PSP Remaster Series Announced for PlayStation 3

This would've been perfect if a PS3 remaster could be played on NGP. But in this way it is worthless for me. But it seems to be good for people who can't stand playing games on handhelds.

I think at this point there is starting to be a lot of fragmentation in the PS brand. We have:

NGP games
PS3 games
PS3->NGP ports
PSP games, playable on NGP
PSP remasters, not playable on NGP
PS2 remasters on PS3, questionable whether playable on NGP
PlayStation Suite, which features some games playable on NGP and Android but not on PS3

I wouldn't be surprised if PlayStation games just become like PC games, with different presets for each piece of hardware.

I bet they'll be playable on NGP. Wait for E3.

As a note the press release says blockbuster games, so the Valk titles would have to be an exception.

I don't think much of the PSP titles as of late (besides MH) have been blockbusters.

So it's most likely:

Dissidia
Crisis Core
Birth by Sleep
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walkers

Well, I assume they mean relative to the Japanese market.

Here are the top selling PSP games in Japan:

Between this and PS2 collections/HD trilogy, Sony sure loves recycling old shit :/

Though I can't blame them a bit if people are actually buying it.

Glad to see the need to hype up any game with a sliver of potential into Game of the Forever stratospheres is still alive and well (see: Type-0)

Finally, the MGS: Peace Walker series is announced for Playstation 3. Sony needs to make like Steam Play and offer the remastered titles for free if you own the digital PSP version.

edit: Will it be retail only?

"Blockbuster games"? Ah man, my dream of a HD Beyblade game has been trashed. :(

The Last Ranker! NOOOO!!!!

Easy money for all parties.

Things I want:

Updated controls (like usage of the RIGHT stick. They should also use the extra two shoulder buttons and L3/R3 if it eliminates the clumsiness of some PSP control schemes).

Updated graphics and GUI. I'm not so sure how feasible updating sprites is though (for example in a game like Tactics Ogre). I can see how something like God of War PSP can be uprezzed and upscaled with better textures and antialiasing though. GUIs should be changed as well to account for the extra space and resolution.

Trophies. I'm not too optimistic on this.

And of course ports of games I like, many have already listed them.

So only 4 PSP titles (in Japan) have sold over a million? I just find that very sad.

Yeah, that makes sense.
After seeing 3DS's BC mode, I'm a little worried about how something like Tactics Ogre is going to look on the NGP's 960x544 screen.

You flunked math, didn't you?

960x544 is exactly 4 times 480x272 which means you get perfect scaling. (1 pixel = 4 pixels) It's also almost exactly 1/4th of 1080p (except for those extra couple pixels, for some reason). That's presumably why those chose that resolution.

3DS has only slightly higher resolution, which creates scaling problems.

First they port PS1 games to PSP
Then they port PSP games to PS2
Then they port PS2 games to PS3
Now they port PSP games to PS3!

@_@

What I wouldn't give to play PS:P2 and other PSP games I already own on my PS3. Keyword: already own. Wasn't this the same situation PSP No buyers were in? Rebuy your games or die? Oh the sad sad irony >_<;

Good point. I can breathe easier now.

Sanctioned port begging topic. Love it.

You should see the 360's though. Not even one has reached a quarter to a million (250k).

You should be happy, as it's probably the only chance .hack//LINK has for a domestic release (though it's not a blockbuster either).

It's kind of funny. Many say PSP was born on ports, and yet PS3 will die on ports.

I wouldn't complain about that (as long as it got a disc release) since I dun own it. The thought of rebuying my 8 other PSP games on the other hand = -_-; I think I'll not be buying any new PSP games in the immediate future!

I know this guy who hasn't been able to play Peace Walker on his PSP because his system got damaged to the point of failure.

This is quite the awesome shining beacon of hope for that guy. Last time I played the demo, I realized the game is just begging to be in the ps3 if only for the benefit of dual analog controls.

They can port whatever they want. It's no skin off anyone's ass but theirs. Nothing wrong with more people getting to play games in hd. Not everyone is a neckbeard that groans because they bought the same game years ago.

Great initiative! I can't believe Sony finally decided to do it.

I really wonder what they will port though. I don't think Sony will allow direct porting of games so they will probably need to be upgraded visually (like the MHF3 shot). MGS Peace Walker, Birth by Sleep, Dissidia and Crisis Core are a given. Games with sprites and from small publishers not so much. Pretty sure there will be some kind of limitation from Sony or soon the whole PSP library will be on PS3.

Peace Walker has been hinted for a while now. I think it will really help the game to have a twin stick control scheme. I had to play "Claw" style and my hand really started to hurt after playing the game for 60 hours.

I also wonder if the digital version of these could be compatible with the NGP...

Remaster is such a classy way of saying recompile.
Recompile implies they aren't updating anything. If they do the GoW games (and they will) I'm expecting quality the same as the current HD collection, and I'll take that.

Gradius Collection and Power Stone Collection or GTFO!

Oh, and Valkyria games, kthxbai.

Make this shit 4-players = heaven man. Heaven.

Really smart move by Sony though, especially for the western markets where the PSP never took off as much as much. I'd definitely try out a PS3 Monster Hunter with ad hoc party.

I'm confused about what this is. Is this some sort of emulation ala PS1 titles?

Or is it just Sony saying "hey guys lets port all our PSP stuff to PS3!"

I'm hoping it's the former, and that it's cross-compatible with NGP and available through PSN

If Sega refuses to release Valkyria Chronicles 3 on the PSP, I certainly hope that this is a viable alternate avenue. They really have no excuses now.

If there is no PSP, I expect it to be on either the PS3 or the NGP, there is no excuses.

The God of War games, MGS: PW & Valkyria Chronicles I & II, please.

Pretty much this list. Although I think I would add Kingdom Heart: BBS. Would be awesome to play these on PS3.

Holy shit, Awesome fucking news!!

Sign me up for Peace Walker, Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Type-0, Tactics.

I wonder if Sony plans to make Universal Games that are both playable on PS3 and NGP, like some games and apps are on the iPad and IPhones.

This is great news. The PSP really excels for certain games, but for others (like Peace Walker) I really like the idea of playing it on a TV with a controller a whole lot better. Awesome move.

This is all but guaranteed to come to North America, as it is a fairly obvious attempt at an end-run around the corpse-like PSP market outside of Japan. If gamers won't buy it for the handheld system, make the games available for play on the system they do own and buy. (And it's a good way to expand the library of the console, spurring more people to buy it in the face of the PSN fiasco.)

Myself, I am nakedly hoping for a lot of Falcom ports (using, at a minimum, the PC version graphics). It would help those games in terms of exposure tremendously. Also Valkyria, natch.

As much as I would like to see Tactics Ogre, I doubt we will see any 2D games. If they just upscale those they would look like garbage.

If these remasterd games end up on the PS Store I think there's a big chance that they will work on the NGP as well. I would love if that happened.

Well, looks like I won't be buying Peace Walker for PSP now.

Kinda curious about Monster Hunter 3 as well, hope this hits NA.

Ultimately it's a reason to add more software to the library, specifically aimed at those who snort their noses at the thought of having to play a game on a handheld.

What I am interested in though is whether the ability to buy these Remasters will give you the added function to grab the PSP data at the same time - something similar to what the film production companies do when they pump out a Bluray by throwing in a free DVD of the same movie. It seems ludicrous, almost to the point of obscene Nintendo Gameboy-Pokemon/Oracles level, to force consumers to double-dip just to play on the go especially at the price tag of games on the console marketplace. You're better off buying the PSP game and do PSP Remote if you feel compelled to sit on the couch.

If they go the aforementioned route it might perk up PSP sales a bit more, especially for something like Monster Hunter where putting in 30mins of your commute to study/work is a worthwhile boon.
