PSP Custom Firmware Thread

Uh... yes? That's the entire point of POPSloader.
The point of POPSLoader is to allow you to choose which version of POPS (the Playstation emulator for PSP) you want to load to allow for differing compatibility with PSX games.

You don't have to muck around with POPSLoader at all if you just want to emulate PSX games or rip them. The emulator is built in to the firmware.

Keep us (me?) posted if you decide to do the deed - I'm in the same boat as you as I've been holding back due to fatmsmod issues but if this is true (along with pops) then I don't have a reason NOT to update!

I confirmed in my post on the last page that the fatmsmod patch works fine, you've just got to make sure you use an unencrypted fatmsmod.prx. If you use a sigchecked or encrypted fatmsmod.prx you'll get a brick squire. I'm running the patched version on my PSP right now in front of me, and I've had no issues. Good luck!

does anyone happen to have a link to info about what video formats the latest m33 supports? I have been wanting to do some convertin' lately, but I dont want to end up spending hours and hours converting a bunch of my kids in the hall dvds and have them not work.

DUMB QUESTION TIME !!

Anyone had a problem with a memory stick becoming stuck in their PSP? Mine technically ejects, but won't move more than a little outside of the memory stick slot, as though it's getting caught on something. I'm trying to get it out, but I'm really trying to be careful not to break anything and damage my PSP or the memory stick.

Yeah, I didn't want to make a thread, and this is the closest thing to a "general PSP troubleshooting" thread that's currently active here.

I've had that happen too. I just pushed it back in and tried to click it back out again. After a few tries it popped out.

Quick question, I am running CFW 3.71 M33-4 on a PSP Phat and have two purchased PSOne games from the PS Store, so how can I get them to run on my PSP? Currently I get "the game can not be started - (CA000005)"?

Thanks in advance.

ok I've been ignoring the psp custom firmware scene for too long now, it's getting too apparant that I am missing out on a lot of cool stuff.

I have a psp phat updated to the latest official 4.01 firmware. Is there still a remote chance for me to put custom firmware on it?

Arghhhh, please have a read of the very consise OP.

So I'm not having luck with a pandora battery and the TotalNewbieEasyInstaller. The installer runs fine but the PSP won't boot up when I insert the pandora battery, just the backlight will go on. Anyone have a similar problem like this? Thanks a bunch.

That happened to me after I installed CFW 4.01 M33-2. The PSOne games I purchased no longer worked - but it is easily fixed.

All you have to do is redownload them from the PS Store and it will make them valid again. I just tried that on a whim, since I couldn't find anything on Google about people with CFW having problems with purchased PSOne games from the PS store - maybe I didn't search well enough or maybe most are using copies ripped from actual PSOne discs and don't run into that problem.

Sorry, forgot to PM you.
That guide won't display anything on Slim PSP. Either press the buttons as mentioned in the guide and let is flash your PSP blindly
OR
Use this other newer guide here which has Slim PSP display support

i noticed someone mentioned messing around with popsloader to get DWVII to run, but i've been running it fine without any secondary programs. is it only an issue when you have to change discs?

Tried to create a Pandora setup, and... I've failed.

Launch PSP, was on the latest (as of tonight) M33 firmware.

Tried running UPMS4...
At the step where I have to hit square to install fatms371.prx, I do so. It seems to go alright. Then (iirc), it say I need to reboot into the XMB, and start over. Okay, sounds great.

Except... the poor thing won't boot into XMB anymore. Or, afaik, anything. But I CAN get to the M33 Recovery Menu. But that's it. If I don't boot into recovery, I just boot to a black screen, the green light stays on for ~10 seconds, and then the PSP shuts down. =\

I've tried the option to "format flash1 and reset settings". No change. I also downloaded a 352 m33 recovery eboot, but I get the same "black screen and a green light" symptoms when I try and run that.
So this same exact thing just happened to me, except I have a slim. I do not have a Pandora battery. Is there any way to fix this without one?

I used to be very up to date in the PSP homebrew/hacking scene, but I have slacked off in the past year.

Is there a working plugin for custom soundtracks on 4.01 M33?

Neither of the more up to date ones (one for 3.71 and one for 3.90) work.

Sorry to ask this here but forum searching didn't give anything. What's the state on PS3 homebrews? Any finalburn/mame/snes9x and co builds available? I understand that they must be linux builds but beyond that?

Alright - my buddy gave me his brand new PSP Slim (PSP-2001, no game included, 3.95 firmware):

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UA0LXQ/?tag=neogaf0e-20

My PSP is a Fat with 3.71 CFW so I can run the tools to build the Pandora battery. I was aboot to follow the navanman guide in the OP (How to downgrade, install CFW on ANY PSP using Universal Pandora Memory Stick (UPMS)) and went to the Dark Alex site to download files and saw different versions of software than what was listed in the guide, and a warning aboot certain PSP motherboards:

http://pspupdates.qj.net/Dark-AleX-...ndorizable-PSP-TA-088-models/pg/49/aid/122542

Since it is in my best interest not to break this thing, I just want to confirm the above guide is what I should be following. Also, should I be using the specific versions of software listed or the newest versions? Or is this guy out of luck since he has a newer PSP? Thanks for any info!

Im going to cover myself after asking this but please answer me..

I have a new PSP slim latest firmware installed. I do not own a Pandora battery or have anyone I know that have a modded PSP. How the hell would I go about modding this new slim? If its even possible?

I have a SLEW of PS1 Games I would like to play portable but Sony is treating the US market like a cheap crack whore with releases anyone gives a damn about. I mean going on 1 1/2 years and we have less than 5 worthy PS1 games on the site!

Can someone private message me with a link or post it here for others that might be in the same boat as me?

Okay I have a problem.

My music files on the psp is over 999, and since the psp can only display up to 999 files per folder I have to create folders within the music directory. The only problem with this approach is that the psp can't shuffle through folders and goes through all the files within a folder before going to another folder and shuffling through another set of files. Is there some sort of homebrew app that helps to rectify this issue?

Does 4.01 M33-2 work with Remote Play? I've just started taking an interest in Remote Play.

*Seems like it does. I've got the updater right now, wow @ downloading the Eboot Online via the Updater. Dark Alex has an axe to grind :lol

I just downloaded a movie and it won't let me tranfer it over because I have 3.90 M33. Theres no way to get a custom version on 4.05? There no way I can tranfer this over?

Did you try using the USB Firmware Faker PRX that Dark_Alex made?

Running off of Custom Firmware
Alright. I've had a pretty momentous evening tonight, and as such thought I'd post an update. While posting the update, I figured I'd also similarly update the OP and my PSOne -> PSP Conversion Tutorial with the long-promised changes. Definitely more complete now!

I started the evening by taking my PSP Phat (now my UMPS Pandora machine, basically) and updated it to what my Slim was sporting. 3.90 M33-3. It's a good, reliable, safe CFW. Then, I wiped out my old Pandora and recreated it using the same battery, but a now spare 4GB mem stick that I'm not otherwise using. I downloaded the newest UPMS Installer (4.3, which added support for 4.01 M33, amongst many other awesome improvements) and within a few minutes, had a brand new Pandora battery that even seemed to work properly.

Equipped with an updated and more compatible Pandora, I finally took a deep breath and plunged into the deep end. I updated my Slim (my primary, every day PSP) to 4.01 M33-2. Even braver, I dumped the 3.71 firmware and used the fruits of that labor to apply a DECRYPTED (this is key) 3.71 fatmsmod patch to 4.01 M33. This was risky because this patch was created for 3.80 M33 and 3.90 M33, and has NOT been updated by DAX to support 4.01 M33. Using the smaller encrypted 3.71 file will brick your PSP. But, I'm happy to report that I had no issues installing the patch.

Now, back when I first started using 3.90 M33 I fell in love with another Red Squirrel customization. The Alternate VSH Menu (v4.2). It basically replaces the regular VSH Menu added to the M33 CFWs some versions ago with a new, expanded one that includes all of the regular VSH Menu features, plus a whole bunch more. Very convenient. The problem is, the Alternate VSH Menu hasn't been updated in forever.

Flashing it is a lot more convenient (for me) than using it as a plugin, but as it turns out, the PRX files that flashing entails have been renamed from what they used to be called in 3.90. Red Squirrel's patcher can't handle the new file names. In fact, it was very risky to even ATTEMPT to patch these files, since it was more likely that I'd break something in the process. I'm happy to report that if you rename the PRX files to what they USED to be called in 3.90, patch them using the v4.2 patcher, rename the patched PRX files to what they're called now, and overwrite the ones in your flash0 with them, the Alternate VSH Menu starts working just fine on 4.01 M33-2, upon next reboot of course.

I'm thrilled to report that 4.01 M33-2 is working a treat, that the old fatmsmod patch works perfectly as well when properly flashed, and the old POPSLoader plugin works perfectly too. I've tested a bunch of PSP ISOs, PSOne EBOOTs, the SNES emulator, the CWCheat plugin, and various homebrew apps and games, and so far so awesome. It's been a good night, so far. Now for some Soul Calibur IV. Cheers!

Please feel free to check out the updated OP and a PSOne -> PSP Conversion Tutorial!

It's been updated to v5.0 for a while now: http://redsquirrel.pspgen.com/

That's also where RSPsarDumper v3.5 is for those folks who want that.

My brother is having some problems. I got custom firmware on his psp and it freezes when selecting the popsloader version. I've tried with his memory stick and I gave him the files and it just freezes and I tried it with my memory stick that works on my other two psps and it works fine for me but still freezes for him. He had 3.90 and we just now upgraded to 4.01 thinking that might be it and it still freezes. Is his psp broken or what could be causing it to freeze?

This was the post I've been looking for - I've been chickenly sticking with CFW 3.71 and I have 2 buddies PSPs (a fat @ 3.73 & a slim @ 3.95) that I need to hack as well.

Thanks Meijlan, an updating I will go!

Exporting and Converting a .PSV file from the PS3 to a readable Save File for the PSP is freaking easy.

I just exported over the save file via my PSPs MSPro Duo and use a program called PSVExporter to extract the save file :D.

Love how the PS3 is open like this!

Great success! I upgraded THREE PSPs to CFW 4.01 M33-2 w/fatmod patch v2 and popsloader 3.80 v2 (my CFW 3.71, fat 3.73. slim 3.95) and everything seems to be peachy!

Of note - my pops compatibility observations. DW(Q)7 worked fine with pops 3.72 (as expected) and surprisingly 4.01. MGS1 FAILED (did not load) with 4.01, skipped with 3.72 and worked great with 3.71. FF7 also seemed to work fine with 4.01. I like how the newst pops gives you a memory card manager - sweet.

Thanks for the updates - now I can return these farkin' PSPs, heh.

I got the TOOL battery and I will be going custom firmware for the PSP.

I just got sick of loading times when playing the PSP.

Congrats Rob. I'm rather surprised that DQVII worked out with 4.01. That game's VERY touchy. Hell, even the retail disc is. It stutters and fails over minor scratches that other games can shrug off without a hitch.
