or less a typo....it literally means restore your PRO firmware again after the power off). You can check what firmware is active in the settings menu.

If you have a permanent CFW either via the 6.20 fiddle or the cIPL then it's irrelevant, but i'm guessing you don't.

Okay, I bit the bullet and CFW'd my PSP.

I was scared my Growlanser UMD wouldn't run, but it does...

except sometimes I get the dreaded 'this game can not be played' error.

Any idea why? It isn't all the time, a restart seemed to let it run.

Also, Unchained Blades and Hakuoki aren't running anymore. :(
(I own both from the PSN.)

Figured I'd ask here since maybe some of you have encountered this, but when I have a UMD in PSP and I'm playing a game, sometimes the "Do you want to quit? screen flashes on randomly. Sometimes it behaves, other times, you'd cancel the screen only for it to pop back in your face seconds after! Any idea what could be causing this and are there any fixes?

How's the PSX emulation these days? I'm experiencing some graphical glitches while playing PSX games like THPS2 (currently) or Soul Reaver (before). It's nothing big (like textures being bent a bit to one side), but it's annoying. Any way to fix that? Unless it's just a PSX thing (played them before on PC only), but I doubt it. ;-)
I bought the PSP used, it had already perma 6.20 PRO-B4 installed, I'm not very keen on CFW etc. Dunno if all those POPSloader things are still relevant since Fatty's guide doesn't say about it.

Try extracting the UMD's you own to ISO's if your memory card is big enough for all the games.

Is the PSP Go 100% as mod-able / updatable as the PSP-1000? I have 3 1000's and I'm thinking of getting a Go cheap since it's stupidly smaller and more pocketable and has no moving parts.

I thought I read something about how the PSP-1000 was the only one that is hardware accelerated with certain CFW/emulators/etc. while the other models are only something like soft mod-able.

That was before as far as I know, now it's fully hackable and 100% an improvement over previous models except for the UMD drive. If you're used to the horrendous screen on the 1000, the Go will be a revelation.

I seem to have a severe problem with my PSP 1000. A while ago it wasn't turning on (the power light came on for about 2 seconds then shut off again) and I realised the problem had something to do with the UMD drive as I hit it with a slight amount of force and the PSP turned on properly. The first problem kept coming back and I kept solving it by hitting the back of the UMD drive. It appears that after doing this over and over, the PSP doesn't like me anymore as now it turns on but only stays on for 10-30 seconds before freezing and turning off. Can anyone at all help me with this? I assume I must have broken something.

I have a PSP1000 running 6.60 pro B10 cfw.

I have read that if I make an "ISO" folder at the root of the memory stick, that it should be able to play ISO files as part of that firmware.

I've tried several times and nothing ever shows up on the PSP.

Anyone ever get this to work? Seems like a lot of people online seem to have no problem, and they say it's as simple as putting the files in that folder.

That's all it should take. Your PSP directory should look something like H:\isos\

Put your games in the \isos\ folder (they have to be in either ISO or CISO formats) then disconnect USB and go to your games menu on the PSP.

(edit) Ledsen: That's a bit misleading. All PSP1000 and older PSP2000 can have full custom firmware installed permanently. Later model PSP2000 and beyond can only have "temporary" custom firmware. It can't be flashed permanently, but it lasts until the system is completely powered down (not just put in sleep mode, like holding the power button for 5 seconds or removing the battery) Besides that though, that's correct.

Wow, I'm completely stumped then. I have an "ISO" folder at the top of the directory, next to the MPROOT, MUSIC, PICTURE, PSP and VIDEO folders. Inside that folder I have two ISO files but nothing shows up in the game menu. I checked system info and it shows running 6.60 pro B10.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

And you're in CFW mode, right? When you press the select button, the CFW menu should come up.
